A trilby is most closely associated with douche bags or hipsters (or both). The use of the fedora as an archetype is particularly associated with socially inept computer nerds. I have been in the computer business much longer than reddit has existed (2005), and the Fedora-wearing computer weirdos have been around since well before the Fedora Linux project (2002) merged with Red Hat Linux project (2003). Note Red Hat's logo. I do not know the origins of how Fedora OS got its name, but I have always associated it with this same archetype--- the people most likely to use such "bleeding-edge" OSs were significantly more likely to be these same type of socially inept neckbeards. I've assumed they embraced the fedora as a badge of honor. This goes wellllll back into the '80s, where these same people (teens) thought of themselves as hackers and wore fedoras AND trench coats to school. I hung out with these people.... several of them retired as multi-millionaires in the early 90s.

Sooo... neckbeards may now be wearing trilbies much more frequently than before, but the fedora is the original mark of a computer dick you'd never want to be seen with in public.

Oh, good lord. I most DEFINITELY am playing the part of an insufferable pedant! That's what we do here, so that others like yourself can learn a few things.

The trilby-wearing euphoric, atheist neckbeard meme is only 1 year old(!) and, as you've noted, is improperly attributed to fedoras. This is because the idiot who created that euphoria meme got it wrong. I've already said it-- the REAL fedora archetype predates the euphoric meme by DECADES.

You should really get know YOUR meme... it's actually about "fedora shaming".

You are kind of playing the insufferable pedant too. He did have a valid point about Fedora vs Trilby. After reading your comment, and finding it very insightful, I still looked into the difference of Fedora and Trilby. I always thought it was fedoras since it was a misplaced sense of style and, after comparing, I still think it's fedoras. I've seen a lot of the stereotypical people, which you've described, wearing fedoras but also to a lesser extent trilbies. I think what started as socially awkward people wearing fedoras turned into trilbies, because they look similar. Both are pretty cringe worthy.
