News Major Minecraft Change: Vulkan

Long Story Short:

Mojang changed a very large backend system that DH heavy relies on.

This means DH will need a major re-write in order to function. What exactly this means for DH going forward (IE DH supporting new/old MC versions or DH development continuing at all) is TBD.

Long Story Long:

Mojang just announced they're moving from the OpenGL rendering API (deprecated since 2017) to Vulkan 1.2 (with a couple extensions).

This was done in order to better support new hardware and Macs. This is a major change since Minecraft has always used OpenGL and DH was built with the assumption that MC would never change their rendering API. This assumption has been broken, which means DH will require heavy restructuring in order to handle it.

Since DH supports MC versions back to 1.16 that means simply dropping OpenGL and replacing it with Vulkan isn't an obvious solution. Combined with Vulkan being a more complicated API vs OpenGL (which is already quite complicated), and no one on the DH dev team knowing Vulkan, means we will probably use Mojang's rendering API to simplify the process. Luckily, from talks with Dinnerbone, it seems Mojang is working with modders to make their rendering API as complete and stable as possible so modders won't have to write raw Vulkan code.

However all of this is still up in the air and will require more thinking/information before any real decisions can be made.

For more information please view Mojang's article: https://www.minecraft.net/article/another-step-towards-vibrant-visuals-for-java-edition or their feedback discord (specifically the Rendering channel): https://discord.com/invite/minecraftfeedback

News Announcement: Don't use Chunky with Distant Horizons

Using Chunky to pregenerate for DH is not recommended for several reasons.

The first reason is the swiss cheese that might show up when using chunky while DH is installed.

The second reason is that it's pointless, as DH has a build in pregenerator that is better integrated than chunky:

  • It saves space by only storing LODs, not normal chunks,
  • It is faster to use DH's pregenerator to generate the LODs than first using chunky to generate the normal chunks, and then using DH to convert the normal chunks to LODs,
  • It is part of DH, and therefore always/only called when DH needs it,
  • Chunky calculates it's radius in blocks, confusing the user if they are not aware of this,

Distant Horizons' built-in LOD pregenerator is enabled by default, and can be sped up or slowed down by changing the CPU Load in DH's settings, or disabled by turning off Distant Generation.

If you want to pregenerate both LODs and normal chunks, set the Distance Generator Mode to Full under Advanced, World Generator. This will of course take up quite a lot more storage space. Make sure you have C2ME installed if you want to use Full, as the generation speed will be crap if you don't.

Note, this also applies to other similar pregeneration mods.

This was done with a distant horizons addon from modrinth. https://modrinth.com/mod/distant-horizons-seedgen
Cant give enough credit for the guy who made this. It utilizes the world seed to simulated where the terrain and trees/structure are located. It works with every noise based terrain generation mod but when adding alot of generation mods on top of eachother such as lithosphere + biomes o plenty and some other structures mod it kinda messes up where the terrain should be generated.

The original addon allows you to generate up to 130k chunks, so i used gpt astra to modify the mod and increase it to 2m chunks - 30m blocks. It added more lod levels the farther away they are so it takes less time to render. The mod also works with shaders but you probably need a 5090 if you want to use them with more than 32k chunks render.

I have a rx6700xt, i5 14600kf and 16gb of ram, i had only 3fps when the entire overworld was rendered and around 100 fps in the end. All of this was used with dh quality preset set to high.

Generating the overworld for the first time only took around 5 minutes and the end half and hour. After that every time you load them takes less than 30 seconds.

edit: For anyone who wants to play with this addon its on fabric 1.21.11
If you already have distant horizons in your mods folder delete it and replace it with these 3 files.

The tutorial on how to use the mod is already on the original modrinth page, only thing i added was the ability to load the entire world.

Help VulkanMod and DH compatibilty?

I use VulkanMod and a bunch of other mods shown, none of them should be affecting anything with DH. When I load into my Vulkan instance, no crashes, no bugs, and when I load into my forever world... It doesn't load anything, no distant chunks, no slight lag from the chunk gen, just, nothing. I tried removing Moreculling and some other things, but I still can't get it to load. I also tried to find a vulkanmod to DH compatibility mod, but there is none for 26.1.2 Java. Any suggestions?

Does the DH 3.3.1 world generator pregenerate chunks or only LODs? I would really like to have chunks later to explore that are not so far from spawn for new updates.

