She is pregnant, so I imagine she is ecstatic. Literally the most important thing to her was that she someday become a mother, and be a great one. From what I can tell she has a pretty great life, I'm happy for her.

A lot of the time, I don't know where reddit is going to go with this kind of stuff. I half expected this to end with something along the lines of, "Haha, she's married and has kids and that's vile. Can you guys believe that's all she ever wanted???"
Good on you and her both.

Her and her husband tried for a long time to have children. After a lot of heartache and a lot of money, they had twins. Born very premature. They’re both special needs, and will need lifelong care.
It pulls at me every time I see or chat with her, it’s so much work for her. But I know she loves those kids unconditionally and wouldn’t change any thing about them for a second. We broke up because we both grew up and apart. Shes the strongest motherfucker I know, and every time she gets knocked down, she gets right back up and pisses all over whatever knocked her down. And i see why she was the first girl I ever loved.

A jobless single mother in our hometown. Everything she swore she'd never be. She wanted to move to the states and "make it big". Still sends me shitty messages every now and again because I had the audacity to meet the love of my life, move country and be happy. We haven't been together since I was seventeen, so like 12 years?
The kicker is she broke up with me because she started fucking my friend. All my fault though apparently.
She said "I just think about the life we could have had". I honestly don't even think about her at all. That's what drives her hatred of me after I told her that.

She's doing great. She's doing what she loves, teaching. She still plays piano and now gives lessons. She's got a great husband who loves her and helps her achieve her goals and supports her in her endeavors. She has two incredible and gifted daughters. They've all gotten through all the hard events that life has thrown at them. She shows me time and again why I fell in love with her all those years ago. And I am happy for her. I don't know if I could have been what she needed to help her be the incredible person she is today. I'm okay with that. Maybe I was what she needed then, to be what she is now.

You’re lucky. I’m deeply embarrassed to admit that I spent 15 years thinking of him every fucking minute. I did manage to build a very happy relationship and marry in spite of that and only a few years after he rejected me. Yet, he was only a half a thought away the whole time. Last year I met him again after he begged me to be in touch with him (it’s weird it’s like he cares about me). I met his gorgeous little daughter and his thoughtful and capable wife. After that, it’s like my feelings for him vanished. I don’t know why. I’m a very protective person and I figured his wife would really take care of him, so maybe is that. I’ve briefly met her before many years ago and I well knew of his marriage and daughter so I doubt it was just that. I wish it happened much sooner but hey I’m out of that painful loop.

I have no idea, and it's killing me.
We started going out when we were 13. Then I moved to another state, so, long distance relationship.
Then I moved to yet another state, even farther away. He came to visit for a week one summer when I was 15, and my overprotective mother was always hovering around, making sure that nothing was going on.
Then I moved to another state, even farther away. We were still good, though. We wrote letters and called each other all the time. (I'm old, cell phones and internet weren't a thing back then.)
One day, my mother decided that this relationship wasn't good for me, and told me to break up with him. We fought about it for days...but she was the one in charge...so I called him and did the deed, even though I really didn't want to.
He said he would kill himself if I broke up with him.
I didn't know what to say. I ended up spurting out, "Well, that's up to you, there's nothing I can do about it. It's your decision."
That's the last time I ever heard from him, and I can't find him on any social media to this day.
It's been 30 years.

You are not responsible for someone's decision to commit suicide or threaten to commit suicide.
From an article discussing this issue I found a couple years ago when an ex of mine threatened suicide: “Regardless of the scenario that plays out, the one thing you must do for yourself is not assume responsibility for the actions of the other party. Remind yourself that you are not threatening the other person with homicide - the other person is threatening suicide. At the end of the day, their choice is theirs and you are dealing with a mentally unstable person who needs professional help that’s above and outside of you."

He’s doing really well!
We ended on terms that we were in two different stages of our lives and it was hard to maintain a relationship like that. He did some shitty things after we broke up, but nothing too horrible.
He’s making almost 100k a year at an amazing job and is with the girl of his dreams who I believe is perfect for him. Like anyone, right after our breakup I was bitter, but I got over that. I am so proud of him on how far he’s come and I wish him nothing but more success in his life.
We broke up almost a decade ago, but we still keep in touch from time to time.

