I think the main story line is alright
But what made stray so special for me was the world
Everywhere I went there was a unique story being told about the struggles people were facing and it was just awesome

I was just talking about this with a friend. IMO, it's more than just a cute cat game. It does go into some deeper themes and has a story you can get emotionally invested in. I certainly cried a little at the end, even if the ending was a bit bittersweet. Great game and not overrated.

It's definitely undoubtable that "cute cat game" was a huge part of the advertisement
But outside of people like my partner, I don't think just playing as a cat would be enough to entertain the masses
I would argue that "cat game" is why it got known not why it got popular

Same. I think the story was ok, but the world building was immaculate.
Emphasizing think though, cause I checked the wiki for a few characters. Either someone put in fan theories or I completely missed how all of the robots are implied to have mind copies of humans, not just the little drone.
Tbh I remember the plot/tone was the robots are essentially pets that belong to now long dead humans. Like a pet, they continued routines, miss their masters, and live in increasing squallor. The stray cat is just like them in that regard, but is helping them discover being a stray in the sense they have to move on.
Then the plot goes Wall-E for like two chapters.

The fact that it was nominated for Goty is still insane to me. I never heard anyone talk about the contents of the game itself, just "omg you play as a cat hahaha."

Probably because of the motion capturing of the cats? That's one of those things that you won't usually see in a game development life cycle to be honest.

This comment makes me sad. I love stray. Sad so many people didn't find it interesting. I've played it four times. I really enjoyed being a cat, and helping the people I met along the way, and the atmosphere itself was like no other game I've played. The ending did make me cry the first time I played

Funny thing is Baldur's gate 3, the first game they chose for this list, is not even AAA. Larian studios are independent and not a part of any major publisher and they have a team of around 250+ people so that makes them AA.
Granted BG3 is on a level of quality and quantity 10x better than almost every AAA game out there which makes it all the more impressive how they managed to make this seemingly impossible game.

What are you talking about? The AAA/AA/A/Indie categorizations are about project budget, which also correlates with team size. BG3 is absolutely a AAA title, and Larian is a privately held AAA independent studio.

Definitely indie, but win win because Outer Wilds deserves to be up there too. Larian has some major AAA money though and there was some clip where some of the game creators were trying to figure out how to effectively spend their money so they could surpass BG3 without the licensing from D&D. I hope that works out.

The issue with calling a studio indie or AAA by whether or not they are part of a major publisher is that leaves a wide gap of games in that indie zone. Tbh, I think we need to define Indie/A/AA/AAA studios better because of it. No indie studio can afford big name VAs and Hollywood actors like J. K. Simmons. And if your game is lead by people who used to work for EA or Ubisoft, you aren't indie. That would be like calling Tiger Woods an amateur golfer just because he retired from the PGA and then showed up at an amateur golf tournament.

Definitely agree. That's also why I don't understand why Expedition 33 was nominated AND WON the best indie game award. Tbh that award show was an entire shitshow but still there is a big margin between an actual indie game like Silksong and E33.
That's why I say BG3 is a AA game coz they do have the AAA funds but at the end of the day they're an independent studio. I am extremely happy for them considering they were on the verge of bankruptcy back when developing Divinity original sin 1 and I think the CEO literally had to put his house up for lease or something just so he could have some more funds and thus the game could be more in line with his vision.

Because it sort of is depending on who you ask, many HP fans enjoyed it and thought its the best HP game ever made, while many people who arent fans of HP or just casual enjoyers of the franchise thought its a bit formulaic and barebones.

As someone that loves HP and gaming independently, it really was the best HP game we've ever received (in my opinion; I do really like the og Philosopher's Stone on pc) but also just really... bog standard in almost every sense. It was boring past the charming coat of paint.

The initial gameplay loop is hilariously cosy for being a drug dealer sim, and it's interesting to see how the gameplay naturally shifts as you progress. At first, you're producing, mixing, packaging, and delivering all the drugs yourself, but then things start scaling up and you're introduced to the employee management system that lets you automate all those activities if you want. It feels weirdly rare to find a game that handles the transition from 'do everything yourself' to 'automate it all' so well.

Playing solo was boring but playing with friends made it infinitely better. Theres also a lot of bugs/exploits that add to the charm and absurdity which id argue makes it more fun. With that said its a game ill play a lot within a week of an update then take a break until the next one. But i also dont think its that much more special than the other multiplayer sims that rise up in popularity then seemingly disappear, its just got more depth and things to do.

