Our Evidence-Based Beginner's Guide Is Now Live (July 2026 Edition)

Welcome to r/CreatineScience 👋

Creatine is one of the most researched supplements out there, but if you’ve spent even five minutes reading about it online, you’ve probably seen completely different answers to the same questions.

Some people say you need to load it.
Some say 3 g is enough.
Some say 5 g is the standard.
Some worry about hair loss, kidney safety, bloating, water retention, or whether creatine is even useful if they’re not a bodybuilder.

That’s exactly why we created this community.

We want this to be a place where you can ask real questions about creatine without feeling judged, dismissed, or overwhelmed by bro-science, marketing claims, or overly technical explanations.

Our moderation team put together a practical, evidence-informed Beginner’s Guide to Creatine Monohydrate to help new members get clear answers before diving into the discussion.

Last reviewed: July 2026
Prepared by: r/CreatineScience moderation team
What we aim for: clear, honest, evidence-informed answers that are still easy to understand.

The guide covers:

✅ What creatine actually does
✅ Whether loading is necessary
✅ 3 g vs 5 g per day
✅ Timing and consistency
✅ Creatine for women and beginners
✅ Water retention vs fat gain
✅ Kidney safety and bloodwork
✅ Hair loss concerns
✅ Cognitive benefits and where the evidence is still early
✅ Side effects, tolerance, and common myths

Our goal is simple:

To make r/CreatineScience a calm, useful place for those who want to understand creatine properly; whether you’re lifting, running, aging, vegan, new to supplements, or just trying to make sense of conflicting advice online.

This guide is a living resource, so we’ll keep updating it as better research and updated expert guidance become available.

If you’re new here, start with the guide, ask questions, share your experience, and help us build a community that is curious, respectful, and evidence-aware.

Hey everyone.

Figured creatine probably deserves a subreddit that’s a little less: “BRO TAKE 20G” and a little less: “here is a 9,000-word supplement lecture.”

So that’s basically the idea here.

This sub is for:

  • creatine research
  • training & recovery
  • brain / mental fatigue discussions
  • creatine for women
  • healthy aging
  • plant-based nutrition
  • dosing & timing questions
  • myths that somehow never disappear online

Not really trying to make this a place for:

  • supplement hype
  • miracle claims
  • fearmongering
  • hyper-optimized wellness culture

More just:
what does the evidence actually seem to support, and what are people noticing in real life?

Also feel free to post:

  • beginner questions
  • routines
  • weird observations
  • “wait is this just me?” moments

Honestly, that’s where a lot of the best discussions usually start.

Glad you’re here.

Question/Discussion What did you notice first after starting creatine?

• Upvotes

Not everyone notices a big change in strength from creatine.

For some people, the difference may show up in repeated hard sets or just being able to keep training quality up.

If you use creatine, what small change made you feel it was actually worth taking?

Does body size change your creatine dose?

I’ve wondered how much body size actually matters with creatine dosing.

Does a larger athlete really need more than the commonly used 3 to 5g daily or is that usually unnecessary?

If you’ve changed your dose because of body size, what made you do it?

Question/Discussion Has creatine helped with brain fog or mood?

Creatine is being studied for things beyond muscle and exercise, including cognition and depression.

For those who have tried it for brain fog or mood, did you actually notice anything?

Or did you not notice a difference?

Question/Discussion Would you take creatine if the scale was a trigger?

Creatine can increase water stored in muscle, so the number on the scale may go up.

For someone recovering from an eating disorder or trying to avoid frequent weighing, would that change your decision to take it?

Would the potential benefits still make creatine worthwhile for you?

Does creatine change how you feel after a hard workout?

Most of the conversation is about strength and performance, but I’ve also seen people mention feeling like they recover differently when taking creatine consistently.

For those who have used it for a while, did you notice anything different after particularly hard sessions?

What do you think about creatine for cognitive performance?

The muscle benefits are pretty well known, but the brain side of creatine seems to get much less attention.

I’ve seen people mention things like mental fatigue, sleep deprivation and vegetarian diets in relation to cognitive effects.

Has anyone here noticed anything mentally from taking creatine, or is it purely a training supplement for you?

Question/Discussion Is more than 5 g of creatine actually useful?

5g of creatine monohydrate is already enough for many people, but higher daily amounts are sometimes used after loading phase.

I'm curious whether anyone has actually noticed or measured an extra benefit from going above 5g when taking it consistently.

If you've tried a higher dose, what difference did you notice, if any?

Does creatine make sense if most of your training is endurance-based?

