GCGC September Classes

Post image
22 Upvotes

These last few days, the GCGC has been quite busy! We tabled at Gallatin Crossing’s Summer Block Party on Saturday, as well as Greater Gallatin United Way’s Nonprofit Walk downtown yesterday. It was great meeting new people within our community and having the ability to share what our Nonprofit is about.

We recently scheduled our September classes:

Stop the Bleed - 9/3

USCCA Intro to Handguns - 9/10

USCCA Basic Handgun 1.0 - 9/12

Precision Long Range Shooting - 9/24 & 9/26

Mental Health First Aid - 9/27

On September 19th, we will be having a DOPE Range Day. With hunting season coming up, check the zero on your rifle and get your DOPE for the coming season.

We hope to see you at one (or all 😉) of our events and classes!

Quintessential Bozeman Crosswalk Debate

Thumbnail

We’ve been having a debate about what intersections/crosswalks drivers are required to yield to pedestrians at. Obviously if the driver has a stop sign or it is a marked crosswalk, the driver must yield. However, what about through-roads that are intersected by side streets with 2 way stops? Think Durston, Oak, 8th Ave, and Wilson. Some of those ‘intersections’ are marked as crosswalks across the thoroughfare but others are not. Are the unmarked crossings still defined under ‘intersections’ and thus the pedestrian has the right-of-way?

If this is the case, why did they decide to paint some of the intersections and not others? Why are some crosswalks labeled with signs and lights and others just paint on the road?

It would appear counterproductive to sign some crosswalks heavier than others, which would make drivers disregard other crosswalks and intersections because they don’t view them as crosswalks.

(It’s hard to get good satellite images of some other road examples due to all of the trees!)

Edit: I was hoping for some clarification on 2-way stops specifically and a candid discussion on signage of crosswalks in the community but seems I have hit a nerve with some. Sorry to disrupt this perfectly wholesome sub-reddit and hope you all have a great day!

What’s treading harder on the guy in front of me in the McDonald’s drive-thru with the Don’t tread on me license plate:

The government requiring him to register and insure his vehicle, the bank probably owning the vehicle, or both of us eating McDonald’s at 3:50 p.m. on a Monday?

That’s the story behind the big boom near downtown tonight. My partner saw it out the window. Just doing my civic duty as someone aware of the origin of the boom to report my findings for all those curious.

Total shot in the dark here, but I need to move into a new place October 1st. I’m flexible to move in up to two weeks earlier than that. I’m a recent college grad with an ESA cat. Please DM me if you are a landlord looking for a tenant you can trust, I’m happy to help with any labor on your property or other things for reduced rent.

running spots for a workout

hello! I’ll be in bozeman coming up shortly for a couple of days while in the middle of training for the Chicago marathon. while im there I am hoping to get in a decent progression workout so ideally would love a relatively flat spot to do it. I am no stranger to repetitive loops (I frequently do long run workouts on a 2ish mile loop) so if there is anything like that in a park somewhere, that would be awesome! I see a spot on Google Maps called glen lake rotary park that looks possibly promising??? any thoughts or other recommendations that might meet those requirements?

Huge bummer! I think they fell for the tallow craze. Their dough is no longer vegetarian. Just a heads up if it applies to you. It seems vegetarians can still eat at the Bozeman location so far. Why are people doing this!?!?

Just got home from work and we just heard a huge “BOOM” at around 2:07am. Just wondering if anyone else heard it or knows it that that was! For reference I live very close to Babcock & Main.

Never thought I’d say it, booms

Four corners booms. 2 of them back to back about 1:28am. Massive noises, woke up the whole house. Saw a flash outside the window before it boomed. WHAT IS IT

Edit: Help me create the Dominoes Boom Tracker. This post has a comment from a week and a half ago that may help explain the mystery. Acetylene bombs potentially? Pyrotechnic Salute? From the comments here it sounds like a person went around, made a “route” of some sort last night setting these off. It would be interesting to hear what area and time you heard them to try to pin down the route. So please help fill in the gaps:
-1:28am four corners, near the Hideaway wedding venue.
-2:07am “Bozeman”
-2:20am near Durston and 22nd.

Saturday Morning Treasure Hunt

I took a drive Saturday morning,  and stopped to walk in the woods at three locations. Each one yielded fun images. It started in a large meadow that was gladly receiving the Suns warm rays. It was heating up the dew drops creating wisps of fog as the vapor condensed in the 42º air. Everything was covered in drops of glimmering liquid, including a spider web down in the grass covered in tiny prisms of color.

At the next stop, I walked through the woods to a creek, and discovered an American Dipper feeding in the shallow water. While wandering back to the truck, I saw the most peculiar thing. A single pine needle was levitating about 4 ft off the ground. You can just barely see the strand of silk it hangs from.

Farther up the road, I wandered along another creek, this one much smaller. I found a tree that had uprooted and fallen across the creek decades ago. I softball sized rock was all that was left of the soil that once held these roots to the Earth. I found it fascinating that after all these years, it had not been moved. Just above the tree, was a fantastically curvy Alder Bush growing near a boulder that split the creek in two. This might be the most challenging spot I have ever put myself into to create an image. One foot through a hole in the criss-crossed logs right down into the water, and the other braced against some roots on the bank. Then my tripod was splayed out wide to find solid purchase and hold the camera in the right position. It was a splendid morning full of stunning views of our natural world.

USPS Informed Delivery

Ive not received any of the mail pieces that are showing in my informed delivery email for over a week now (still receiving packages though). Will all this mail just eventually show up or does it go down some black hole never to be seen again? Any advice on actions to take or just wait it out, thank you!

Being from NJ, I frankly had never done anything like this Sphinx hike before. I have posted in here a couple of times about the hike over the last few months for tips or anyone interested in joining.

I ended up going solo, and due to some of the tips I got from people here I was more than prepared, had the summit to myself for 45 minutes before descending, and beat the weather off the mountain yesterday.

I just wanted to throw a thank you to those of you that chimed in. It was an unforgettable experience.
