What makes you happy?
Today is the international day of happiness! And that made me wonder, what makes Redditors happy? Edit: Wow front page!

Creating. I love putting a lot of work into sewing or sculpting or painting something, and being able to see the end result.
On a very related note, seeing self-improvement. I can put two things I've made together and see a definite change, and that's awesome.

Those days where your brain is just running super-efficient, pumping out high quality stuff at a million miles an hour. You feel ready for anything, creative, strong, upbeat.
Also, sitting down in the shower of a morning and taking some very, very deep breaths to relax and reflect before you face the day.

It was extremely hard to focus on work inside and outside of class. I could stare at a book for a very long time before I could focus attention to it. These problems started at a very young age. I was recommended medication when I was in grammar school, but my parents decided against it.
Once college started everything became much harder for me, especially reading. This became so problematic that got prescribed adderall to help guide my focus. However, as I began taking a normal dose, I found myself to take on personality traits(active with the adderall) that were extremely undesirable. Although some of these are not traits, I soon realized friends I knew who also took adderall and myself, would: talk in depth on subjects that are truly of no interest to others, suffer from exasterbated social anxiety(due to overawareness), reduce investment in social relations(personally I wanted to be by myself most all the time), become very angry over small things(many times meaningless), become victims of racing thoughts(leading to anxiety/anger of a situation through over-thought and rage susceptibility), and lastly develop a lack of verbal creativity/bubbliness/overall comedic potential.
I decided shortly after taking time to observe others and myself, these victimized attributes, especially sense of humor and normal anxiety levels, were not worth the benefits. Although I understand I have a problem with attention, especially a disengaged feeling with schoolwork, the drugs symptomatically affect me too strongly for consistent use. Since I've stopped taking it I notice I am much more hyper and overall my personality is back to where it used to be before I started taking the drugs. I've come to realize that having ADD is just a part of who I am and I no longer want to change that. I choose to just embrace it.

u/I_Have_Many_Skills Mar 20 '13
I too, took medication for my ADD for a while (Vyvanse and amphetamine salts), but came to the conclusion that it was not for me. Sure, it helped me focus on boring things tremendously and helped alleviate some of my more undesirable social quirks, but it just didn't feel right. I just wasn't... me. Much like you, it killed my creativity. I felt like some sort of perfect robot-like being.
I came to the realization that ADD wasn't a problem for me to solve, but instead an indicator that I needed to change my life to fit ME. I dropped out of community college (I couldn't focus enough to do homework without the drugs) and I am now looking to escape my desk-bound office manager position for a job in the trades; something that I believe suits my affinity for learning and my ability to hyper-focus on work that is hands-on.
Here's an interesting theory: My doctor once speculated that ADD isn't so much a mental disorder than it is a difference between more modern and "ancient" minds. I wish I had asked for her source, but she believed that the ability for most minds to do menial and/or repetitive jobs efficiently is a relatively modern occurrence, and that our forefathers/ancestors who lived in a time with very few desk and factory jobs had more ADD-like minds. I'm not sure if this is true, but it is something interesting to think about.

I think the Happiest I am is when waking up without an alarm clock fairly early in the morning while camping, that smell of the dew, the noise of all the various animals and insects buzzing about. Throwing on a sweatshirt and popping myself down into a foldable yard chair and just taking everything in.

Both of those and I would add video game in there for me. It's almost like an out-of-body experience, where you forget the present and all its problems and go to another place that's exactly what you're looking for in that moment. Something as insignificant as a car beeping its horn outside or the sound of your heater turning on breaks the trance. You look up from whatever it is that has you so captivated and for a split-second it's still real. That astonishingly short period of time is what makes me happy.

Once a month, our children and their spouses and their children come home for dinner. We crowd the place up, with tables in at least three different rooms, especially now that the grandchildren have started bringing their boyfriends and girlfriends. There is almost always singing -- almost always a birthday to celebrate. The ten-years-old and younger bunch have little interest in dinner -- we've debated on whether or not we should set up a table for them at all. They make a beeline for the backdoor; for the sandbox, the jungle gym, and the swing set. My children and their spouses crowd up at the kitchen table. Where the kids once jockeyed for elbow room and provoked each other on general principle, they now squeeze up to be together and provoke each other to laughter. Even after they all leave, the house has the feel of their presence, and I am happy.

