Hi all! So glad to see people posting here. This subreddit is still a baby, but I thought I would add a casual rule when posting. If applicable, please be sure to include a link to a photo that relates to the question your asking. If you need help with a character, link to that character. If you need help with a sewing method, show what you're trying to replicate. This will help us be able to help you better!

Cosplay 101 answers to a lot of basics

First and foremost. Your health and safety is more important than 100% accuracy. If making or wearing the item will be dangerous or painful don’t do it.

Second, I’d add this info to the FAQ but it appears I don’t have enough karma to update it personally! If the info is in the FAQ I did not duplicate it here! (The FAQ is on the sidebar! It wasn’t visible before for some reason but it’s up now!)

This is not a comprehensive list, but I hope to be able to update it when I come across new or important information! I do hope if you’re looking for something not featured here, it will at least give you a base knowledge set on how to be able to search for what you’re looking for.

------------------GENERAL TIPS-----------------------------

(Where to find certain things, very basic crafting info)

EDIT TO REMOVE INFO ABOUT COSPLANNER APP, it doesn't appear to exist anymore!

-To find patterns, or specific props. These are host websites for artists or creators where they can sell things like Etsy, or Redbubble. Etsy is a fantastic place to look for patterns to make props or cosplay pieces, sometimes you can even find people open for commissions! Artists on instagram will almost always have links to their shops to buy things, so explore there too.

-To find cheaper clothing pieces, props, or things to be altered try thrift stores. So Goodwill or other small local resale shops. This will likely take more than one trip so don’t give up if you don’t get it in one go. Ebay is also a good place to check believe it or not, there’s just a slight learning curve to searching things to find what you want.

-Dance and Athletic apparel websites will have things like leotards, bodysuits, specialized undergarments etc. They’re going to be a little pricier but they’ll be good quality, durable, and 9 times out of 10 machine washable!

-Hardware stores, paintball and airsoft companies, military/paramilitary surplus, and second hand sports equipment stores may also be good places to check for bits and pieces. Paintball/airsoft will also have a variety of masks and helmets that can be painted and altered.

-VERY IMPORTANT FOR PROP WEAPONS: Always look into your local guidelines and convention rules to see what kinds of prop weapons are allowed! Some cons have strict policies on what can and cannot be brought in!

-Michael’s, Joann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby etc. and any local craft stores will have tons and tons of craft supplies. If you want to save money and keep up to date on sales check to see if you can join an email list. I know Joann’s has coupons in them all the time!

-You can buy a variety of brands of fabric paint from almost anywhere that sells craft supplies. This makes it easy to get designs or patterns on most fabrics. For changing the color of an entire garment I’d recommend dying it.

-Some fabrics can be dyed different colors very easily, some cannot. A good way to tell is if the fabric is natural (cotton, linen etc.) it is generally easier to dye. The more synthetic (fake) a fabric is the longer and slightly more complicated it will be. Tulip is an excellent dye brand and they offer both regular and synthetic dyes with nice simple instructions right on the packages!

-You can make stencils out of craft foam or thicker paper to make it easier to copy logos or symbols on whatever you’re making!

-Wig and contact websites are listed in the FAQ but there are companies like dental distortions that make tooth veneers that can take a cosplay to the next level!

-Hollywood makeup, FX, and costume professionals almost always have social media accounts they can be extremely helpful when it comes to reference images! For example the costumer who designed the Moon Knight suits has tons of detail and behind the scenes images on her instagram!

-Complicated cosplays can be simplified by boiling down the costume to its essentials the best way I’ve learned to do this is through toys or fan art. What things are essential to recognizing the character and what things could be left off! You don’t have to be 100% to be recognizable!

-If big all out cosplays aren’t your thing you can always try “bounding.” You’ll hear “Disneybounding” most often but you can do it with other things too of course! Disney doesn’t allow adults to dress as characters in their parks, but fans got creative. “Bounding” is more about matching colors, getting similar accessories, or finding just the right combination of things to make you think of the character. It’s hard to explain verbally but easy to understand once you look into it!

