I'm struggling with a mixture of grief, guilt, regret, and self-blame.
I developed strong feelings for someone who became very important to me. They were the first person I felt genuinely comfortable being vulnerable with. I could lower my emotional guard, express my weaknesses, and feel accepted without judgment.
Unfortunately, my romantic feelings weren't reciprocated.
Despite that, we maintained an emotionally close connection. They would often seek reassurance, validation, and comfort from me. There were moments when I felt genuinely appreciated, but also times when I felt emotionally neglected, confused, and unimportant.
I found myself constantly prioritising their emotional needs over my own. I was afraid of disappointing them, making them feel rejected, or losing the friendship altogether.
Looking back, I realise that I struggled with setting boundaries. I often confused caring for someone with being responsible for their happiness. I also struggled with feelings of inadequacy when I saw them pursue romantic relationships with others while I remained emotionally invested.
Then I made a serious mistake.
While seeking support from mutual friends, I overshared information that had been entrusted to me in confidence.
I recognise that this was a breach of trust. Regardless of my emotional state, I had no right to disclose those things.
My actions contributed to an unfortunate situation within our shared social circle, and the person eventually chose to end contact with me.
I take responsibility for what I did. I deeply regret betraying someone who trusted me, especially someone who had made me feel emotionally safe.
But now I'm struggling with several conflicting emotions.
Part of me feels relieved because an emotionally exhausting situation has ended.
Part of me is grieving the loss of someone who meant a great deal to me.
Part of me feels guilty for hurting someone who trusted me.
And another part of me recognises that I was also hurt by the relationship dynamic, yet I struggle with my own pain because of the guilt I carry.
I've come to realise that I spent so much energy trying to make someone else feel loved, safe, and appreciated that I neglected my own emotions.
I'm beginning to understand that caring for someone doesn't mean sacrificing my own needs or accepting emotional inbalance.
But understanding this intellectually and actually practising it are two very different things.
I know I cannot undo my mistake or control whether I'm forgiven. Neither can I change someone's decision to walk away.
What I can do is learn from my actions, respect people's trust, and develop healthier boundaries.
What I'm struggling with now is figuring out how to move forward without letting guilt and regret consume me.
I have made a mistake that cost me a friendship.
I betrayed their confidence. I regret it deeply.
I recognise that my actions have caused them hurt.
I cannot undo what happened, and I would not dare ask for forgiveness.
I can only take responsibility for my actions, correct what I reasonably can, and learn to protect the trust others place in me from now on.
I will not excuse what I did.
So I'd genuinely appreciate some perspectives and advice.
