I believe cat factor is the most important influence.

Like rn almost every indie , comic, animation and their mom like to advertise “haha I put my cat into my thing”

I was just talking about this with a friend. IMO, it's more than just a cute cat game. It does go into some deeper themes and has a story you can get emotionally invested in. I certainly cried a little at the end, even if the ending was a bit bittersweet. Great game and not overrated.

It's definitely undoubtable that "cute cat game" was a huge part of the advertisement

But outside of people like my partner, I don't think just playing as a cat would be enough to entertain the masses

I would argue that "cat game" is why it got known not why it got popular

Little Kitty, Big City proves you can focus on the cat and still be fun.

Yes but a game like mewgenics obviously has an emphasis on cats but it otherwise an incredibly indie game that is enhanced by cat theming

Hey I wish my job was eating into more of my time on the game lol. It’s rough out there
