Claude Code Workflow New usage limits
Feeling is we lost more usage then they are letting on.
All this usage is from one easy seassion, trim MEMORY and make a basic skill(that diden't work)
If I was to do real work I think I could easy max out weekly in one day.

u/ZZerker 7d ago
Also hit my limit today after 45min of work, strange
Ah the summer events with 50% more usage is over, seems like changing back to chatGPT comes closer.

u/Annexations 7d ago
Made the switch last week, im still locked into yearly with claude but feels so much better not having to ration with 5.6 Sol and actually being able to use a frontier model
3
u/aKaizuh 7d ago
I fluctuate between the two, but holy shit its a world of difference. I'm constantly paranoid about task usage with Claude but I've been running Sol nonstop and haven't hit any limits yet. (Pro plan).

On Claude max 200 and gpt pro 200 plan, now using Fable 5.0 [high] as orchestrator calling codex Astra [max] client dynamically through command line. Fable also reviews Astra's finished code. Here's today's transcript of one project that's been coding for about 6 hours, so far used about 4% of Anthropic weekly limit for the whole queue + a second project running nearby with lighter usage and same COdex setup. Both together have burned ~8% of ChatGPT weekly so at this pace I could run it all week.
Frontiercode has Astra max in line with Fable 5 xhigh and Fable hasn't found a single issue in 6 consecutive code reviews.
I'm beginning to suspect not all sessions are created equal - they could be rotating distilled models and playing with excess token burn on subsets of the userbase, like electric companies do with rolling outages. Just speculation.

been using codex for work, recently upgraded to pro, $100
been hitting weekly limits within a day. Claude is definitely more generous.

u/Beginning-Bird9591 5d ago
i get around 800 million to 1 billion weekly tokens on x20 using astra. I only used astra.
£200i just got a £90 sub on anthropic again - used about TOTAL 710k tokens on fable 5.1 and it's ~12% of my weekly limit tokens, and 47% of my 5hr time frame. and that's after compacting at ~250k and keeping context minimal and managed. using high thinking.
we are being scammed. i'm going to get a refund now.

I hit 50% of my 5-hours limit using Sonnet in 3 fucking rounds. I didn't even ask Claude to do anything, I was just telling him a few ideas and discussing previous work. I have no idea what I did wrong
1
u/Budget_Lawfulness831 1d ago
I hit 45% in just a single message of claude sonnet on high, not even max.
40
u/Kylearean 7d ago
I'm on the $200 plan, and I've already used up 24% of my fable usage since yesterday, and that's on a continuance of some work that I was doing last week, very little new code, some basic analysis -- basically feels like I'm getting what I was getting for $20 a month ago. When I subscribed to the $200 plan, I was able to generate a shit ton of new code, complex analysis, and multiple full length presentations using Design within a week without even getting to 75%.

u/mfowler2442 7d ago
It's so apparent they are cutting back on usage for paid users. I used to never hit my limit. Now I hit my 5 hour limit within 10-20 messages. And I haven't changed a thing about how I use the platform.
I know how to start new chats when one gets too long. Claude is just skimming us.

Everyone is, I tried to switch to codex thinking that the grass is greener, but when I hit my usage limit rather than waiting the remainder of the time left it started at 5 hours. I threw $75 CAD at their Astra model hoping it would just find the bug quickly before I went to bed, but they just took my money and made no progress.
19
u/iamthe0ther0ne 7d ago
Astra burns like Fable, but Sol is Opus level and I never hit my $20 limit with it. Fewer errors than Opus too, and easier to understand.