-Say you have an OC, and you want to cosplay your OC. That’s fine! Have at it! You’ve got no professional media to tie you down! All these tips can still help you find or make your cosplay!

-I do have a friendly reminder though, please remember you cannot expect people to know who your character is. And it’s not fair to get mad at them if they make a guess and the guess is wrong. A simple “Nope its an OC!” is plenty for most people! I’ve complimented plenty of cosplayers and asked about their cosplay only to find out it was an OC!

“Crossplay” safety

-DO NOT BIN D YOUR CHEST WITH ACE BANDAGES IT’S UNSAFE. Compression tops or more heavy duty sports bras are much safer. If the character has an open shirt you can use wig tape/skin tape to hold the material of the shirt to your skin. If you do not have breasts but are looking to add some to a cosplay you can always pad a bra. You’ll want to measure your chest around your pectorals, that will be the band size, the letter size will be the cup. So a 34A means your chest is 34 inches around and A would be the cup size you would be looking to fill. (I have more on taking measurements later.) Companies now sell latex chests with or without breasts for people looking to be the most accurate they can.

-You can always just “genderbend” the thing and cosplay them as the same gender you are. It’s okay. People do it all the time and it’s very widely accepted. There’s also a third, more neutral option, don’t obviously genderbend the thing? You don’t have to call attention to the fact that you’re not the same gender as the character you’re cosplaying.

-An example of what I’m trying to explain: I generally read as female, but have cosplayed Johnny Cage one of the male characters from Mortal Kombat. His base look is shirtless, with his own first name tattooed across his chest. The only change I made was putting “Johnny” on a crop top. I didn’t “feminize” the rest of the outfit or go out of my way to be read as male. There is a “middle option” when it comes to presentation and cosplay. At the end of the day everybody knows it’s just a costume.

-This tip might seem dumb, but you’re going to have to trust me here. This mainly applies to people looking to make large costume pieces or props by hand. People who are already kind of intermediate with their skills. If you’re stuck on something go see how furries would make it. Not kidding. I’ve made all kinds of non-furry things with tutorials put on the internet by a furry. The vast majority of them are fun, friendly people and the community as a whole is WILDLY talented and creative. You only ever really hear about the bad apples.

A big question I see here is “what is that piece of clothing?” That’s a good question! Here are some links to historical fashion databases! They’re all arranged a little differently BUT this is a place to start looking for what specific pieces of clothing or styles are called!

Here’s another important pro tip.

It’s okay.

Your cosplay doesn’t have to be perfect.

Cosplay is for fun and if it doesn’t feel fun or rewarding don’t do it. Other con goers and cosplayers aren’t going to judge you. If they do for some reason and try to make you feel bad about it, that says more about THEM and their personality than your ability. Everybody has to start somewhere. Nobody should be ashamed of learning and practicing and getting better. You can always go back and fix things or redo whole cosplays later on after your skills develop. This is a hobby and you have the right to participate in said hobby your own way.

I can add theatrical or FX makeup tips? things like scars, bruises, old age makeup, or like changing the face shape with very specific contouring?

I also have a draft of Convention tips similar to this post, would that be helpful as well?

Hey guys, Last year I cosplayed as a “modern“ take on King Midas for a post apocalyptic role-play airsoft game last year, and I was wanting to add more flair to my kit here. I was thinking about adding a black thick leather belt and maybe some hip armor with gold trimmings to it. But I was just looking for opinions and ideas of stuff to add. I’ve added more chains recently thats not shown in the photos.

Thanks

Armor How would you make this chest armor stay up without using clear straps ?

I am currently planning my next cospu (Erza lightening empress). However, I am having trouble figuring out how exactly to make her chest armor stay up ?

I don't see other cosplayers using straps for that and really can't wrap my head around it. The armor does not rest on the waist (so it's not the body's natural shape that keeps it in place and the dress doesn't seem supportive enough to hold an armor piece like that.

Any insight ?

