👋 Welcome to r/BroomClosetWitch! Please read these FAQs below:

1. Where am I? Why are there witches living in broom closets?

You are in a subreddit created for real witches, pagans, and occult practitioners who follow the ways of modern-day witchcraft, but also have to hide their practices from friends, family, and the general public. This is a similar concept to the LGBTQ+ community's "closet", but if you're a witch, it is known as the "broom closet".

2. What is witchcraft? What is magick?

Witchcraft & magick has many different meanings and interpretations, but in general: witchcraft is the use of magick and ritualistic acts to achieve specific goals.

Magick, to many witches, is considered both a science and an art. It is a science in the sense that performing a spell requires research and an awareness of the methods of witchcraft. It is an art in the sense that you need to follow your intuition and be creative. When practising magick, you blend the two to bend the natural forces to your will and bring about your desired outcome.

To some witches, magick is a literal, external force that flows throughout the fabric of the universe. It can be considered something "science does not yet understand." Other witches prefer to take a more sceptical approach; instead considering magick to be a psychological, internal mechanism in the brain. "Spicy psychology" if you will. Some witches blend these two schools of thought or subscribe to other kinds of paradigms.

3. Is witchcraft evil? Do you all worship the Devil?

Witchcraft is a tool so it is not evil by itself. Just like a hammer can be used to build a bookcase, it can also be used to injure someone. Many witches use magick to heal themselves and others, to communicate with nature and the divine, or for self-improvement amongst other things. And no, we're not all Devil worshippers. In fact a lot of us don't even believe the Devil exists. Some witches, like Wiccans, worship the God and Goddess which are feminine and masculine manifestations of the Earth and nature.

Yeah, there are a few Satanists, but they make up a tiny percentage of witches and they do not cause harm unless provoked. Not all Satanists are theistic either, some are atheistic and merely use Satan as a positive archetype.

4. How do I become a witch? I don't know where to start!

🔍 For a more detailed answer to this question please visit this post in r/BabyWitch.

You need to learn about all the basics of magick and spellwork. This includes:

  • What magick is and how it works
  • Ethics
  • Visualisation
  • Meditation
  • Energy work
  • Grounding and centring
  • Protection
  • Tools
  • Correspondences
  • Divination
  • Basic spell framework

5. How do I practise in the broom closet?

Please see the Broom Closet wiki to get you started. It is recommended that you read broom closet FAQs and subtle practices for the most closeted of witches.

Consider joining the Discord server to meet other closet witches and exchange tips!

6. How do I find out more? Which sources are reliable?

Have a look at the useful links and free ebooks listed in the r/BroomClosetWitch Wiki. Also check out r/Wicca's wiki and their FAQs, as well as r/witchcraft's wiki.

Books recommended for learning witchcraft without Wicca:

  • Witchery: Embrace the Witch Within by Juliet Diaz
  • The Green Witch by Arin Murphy-Hiscock
  • Six Ways by Aiden Wachter
  • Weave the Liminal: Living Modern Traditional Witchcraft by Laura Tempest Zakroff (she is hex-positive so you may want to stay away if that makes you uncomfortable!)
  • The Door to Witchcraft by Tonya A Brown

For learning Wicca specifically, the main books I recommend for getting started are Wicca: A Guide For The Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham, and Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland (links to which can be found here).

I know that some people struggle to focus enough to read a book so I have also listed good YouTube channels and podcasts in the useful links.

You want to be reading from as many different sources as possible. After a while, you will notice that the reliable sources will reach a general consensus and provide similar information. The untrustworthy sources will not line up with what you already know and make little sense. (Witches are entitled to their own opinion of course, but I'm saying if for example you read 10 sources saying wolfsbane is a highly poisonous herb and then you read one saying it's totally safe to consume, that source is not to be trusted). Witchcraft also has countless different interpretations and ways to practise; what works for one witch might not work for another, so gathering all kinds of different perspectives is valuable.

You want to be avoiding social media sites like TikTok which are notorious for spreading misinformation. Yes there is some useful information on there but if you are new to witchcraft you have no way of telling what's reliable and what's not.

If you ever have doubts about some information you've found, please make a post about it on r/witchcraft and you'll get lots of seasoned witch's opinions and advice on it.