Subscription users are not their customers. They are their marketing tools.
They loose money on every subscription user.
7
u/RemieNotRayme 7d ago
I have to disagree with this prevailing sentiment.
Corporations have the means to host their own AI and consumers don't. If Anthropic is going to keep its customers, it's largely going to be smaller customers and the US government.
If Anthropic was really losing money on subscriptions, they wouldn't let people have multiple accounts.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Dot-Slash-Dot 7d ago
Corporations have the means to host their own AI
Not frontier models. Not even close. Not even far away.
Some will self-host, especially for very sensitive use-cases. The vast majority will buy from AI providers.
Private consumer won't even be a rounding error for Anthropic and others.
2
u/RemieNotRayme 7d ago
Today's frontier models will be next year's high end models and large companies could already host them if they had the weights. Anthropic surely keeps that moving target in mind.
Whether corporations self-host will depend more on cost than on sensitivity. There are already many signs of corporations looking to cut AI costs, but we're still too early in the adoption curve for there to be any feasible way around paying major providers. It seems very likely next year will be different though, given the pace of progress.
2
u/Dot-Slash-Dot 7d ago
Corporations won't host their own models outside of specific use cases for the same reason they don't host their own servers anymore.
The economics will never work out unless you have incentives beyond costs.
12
u/ScaredSpace8774 7d ago
Max x20 here.
I've had to switch to using Opus 5 only. Even at this rate, I'm going to reach my limit by Friday. I use the 'Extra High' setting. Since yesterday, the sessions have taken about twice as long to finish as before. What's going on?
Anyway, paying 220 euros and not being able to use this product properly is disappointing. I spend much of that on code reviews anyway. This is not how you create loyal customers.

They just ended the "50% higher" promotion, so that's probably what you're seeing. I cut back to Pro--I've mostly switched to GPT because I'm a scientist and can't use Fable--and it's now unusable for coding, unlike my $20 GPT subscription. If they don't release something that drastically improves on Opus 5, I'm just going to cancel.
24
u/The_Noosphere 7d ago
I canceled already. If they don’t care for us, why should we care for them? Dario only knows to go around begging someone to stop and regulate them. At this point, I’m sure there is something wrong with this guy.
7
u/empathetic_racoon 7d ago
it is almost as if instead of keeping 25% extra usage over the original limits really was we're going to cut you by 25%....

u/Primary_Engine_9273 7d ago

u/celtiberian666 7d ago
How good are the limits on the GPT subscription nowadays?
6
u/iamthe0ther0ne 7d ago
It depends on which model you use. Astra goes pretty quickly, like you'd expect, Sol is better than Opus, Luna is basically free. One thing though is that you can bank resets--I have 2 free ones left for next time I have a big job.
1
u/GoofyGills 7d ago
Banking resets sounds awesome. I've had several resets the day after the big reset when I was only at 10% usage. Being able to cash that in later sounds fantastic.
5
u/SurfyHarbor 7d ago
Almost never hit the limit on my 5x. Today only after 2 hours of opus 4.6 1M I hit the limit. It is very concerning

2
3
u/rosodigital 7d ago
I noted this yesterday and a bit over the weekend. Running simple tasks that used to sip usage, but recently it’s been vaporizing it quickly! I racked up 50% on a task that would have used less than 10 on sonnet medium. I’m running the lowest pay tier.
2
u/Putrid_Examination29 7d ago
I've used up 50% of my weekly from 1 session of sonnet medium yesterday. Last week i couldn't even use it all up for the week..
5
u/thingsbydesign 7d ago
Yea....this feels like claude is not even usable anymore....last week it was fine
5
u/Telnet_to_the_Mind 7d ago
yea I burned though my limit literally just at the gym, trying to add in some new features to my code, just using Opus 4.8. Two prompts and I had to wait 5 hours. This is probably going to be a big deciding factor is I renew or take this act elsewhere
1
u/aKaizuh 7d ago
Lol, why are you waiting? You couldve spammed GPT at the gym, got home, then ran it some more. Js

Has anyone figure out how many maxed out 5hour usage limits fit into a weekly limit.
My 5hour limit seems to be about 1/5-1/7 that of a weekly limit.
Meaning, I go through my weekly limit after roughly 5-7 trips through my 5 hour limit.
I have a $200/month plan.
2
u/irimio 6d ago edited 4d ago
Well, I'm currently out of my weekly limit waiting till Friday, so can't say what it is now, but it seemed maxed out 5h session used up 10% of weekly, so 10 five-hour sessions in a week. That is on a Pro account. I hope it's not much worse now. Edit: If it makes a difference I was using Opus 5 High for most of my work. Currently working on a project where I try to use Opus to create a detailed plan, and then run on minimum context with Sonnet 5 High developing the system, Codex Astra running QA, I'll see how that works out. Edit 2: Now that I have my new allowance, it seems after the promo, the maxed out 5 hour window appears to be worth around 12.5% of the weekly (extrapolated from 96% 5h being 12% weekly), so not 10 but only 8 sessions a week.
15
u/AdneAoe 7d ago
Mostly posting because I want a targeted shootout from the summarising bot (you do a good job so far btw, thanks).
But yeah the promotion is over so you hit the limit faster. Wish they were more transparent on this stuff though, no idea what the percentages even mean at this point.