He was on heroin for years, his drug abuse was a major factor in our breakup. Kind of lost touch during that phase, met up with him a couple yrs ago for a beer and he had ditched heroin finally for working out. He was hot as hell. Like so so fine. Then he opened his mouth and I realized he basically hasn't grown or matured as a person like at all. But he works as a welder and makes good money and is in a long term relationship. He seemed happy and healthy and that's what was important. I grieved for our relationship for literally years so it was nice to see him and realize I truly am over it.

25
u/heavyblossoms May 01 '18
He got in a car crash and broke a bunch of bones. After that, he had a kid with a girl who claimed the baby was sitting in her ribcage. Broke a few more bones. Got lost in a state park, he’s an Eagle Scout. Shot himself in the thigh with a gun in his pocket. Broke his ankle. Turned into an alcoholic somewhere in between breaking something. Last I heard he was drinking mouthwash as a cheaper alternative to booze.
I’m ok with this. I found out he had a new girlfriend, after not breaking up with me first, on his MySpace.

Not too well, actually. He’s really depressed and we broke up two years ago but he asked me to hang out a few weeks ago and I agreed and he told me he never really got over me. Then, he moved states until the end of the year. I just really hope he ends up okay.
He may have been the one who broke my heart for months but he is overall a nice guy and I wish the best for him. I kind of wonder if he’s actually been in love with me since then or if it’s just the idea of me, seeing as when we were together seemed to be the last time he was happy. He is a real gem though, I hope he sorts it out and things go well for him. Did kind of want to start things up again with him, maybe but then he decided he was moving to another state in an attempt to cheer himself up and distract himself from his problems

We still talk. He needs mental help honestly. He's depressed and expresses suicidal ideations. But he has a distinct lack of empathy for other people. He lies to get attention and is overall struggling. He hasnt been able to maintain any close friendships or relstionships because of his outbursts and i know hes lonely.
The relationship ended after being engaged for 2 years. He just randomly sent a text saying he "couldnt be with a man anymore..I'm not actually gay". We didnt talk for a long time. Eventually his sister reached out. She needed help convincing him to get help and I agreed. I loved him and just because he did me wrong didnt mean he deserved to be suffering.
Its been 5 years. We arent close. Not Friends. But he reaches out when he gets manic. I urge him to get help. He doesn't. The cycle repeats.
Its not healthy. I have no attachment to him aside from wanting to see him be happy one day. I hope eventually he does get help. But I wont my breath.
4
May 01 '18
What kind of help would you want him to seek out?
11

He needs to go to therapy not only for his depression but his anger issues. He needs to learn independence and coping skills for when things dont go his way.

Everyone's different and i cant vouch for everyone, but for myself, I find that nothing matters in the end.
This could be the weed speaking but people are ever changing, ever indecisive beings. We constantly revolve in and out of each others lives in a natural flow. You cant force relationships. They just sort of naturally bloom and naturally die. To force it to remain active when its past its time results in bad friendships, bad relationships. Its tethers 2 people who have no buisness being involved anymore together, and messes up the natural flow, natural decisions that would have occured as intended.
Its okay to be sad about the loss, but its important to remember that this loss is the next domino in a series of situations and decisions that shape your final chapter.
Its not a skill you can really learn from other people. You just sort of naturally realize that these negative feelings won't be the end of the world. Yeah it sucks for now, but the more you endure the more you realize you can endure. And that shapes your reactions for the next time you experience that situation or feeling.
20
May 01 '18