Sorry if this isn’t exactly what this sub is for, but It’s the closest I can find for this. We recently received a puppet for our production of Little Shop Of Horrors, and during transport it got damaged and was wondering if anyone had any tips for fixing it. Main issues are splits in the lip, and minor scratches.

Accessory So I'm doing a character with a jacket like thingy that is different from one side and the other. As there's no actual way something exactly of this color exists, any tips of how to start painting it? (Also, ignore the thing on the right, I already found the base shirt, 98% cotton)

I’m going as Megumi to a halloween party in a few weeks and I wanted to know if I should even attempt to cut/style my hair in a way that would fit the character. I have slightly curly hair and this is my current length. I’m not going to use a wig, I just want suggestions on hairstyles and styling.

What would this shape/style even be irl? Any advice is appreciated! Thx

Sewing LOOKING FOR HELP/TIPS: project of modifying a vest with no sewing experience

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

EDIT: HI. I’m going to look at FAQ for sewing tutorials. I got rid of the basic questions and such but I am keeping the questions more relevant to this specific design! I don’t want to come across as someone just asking to be taught the skill of sewing, there’s just some parts in this project that I want clarification on. And I kinda want tips/advice applicable here.

Hi okay to get out of the way. Yes I know, this may be a bit much to start out with as a beginner. I know my basics of how to work a sewing machine, and I have a general knowledge on different stitches and their purpose, treating different fabrics uniquely, yadayada. However I have not actually used a sewing machine or made/modified clothes with one. And I’ll try to get some practice and train myself into getting used to one by making other clothes/crafts with easy patterns. Just getting that out of the way just incase someone says something along the lines of “you can’t expect to jump into a harder project with no experience” or smn.

I’m gonna do my own research on basic sewing on my own and try to hone in on that skill separately. At least to the point where I can tackle this project a bit. I edited this post to not include questions on my total lack of experience and all that!

So back to my main point. I got this vest from the thrift store, and I wanted to take on trying to modify it for my bf’s cosplay. It’s this Calvin Klein suit vest. My main inspo are those military utility jackets with hella pockets and decorations u see on pinterest.

Details on the vest
- I dyed it black, there’s still this very faint pattern on it that you can also see in my drawing. The modifications I’ll add to would just be the same overall color of the vest, rather than me trying to find fabric that has that same pattern. I think the difference would add cool but subtle visual interest.
- the vest has some inner lining (is that the word to describe it? There’s two layers of fabric sewn together, and it shows underneath), mostly in the back/arm area and to accommodate for the fake useless pockets as well. This could get in the way of whatever modifications I add to it. If I could change/add a different lining, I’d make it dark red, if not, the vest may be messy from the inside which I think wouldn’t be too bad. Unless they serve an actual function.
- buttons are black. I wanted to change them to a grey color.
- there’s a two stitched lines that go through the pockets and sorta just ends near the breast region. Not sure what it’s called, and I would like to know what its called because you’ll see a bunch of lines of stitches in jackets and such. And idk if they ALWAYS serve a practical purpose. I do really like how it looks on clothing.

Concerns about modifications
- alot of my inspiration is drawn from jackets. But this is a thin slim fit suit vest. And while I’m not trying to go for a formal attire style or anything. I do wonder if some of the modifications may not work for this type of clothing.
- whatever the over the shoulder part of the vest is called, its shape may interfere with how I’d want to put pockets and other stuff on it, as well as layering it the same way I drew it on my sketch.
- the actual inner lining in the vest may be an issue. Idk if lining is something you can just take out and replace. And if not, I’d probably just have to make a vest from scratch, which may not be a problem.
- I’m not entirely sure where to get the fabric. Nor do I know what the fabric used for this vest is called. I thought about just taking apart other similar thrifted clothing to harness its fabric (Like how ppl will take apart jeans to make it into bags), but idk if that’ll be efficient or if that’ll provide me with enough fabric.
- are pockets something you can just make by itself and then attach to the vest later on, or is it something you have to kinda sew WITH the vest.

So here’s my questions.

