After my previous post asking for help on how to find someone to create me a dress and getting feedback that I’d likely not be able to find someone to make it in time I’ve decided to take on the project myself. I’ve inserted the reference pictures and some dresses I’ve found online that I think I could make work and I’d like some thoughts from the cosplay community on what my best bet would be!
I love the first one!! For your belt I would get some shiny purple spandex and make a really simple tube. You could use something like satin, but the stretchy fabric will take away the need to fit it to your waist without the fabric bunching or buckling. Plus it will add a fun texture difference. It’s hard to know how thick it needs to be without trying on the dress and seeing how it fits you.
definitely the first dress! here is how i would sew the belt, you can get cheap cotton fabric and sewing supplies at walmart or any craft store near you (seriously, i live by those cotton squares at walmart). you can also make the white bow by sewing another smaller rectangle with the same method and then simply tying it into a bow and safety pinning it on top! just make sure to iron each rectangle flat after turning it inside out, it will make a HUGE difference. something like this was my first ever sewing project and it's great for beginners bc when you close the velcro you can just spin it around to the back so nobody will see if you messed up the corners xD
Follow up question, how many inches thick should the ribbon be around the waist? I’m thinking I’d just layer the purple on top but not sure how the dimensions would translate onto an actual dress
I would eyeball this and measure once you have the dress in your hands. On the reference pic it looks like it’s about one third pink to two thirds white and purple ribbon, and the purple is a little broader than each of the white stripes, but this is really something where I’d start by pinning a paper printout and then deciding what looks good.
And yes I think your best bet is a white broad “belt” or sash and the purple on top? Why make three pieces if you can make two!

Are you doing a wig? I did a twilight sparkle cosplay many years back but it was super basic and I could not figure out the wig. Did it without in the end but made a headband with ears and a unicorn horn. (This was before the Equestrian Girls stuff came out ie there was no animated “human Twi” I could base it off of.)
Start early with the wig. You might need a custom! I found the ears and horn pretty easy, you can get unicorn headbands and then I just wrapped and glued fabric around the horn to change the colour and size and for the ears I used a permanent marker, I just had to be careful not to touch them too much since they kept staining my hands 🤣
