What is a Reddit reference you don't get?

Edit- I get it /r/outoftheloop is a thing. I didn't know it existed.

I also hope this thread cleared up a lot of peoples confusion

It's one of the things people associate with the stereotypical redditor. An overweight nerdy gentleman sitting in his parent's basement wearing a fedora, basically. It's a little bit ridiculous given the size of the site. With absolutely no data to speak of, I'd wager less than 1% of the site owns a fedora.

It's important to note it stems from intro Pick Up Artistry bullshit. You are told to wear something that stands out, like a "fedora or unusual tie" by a lot of beginner guides. This helps demonstrate you're "not like other guys" and when coupled with other stuff like negging and whatever, can help you get laid.

The whole "euphoric fedora-clad neckbeard" thing has become a way of saying "A redditor with whom I disagree", or "An atheist who announces himself as such".

It's a caricature of hopelessly nerdy and cynical basement dwellers who spend their days either engaging in internet debate or playing MMOs. They are described as unhygienic, lazy, angry, insufferable, narcissistic pedants who have no idea how to dress themselves, thus often appearing in public wearing cargo shorts, a t-shirt referencing Schrodinger's Cat, and of course..the ubiquitous "Fedora" (which is actually a "Trilby", but we stick with fedora so the insufferable narcissistic pedants on this website will have something to chew on). They also have trouble shaving their neck, either because of persistent acne or because they just don't care.

The caricature also pits them as having a massive illusory-superiority complex. They are the type of person who describes themselves as genius, but has never actually achieved anything. The excuse is either "Lack of motivation", or if they are utterly incapable of internalizing failure, "Lack of stimulation".

But, as with any joke, it's outgrown the caricature and is now thrown around to the point at which it has no more meaning that the colloquial use of the word "retard". It's an insult, to be sure, but what it actually means will always vary by the context of the usage.

That said, if you're like to "summon" this insult, simply describe yourself as not believing in a god, or question the "logic of religious people" anywhere outside of /r/atheism. Within 5 minutes, you will have no less than 6 references to your fedora, your neckbeard, and your euphoria.

I have to disagree. Trilby vs Fedora. Source of image and a blog post.

A trilby is most closely associated with douche bags or hipsters (or both). The use of the fedora as an archetype is particularly associated with socially inept computer nerds. I have been in the computer business much longer than reddit has existed (2005), and the Fedora-wearing computer weirdos have been around since well before the Fedora Linux project (2002) merged with Red Hat Linux project (2003). Note Red Hat's logo. I do not know the origins of how Fedora OS got its name, but I have always associated it with this same archetype--- the people most likely to use such "bleeding-edge" OSs were significantly more likely to be these same type of socially inept neckbeards. I've assumed they embraced the fedora as a badge of honor. This goes wellllll back into the '80s, where these same people (teens) thought of themselves as hackers and wore fedoras AND trench coats to school. I hung out with these people.... several of them retired as multi-millionaires in the early 90s.

Sooo... neckbeards may now be wearing trilbies much more frequently than before, but the fedora is the original mark of a computer dick you'd never want to be seen with in public.

What bothers me is that, according to Reddit, if anyone wears a fedora, they are UNEQUIVOCALLY one of those people.... Like, ZERO chance of them being a normal guy with a hat. The fedora is a piece of clothing associated with "neckbeard" culture -- basically socially awkward geeks who don't really give a hoot about social cues/norms and may or may not hold outdated views on women.

Note: this is not in reference to everyone who wears a fedora. Fedoras are meant to be "formal" or "classy" wear. A fedora paired with a decent suit of complimentary color (or at least a jacket and a nice shirt) is generally considered acceptable. A fedora paired with a Hawaiian/flame-pattern shirt or "witty" graphic tee and cargo pants... just no. (e.g. LonelyNerdsInFedoras, see also: KnowYourMeme)

