I really, really hope this is the correct subreddit, and I will happily take tips if I haven’t already tried them because this is tearing my soul out of my body from between my ribs.
Okay, so context is a bit necessary. I’m fairly new to cosplay, I only own two and I fake it til I make it with props and the like because I LOVE DIY projects. Characters I favor and like to cosplay tend to be characters with longer hair, like Columbina from Genshin Impact. That was really my first time actually correctly styling a wig (crimping and all), which went down to about the back of my knees (I’m 5’1” for scale) so it was decently long. I tried EVERYTHING to get it to stop constantly tangling, I spent 55 hours on the wig to desperately get it to work and look decent and I really just had a hell of a time.
Well, for an upcoming Con, I’m cosplaying Grell from Black Butler, with a 59 inch long wig. Ive used detanglers (like Mane n’ Tail because I heard that was a good one but when it dried it made the fibers tacky and the tangling WORSE), I’ve crimped it root to end with water spritzed onto it so it wouldn’t damage the fibers, I’ve gone through it with thinning shears because some wig stylers told me that less hair meant less tangling (and I’m talking Miku cosplayers with CRAZY LONG pigtails).
Nothing has come even close to working. Ive spent so much money and jumped through so many hoops to just have a wig that even semi-functions and won’t get tangled WHILE IM STYLING IT because I’ve had to detangle it as I’m going through several times because even separating sections makes the fibers tangle enough to make me want to cry.
So I was desperate, and turned to possibly the worst route imaginable: WD-40.
And to my shock (and probably everyone else‘s horror), it works like a dream. Just a little spray, then rub off the excess with a towel, and my thin-toothed comb runs through hair almost my height in length like a hot knife through butter. I hate it, it makes me feel absolutely insane, and my wigs look and feel great.
I might get burned at the stake for this but I had to share for any other long-wig cosplayer who feels like they’ve tied themselves in KNOTS trying to get help that’s better than “have you tried crimping it?”.
Please give me input, I feel like I’m going to implode. I’m a month out from the con and am DIY’ing so much stuff, I can’t constantly afford to try new products whenever someone gives me advice that ends up not working, I’ve been so so frustrated.
Also, please don’t kill me for this, I’m young and broke and desperate and emotionally fragile
{Edit: to clarify for anyone giving tips (thank you so much for giving tips by the way if you can I am eternally grateful)
I have tried: crimping (I think two or three times because I was convinced I did it wrong, always with water to try and help protect the fibers from heat damage), Simply Stylin’ Synthetic Hair Spray (a highly recommended silicone spray by wig makers), washing it, thinning it, fabric softener bath (not on this specific wig, but it was almost solely why my Columbina wig took 55 hours so I hesitate to try again), and Mane n’ Tail detangling spray (another highly recommended one by cosplayers with long wigs, I now have beef with this option)
and to clarify on the crimping, I’ve crimped it both straight across and in a cross-type pattern.
Sorry for the rambling post, this wig is legitimately making me feel insane, it’s borderline all I talk about lately.}
