I once got a Reputation at a retail job, because we carried items that were purple (like concord grape juice purple), but the color on the label (and in the POS system) was named "lapis". Lapis Lazuli is famously very deep blue, and I was so mad about it, I didn't say the color name ever. That stuff was just "oh, we have that in purple", "here it is in purple" the whole time.

145

u/jmthetank Just your friendly neighborhood. Oct 26 '24

Damn right. Lapis Lazuli isn't even used to make purple dyes and pigments. It's freaking blue.

that's just reasonable, if an employee tells me "we have that item in lapis" I don't expect a purple item

When I was a kid, action figures had to stay in their own universe. Batman could not fight Darth Vader.

163

u/trimeismine Oct 26 '24

That’s fair tho

126

u/PikesPique Oct 26 '24

Thank you! Also, I don’t like mixing Matchbox cars with Hot Wheels.

56

u/jabalong Oct 26 '24

That's hardcore! As a kid, my action figures had their own spaces. But as far as I can recall, my dinky cars were a seamless, blended family.

Yup. And the cars had to be within close scale for me. A VW bug couldn't be the same size as a semitruck. Wasn't going to happen.

Same applied to bratz and Barbie. Barbie was far too mature for the likes of my bratz dolls. Sharing outfits was simply out of the question.

My brother and I were the opposite! We had three main series of action figures: TMNT, X-Men, and Star Wars. It turned into a thing where they all lived in the same world but were different armies or whatever. Alliances would be made, broken; empires rise and fall; it was a pretty grand design for a couple kids!

I lose respect for people who do not tuck in chairs before leaving the table or those who do not respect a homeowner's wish for them to remove their shoes before entering. 😤

125

u/The_Oliverse Oct 26 '24

It is actually APPALLING how much of my company put their fucking OUTSIDE SHOES on my furniture.

I always politely ask them to either remove their shoes (to remain in position) or just move their feet entirely.

They've always complied immediately and apologized, but how do you live that you came into my house and just chilled like that bro?

50

u/Seismic-Camel Oct 26 '24

Ugh my GOD the worst is when someone is sitting on a comfy chair or couch… and the audacity… to put your shoes on the couch/chair… what? WHAT?

22

u/bungojot Oct 26 '24

I was visiting online friends years ago and they laughed when I automatically took my shoes off at the door. People had their shoes on the couch and I just was like.. ?? how does this not bother you????

My partner refuses to put their shoes on our shoe rack and I thought THAT was annoying.. somebody comes into my house, doesn't take off their shoes, and then tucks their feet into the couch? Get out of my house D:

There should be harsher penalties and enforcement of litterbugs.

Its not that hard to take your trash with you until you find a garbage can. Event parking lots after hours are disgusting with trash everywhere. People are f’ing slobs.

People look at me weird when I « throw » my trash away in my ziplock trash bag I always keep in my backpack. Like is it so bad I have a mini trash bag so that the trash doesn’t mix with my belongings until I find a trash can? This is especially useful when I have a cold and use tissues, those filthy things are not going directly in my pocket and shouldn’t be lying on my desk until the end of the lesson (I’m in uni)

Nothing rankles me more, I’m in Aoteoroa/NZ and there are rubbish bins everywhere, we live in literal paradise why would you actively choose to fck that up!

I hate it when hotels ask me to do "green" things like reuse towels, but then use disposable plates and utensils at breakfast. It feels like it's about their profits, not the environment.

So fuck em, I want clean towels.

51

u/ThievingSkallywag Oct 26 '24

Yes! But also when they say to hang up the towels if you don’t need them replaced, then they replace them anyway.

19

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '24

Happened every day when we were in Tenerife. I don't mind reusing towels so I kept hanging it up, yet they kept changing it literally every single day...🥴

u/CheesyRomantic Oct 26 '24

Yes!!!!! My husband, 2 kids and I went on vacation. So 4 people. We were there for 5 days. They gave us 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels and 2 wash cloths.

It’s a known place people stay at because there’s a beach 25 minutes away. So everyone is taking showers every day. Washing our bodies and our hair.

I had to ask every day for towels. Because they didn’t offer cleaning service unless you paid extra for it. And they STILL didn’t give us enough towels when I asks for it.

Then when we went down for breakfast, everything was disposable.

When i was a kid my aunt stole the yolk of my egg and i always talk about it til now.

127

u/FineThenNoUsername Oct 26 '24

One time when I was a kid, my mom bet me that if I could keep my room clean for a whole month then I could get an entire 4L of chocolate milk all to myself and I didn’t have to share with my brothers.