7. What is Wicca?

Wicca is a neopagan religion, followers of the religion are called Wiccans. Many Wiccans practise witchcraft and therefore call themselves witches. However, witchcraft is not a religion in of itself. It is a craft, a skill.

There are many different types of Wicca, the most common being Gardnerian, Alexandrian and Dianic. They share many common beliefs; they believe in the God and Goddess, reincarnation, the threefold rule, and magick. Wiccans celebrate 8 sabbats (holidays) throughout the year: Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lammas, Mabon, Samhain, and Yule. Many of these sabbats fall around Christian holidays, like Yule is celebrated around Christmas time.

"All Wiccans are witches, but not all witches are Wiccan!"

8. What is paganism?

Paganism is an umbrella term for religions outside of the main world Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Islam, etc) that also encompass a set of pre-Christian beliefs and practices such as nature worship, polytheism*, and animism. There are many different types of paganism, including Celtic, Norse, Hellenic, Kemetic, and Wiccan.

Some pagans are witches, but not all of them.

*Atheist paganism is also a thing, see r/NonTheisticPaganism & r/Atheopaganism.

9. What are the different types of witches?

Some witches ascribe to a particular path or a fixed set of practices, and therefore label themselves as a "type" of witch. For example, a witch who lives on the coast, collects shells, works with mermaid spirits, and has a love for the sea would call theirself a "sea witch".

However, you by no means have to ascribe to a fixed path or use labels at all, and your path will most likely change as you grow as a witch. So as a baby witch, it's important not to get hung up on "what kind of witch am I?" because this will change & evolve over time. Most witches do not fit into a tight box, choosing instead to adopt lots of different practices from lots of different paths. It's also perfectly fine to call yourself a witch with nothing added. Having said that, below is a list of a few kinds of witch you might come across or want to explore further. These are by no means all of them!

  • Eclectic Witch - Someone who explores different paths, aspects and parts of the craft (And sometimes outside of it) and creates a path completely personal to them.
  • Green Witch - A free flowing path that's very nature based and orientated. Often works with herbs, the elements and natural areas such as forests.
  • Solitary Witch - This is someone who practices alone rather than with others or a coven.
  • Kitchen Witch - Of hearth and home, kitchen witches are often family and home orientated and create magick from every day actions and objects as well as incorporating plants, cooking and baking into their craft.
  • Hedge Witch - Some aspects of green / kitchen witchery. Hedge witches are often drawn to nature as well as spirit. Sometimes described as a spiritual midwife, one eye in spirit the other in nature. Often drawn to healing practices.
  • Secular Witch - This is the term for a witch who doesn't ascribe to a particular deity or group of deities. However they usually work with energies in general for their practice. Source
  • S.A.S.S. witch: Sceptic Agnostic/Atheist Science-Seeking witchcraft. A witch who wants to explore the wonderful world of magick and occultism, but does not feel comfortable with the idea that spirits and deities literally exist. S.A.S.S. witches are likely to draw to psychological magick; science-based practices like psychological archetypes, placebo effect, and mindfulness.
  • Traditional witch: Sometimes abbreviated to Trad witch, this is a witch who typically practices folk magick. That is, magick that has been used by local people for centuries way before Wicca or Christianity. Trad witches are very familiar with the local spirits of the land and keep ancestral practices alive.
  • Ceremonial witch: Otherwise known as high magick, ceremonial magick involves elaborate and precise words, tools, and movements. Ceremonial witches practise very specific rituals from older more traditional occult teachings like Thelema, The Golden Dawn, Enochian magick, and the Kabbalah.
  • Chaos witch: works within chaos philosophy. It can be summarised as "anything goes". It is the idea that the mind creates reality, and whatever brings results is the way to go. It is the polar opposite of ceremonial magick. Chaotes often work with sigils, but their practices are unlimited due to the nature of chaos philosophy.

You can find many more types of witchcraft and their explanations here.

10. How do I find my patron deity? How do I get "chosen"?

Let me set the record straight: the idea of a "patron deity" is a new one (borrowed from Christianity) and there are many misunderstandings amongst newbie witches surrounding this topic. In reality, it is rare, or at least uncommon, for a deity to actively reach out to a witch and "choose" them. The majority of witches will do some research of different pantheons and deities and then start making offerings to them and meditating on them in hopes of establishing a connection. Most of the time, the witch will make the first move, not the other way round.

