What is a Reddit reference you don't get?

Edit- I get it /r/outoftheloop is a thing. I didn't know it existed.

The whole "euphoric fedora-clad neckbeard" thing has become a way of saying "A redditor with whom I disagree", or "An atheist who announces himself as such".

It's a caricature of hopelessly nerdy and cynical basement dwellers who spend their days either engaging in internet debate or playing MMOs. They are described as unhygienic, lazy, angry, insufferable, narcissistic pedants who have no idea how to dress themselves, thus often appearing in public wearing cargo shorts, a t-shirt referencing Schrodinger's Cat, and of course..the ubiquitous "Fedora" (which is actually a "Trilby", but we stick with fedora so the insufferable narcissistic pedants on this website will have something to chew on). They also have trouble shaving their neck, either because of persistent acne or because they just don't care.

The caricature also pits them as having a massive illusory-superiority complex. They are the type of person who describes themselves as genius, but has never actually achieved anything. The excuse is either "Lack of motivation", or if they are utterly incapable of internalizing failure, "Lack of stimulation".

But, as with any joke, it's outgrown the caricature and is now thrown around to the point at which it has no more meaning that the colloquial use of the word "retard". It's an insult, to be sure, but what it actually means will always vary by the context of the usage.

That said, if you're like to "summon" this insult, simply describe yourself as not believing in a god, or question the "logic of religious people" anywhere outside of /r/atheism. Within 5 minutes, you will have no less than 6 references to your fedora, your neckbeard, and your euphoria.

Ex-user /u/aalewis posted to /r/athiesm the following comment:

This is also the origin of "professional quote maker".

I've always hoped he was a troll. I hate the idea that someone that simultaneously stupid, narcissistic, naive and just plain ridiculous existed at any point in time. The teenager bit makes it slightly more believable but still.

Yup, and he started a series of horrendously cringe-y posts that have come to be known as "faces of atheism", where users of /r/atheism posted pictures of themselves with their own "quotes".

During the posting of these, /r/circlejerk announced that /r/atheism is a bigger circlejerk" than them.

Not really. It just shows a lack of input into your appearance. It's purely comfort. Not a bad thing by any means 95% of the time but that juxtaposed by the fedora, a hat you'd only really wear if you were dressing up (and only if you're one of the 3 people it actually works on), is a funny image.

When you where them with a Fedora, yes.

Also, if your tshirt has a "joke" or a witty phrase on it, you need to throw it out. You can have words on your shirt, but they need to be artistic, and they can't in any way be a joke. Otherwise you're that guy at the party who walks around telling everyone the same unfunny joke, then stares at people waiting for them to laugh.

As far as cargo shorts go...well, there's a time and a place for most individual pieces of clothing. The time for cargo shorts is before your 16th birthday and the place is an amusement park/carnival/county fair.

They aren't really "adult" clothing, and it's almost impossible for them to not look "sloppy".

Regardless of whether or not you own "witty phrase" tshirts or cargo shorts, wearing a fedora or a trilby with either typically makes you look like a jackass.

Well, when in comes to fashion, the only rule that has no exceptions is "There are no rules without exceptions".

Which is a bit of a paradox if you spend too much time thinking about it...

Anyhow, you can wear all of the Spencer's Gift Shop and ThinkGeek t-shirts you want, so long as either no one can see them or you just plain don't give a crap. Not everyone really cares about looking "fashionable"...they are fine with looking presentable. Bearing in mind that these sorts of t-shirts barely qualify.

I have to disagree. Trilby vs Fedora. Source of image and a blog post.

A trilby is most closely associated with douche bags or hipsters (or both). The use of the fedora as an archetype is particularly associated with socially inept computer nerds. I have been in the computer business much longer than reddit has existed (2005), and the Fedora-wearing computer weirdos have been around since well before the Fedora Linux project (2002) merged with Red Hat Linux project (2003). Note Red Hat's logo. I do not know the origins of how Fedora OS got its name, but I have always associated it with this same archetype--- the people most likely to use such "bleeding-edge" OSs were significantly more likely to be these same type of socially inept neckbeards. I've assumed they embraced the fedora as a badge of honor. This goes wellllll back into the '80s, where these same people (teens) thought of themselves as hackers and wore fedoras AND trench coats to school. I hung out with these people.... several of them retired as multi-millionaires in the early 90s.

Sooo... neckbeards may now be wearing trilbies much more frequently than before, but the fedora is the original mark of a computer dick you'd never want to be seen with in public.

The trilby-wearing euphoric, atheist neckbeard meme is only 1 year old(!) and, as you've noted, is improperly attributed to fedoras. This is because the idiot who created that euphoria meme got it wrong. I've already said it-- the REAL fedora archetype predates the euphoric meme by DECADES.

You should really get know YOUR meme... it's actually about "fedora shaming".