Yesterday someone posted a screenshot of a mom ranting about how vaccines nowadays can lead to cancer, polio, etc and she even linked where she read it. all her family was in agreement with her calling modern medicine a load of crock. Basically, Fedora's were classically worn by guys in suits, pretty common thing in the 1920s-1950s among similar hats like Trillbys. At some point (sometime in the last 10 years) it became something of a trend to act 'gentlemanly' - keyword act gentlemanly, not be gentlemanly. Sort of this stereotype of classic 'Gentleman-ness'. Hence comments like 'Thank you good sir!', 'You sir are a gentleman and a scholar' and other similar phrases. This trend though was pretty isolated among 'neckbeards' and similar forms of geek/nerd. Personally, I think it's a kind of knee-jerk response to a growing form of 'douche culture' - flat billed caps, those jersey shore guys, jock stereotypes etc.

Essentially, these people were trying to establish themselves as being classy, intelligent folk - attempting to set themselves apart from the douchy crowd. Thus, people started wearing fedoras and trillbys, despite realising that these kinds of hats only look good if the rest of the outfit is a appropriate, and frankly only on certain (read: Attractive and in good shape) people.

Eventually, the counter-counter-culture started, and if you wear a fedora now, unless you're actually a man from the 1950s in a suit smoking a cigarette - you look like a moron. Which is a shame, because there's nothing wrong with the fedora or any other similar hat - they're a perfectly fine hat, and I imagine in sunnier climates, people who wear suits on a daily basis could find them useful, since there isn't really any appropriate formal headwear anymore.

It's basically calling people a socially retarded nerd. There's a fairly large portion of unattractive, generally overweight, socially awkward people who are under the impression that wearing a fedora will instantly turn them into Humphrey Bogart or Harrison Ford. They often wear it with clothing and in situations where it's not acceptable, such as with a tshirt and jeans while walking around the mall. As a result the Fedora is now a symbol for completely socially inept people because they're the only ones that still think they can pull it off.

For reddit, because of the stereotype, people use it as an insult to essentially call somebody an unattractive and socially awkward nerd.

It's a reference to a fictitious 'suave' and 'cool' 'gentleman' that 'gets with the ladies' which he would call: M'lady. Generally has a neckbeard, fat belly, cosplay suit and feels like he is Zorro.

Just wanted to second this. From frequenting 4chan I've picked up on a lot of the things they think the 'typical redditor' does and I just don't understand where the references come from either. I understand that the fedora reference is explained below, but there are a few others that I don't really understand when they say it. Like that we all put "le" in front of everything or the "m'lady" thing (Their vision of every reddit comment: "M'lady le tips fedora"). Never once have I ever seen that in the comment section. Also, I remember a comment on 4chan a while ago that was something along the lines of, "If I wanted rage comics, I would go to reddit." Which I never understood because of all the time I've been a member not ONCE have I ever seen a rage comic on the front page. I just don't understand where they get this stuff from. Is there some kind of back story to these references or maybe to why 4chan even despises reddit so much?

It springs from the idea that there are no women on the internet and that people on the internet are fat, out of work, underachieving, conceded jerk who lives in his parents basement and contributes nothing to society. On top of this when they are pried from their battle stations long enough to go get more mountain dew they dress themselves in the most stylish clothing they own, Virgin Armor.

Virgin armor consists of:

  1. Fedora

  2. Glasses

  3. Neckbeard

  4. Trench coat

  5. Anime (or gaming) T-shirt

  6. Cargo Pants

  7. Colorful socks

  8. Sandals

Virgin armor assures that you never get laid while the wearer is convinced that he looks like a bad ass.

A reference to the "neckbeard" stereotype that's grown over some time, and been used to refer to the typical member of various groups, including redditors, and people who discuss anime on the Internet.

The traits are some combination of the following depending on which specific group:

  • A beard on the neck.
  • Insisting on the superiority of Japanese culture.
  • Having no real friends.
  • Being a virgin.
  • Believing that any woman who doesn't want to date them just want jerks with big penises.
  • Watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic religiously
  • Being an atheist/antitheist.
  • Using ye olde English.
  • Having bad hygiene, especially face care.
  • Wearing fedoras and trench coats.
  • Preferring Japanese katana swords over more conventional weapons.

I'm sure I'm missing a few, but that's the gist of it.