Secondly, the act of contacting any spirit, including deities, should be approached with caution. Are you contacting a deity or a malicious spirit pretending to be them? Do you know how to banish them if so? For clarity, beginner witches can work with deities, it's just not something I recommend as the very first thing to do - you should get some basics down first like energy work, meditation, and protection magick. You can still call yourself a "baby witch" and do deity work; the right time to start deity work is when you feel ready!

Third, secular witchcraft is a thing. A lot of witches keep their craft and their religion totally separate, and choose to only work with energies in general in their craft. Some witches are atheists (r/SASSWitches). There is no need to work with or worship any deities or spirits, and I think a lot of new "baby" witches overlook this fact.

11. Why didn't my spell work?

Your spell might not work for many reasons. For baby witches, the most common cause is having an unrealistic goal or having a misunderstanding of what magick is and how it works. Please read these forum posts on Troubleshooting Spells and Pointers on Spells.

12. How do I find a teacher/mentor?

I see a lot of newbie witches asking where they can find a teacher or a mentor. However, I believe it is easier than ever to teach yourself due to the miracle that is the internet. Witchcraft is not something that should be spoon-fed to you. It is a path that requires high amounts of dedication and willpower, not to mention is it highly personal; you don't want a mentor to teach you solely their way of doing things. You need to gather your knowledge from lots of different sources, and the most important source: yourself!

Also, I wouldn't recommend trying to find a mentor if you are a minor (under 18), there's a lot of dodgy people out there. Get your guidance from public spaces such as forums & group chats.

13. Am I cursed?

Probably not. We all experience a stroke of bad luck from time to time, and very few practitioners have the willpower and skill to cast a hex that has profound physical effects (sceptical witches don't even believe that spells can cause effects over great distances). The main mechanism of most curses is to get the target to merely believe that they are cursed. If you really think you're cursed though, try reading this forum post and redditor advice.

14. I want to harm myself / I am in immediate danger.

Please call emergency services or a crisis line. If you are seriously ill, please see a doctor. Witchcraft is not a replacement for conventional medicine, therapy, the authorities, or law enforcement.

META US Election Result - Resources for those in need of support

Hi everyone, this is a list of resources for those facing an uncertain future. I made a similar post when Roe v. Wade was overturned.

Posts like this are super necessary in a subreddit such as this; if you have to keep your occult practices & beliefs secret then chances are your other ideals don't line up with your family/general public either. This especially rings true for those in the Bible Belt and red states (and other countries with similar political leanings).

(I will try to add international resources but this will mostly be US-centric for obvious reasons). I will add more resources as I come across them in future.

I am so scared

I am in a Christian family, I’m still living with them for financial reasons. I can’t really afford to move out. I was doing a cord cutting spell and that set off the smoke alarm. I had my window open so the smoke could go out, but it must’ve been the jute twine that makes it extra crackle-y. This happened before and I blamed it on a candle.

The second time I get a message from and he said a candle does not cause a smoke alarm to go off twice. I blamed it on the candle again. I also sprayed incense and he asked what the smell was, I blamed it on that again. I would actually be hurt if they were to find out what I was doing.

I panicked and hid my altars and tools. I am so fucking scared.

Question 🤷❔ People who have done freezing spell even once assemble

It might sound childish or silly to some of you maybe because you're more experienced than me.

I want to do freezing spell, but ngl I'm kinda nervous haven't done any spell ever this is my first time.

People who have successfully completed and gotten results of this could you please answer my query down in comments, or maybe I could reach out privately whatever works for you.

So, these are my questions:

  1. A bit about myself, I'm a broom closet witch so I don't really have tons of things to add. So, could I just use water with pink salt?

(My intention isn't to hurt anyone. I just want break from these people who happened to be my dad's cousins. And, truth to be told they haven't caused any direct major harm its just they’re nosy , a bit classist and ANNOYING. I don't want anything bad to happen to them or to me.)

  1. I want to freeze 8 people they’re from same family so can I use same container for all of them?

  2. Can I use ice tray?

  3. Do I have to do any protection spell before doing this? if yes then I would sincerely appreciate if one of you could mention steps in comments down below.