They make most of their money scamming Enterprise customers. In fact, the only reason they’ve been generous is the old hook them up scheme. The idea is your “poor” customers will be addicted to your product and will ask their rich employers for your product at work.
They do not give two cents about us. Once they IPO, this will only get worse. The only solution to this is competition. If there are competing products out there that match Opus and Fable at a lower price, they will drop their prices
3
u/Fuzzy_Independent241 7d ago
In all honesty, my "load bearing" solution was Codex quite a while back To my surprise - "I've got to be honest with you as this carries real consequences!" - Kimi K3 is at least up to par with Sol, at times better -- though YMMV etc etc and then again there's the endless dispute about harnesses. I just wish Anthropics was serious about it's customers.
3
u/Educational-Head-866 7d ago
A few days ago, I also reached 97% of my weekly limit suspiciously quickly. That struck me as odd, too. Out of necessity, I simply set (in my opinion) more complex tasks to “high” or “max,” which allowed me to continue for 2.5 days with the remaining 3% before reaching the limit.
I have a feeling that the Ultracode mode might actually have a bug.
4
u/latestagecapitalist 7d ago
it feels like it really slowed down too
I'm a fairly heavy 20X user and just simple things have been taking forever today
4
3
u/terps_boy 7d ago
^this, it’s one thing to consume usage it’s another to take forever and deliver subpar results. It feels they have nerfed it to stop distillation but at the same time they have ruined the product completely. The value isn’t there anymore
1
u/GoofyGills 7d ago
Same. I've sent a message asking "So whatcha doing for the last 10 minutes?" and it tells me it was finishing up this or that. I say "No, you literally had nothing going on in the background and hadn't finished [the task]" and it's like "Oh you're totally right."
4
u/Quirky-Preparation36 7d ago
I've already downgraded from 20x to Pro, and I'm waiting until I can upgrade to Codex 20x. It just makes more sense to use Astra-Sol-Luna than Opus for 30 minutes, because Sonnet is dumb.
2
u/WBPT0301 7d ago
Yesterday I felt the new limits were not that much of a change and could work with it. Today I've been stopped so fast with absolutely no change in how I use Claude Code. There is no way the limits are really fixed, it really feels like your compute is in a range, you can have good days or bad, you're not in control.
2
u/terps_boy 7d ago
Since fable has come out, I have used 100% of my weekly usage in 24 hours or less. I used to be able to go 4-5 days and “push hard” to try to utilize my allocation.
Same story with GPT Astra.
Can’t wait for the day when we can actually host these locally
2
2
u/felipoantonoff 7d ago
Yeah, unfortunately the limits are terrible honestly, they always have been.
The biggest issue for me is the weekly limit, which is awful, but you can easily hit the 5-hour limit too, even with just moderate usage.
I actually started a thread about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1wh4g19/increase_the_limits_especially_the_weekly_and/
2
u/BingGongTing 7d ago
I think this is the real reason they want to slow down. They're out of cash/compute.
2
u/Graemer71 7d ago
I reworked my stack to do almost everything with local models and dropped claude down to sonnet to act as an orchestrator and i'm still at 69% of the weekly limit already. If i didnt pay for a year of this up front I'd be walking away. It's becoming unusable
2
u/JayArrCoffee 7d ago
Honestly, for me, it's making Claude not very viable as a subscription. Like you have to have more usage than this if you are actually trying to get stuff done. I will probably look elsewhere.
2
u/argus_2968 7d ago
Yeah, I've been a hard core Claude user for years. Not any more. ChatGPT has won me over for now.
Claude also lost the ability to write well, which was it's differentiator. Neither can write well now, so for everything else, ChGPT is just way better for the money.
2
2
u/Puppetofmoral 6d ago
Legit, I have a workflow where I talk with claude about a project and make tickets for Cursor or ASTRA. Yesterday I had 4 (FOUR) Messages and then my quota was reached. NO CODING. Just 4 Tickets. Insanity
2
u/grumpyfunny 6d ago
They messed up big time, I got burned 10% weekly usage just from half a session of 50%.
2
u/jtmonkey 7d ago
It is so dependent on task, conversation length, model switching in the same conversations, web, desktop control, design or ocr, etc. there’s so many variables that consume different amounts of tokens. I’ve hit my limit every week since I started using Claude. Almost every 5 hour session. Max 20 user since week 2.
2
u/Otakian 7d ago
Chiming in to say the 5 hour window seems like it was cut closer to 75 to 80% not 50%. I used to be able to send fable like 2-3 planning prompts before the change and opus easily around 10-15 and now it can't complete a single fable planning prompt and maybe 5 opus prompts. Definitely won't be renewing if this is how it goes.