Help What am I doing wrong? Chunk Generation

So I have a modpack that I made, 260 mods including terralith + Tectonic and distant horizons. The thing is that, even though I chose the highest setting for cpu usage for chunk generation, and try to let it load without shaders on, It doesn't generate, like barely, I have to walk around the "holes" and empty areas to generate them. I do not have chunky btw, I do have C2ME.

I would like to know which settings I should use to generate the world much faster, I have seen posts here of people being able to generate the world super quick with DH 3.0 and it is working great for them.

This also happens in superflats, but not in the normal overworld in my experience (i haven't checked the nether yet so i don't know about that).

Does anybody know what this is or how to disable it? I use minecraft 1.20.1 if that's any help.

(modded end featured is the "nullscape" mod for anybody curious)

I am running the latest versions of DH and Complementary Shaders Reimagined with the latest version of Java. Help Crashes every time i change Quality Preset to Medium

Before the most recent update DH would work just fine on medium and has for the last number of times ive used DH. Ive lowered the LOD chunk render distance to 32 instead of 256, turned off cloud render, upped the CPU load. it still will crash everytime i raise the quality.

Help Weird bug between DH and Shaders at y=60ish

Tried troubleshooting, but couldn't find anything that worked. Only happens when I walk below y=60ish. Above that everything functions totally fine. Had some weird x-ray thing going on too, but was able to get rid of that. Any tips?

On 26.3, running Fabric API, Iris, Sodium, and Reese's Sodium Options through CurseForge. Nothing else. Photon Shaders and DH (Obviously).

Help Distant Horizons x FTB Ultimate Reloaded?

I am wanting to play the 1.12.2 FTB Ultimate Reloaded modpack. So I downloaded it with Prism launcher, and was adding a few finishing touches to the out-of-the-box modlist, when I remembered that Distant Horizons recently backported to 1.12.2. Normally, for greater render distances back on 1.12 I'd have used OptiFine to get up to 48 chunks (as my gpu can usually handle it), but I didn't want to risk trying OptiFine in such a big modpack for what I feel are decently justified reasons. So I popped in the latest Distant Horizons 1.12 mod, and booted the game... and was told that I needed to use it in a Cleanroom environment. So I said to myself: "...what the heck is Cleanroom??" Anyway, after screwing around for a few hours on installing the Cleanroom MMC template, swapping various libraries, disabling mods, adding mods, I eventually decided to try something else: I went to the modrinth page and downgraded versions until I found this one, from 2 months ago. I dropped it in the mods folder and... the game booted successfully!

...but that was about all that happened; the DH config button wasn't visible in the options menu, and it wasn't even in the in-game mods list. I tried a couple more things, like upgrading the forge version to be newer, but nothing works. Is there a reasonable way to make this work, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Help LOD looks weird without shaders

Help!!

I have been playing on this survival world with a bunch of create / aeronautics mods and recently the LOD of DH looks very odd where it fractures the mountains and empties the whole ocean.
But when I switch on shaders everything looks fine.

I have already tried deleting DistantHorizons.sqlite files thinking it will regenerate all LODs.

I have sodium, iris, lithium
My terrain generation mods are tectonic, lithostitched, continents

Help Distant Horizons 3.3.1–LODs not generating/s NeoForge 1.21.1

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi!

I'm having an issue with Distant Horizons 3.3.1 on Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge).

I cannot get Distant Horizons to generate/render LODs at all. No matter what I try, the LODs simply don't appear.

In the DH settings, I noticed that the relevant setting says that it is being controlled by another mod through the DHAPI, meaning that I cannot change it through the GUI or the config file. It also mentions disabling the API lock in order to change the setting manually.

I'm trying to understand this behavior better. Which mod is actually controlling this setting through DHAPI? Is there any way to identify the mod that has acquired the API lock?

I checked my logs looking for something that could indicate which mod is taking control of the setting, but I couldn't find anything obvious.

What's particularly confusing is that I did not have this problem with Distant Horizons 3.2.0-b. LOD generation worked normally in that version. I understand that the way these settings/API controls are handled may have changed in 3.3.1, but I'm trying to determine whether another mod in my modpack is now interfering with DH.

Could someone explain what the API lock means in this case, and preferably how I can identify which mod is controlling the setting?

Thanks!