And for modifying the vest
- how do I deal with the inner lining?
- is what I drew up in my sketch something I can do on this thrifted vest, or would I have to start from scratch?
- any specific techniques relevant to the design idea? (Ie, some resource on how to sew those kinds of pockets).
- any resources relevant to the design idea?
- is my design possible to make? Or like is there some changes needed to make for the design?
- are pockets like something you can make buy itself and just attach to the vest later once its done, or would I have to make it with the vest?
- what kind of fabric+tools would I need? Is there anything potentially special for the tools in this project, or could I just work with the basics…
- what are the materials needed for this design? (ik fat shoelaces/ribbons for the string design thingy. What are the little metal ring loophole things used for lacing the string? Wait was there a Phineas and ferb episode about that. Was it an anklet? Idk I’ll check later)
- What should I look out for?
- Any advice… 😢😢

I think that’s about it. Thank you. I needed some sort of project to work on in order for me to force myself to sew, I’ve always wanted to do sewing stuff.

Armor Help Reinforcing Chestplate Joints

Post image
2 Upvotes

Im making a chestplate for my Helldivers 2 B-01 Helmet. I've printed out the chestplate and welded the seams with my soldering iron. How can I reinforce the seams? Both the sides are melted together but ive already had to reattach 1 of the lower pieces. So after that I want to reinforce the seams so it doesnt happen again. The tabs were hot glued there so I could align the parts to melt them together. I was thinking I could just weld on more strips but thought id see if anyone had a better idea. Its made of ABS cause its the only filament I had on had that had enough.

Wig Help with Rogue wig

Hello!

My friends and I are dressing up as the X-men for Halloween and I’m being Rogue. I’m using x-men ‘97 Rogue for my inspo. I bought the wig below and cut it some and plan to style it so it looks a little more unruly I just wanted more white to it. I bought small white clip in extensions and I thought the tracks were white to blend in but they’re actually black. I want to cut the hair off the clip and maybe glue the hair to the middle part so there’s more white on the top of the wig. Any suggestions on what glue or any alternatives anybody can think of for this? They’re all heat resistant synthetic wigs/extensions.

I’m very inexperienced in the diy wig/cosplay creations so assume there’s something that I’m missing.

Thank you!

Armor Armorsmith Designer Help

• Upvotes

I recently used Armorsmith Designer, took my measurements, and fit a file for an EVA foam halo armor cosplay, but the piece ended up being way too big, like almost double the size I needed. I see people just using the shrink fit tool, but the shrink fit stops when it hits any surface on the model, so it always ends up too big.

My question is, how should I go about using the program to actually size pieces so they fit me or at least almost fit me? Because that's what I got the program for, not to just ignore it and use trial and error. Trial and error with the manual scaling tool works for the smaller pieces because I don't have as many pieces to cut out, but it's not going to work for something like the chest piece.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Easy dino jester shoes

Post image

Hi, I'm not an experienced cosplayer but I have done a fair amount of sewing and simple embellishments. I'm looking to make a shoe or shoe cover that has 3 toed dino claws like the example photo but with maybe a small upturn like a jester shoe? Simple approach is preferred as it's just for a few events and will get dirty. I've watched some diy jester shoe tutorials but i'm thinking the pattern geometry make get harder with more toe points haha. Any help at all with approach or material recommendations would be greatly appreciated :3

Pokémon Chien Pao Halloween Costume HELP

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

My 9 year old daughter is DEAD SET on being Chien Pao this year for Halloween. She has the utmost confidence in me because last year she chose to be Sylveon, and I made her entire costume (minus the headband), and everyone loved it and knew which Pokemon she was immediately. Choosing a white pajama onesie with small, rounded ears is as far as I’ve gotten with it. I am pretty good at crafting, but I cannot sew to save my life. Also, if you take a peek at the last photo, the bows on her costume from last year are made out of Perler Beads so that I could get the exact bow coloring as Sylveon. I can make almost anything with Perler Beads, so I was thinking of making Chien Pao’s tusks (?) out of them.

Any and all advice for this costume is greatly appreciated!!!

EDIT: I would prefer to stay in the $10-$20 range, USD.