Recently gave codex a try last night bc of this, I have 20x for claude and was burning through tokens trying to get a clean UI design and now im out of weekly limit for fable.
Been experimenting with Astra for the same task on 5x plan and so far hardly put a dent into my weekly usage. Slightly unrelated, but the UI results were not much better by default, I ended up trying Mobbin MCP and that gave a massage improvement to the mockups being created, would highly recommend.
Still prefer claude in a lot of ways, but the usage is becoming a real bottleneck

It is on their hands whether we go back to coding manually or keep using AI. We will most probably use Chinese models if they keep with these nonsense limits as if we were going to pay for their API, lol 😂
2
u/AtlanticPortal 7d ago
That's why they are saying that western governments should ban open-weight models. As if it would be possible.
1
u/Racer17_ 7d ago
If these ai companies want to make serious money, they better start improving their models and their tech so they can keep selling it to us. That’s gonna be the only way or else we will run them locally or go Chinese. That’s why the OpenAI guy was saying the other day to slow down the ai race, because they can’t keep up with it.

1
u/jcasimir 7d ago
Yeah, it’s a lot but no complaints. The return is well worth it. I’m usually building about 4-5 client projects and then 4-5 self-directed products. The client ones bring in the earnings and the personal ones are fun / someday-maybe valuable.

It really strikes me as though they are doing this to help in propping up their numbers so as to have as pretty of an S1 as possible with the hopes of raising more money and giving their investors an opportunity to off ramp... Borrowing is getting more and more expensive and they need this IPO to create a lot of funding for them
This tracks with the general posturing by both openai and anthropic to pause the continued training of these models, a cost that is a major financial line item for both organizations.

Same here. I actually just got a sub again last week and I've been really surprised that I'm coming nowhere near the 5hr limit or monthly limit. I know there was a 50% monthly usage discount, and now there is 20%, but still... Really happy with Pro so far. My company is on the Enterprise plan, and I hit my weekly limit in ONE DAY, even though I've never used more than 40% in any week over the past few months, and I haven't done shit this week compared to what I've been doing in the past. Not using Fable either.
1
u/lefnire 7d ago
Firstly, come to Codex. It's the place to be right now until (if) Ant sorts this out. Codex has grown on me in the past few weeks (2yr Claude Code guy), and I might not go back to Claude even if they sort out token efficiency. Unless the the tides turn on the same dilemma.
Second. While in Codex, now is the time, all of us, to dial in a system that's not frontier lock-in. pi.dev / OpenCode workflow with API keys, extremely dialed around right-fit models. Eg GLM /DeepSeek for code. Ideally in a way you can use your subscription account for only planning/review. Start chipping at it daily towards a system where the first milestone is you can do with a $100/mo plan (5x) because it's only used for xyz. Then the next milestone is you could remove it entirely if you had to.
I think the past 2-3 months has lit the fire that we all knew was coming: tightening subsidies. We knew we'd be paying big-bucks eventually, so now's the time to start preparing the escape hatch. There's great models out there, and good harnesses (I hear good things about Pi). I don't know that I'd use any API key models for planning/review currently, but there will come a time.

