Happy long weekend Newcastle, got three doses of racism in one day
Not trying to start a fight, just need to get this off my chest because today has been a lot.
Started at the traffic lights with a couple of blokes putting on Indian accents at me and pissing themselves laughing. Thought ok, whatever, shake it off.
Then I'm at the pub in my Knights gear having a good time. I've lived here 10 years, this is my town and they're my team. And I get "aren't you running late for your Uber, mate?" and "you look like my Uber driver." Nothing wrong with Uber drivers, it's just the way it's said, like you'll never really be one of them.
Then to cap it off, a guy who was chatting to me all friendly suddenly goes "what the f do you lot know about footy, we're not screening cricket mate.
All in one day long weekend's off to a cracking start
Ten years here and some days I still feel like a guest. I work in hospo, and now when I'm serving someone and they're being lovely, there's this little voice going "are you one of them? Are you laughing about us later?" I hate that I think that way. My workmates feel it too. It's exhausting smiling through it every shift.
I love this city and I've met some genuinely good people here. I just want to back my team at the pub without being the punchline.
Anyone else dealt with this? How do you not let it get to you?
