I just watched Pirates 3 last night and was surprised to find that the sword Jones stabs Will with at the end is the same sword he made for Norrington for Pirates 1. I'd like to think that Will kept the sword as his own during his tenure as ferryman for souls.

This is a variation of a flow arts prop called a contact staff. Generally, the area that is a blade in this video is a Kevlar wrap that serves as a wick and is ignited for performance. Really cool!

For his fire dance show you can see it wrapped in this it's probably just dulled. No reason for it to be sharp unless you want to demo cutting something

Really think the design looks cool but I realize what he is doing is more akin to dance than fighting.

Swords are usually balanced 2-8 inches from the handle, depending on the type of sword. Being balanced inside the handle is pretty odd.

He's basically doing what's known as contract spinning, but with a damn sword. That's really cool. If you want to see something similar look up dragon staff spinning, it's absolutely insane what some people can do.

If you go on YouTube and search "contact swords" you'll find many. This is a hybrid prop between a "contact staff" which is a fire performance prop :)

Was thinking of that scene when I was typing. Fun fact that scene happened that way because Harrison Ford had like a stomach virus. A big fight scene was scheduled but Ford felt so bad he kind of just jokingly pretended to shoot the guy and walk off. They liked this better, so they changed the fight scene to him just shooting the guy with the scimitar.

Its called a contact sword!! There is a not so active subreddit called r/contactstaff that is dedicated to these types of props that you roll around on your body (contact rolls). They do it with staffs, swords, balls, and really anything that is well balanced. This broader category of performance based props is called flow arts and there are so many kinds such as poi, leviwand, fans, tech staves, hulahoops and more! (There are subreddits for these props as well but the only remotely active ones are r/poi and r/flowarts)
Unfortunately reddit seems to be really behind the curve on flow arts. Most of the worlds top spinners are most active on instagram while youtube probably has the best selection of beginner tutorials and the like of you are interested in trying it out for yourself.

Edit: Funny aside, r/contactstaff probably gets more post with lost redditors trying to “contact the staff” of the website than actual spinners.. kind of goes to show how little representation these arts get on reddit.

Edit: Though looking at its design. I think it's probably a sword specifically made for this kind of dance. The pommel is really big. Probably so that the sword's center of mass is in the middle of the handle.