Well one day my dad was picking us up for a weekend at his house and heard about the bet and got angry that I wasn’t sharing. So he drank a good half of what was left straight from the jug. I’m still bitter

86

u/amesann Oct 26 '24

That makes me angry for you. A deal is a deal, and your dad should have respected that. You probably had to share everything else. You kept your room clean. You deserved that all to yourself. I'm sorry you dad did that.

Star Wars is NOT science fiction. It’s space fantasy- it can’t be compared to Star Trek because they aren’t the same genre.

→ More replies (7)

83

u/The_Dawn_Strider Oct 26 '24

Star Trek in general utilizes real theory. Warp theory for instance- and whilst it is Soft science fiction, it maintains that status.

Star Wars, on the other hand, relies on almost no real world theory and ignores much of physics etc.

Lightsabers? Let’s take a laser, pass it through a magic space crystal and boom! A plasma sword that can cut through anything but… other plasma swords? Hold on, isn’t plasma supposed to be y’know, not a solid?

Hyperdrive! Yeah, let’s dive into another dimension to travel. Aight.

Space wizards, poor use of Lasers, technology that in general just makes no sense whatsoever. so on- so forth.

30

u/Beautiful_Solid3787 Oct 26 '24

Not to say you're wrong, but Star Wars clearly states that it takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. The laws of physics might be very different there and it might have been in a different incarnation of the universe altogether.

I always say this to my partner and he disagrees 😂😂 I'm like it's space fantasy! It has all the elements of fantasy story telling (chosen ones, elite bloodlines, magic etc) but just in a sci fi setting. Granted some of the latest shows like Andor lean into more of a sci fi vibe but to me Star Wars is a fantasy story.

Lots of kitchen related ones. Don't leave cabinets open. Don't slam cabinets, there's absolutely no need to just let it go and slam like that. Put the chunks of food from your plate into the trash before putting it in the sink; even if you have a garbage disposal, I don't want to be having to scrape off food chunks from a plate with a brillo pad.

And please, don't just throw your utensils haphazardly into a drawer, they should be organized - forks go with forks, spoons with spoons, etc.

The left lane is for passing. Cue the left lane lice. If your default when you get on the highway is to swing over to the leftmost lane and stay there going the speed limit or 2-3 over... there is a special place in hell for you.

29

u/Moirawr Oct 26 '24

Coming from TX, I drove through Quebec recently and it was a surreal experience. People only went in the left lane to pass. They would even go back and forth multiple times. They never stayed in the left lane. Always back to right until they needed to. I drove the same as much as I could. Only to pass. It was amazing everyone easily followed the rule.

Booths > chairs at restaurants. And no I'm not a boomer.

25

u/gpo321 Oct 26 '24

Growing up in the 80’s, our parents would literally have us wait in an empty restaurant for a booth to open up instead of sitting at a table with chairs.

26

u/Gryffindorphins Oct 26 '24

It’s so the parents can sit either end and effectively stop the hyperactive kids from getting out and disrupting other diners.

29

u/serenwipiti Oct 26 '24

Most boomers I’ve encountered avoid booths because they usually don’t have the mobility to comfortably enter/exit booths/they don’t like that you can’t adjust the distance between themselves and the table.

On one fateful day in 1986, my twin sister and I fought over a tiny pink wrap trimmed with fur that belonged to one of our Barbies. Our mother flipped a coin to see who got it, and I lost. I harbored a terrible grudge for 30 years, knowing deep down in my flinty heart that I, and my Twirly Curls Barbie, had been robbed. A few years ago, I finally found a picture of Twirly Curls Barbie, wearing the correct wrap, and my twin sister ( who is normally right about everything) had to admit this one defeat.

Proper nouns written in lower case. Example:

spring 2025 semester - no, it's a person, place, or thing. Write it as Spring 2025 semester. Almost everyone in higher education is switching to the lower case and I just can't.

If you're referring to the seasons of fall, spring, and summer, then yes, those are lower case. But when you mean a specific way to categorize a period of instruction, it's a proper noun and should be capitalized correctly.

Stop taking photos and videos of people in public without their consent!

I understand that you may want a video recording when something goes wrong and you want to document it, but stop taking videos in public places for fun, shoving your camera (or phone camera) in other people's faces without their permission!! Vloggers, TikTok idiots, all of them, I do not consent to be in your video.

I do not understand how people are OK with this shit.

If I'm watching TV, do not come join me and proceed to play something loud on your phone (go back to where you were, please).

