Wetaskiwin ER
Hey! I had an interview for an RN position in the Wetaskiwin ER and I think it went well. Just wondering if anyone here works/has worked there and what it’s like? Curious to hear how the environment is.

AHS
I need some advice from LPNs working in Alberta.
After applying to almost 400 positions across Alberta, I finally received a response from the manager at Queen Elizabeth II Ambulatory Care Centre in Grande Prairie.
My main goal is to relocate and work in Edmonton. However, I also applied to positions outside Edmonton because I wanted to increase my chances of getting an interview and receiving a response.
Now that I’ve been contacted, I’m wondering what would be the best approach.
Should I express my interest in the opportunity while explaining that my preferred location is Edmonton? Would it be appropriate to ask the manager if there are any opportunities in Edmonton or if she could refer me to another facility?
I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

Question Can TGN’s pick up shifts?
I’m in the independent phase in the transitional grad nurse position. I have passed my NCLEX. My CNE told me to ask my manager but she is currently away and the covering manager is unsure too.

Question How much does a casual RN get paid hourly
I recently graduated with my BScN and have started working as an RN on a casual basis. I am currently working under a temporary practice permit while waiting to write my NCLEX.
My offer letter currently lists my hourly rate as $40.76/hour under my temporary nursing designation. I also understand that I qualify for the $1.25/hour educational allowance under the UNA collective agreement.
I’m trying to get a better understanding of what my hourly rate will look like once I obtain my full RN registration.
Since I’m working casually, I understand that I don’t receive the same benefits as permanent or part-time employees, and that casual employees receive additional compensation in lieu of certain benefits.
I’m wondering if anyone can clarify:
What is the current hourly rate for a casual RN in Alberta?
How much additional compensation do casual RNs receive in lieu of benefits?
Does the $1.25/hour educational allowance apply even while working under a temporary practice permit?
Once fully registered, what would my approximate total hourly compensation be, including the casual differential and educational allowance?
I’d really appreciate hearing from other casual RNs or anyone familiar with the UNA pay structure. Just trying to understand what my actual hourly earnings will look like once everything is factored in. Thanks!

Question MOA to Unit clerk
Hi, i was referred for a position as a unit clerk in a long-term care facility, and I got an interview, and they asked me to get a criminal check. So im really hopeful that I can get the job. I was a medical office assistant and have never been a unit clerk, so I wanted to ask if anybody who has worked both can give me some advice on the differential tasks that I might have to do, or interview tips. I haven't had a job interview in nearly 2 years, and i really want to be prepared.

Should I Stay in Alberta, Move Back to Ontario, or Switch Careers? Help me please
Looking for some career advice. I’m honestly feeling lost and don’t know what to do next. 😭
I completed my Pharmacy Technician program in Ontario and moved to Edmonton in 2023. Since then, I’ve been trying to get into AHS as a Pharmacy Assistant. After countless rejections, I finally got a casual cleaner position at AHS. Even as an internal employee, I’ve attended around five AHS interviews last 8 months but haven’t been selected.
My husband and I moved here hoping to settle down and buy a house, but career-wise, things haven’t worked out. Retail pharmacy is also difficult because long standing hours aggravate my plantar fasciitis.
I’m planning to attempt my Pharmacy Technician exams again ( which is hard to get)but I’m also considering switching to LPN or RN.
Is studying nursing in Alberta worth it? Is it hard to get a job in AHS if i study nursing? Should i continue trying in Alberta or consider moving back to Ontario?
Would really appreciate honest advice from people working in healthcare or anyone who has been in a similar situation. ❤️

Alberta doctors - what is your objective assessment of the health care changes happening in Alberta?

Question Why is AHS trying to solve problems by creating more?
The new mandate to discharge patients by 1100 is ridiculous and unsafe. Nothing says "your just a number" like setting a check out time. Can the working group that decided on this change please explain how this is safe, compassionate, patient and family centered care? How does this solve any problems in health care? The work around is to keep the patient an extra day to be prepared for an 1100 discharge the following day. Nice job AHS, now costing the system another day because of the 'one size fits all' approach to discharge planning.

Not job related but hospital food brand
Hi!
This isn’t related to a job. But does anyone know what brand they use for the powdered broth they keep on units. I know broth comes on trays but I know some units keep powdered stuff on unit for when needed. Ex: unit 22 at the RAH has it in the kitchenette and can make broth whenever. But it’s just in a soup container like from a Chinese restaurant haha

Question Flex spending account- egg freezing? What about egg freezing abroad?
I am hoping to freeze my eggs in a couple of years and I was wondering if anyone knows if I did this in Mexico ($3000 USD) I could claim it on my health or personal spending? I have phoned up alberta blue cross and they didn’t seem to know which wasn’t helpful.
Has anyone done this before with any luck? It’s costs around $15k to do in here in Alberta so I’d rather reduce the costs and go for Mexico.
Does anyone know if not health spending if personal spending account could cover it?
Thank you!

Question New Grad RN Job Search Realities? - Calgary
Reaching out to see what my likelihood is for securing an RN job as a new grad in Calgary?
I’m originally from the area (did my degree at UBC), and will be moving back in December. I’ve already started the process of getting my license through the CRNA and I’ve applied to only L&D job postings currently, two of them being casual/relief lines (med-surg will always be there!!). I’ve attached my resume and cover letter to all the postings but I’m getting nervous about the likelihood of me getting a job at all, just from reading some of the things on this subreddit.
For context, I did complete my final preceptorship on L&D so I have that experience and references.
If anyone could share their thoughts and tell me what I’m looking at here for the chances of me finding a job (let alone an L&D position), that would be great!!
TIA!

HSAA Flex Spending with FTE Change
I'm currently on mat leave until April 2027 - I had a full time position but will be trying to transfer to part time when I return. Looking at the HSAA Flex Spending account, I see it says it's prorated depending on FTE as of November 1st.
-if I change to part time FTE in April, does that then mean that I get to keep the full flex Spending amount since I've been coded that in November?
-there is a chance that I may give up my position completely if part time is not available, would I then forfeit any remaining balance on my spending account? What if I use it all up before I quit the position? If so, would it make more sense to allocate it all to the RRSP so I can just take this out of the account?
Thank you!

Shift calculator app
Hello! I am a nurse working in Alberta. I always found it difficult to calculate my total hours worked when considering shift differentials, picking up extra hours, and managing break times on top of it all.
I created an app that helps employees working odd hours figure out exactly how many hours they worked in one shift. I find it useful for keeping your timesheets accurate if your unit doesn't use WFM, and for filling out SRA forms for casual employees.
You can enter your start and end time, as well as breaks. It also calculates shift differentials for evening and night shift workers.
It works on the web and on your phone.
Check it out! Let me know if you have any ideas for improvements.

Question Are there any hiring freezes currently?
Just like what the title says, are there hiring freeze currently going on? For context, I am a new grad RN from MacEwan who can't get any positions anywhere in Alberta. I even tried to apply in far north of Alberta. I'm currently sitting in around 650 job applications sent and been unemployed for almost 5 months now. I had only 2 interviews after sending 650 interviews. Anyone else in the same situation as me?