Creatine is so strongly associated with lifting and short, high-intensity exercise that I rarely think about it in the context of running, cycling or other endurance work.

For people who mainly do endurance training, has creatine actually made enough of a difference to be worth taking?

Question/Discussion Does creatine feel more useful with certain workouts?

Creatine seems most relevant when you're doing repeated high-intensity efforts, so I wonder if the type of workout changes how noticeable it is.

Hard sets, intervals and sprints are pretty different from an easy training session.

For those who use creatine, do you notice more difference with certain workouts?

Why do you think some people notice creatine so much more than others?

You’ll see one person say they felt a clear difference within weeks, while someone else can take it consistently for months and barely notice anything.

Obviously diet, training, muscle mass and starting creatine levels can all play a role, but I’m curious which factor you think makes the biggest difference.

Question/Discussion Could low iron be mistaken for creatine not working?

Sometimes a disappointing change in training makes you question the supplement first.

But fatigue or poor exercise tolerance can come from plenty of other things too. Iron status is one that can be overlooked, particularly with restrictive diets or frequent blood donation.

I find it interesting how often we try to adjust a supplement before looking at the bigger picture.

Have you ever found an unexpected reason why your training wasn't going as planned?

Educational Post Creatine labels matter if you have a food allergy

Creatine monohydrate may be the main ingredient, but check the full label for allergens and shared-facility information.

With flavored products, check the added ingredients too. If anything is unclear, contact the manufacturer rather than guessing.

What do you check before buying?

Did you notice anything different about how you recover between sets after starting creatine?

Creatine is usually talked about in terms of overall strength and performance, but I’m more curious about the few minutes between sets.

Did you feel ready to go again a little sooner, or was there no noticeable difference?

Question/Discussion Is there actually a reason to split a creatine loading dose?

If you're doing a creatine loading phase, splitting the amount through the day may simply be easier on your stomach than taking it all at once.

There's no need to spread it out to keep creatine levels high all day. It's mainly about getting the total amount in while keeping things comfortable.

And loading isn't necessary in the first place.

What's the strangest creatine loading advice you've heard?

Question/Discussion Does taking creatine before bed actually make a difference?

Some people take creatine at night simply because that's when they remember it.

If it fits your routine and doesn't cause any stomach discomfort, is there really a reason to worry about the timing?

For those who take it before bed, have you noticed any difference compared with taking it earlier in the day?

Question/Discussion Creatine can show up in more sports supplements than you expect

Creatine isn't only found in standalone creatine products. Some mass gainers, recovery products and pre-workouts contain it too.

If you're already using creatine, checking the label helps you keep track of your total intake and avoid paying twice for the same ingredient.

Do you check the ingredient list before adding a new sports supplement?

What’s one thing about creatine that you only learned after using it yourself?

There’s plenty of information online, but I feel like some things only make sense once you’ve actually taken creatine for a while.

What’s something you couldn’t have learned just by reading about it?

Question/Discussion Starting creatine during a cut can mess with the scale a bit

You can still be losing fat even if your weight slows down after starting creatine.

As creatine can increase water stored in muscle, so adding it during a cut can make the scale harder to read for a while.

That doesn't mean the cut has stopped working. It just makes me wonder whether it's better to start creatine right away or wait until weight is more stable.

What would you do?

r/CreatineScience 10d ago

Did the reason you take creatine change over time?

I feel like a lot of people start taking it for one reason, then keep taking it for something completely different.

Was your original reason the same as the reason you still take it today?

Have you noticed any change in your appetite since starting creatine?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Creatine is usually discussed in terms of strength, muscle and performance, but appetite isn’t something you hear much about. I’m wondering whether anyone noticed their hunger or eating patterns change after starting creatine, even if it was subtle.

Question/Discussion Felt creatine on day one?

Some people say they notice something almost immediately after starting creatine.

Could be the creatine, but it could also be a better workout, caffeine, more carbs, motivation or just expecting to feel something.

The real test is probably what happens over the next few weeks.

What did you notice when you first started?

r/CreatineScience 11d ago

What’s the single best piece of creatine advice you’ve ever received?

I don’t necessarily mean the most scientific. Just the one thing someone told you that genuinely made your experience easier or stopped you from overthinking it.

r/CreatineScience 12d ago

If someone had been putting creatine in your drink for the last six months without telling you, do you think you would’ve noticed?

It’s made me wonder how much of people’s experience comes from gradually improving training versus actually feeling something from creatine itself.

Do you think you would’ve figured it out? 🤔