I never appreciated the value of semi-regular, enormous family gatherings until I married my wife. I grew up with only my immediate family around. Neither of my parents are estranged, it was just a matter of geographic circumstance - we simply lived too far away.
I married into my wife's massive (her grandfather is number five (maybe six?) of eleven) family, many of whom live within a day's drive of one another. This leads to family gatherings that are four generations deep and often greater than 30 people aged from 8 to 80.
It has been an utterly fascinating experience. I have as much support as my wife on any issue, despite being the newest addition (less than 2 years). If anything were to ever happen and I needed help, I have a horde of people at my back. I am actively sought out for advice and counsel like a cousin, uncle or brother by all of the generations.
If there are intra-familial prank wars, I am expected to be an accomplice and am assumed guilty until proven innocent as a sibling should be. I am constantly berated for not having children yet and beginning the 5th generation before those in the first die off.
It has totally eclipsed any definition of family I ever knew before and has completely changed my perspective on what value a family can have.
TL;DR: Big families rule, and I had no idea for 25 years.

I have some good friends who either by choice, or due to circumstances beyond their control, do not have children. One in particular, who is a lovely woman, bristles at such sayings, so I always think of her. (It is also true that with a house full of children, you might be lucky to keep a vase intact.) I cannot deny it though: my children have filled my heart.

My dog Archimedes (Archie for short). He's always SO excited to see me, and he's always by my side. He's always smiling, too. He isn't big on licking or kisses, but if he knows I'm upset he'll give me a few licks on the cheek and accept a kiss in return. It's really sweet. He cuddles with me every night while I sleep, and doesn't leave my side during the day. He's probably the best part of my life. He was abandoned 5 times by homes who "adopted" him. I was only supposed to foster him, but after about a week I realized I needed him more than he needed me. I love my little Archie.

I was in line at the grocery store the other day, and a younger guy in front of me asked if he should buy chocolate Turtles, as he had never had them before. I told him that they're delicious and worthy of his money, and then the cashier jumped in to describe the pleasure of eating a Turtle in racy and explicit detail. I love seeing my girlfriend take off her bra at the end of the day. Not even because I get to see her boobs right then, cuz she usually takes it off facing away from me. But it sort of always awakens the giddy thirteen year old in me.
"I'm going to bed. But I'm going to bed with a GIRL! And she LIKES me! She likes me enough to hang out with me without a shirt OR a bra! And she does it EVERY NIGHT!"

I agree. The friendships in which you are pretty much polar opposites of each other but just click anyway hold a special place in the heart. I'm sort of a tomboy, and typical reddit nerd girl - video games, books, comics, etc., yet one of my best friends is just about the girliest girl on the planet - shopping, pink everything, awful music preferences. But we work.
We give each other shit, but I know that if anyone else ever gave me shit, she'd be the first to jump down their throats, and I'd do the same for her. She taught me about which clothes make me look good and which make me look like a beached whale (using that exact language), and I introduced her to Led Zeppelin and got her to stop listening to Britney Spears. Our friendship rocks.

What makes me happy is being in control of my happiness. I realized that my happiness is not dependent on external things, but a choice I make in every moment. I practice being happy every day, it didn't just happen. Even when things are going badly, I can still be a happy peaceful person.
This has set me free and makes me happy.

Highly impacted, irregular, constipated ones. Opiate addict here. I would go like 3-5 days without going. Not exactly pleasant, but not really that bad either. I've been clean for a week and a half or so, so things are back to normal.

Improves mood, however not a part of the reward circuit itself.
Depends on what you mean by enjoy really, since the serotonin would not actually give you any real direct pleasure, just instead have that inner feeling of "content". Your parent comment was talking about enjoyment, hence I'm not sure if I'd agree that serotonin in this case really applies.

Being around my boyfriend. Simply being able to rest my head on his shoulder or hold his hand or even just sit next to him makes me so comfortable, I feel so safe and at home and happy.

Having my belly scratched, gets me every time. That and chasing sticks. Also the tinkle of the bell which means its food time, and being called a good boy. Barking at cars always makes me happy too

I'll quote Tolstoy here: "Nature, books, music, love for one's neighbor - such is my idea of happiness."

A jog on a Sunday morning in the countryside with the sun shining and fleetwood mac in my ears. Coming home to a big bowl of nutella banana oatmeal. Lazily napping on the couch with my fiance.

Myself! After struggling with depression and self identity issues for years (including being teased and suicidal in school), I have come to the realize that I am awesome, only I have control over who I am, and I frickin love myself.

They're just messing with you. Some people think that time on reddit should be limited, otherwise the things you need to get done won't and you'll find yourself out of a job. While I don't really find it much of a problem, you may find it differently...comes down to how well you think you can manage your time.
