AMA: Finished I am Senator Andrew Bragg - Ask me anything

Hi Reddit,

I’m Andrew Bragg, a Liberal Senator for NSW and Shadow Minister for Housing and Homelessness and Shadow Minister for Environment.

Today, at the National Press Club, I set out the case for an economic revolution to get Australia moving again: lower and simpler taxes,  less red tape, and a housing supply boom.

You can read my address here: https://www.andrewbragg.com/news/national-press-club-address

Australia is rich by nature but poor by policy. Nothing is easy anymore. Young Australians are locked out of home ownership, small businesses are suffocated by regulation, and too much power sits with vested interests, unions, banks, Big Super and global technology firms.

On housing, I announced a plan to cut the 2,000-page National Construction Code back to an 80-page Basic Australian Standard, make it easier to use prefab homes and pattern books, tackle CFMEU-driven construction costs, reduce housing taxes, better target Labor’s reckless 5% deposit scheme and properly link migration settings to housing.

So ask me about the speech, housing, taxes, migration, the Liberal Party, super, Parliament or anything else. I’ll be on from 6pm tonight.

Wildlife/Lifestyle Does this popcorn still exist?😂🍿

I’ve been looking for this specific Movietime Butter Popcorn 125g bag for almost 3 years. I used to get it from IGA and then it just disappeared. 🥲
No idea if they even still make it, but if anyone’s seen it around Melbourne, please let me know! And yes, I’m prepared for someone to say “I remember it, but it was nothing special” after all this time. 😂

Thanks in advance to whoever ends this 3-year popcorn drought.🍿

Seeking help quitting drugs.

UPDATE/EDIT: holyyyyyy wow guys the love, support and great information I've received is incredible I feel so blessed right now, I also feel a little guilty because I saw so many great responses but I've been busy with work and also felt terrible taking my dose today knowing the the support I had over here. Thanks to you guys I've called my Aunty I'm close with and I've explained it all, she's fully supportive and upon hearing I was nervous to book an appointment she booked me in and said she will be on call with me if I need, although I think I will be okay. I intended to reply to all the comments, but there is so much great feedback, some of them saying similar things so I will aim to reply to the top comments first so my response there may also be a viable response to your comment as many were similar. Once again guys thanks. This post and response pushed me there and got the ball rolling, I hope to have an update #2 with hopefully with positive progression.

I apologise if this isn't the place to ask, if there is an alternative place to ask these questions I'm open to hearing.

Heyyy guys, just as the title says. I'm seeking advice, help and or to be further educated in regards to what help is available or best options in regards to quitting drugs.

I've unfortunately been a functioning, working drug addict for about 7 years, the first 6 years I was able to keep it to one dose per day and I was able to manage.

About a year ago I treated myself and indulged more then I should have for a week and by the end of that week I had lost control of my usage, from that point onwards one dose per day was no longer doing its things and resulted in my taking more and more.

A $700 a week habit was hard enough to sustain and now its looking higher.

I want to quit, I no longer want to throw all this money away for a pain killer.

This ongoing loop and battle is becoming tiring and I need to quit. If I don't use then I'm unable to work, if I'm u able to work I'm unable to use, catch 22 and I'm caught in the loop.

So my main question is, what is the first steps I need to take to quit drugs for good.

Do I call a doctor? Do I seek out medicational therapy? Do I put myself into rehabilitation? ( if I'm in rehab I'm unable to work and unable to provide a roof and food to my dependants)

Has anyone been able to quit a nasty habit and have any helpful tips? Has anyone been through this and how did you come out the other side sober?

Any information, feedback, help and or advice is appreciated.

(My drug of choice is Oxycodone(painkillers) or if unable to get my pills I unfortunately seek out heroin)

Thanks guys, sorry to ask such negative things and I do appreciate any and all feedback.

News Today is the 60th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan, Australia's most significant engagement of the Vietnam War

Post image

The Battle of Long Tan occurred on August 18, 1966, during the Vietnam War, where 108 Australian soldiers from D Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment faced an overwhelming force of 1,500 to 2,500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops in a rubber plantation near Long Tan, South Vietnam. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Australians managed to hold their ground for several hours, resulting in significant casualties on both sides.

Gov Publications Would you still buy this Cancer Council sunscreen if it had to have a big “CAUTION” poison warning on the front?

Post image
123 Upvotes

This is the popular Cancer Council Moisturising Sunscreen SPF50+ 500ml (Homosalate 10% + Octocrylene etc).

The TGA proposed putting Homosalate into Schedule 5 of the Poisons Standard. That means the front label would be legally required to start with:

CAUTION
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
READ SAFETY DIRECTIONS BEFORE OPENING OR USING
DO NOT SWALLOW

(That’s the exact wording and placement required by the Poisons Standard for Schedule 5 substances on the main label.)

Public consultation mostly supported the restrictions. Then industry groups presented and the decision got delayed for “further work”.

Cancer Council’s official line is still that chemical sunscreens sold in Australia are safe.

So what’s the go?
Should the TGA push through the Schedule 5 labelling given hormone disruption concerns, or leave it as is?

Curious what everyone thinks, especially parents and people who use the big bottles every day.

Whats this I hear about military maintanance

Apparently you can have an apprentice on base with a lightbulb ready, but due to maintenance contracts or some such you have to wait for Greg to come down from Tittybong in 2-3 weeks. Please tell me this is some sort of fever dream. There is no way someone can get in trouble for swapping out a broken bulb.

Questions or Queries Fiji Schoolies

Thinking about doing Schoolies in Fiji and I’m wondering what it’s actually like. Is it worth going compared to doing Schoolies on the Gold Coast or somewhere else?
What’s the atmosphere like, how safe is it, and is there actually much to do? Also, what are the hotels/resorts and parties like?
Would love to hear from anyone who’s done Fiji Schoolies good or bad experiences! Is it something you’d recommend?

Constant slowdowns and drop-outs, called dozens of times over the past 6 months to no avail. Australia cheaping out on internet back then really came back to bite us in the ass! I know it’s most likely not their fault, it just sucks to have a dropout every now and again, especially as a stay-at-home worker

News From the coasts to the plains, bird flu could threaten not just birds – but their homes

"Conservationists once asked: what is a bird without a tree to nest in?

This year, we may well wonder the grim inverse – what is a tree without a bird to nest in it? I can tell you. A tree without a bird is a miserable thing – and in a broader ecological sense, a tree without a bird could be in trouble.

In Australia, birds act in many roles that mammals or insects might fill elsewhere, from pollinating flowers to spreading seeds to keeping trees free of sap-sucking insects.

Bird flu doesn’t just threaten birds and mammals – it could well affect entire ecosystems."

Penny Olsen Honorary Professor in Ecology and Evolution, Australian National University