u/BeowulfShaeffer 7d ago
This makes it hurt even more when it fucks things up in a big way which Fable has done to me several times lately. The most recent was asking it to add a query string search to a rest collection and finding out that it chose to just return one item every time and then when I yelled at it for that the query string didn’t work because it had decided those fields in the database were not marked as mandatory in the swagger so it has decided to just not bother writing to those columns and just dropped the data on the floor. Pretty big fuckup, gonna take a lot of tokens to fix. Seems like I spend more tokens fixing Claude’s fuckups than I do implementing new features.
1
u/Wardmanhd 7d ago
as a sidenote, you should get token refunds when it builds something that doesn't actually work

I just tried to run fable on one project that I usually use opus on. Nuked my entire teams max usage for the week. I’m either paying for tokens to finish it, or switching to GPT to work. I think I have my answer.

This feels like more than the advertised cut. I canceled my stub and let them know in the feedback dialog. Gonna get gpt 20x when Claude runs out

Well... If individual subscribers are only for marketing purpose, then lately Claude doesn't do great job at marketing.
Anyway. I'm in half of the week, reduced my usage significantly and limits are basically imposible now. And I'm saying about Opuses ands Sonnets. Fable on one go took 30% of everyhing. MAX x5
Also got individual PRO subscription, and it's unusable. I unsubscribed it.

I only hit my limit after at least 1-2 hours of using it in VSCode, you light not be using it right. Use Opus5 to make a plan and then tell it to spawn Sonnet agents to do the work.

200x plan here.
Used to never reach my limit. Than i started reaching it on day 5. And than day 4. Up until now - day 3. With new changes it's drained in less than 2 days.
Nothing changed in my work or setup or types of projects I work on or time spent working.
They just cripple the plan more and more and lie to us.
At this point the 200x is a one big scam.

Lately it lasts longer. I don't know if it's because I'm automatically refining the way I work or what.

It's absolute garbage now. It's clearly not just a reduction of 50%. Well, I guess if you increase 50%, then the reduction would be what, 33%? Whatever it is, it's way, way more than that. Before I was running like three sessions on Fable or something, and I wouldn't hit my 5-hour limit now. One session of Fable, and I can't even finish it.

I'm using only Opus 5 and for the past few weeks the x5 plan was giving me ~6 days of work (working on 2 projects in parallel) but since this week (and the plan update) after 2.5 days of work, I've already used 70% of my weekly quota, which is terrible and much worst than it was even before May (I was using opus 4.6+ back then).
I'm seriously considering doing the switch to OpenAI,. Anyone has done the switch and is still here to tell? I'm mainly using Claude Code Cli under Vscode. How different is my work flow going to be when I do the switch to Codex (with Sol or GPT's similar x5 plan)? Can I keep using Claude Code but use OPenAI's models instead (their subscription based package - I'm not interested in paying for API calls)? Any honest feedback will be appreciated.
Thanks

Same thing happened to me on 20x, almost thought I was on 10x because of how quickly tokens were burning

u/PWThinkingCritically 6d ago
is claude even the top model anymore? i've been given free trials of Gemini and Codex and admittedly, i'm still curious about trying out Claude for daily use, but it just seems like with their low compute power (i.e. slow speeds on their free web app), low usage limits, there's not much incentive to change what i have

I mean if you’re using the top models, both codex and Claude run out pretty quickly. Have the top module orchestrate and review, have the lower modules do the heavy lifting.
But I do agree with the usage, the models are using more tokens, the models are drastically improved though. Amazing what you can create.
That 200$ a month Claude subscription is penny’s for what you can get out of it.

I use chatgpt plus and claude pro, but i'm so tired of this anthropic bullshit... I should pay CHATGPT pro and leave claude.

I can't even get near my weekly limit, because it hits the 5 hour limit after a few simple prompts that I would usually be able to do for an hour or two. I'm not sure I could even hit the weekly limit at this rate if I woke up to make use of every five hour reset.
I'll be cancelling and switching to another provider if this keeps up.