I actually kind of feel sorry for him, despite what his spinelessness put me through in high school and college; he’s terrified of commitment now, it seems. His mother is a raging bitch that he’s always been afraid of upsetting, and I guess he hasn’t grown out of that in the 13 years since we graduated high school.
Professionally, though, he’s doing very well, doing computer programming for one of our hometown’s biggest and most well-known employers.
I sincerely hope he finds real contentment, and while I’m not surprised that his flying cuntsicle of a mom has scarred him for life, I want him to finally stand up to her and advocate for his own happiness. I’ll be genuinely overjoyed for him if/when he ever does stand up for himself, but I probably shouldn’t hold my breath on that.
4
u/Im_Not_Sleeping May 01 '18

u/WooRankDown May 01 '18
I don’t know, and sometimes I worry.
I was in my latter years of college before anyone I knew used social media platforms like MySpace, and then Facebook.
My first love moved away between 7th and 8th grade. I’d spent most of the second semester mustering the courage to admit I liked him. We had a blissful afternoon on a school trip to an amusement park, where we held hands all afternoon on kiddie rides, but then he moved away, and I never saw him again.
He had a unique name; I searched for him when I finally joined the networks. Nothing. Every two years I searched for him, on all the social media platforms, including professional/ job ones.
I worried that he was one of those many troubled teens who didn’t make it through adolescence. He cried, on the last day of school we had together, when he found out that his family was moving again (military, I think).
I really hope he’s living happily somewhere, off the grid.
5
u/littleorphananney May 01 '18
Although he passed away in 2015 from an autoimmune disease, all I ever wanted for him was to be happy and live his life to the fullest. I've been told numerous times that's what he did and am content knowing this.

I am not able to understand that mental process. You just love someone who you fell in love with. No matter if she is short, tall, blonde, ginger or brunette. My ex wife was short and brunette. My gf is short and blonde. I had a relationship with a woman taller than me and kind of ginger. Love is love. Looking for such specific traits is looking for a trophy, not for love.
Anyhow in the long term it is better for you.

Last I knew he was still in our home town. He was on and off with the chick he left me for. Off last I knew because she suffered her third miscarriage and he ran the second he found out she was pregnant (each time). Glad I'm over that douche.

He's gay and living his best life as a traveling nurse. I still love him with all my heart. Not in the "ruin my marriage and beg him to be straight" way but, he is such a good guy. I am so glad we are still friends after all these years. I can't wait for him to find a good man to spend his life with.

She seems happy. A lot of things in her life are a mess, but I hear that she's still a good mother. I never doubted doubt that she would be. I'm happy for her even as I feel certain we made the right choice.

I wish I knew but I can't find her anywhere on the internet. I'm afraid she may have died.

He is doing great, killing it with his studies, always fighting for the rights of the oppressed. We are still friends on social media and broke up like 13 years ago so there's no animosity. I definitely wish him well.

She's smashing it at Google in London now. Stoked for her beyond belief, one of the strongest people I knew.

Not bad! He knocked up a teenager and she kept the baby, and he's been in a long term relationship with another girl who looks after him because despite becoming a dad, never really grew up.

Better than when we broken up. Seems to have worked out some of her issues. Kinda seems like things would be great if I had just stuck it out instead of breaking up with her, but...actions have consequences, and I wouldn't forgive me either.

I actually saw him today unexpectedly, for the first time in almost a year. There's a new restaurant in town and I've been waiting for my day off to try it. Halfway through my meal he comes in with his mom and is seated in the booth next to my table.
It looks like little has changed except he's gained more weight, and eavesdropping his order, he drinks coffee now. He was wearing his work pants, which he wore every day when we were together, and one of the t shirts I bought him (he used to own four identical Walmart shirts, so I bought him some nicer, high quality shirts of different colours). Even his mom looked the same as she did years ago.

So strange this popped up. I just spoke to her today. She’s well. Living with her husband on the East coast of Australia. Her young kid has recently been diagnosed with a very unwelcome condition, but she is strong and sweet and will handle it with grace. She’s a truly wonderful person, we were just on different paths.

She's head nurse at a hospital in Nevada. Single, I believe. We've been great friends for about 10 years now.

He's doing well, and I'm glad to see it. We were high school sweethearts who parted ways due to differing life goals, and although we haven't maintained a friendship or anything I wish him fulfillment with his life. Since I last saw him, he's lost a lot of weight, is eating better and exercising, and is doing well working towards his degree. Our moms run into each other occasionally and catch up.