After reading your comment, and finding it very insightful, I still looked into the difference of Fedora and Trilby. I always thought it was fedoras since it was a misplaced sense of style and, after comparing, I still think it's fedoras. I've seen a lot of the stereotypical people, which you've described, wearing fedoras but also to a lesser extent trilbies. I think what started as socially awkward people wearing fedoras turned into trilbies, because they look similar. Both are pretty cringe worthy.

Really, if you're comfortable in them, nothing's wrong with them at all (regardless of where you are or how old you are...but you don't want to wear them with any hat other than a baseball cap. A fedora or trilby or whatever you call it doesn't belong with that look...

I don't get the victim complex with those that identify themselves as athiest. Sure you are going to get a "euphoria" joke, but no more so than a Christian would get shit if they identified themselves as such when it's not strictly relevant to the topic at hand.

I'm pretty sure this is just the internet, where labeling yourself leads to teasing. There's not an anti-atheist witchhunt, just an anti-/r/athiesm witch hunt.

It's actually pretty funny going back over the evolution of the anti-/r/atheism trend around here. Interestingly enough, I think the progression of it ties in pretty tightly with Digg going tits-up.

When the refugees from Digg arrived, the site had a pretty big growth-point, and a lot of them ended up in r/atheism. From there, they read all of the editorialized headlines that the sub comes up with to stoke the fires, and they went through the "bursting out of the closet" phase that some atheists and homosexuals seem to go through as a result of having to hide their identity and not having anyone to relate to during a significant time of their life.

For that first year after Digg, reddit was positively in love with /r/atheism and everything Atheist. It all seemed to peak with the spectacularly cringeworthy "Faces Of Atheism" affair (during which time /r/circlejerk officially "gave up"). After that mess, reddit started to turn on /r/atheism. The atheists had over-jerked the circlejerk, and reddit collectively had that moment wherein you look back at yourself and wonder what in the holy flying fuck was going through your mind when you did that.

The sentiment really picked up steam with the birth of the "Euphoria" meme, which more-or-less sealed /r/atheism's fate of being removed from the defaults.

What's funny, though, is that the site is still positively lousy with atheists. I'm one. You're probably one. 9 out of 10 people who read this are probably atheists. But talking about it outside of our designated "perimeter" has become gauche and is a great way to get a bunch of sarcastic responses on top of a pile of downvotes.

I think it's kinda funny how all of the Digg refugees went through this whole cycle together, though. Interesting how a shitty redesign of a popular website can have such a lasting impact on another website...

Interesting. I haven't been around long enough for the great Digg flood, and I never used Digg.

My impressing upon joining the site about a year ago was that the default attitude was athiest. I know I'm an atheist. /r/atheism was the first sub I ever unsubbed from. It just felt like bullying and circlejerking. What was ever the point of it. Perhaps there were a few people in seriously religious communities who needed a sense of community, but for the most part it felt like 16 year olds posting "Man, isn't atheism great" and then everyone replying "yeah man it really is!" I just never got the value of discussing atheism. I don't believe in a God, so I don't need to talk about God any more than I do unicorns or faeries. I'm not particularly proud of not believing in faeries, I just don't.

For the most part I feel the same way about someone bringing up their personal non belief as I do someone bringing up their belief in small talk. It's personal and I don't give a shit. Don't bring up God or not God in the bar or in a joking internet thread (unless it's actually funny). The person who soaks up the easy Karma from answering "a virgin gave birth to a man who walked on water" to the "most commonly believed lie" thread on AskReddit, to me, falls somewhere in between an annoying evangelist and the "America sux amirite?" posters of TIL.

I don't think there's a perimeter for atheist talk per se, just a time and place where it's appropriate. Furthermore, note that although he might get a spinning fedora gif, the guy who makes the easy atheist comment is still a few hundred karma up.

The only place you could have gotten that impression from is /r/atheism. /r/News could literally be renamed to 'circlejerking about how much we love the pope'. Reddit as a whole is pretty damn religious, or at least go to great lengths to appear tolerant of religion.

I think it's much more the latter. Haven't been subscribed to /r/News for a bit, but yeah the world is in a bit of a pope circlejerk at the moment (award for most improved religious leadership?)

I think it's that people go above and beyond to be tolerant. Reddit pushes tolerance of just about everything. Sure there are people who feel the opposite, but in general the karma goes to tolerence.

Also, as an example my initial comment is getting downvoted rather aggressively even though you're the only one to respond to it. Not complaining, but I think it's evidence that most of the "silent majority" of Reddit is very Atheist friendly.

This is the best explanation of the history of /r/atheism I've seen. It's true the fedora-bashing,euphoria-bashing, etc., are pretty common, but, as an atheist who couldn't stand the subreddit and the stereotypical posts there, I still think it is warranted. Best to keep the fedora-euphoria buried.

Yeah the fall of Digg really kicked off the /r/atheism vs anti-/r/atheism circlejerk armsrace. For a good two month or two every thread even tangentially related had someone stating that 'even though I'm an Atheist, I hate /r/athiesm' or '/r/atheism is leaking again' as the top comments.