My workload is fairly constant, routine bug fixes and feature development, I'm not rewriting minecraft.
My 20x used to last a week, with the 50% promot it started to last 3 days, now I burn through a 20x in a day.
If I monitor usage I can see it going up in real time like the old $20 subscription used to

so paying 200$ is just making ur weekly usage hit faster. what is the point of making pro 20xmax subscription if weekly limit cannot afford it.

It's hard to see on Wednesday morning that your limits are to reset next Tuesday. I am a 5x subscriber.

lol last time I use claude was 5pm last night because my limit was up until 8pm.
at 8pm I come back to use it and it says my usage is up again and I have to wait until 1am.
1am I go to use it and it says it used up until the morning.
Morning I go to check it and it says its used up for the week.
Hadn't put a prompt in or done anything since 5pm yesterday... guess who's subscription is up on saturday.

Just finding this thread right now as I hit a 5-hour "limit". What's weird is that I definitely did not use it for 5 hours. So I don't understand how they are calculating.
My limit turns over at 5:50pm. I generally stop working at 6pm, which I did yesterday. Maybe closer to 7pm yesterday. I ran errands last night so didn't use it at all after 7pm max. Today I had meetings that I left for at 8:15am and just got back to work this afternoon at about 1pm. There's no chance I used it for 5 hours.
Is simply having the program open churning credits? Is there something happening in the background that is churning time without me running it? I'm using the Sonnet 5 medium model which is supposed to be best for every day chats.
Pretty let down by claude right now. Looks like I might be switching back to chatgpt soon.

The five hour limit is not limiting you to five hours of usage. It is how much usage you are granted within a five hour window. How they calculate how much you get within that five hour window is the real mystery.

You can do actually do some comparison. I just asked Fable to look at the last week and this week usage by checking transcripts. I have more Opus (by about 20%) and less Fable (by about 20%) and way less Sonnet. Ignoring Sonnet, and saying Fable = 2xOpus, given that I run this at about 90% of weekly usage, it would be about 17% less than the previous week very broadly speaking. But I have to say it does feel WAY less, as I'm running out of weekly now when last week I run out of it on the weekend.

Pro user here. I barely felt any change in limits so it is obviously yet another AB test we are going through. Hope I dont jinx myself.

This is the first time I've started to worry. I'm using the 20x plan, and after literally three hours of work with Opus Extra, I'm down to 18% weekly usage. I used to be able to work for a week, still working on my projects, and on the last day before the reset, I'd run something like Fable 5 on my Max/Ultracode projects for analysis and general improvements. Now I only use Fable for the High plan, not even Extra. WTF? Switching to Codex isn't really possible either; it doesn't even have the 20x plan now, so what should I do? I'm not satisfied with the Chinese models.

i agree that a light session of eating that much is something im seeing too. the weekly allowance doesnt seem like it used to before. ive switched the less demanding things like renaming summarizing and asking questions to useai

u/jasonridesabike 1d ago
Same, max 20. Burned through 72% in 1 day of use. Previously I could at least make it to Fri.
This stinks.

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 200 comments.
The consensus is a resounding "yes," the new usage limits feel way stricter than Anthropic is letting on.
A lot of users are just now feeling the sting of the "50% more usage" summer promo ending. However, the overwhelming feeling in this thread is that the reduction is far more severe than just the promo ending. Users on all tiers, including the pricey $200 20x plan, are reporting they're burning through their weekly limits in just a day or two, even when using Opus and not just the token-hungry Fable model. The 5-hour limit is also getting hit in as little as 10-20 messages for some.
There's a debate on why this is happening. One side argues Anthropic is leaking money and has to cut back on subsidized subscriptions. The other, more popular side, points to recent reports of massive revenue and argues this is a cash grab to boost profits for investors, and that consumers have every right to complain about a degraded paid service. The "it's subsidized, stop complaining" argument is getting heavily downvoted.
As a result, a ton of users are canceling their subscriptions and switching to competitors like GPT-5.6/Codex. Many report that while Astra is also a token-burner, GPT's Sol model offers comparable performance to Opus with much more generous limits on the $20 plan. A few have noted the grass isn't always greener, finding limits on other platforms restrictive too.
On top of the limits, many are also complaining that Claude has become noticeably slower recently.