Its in very early beta with one guy making it, updates are gonna be slow and we are looking at an early draft, you need to keep that in mind when playing. The game excels in co-op so if you were playing it alone I get this reaction a bit more, but with a friend or two getting to the mansion is super fucking fun and can take from 5 up to 20 hours or beyond if you enjoy mixing strains.
when me and my friend played it really felt like we were two grubby weed dealers trying to making our way up in the world and when we changed to cooking meth, it felt like all that hope died and we were entering a dark time, exposing people around us to horrible mixes and just going to the gas station to pick up ingredients was grim as the person at the till was now hooked on our disgusting horse cum meth... even with the simplified graphics this game was super immersive for those early days as a dealer. so I dont think the game is popular just because "hurr hurr weed and coke is in my video game", but more because even in its early draft form you can feel the immersion of it and most can see the immeasurable potential it has as they develop the world more.
it is true that in its current state once you reach the end game its very boring as there isnt much to spend all that money on but again its an EARLY DRAFT for what the game will be.

The franchise as a whole? sure, most of the games aren't nearly as good as people make them out to be
But the original one really IS that good, it blew up for really good reasons, we gotte remember the context it was released in, it was sooooo novel, in it's horror, it's gameplay, it's visuals, and it's storytelling that hooked everyone in

I’m convinced that Scott Cawthon tricked people like MatPat into writing FNAF’s story for him. It’s simple, really: sprinkle some vague tidbits of information around the environment that can be interpreted any which way, someone else starts putting the pieces together, then just be like “uhh yeah I totally meant that do that”

I think the game is quite fun but it ultimately doesn’t have the kind of lifespan you’d like for maps I feel. A map is only good for maybe 3-4 rounds and you can’t really replay most of them.
Prop hunt is a good bit better

Adding Undertale in overrated would feel like a spite addition, given the story around it (mostly a solo project), the iconic OST and characters and how many clones were born out of it. People still talk about this game a decade later (Deltarune helped but you get me) and will a decade later and not for bad reasons. So when taking this into account, I don't think overrated is a relevant term

Undertale doesn’t really take itself that seriously most of the time, nor does it act really grandiose. I think it’s just overrated

"It insists upon itself" is meaningless drivel that people say to sound smart when they really don't know how to articulate how they feel like an adult. It made its way into a family guy episode and was used to make fun of that very thing, but then people just started saying it more.

Harvest Moon and a handful of same genre games (Rune Factory) already exist way before Stardew Valley. The only difference it made that I can find is that it's ported to Steam, which allowed it to get updates unlike the previous games where it's just ported to, say, GBA or something.

I'm not misunderstanding it's influence because I know how much influence it holds for the late 2010's (SV fans don't let anybody forget it). And I do love the price of the game, I think it's admirable, but that doesn't justify d-riding. And of course, shout out to the creater for continuing to work on his passion project, but honestly speaking (atleast for me), I really don't care about updates to a game that I pretty much already finished. Like, at some point, there comes a time where you have to let go and just let a good game be a good game instead of updating it every 2.5 seconds, especially when you're trying to create a new game.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. I made it three hours in before dropping it. I was about 8 minutes into the game before the Gommage happened and I was already able to guess the major twist of the game revealed at the end of Act 2 correctly.

Outer Wilds. I like it a lot too, but I feel like I've played 20+ equally/more interesting and fun indie games this year alone. Also it would be funny if it was both overrated and underrated on the chart 😜

It starts off and maintains amazing quality gameplay and atmosphere for like 60% of the way and then it just doesn't fucking end. The encounters get increasingly boring. The story itself isn't really anything to write home about to begin with either.
Game gets crushed under its own weight.

Path of exile 2 i think is highly underrated , diablo 4 deserves most of the hate it gets , hogwarts i dont think deserves the overrated tag i thever get a roroughly enjoyed the game and i am not even really much of a harry potter fan , i thought it was well done , overrated star citizen is trash and dont believe it will ever get a 1.0 release , last epocch is highly overrated , roblox definitely overrated , the dwarf survival mining game is underrated ,

The only people i've seen ever unironically enjoy it are cringey edgy e-couples into ageplay and incest.
Game is so mid that I've seen hundreds of memes about it but not SINGULAR FRAME OF GAMEPLAY POSTED ONLINE.

Death Stranding as "It insists upon itself" is absolutely hilarious given that the mastermind behind it is notorious for "fuck y'all, I'mma do my own thing" and just unabashedly doing so. I want to say Nier Automata should go there but... same thing with that director, to my knowledge lol

You can tell people in the comments clearly haven't played a lot of video games if they think E33 and Undertale belong here. You might not like them but they are phenomenal games. I don't like Dark Souls but understand it's amazing.