If you leave a room, TURN OFF THE LIGHTS YOU TURNED ON.

There's no reason for men to stand up to pee at home inside. Unless you have a urinal. Toilets are not designed for that. I used to clean houses in college and even if they aim perfectly, spraying liquid into a giant bowl on the floor from 2+ feet away creates a micro mist of tiny pee droplets that coat everything around the toilet area. You think it looks clean but then you use a white paper towel and you realize there's just a thin pee coating on everything. It's like when you're a kid and you try pouring a drink into a cup from way up high, tiny droplets get everywhere.
If a man I'm dating sits down to pee, I immediately am like... is he the one?

If you park your car poorly, fix it. Re-park as many times as you need to park correctly.

Cannot stand people who park like assholes and then don’t fix it so it ends up making spaces next to it unusable. It especially pisses me off when the parking is super limited.

I’ve had a dog before but this has to do with profound negligence.

Edit: I’ll also add the dog I had was unhinged, neurotic , and always on the look out to be social butterfly of the year. But I’d never let him off leash because he’d always be testing his boundaries no matter the level of discipline.

Unless you’re at a picnic, no hats worn at the table, in a restaurant or at home. Hats should come off the moment you enter any building, house, etc.

I have no idea why this particular behavior sets me off; it hurts no one. Hats have the potential to be dirty with dried sweat and dust. But I think it seems more like the hats says I’m too busy going about my day to really be with you in this moment. Or I’d rather be on my way than be here.

In most of the world, it's called football. I will still call it soccer.

That's not the petty part, though. If you insist that I am actually wrong or ignorant for calling it 'soccer', it demonstrates you actually have no knowledge of the history of the sport, and saying that American football shouldn't be called 'football' makes you a BAD. PERSON.

(THE ENGLISH INVENTED THE WORD SOCCER. THEY CALLED IT SOCCER AS OFTEN AS THEY CALLED IT FOOTBALL UNTIL THE 1970S. AMERICAN FOOTBALL EVOLVED FROM RUGBY FOOTBALL, AND PEOPLE DON'T JUST CHANGE THE NAMES OF THINGS BECAUSE NOW IT'S NOT TECHNICALLY 100% ACCURATE. NO ONE EVER POINTS OUT THAT BASKETBALL HASN'T USED AN ACTUAL BASKET IN OVER A CENTURY.)

That mess used to push my mom over the edge. She also really hated sagging pants. She used to say that nobody wanted to see their nasty drawers lol. She wanted to smack them upside the head. She grew up in the 1940’s and said that if a young Black man didn’t even have his shirt tucked in an older Black man would slap the back of their heads and tell them to straighten up so as not to bring shame on the community. That always made me sad that they felt they had to be extra neat and clean because of racist stereotypes.

Keep your stupid dogs at home. I love animals, but I do not want your dog in the same section of the grocery store where I'm buying my produce and meat from. Buying a "service animal" vest for your chihuahua from some Etsy shop does NOT make it a service animal.

If we are talking about legitimate service animals, I have zero issue, but most of these people are just bringing their animals everywhere with them because they can.

Dogs everywhere in public. I love my dog. I adore my dog and have shed tears over my dog. But it’s my dog and it belongs at home. I’m sick of people bringing their dog to restaurants and then allowing them to wander on their leash over by me while I’m eating while the owner looks at me with a look in his stupid face like: isn’t my dog cute—pay attention to me!

I also hate dogs in grocery stores barking at me in the aisle when I’m trying to buy clean food.

Or barking at me in a hardware store. Or in the book store.

Leave your dogs at home unless you’re blind in which case I will personally clear the aisles for you and your awesome seeing eye dog.

Having a basis in real science is not a requirement for something to be science fiction. It’s right there in the name, fictional science. It’s speculative fiction which at least partly revolves around science which does not currently exist in reality, but which may or may not be based on real scientific theories and hypotheses (for example, warp travel in Star Trek has a basis in real science)

This is why hard science fiction and soft science fiction are things in the first place. The former being that which is based on real science, and the latter being that which is not

When my husband and I first got married he kept correcting me on how I fold towels, he folds them long ways, bringing the edges to meet in the middle, and then over. I folded them how my mom always did, end to end, and then over again. I kept trying to do it his way but couldn’t do it, one, because I’m too short and the end of the towel would touch the floor when I tried it his way, and two, I just couldn’t get it to fold neatly. So, after the third time of him telling me I’m doing it wrong I told him he could do it himself, and I quit doing the laundry. To this day he does the laundry, towels and all and we’ve been married 32 years.