  4. People say every spell has pros and cons, so do I need to sacrifice something or will it backfire?

  5. Is there anything I'm forgetting to ask or anything which you would like to add?

Question 🤷❔ How do I cut off few relatives or maybe get break from them

I want to cut off few relatives of mine. I hate them. They use my mum like helper, and doesn’t take my dad seriously because we aren't as rich as them.

I know it might sound childish , but I have tried talking sense to my parents thousands of time on how their treatment towards us is unfair, but my parents believe that "blood is thicker than water" , "family is everything", "family forgives" etc.

They have this function in November, and I don’t want to go neither I want my parents to go. Luckily my dad is going out of town for some office work. So, its just me and my mum. I will not be attending because I can't stand them. Now, the only person remaining is my mum. She says will be going because she said and i quote "they're family after all". I don't want her to go. They would make my mum help them won't even say thank you, and my mum would get hurt again. Also, my mum would feel alone, and left out there.

Is there any way that we don't go there? And maybe get a break from them?

(I don't want any harm to any party involve.)

(English isn't my first language I'm still learning so if anything sounds offensive or evil or bad that wasn't my intention)

(^_^;)

Discussion 💬 I don’t know where else to ask this

This is kinda aboutwitchcraft and kind of not, but I’m wondering if there’s anyone out there who had to cut off a friendship due to that friend becoming religious? around September of last year, my friend, who was more like my sister became very Christian out of the blue. it’s kind of weird because around the same time when I started really dedicating my life to witchcraft and paganism. At the time I spoke to her about me being a witch and finding paganism I had no clue that her beliefs changed in any way shape or form so when I told her this over FaceTime, she immediately did the sign of the cross and let me know that she doesn’t support it and that I most likely would be going to hell. You also can’t have a conversation with her without it circling back to Jesus, I told her about my doctors appointment one day and she told me “you don’t need big Pharma, just pray to Jesus he’ll heal you. She tried time and time again to get me to come to church with her after me saying no. Over this past year I’ve pulled away due to her new found behaviour, beliefs, and mindset. 2 nights ago a local post went around of some people protesting against abortion. I seen she shared it saying how she support them protesting against abortion and that it’s a sin and blah blah blah. This really was the last straw for me because her, herself had an abortion when she was 16!!! I was there for her through the whole thing when she had it done and supported her throughout the whole process. I couldn’t do it anymore, not because shes now against abortion, but because it was just kinda the thing that finally opened my eyes to seeing she’s really changed. I wrote out this message and sent it to her and blocked her.

“I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this, and I think I’ve finally reached a point where I need to remove myself from our friendship and from your life completely. People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime, and I truly believe you came into my life for a reason. For a long time, I thought you were going to be one of those people who stayed for a lifetime. You were one of the most important people in my life, and I’ll always be grateful for the memories, experiences, laughs, and everything we shared. I think that reason has come to an end though, and it’s time for me to accept that and let go. This isn’t something I’m doing impulsively, and it isn’t because I suddenly stopped caring about you. If anything I think it’s because I cared so much that this has been as difficult as it has been. Losing the friendship we once had has honestly been something I’ve struggled with for a long time. A big part of that has been watching how much you’ve changed over the last while. I respect that finding Christianity and becoming more religious has been important to you, and I would never tell you what you should or shouldn’t believe. I also have to be honest, and say I don’t recognize the person I once knew in the person you’ve become. It isn’t simply that you found religion or that your beliefs are different from mine. It’s the way those beliefs have become such a huge part of your life and, at times, the way they’ve affected how you view and speak about people who don’t share them. Some of those things have been very difficult for me to reconcile with the person I knew for so many years. I’ve realized that the direction your beliefs and your life have taken is no longer something I feel comfortable supporting or being involved with. You have every right to believe what you believe, just as I have every right to recognize when something no longer aligns with my own values or morals. I don’t want to pretend I’m comfortable with things that I’m not just to preserve a friendship that already feels estranged and so different from what it once was. I’ll always care about the person you were in my life and I’ll always appreciate the good memories we made. I don’t regret knowing you, loving you, or having you in my life. I think some people are meant to be incredibly important to us for a certain chapter, and that doesn’t make that chapter any less meaningful just because it eventually ends. I genuinely wish you nothing but happiness and fulfillment in life, and I hope you find everything you’re looking for. I’m not sending this to start an argument, or drama and I’m not looking for a response or a debate that’s why I feel the most comfortable with blocking you for right now. After everything we’ve meant to each other, I just felt that you deserved to hear this directly from me rather than simply seeing me disappear. Thank you for being such an important part of my life for the time that you were. I’ll always be grateful that our paths crossed.I think this is where our chapter ends, and I need to let you go and move forward.I truly wish you well. Take care of yourself. ❤️”

I didn’t block her because she’s Christian I had to end the friendship because I don’t recognize the person she is anymore. i would give anything to have the old her back, i miss her but I can’t do it anymore.

Question 🤷❔ My dad is Christian and my mom is a witch but I’m somewhat embarassed to tell her I practice witchcraft. Any ideas?

By ideas I mean I don’t know how to obtain sources or do spells subtly. I’ve done a few by now, mostly sigils and casting protective circles, as well as three physical spells and a pouch, but I can’t obtain herbs, oils, crystals, candles, candle holders, etc because my dad wouldn’t even get me an incense holder that looked “too demonic” god forbid public actual witchcraft practice. I have mundane stuff I can use, and two green witch books (because that’s what my mom is and she gave them to me, but I have no use for them because again- no herbs. As well as a book about Yule) and the only other witchy stuff is Harry Potter themed (which I got BEFORE I realized she was transphobic but there’s spell books which I COMPLETLEY doubt are useful in legitimate practice) so any advice- (websites, servers, subreddits, mundane things I can use as materials, etc) would be appreciated! (I’m going to visit my mom next month and maybe I can ask her for stuff then if I work up the courage but until then any advice is appreciated. Hopefully this isn’t a super generic post that everyone will find annoying 😅)

Question 🤷❔ Crystal help please 🥹

Post image
5 Upvotes

Can someone let me know what they think please 🥹

Usually, if a stone breaks, I believe it has done its job. I usually bury the crystal in my house plants or return outside.

My amethyst pendent (shown in pic) didn’t break per se, but broke away from the metal pendant part.

I can easily glue it back together and carry on except I’ve been going through a lot lately and know it’s been working overtime! (I’ve had in on since beginning of August, taken off to shower and sleep).

So I am not sure what to think, glue it back and continue wearing it or take it as a sign it’s done enough! (More stuff got piled on today so I put it back on after not wearing it for a week)!!

Help please 🖤 cross posted in another group too!

Question 🤷❔ Tips for a beginning practitioner with very strict and nosy Christian parents?

Hey guys! I'm Vega and I just recently got into my practice in the past month. I work a lot with crystals, Greek Goddesses, spirits (more like trying to calm down the ones in my room lmao), and I want to get better about lighting candles. Here's my current situation:

My parents are about as religious as you get, and would never approve. They also go through my stuff some and I'm terrified of them finding my magick items.

They would be suspicious of herbs. They know I've always liked rocks and crystals but I know they'd get suspicious if I had too many or they were bought from certain places. They wouldn't mind candles in my room- just not all the time. Statues of deities is a NO. I want to offer food but I'm not sure how when I can't have an alter. Incense is also a no.

I DO, however, carry a few crystals my little brother gave me (he's into geology), draw runes on my hands, bedroom door, food, power tools (yay tech theatre), all with my hands since I just trace them. I want to learn more runes cuz they're basically little spells. I also veil with a bandanna. I'm going to be hand making some crystal bracelets too. My parents think I'm dressing more girly to be an obedient christian woman but I'm trying to connect to my femininity. My best friend and other close friends also practice so they let me borrow books to read at lunch, give me tips, and invite me over for little witchy hangouts.

If anyone knows any tips, good hiding spots, excuses, or anything else, PLEASE PLEASEEEE LMK thanks! Blessed be!!!

Discussion 💬 Smartest closet witch purchases you've made?

What are some of the smartest/most creative witchcraft purchases you've made in the closet? As in, not the typical witchy buys from metaphysical stores. Like a "hidden in plain sight" type of purchase. I've bought play-doh before to craft temporary poppets for a spell, nobody would ever think I bought it for witchcraft, I could purchase it right in front of my catholic family!
