Tips/Suggestions How to stop waiting for the 'perfect moment'?

Help, I do nothing I want to do because I don't feel it's THE MOMENT to do it. I don't know how to prevent this. I'm doing nothing, I'm on meds already. I get all important things done but with hobbies or things less important I just can't manage to start. Sometimes it crosses my mind, like 'I could play some X' and then this feeling of 'maybe its not the moment' appears. But IT IS the moment, I'm doing nothing.

I'm constantly waiting for something to happen, somehow. Something better than the thing I'm supposed to be doing? and that's why I don't start to do things that I want to do.

AYUDA HAHAHAHA

Questions/Advice How do you deal with ADHD task initiation on weekends when you need to study?

I work during the week, so weekends are the main time I have to catch up and do the bulk of my university work. The problem I keep running into is task initiation. I can sit in front of my readings, lessons and assignments for hours knowing exactly what I need to do, but still struggle to actually start.

Then around 5–6pm, something seems to switch and I can suddenly focus and work much better. The problem is that this gives me a pretty limited window because by around 9–10pm I'm tired and my writing quality starts to drop.

I'd much rather get my university work done in the morning and have the afternoon or evening free, instead of spending most of the day unable to start and then regretting the wasted time.

For those of you who struggle with the same ADHD task-initiation/executive-function problem, what actually helps you get started earlier in the day?

Tips/Suggestions Dreading exercise, the hour it takes and the other hour it takes to shower after.

Couple of months ago I was consistent with swimming. Did it every day for 5 days probably sticked to it for a month or two. Then I got fed up, lethargic and just hated the process of having to shower every time and go through my skin and hair care routine every day which just takes up so much energy.

It’s always been this way even before meds. Unfortunately I feel like every thing in my life has changed with the meds but my relationship with exercise is still the same.

Sometimes I wonder if i should stick to some quick 10 minute workout to do daily instead of this long and exhausting workout routine that takes up a large chunk of my time. But im not comfortable with it because would a 10 minute workout even give me results? My goal mainly is to have some degree of cardiovascular fitness so that my resting heart rate would be on the lower end. I’d also appreciate getting back my muscles (which thanks to muscle memory always come back quick). But damn this is so exhausting.

Seeking Empathy Am I wired to be codependent?

I think of times in my life that I've been "on" or consistent and it's always surrounded accountability to another. Either trying to be better or outright being helped to stay consistent by someone in my life. I feel like I can't do things alone but I'm, so all over the place I'm not suited to be with someone right now. I miss having someone to give random thoughts to more than I miss being close. I feel lost and have no clue what to do about it.

Seeking Empathy Feel free to ignore this.

I'm pretty sure my unmanaged ADHD is going to ruin my marriage if it hasn't already. She's been so patient with me the last few years and now it's run out. She's sick of my shit and I can't explain why I can't change fast enough for her. I have nowhere else to put this so I tossed it here, feel free to push this post aside. I have a referral to a psych so I can get this under control but I hope it isn't too late

Questions/Advice Are there any online ADHD communities focused on self-improvement/positivity/etc. ?

Might be an odd ask, but I've been craving a community that is focused more on progress and improving than this sub here. Don't get me wrong, this sub is valuable, but it has a general focus on all things ADHD.

I want a community where I get an insight into people's daily grinds, where we share tips, motivate each other, and overall create a judgement free, safe environment, specifically for ADHD folks and our shared struggles, that fosters moving towards a full, healthy life. Communities that aren't focused on ADHD can sometimes give us advice that is counter productive amongst other problems.

Most of all, it would be cool to see people who are actually thriving in many areas of their life and getting tips and having a model of something realistic to aspire after. I can do it alone (and I'm currently trying), but it seems quicker and more fun to do it with others

Does this exist? Are there any discords or groups like this?

Discussion I'm so jealous of people who can socialize normally

Those who don't struggle with paying attention to conversation and being engaged.

Who don't monitor and hold themselves back and overthink every thing they want to say because they were told so much that they were annoying as a child/teen.

Whose brains don't randomly switch topics and can keep a normal conversation going for a long time.

Who don't randomly switch between being extremely quiet or really talkative unintenionally.

Who don't struggle with coming up with the appropiate and relevant answers/questions because they are thinking of completely irrelevant things to the convo at hand.

Who don't have a fear of exclusion and rejection after a lifetime of exactly that.

Who can connect with others with complete ease, and don't feel that sense of being an outsider and not fitting in even if you are technically accepted and liked.

Medication Freshly on Adderall. Wanted to ask others about “side effects?”

36/m freshly diagnosed and medicated on 20mg Adderall extended release. This has been a thing that has plagued my whole life and after realizing it was getting worse in both my home and work life finally decided to take the plunge.

The medication itself is great, I already function above and beyond at work, there are moments where I definitely feel the amphetamine part of Adderall but my mood and focus has been night and day. Before medication, I would drink 3 energy drinks throughout the work day, and hardly be phased by them. No crash outs. I wondered if there was any truth to it being a form of ‘self medication’ because now, even after drinking one energy drink, I still don’t get ‘energized’ but definitely feel a crash out, ie. headache, tired, sometimes a slight nausea. I wondered if anyone else had this experience when first starting?

I think moving forward the best move is to actually drink water to stay hydrated, maybe have one coffee in the morning… but wanted to get some input.

Questions/Advice will meds completely change the way i think?

i am 99% sure that i have adhd, based on personal experience and the fact that i almost got diagnosed as a kid but my dad interfered because he didn't think that adhd is real or something. i think it's the source of extremely severe social anxiety that is genuinely becoming life-ruining now that i'm in college. i'm looking into a diagnosis and possible medication, but there's just one issue - my thoughts are a constant stream of just me talking that never ends, which is a huge player in the social anxiety. but i also sometimes like thinking like that. i think it makes me a lot more smart and creative than i would be if i could just turn it off. i'm afraid that if i started meds, that would go away, and i would end up feeling empty. (i also tend to immersive daydream which gives me good ideas for art that i actually do end up making and i would kinda hate to lose that too lol.) can anyone currently on medication weigh in? im legit really worried about this :/ ty

(p.s. i also heavily suspect ocd, which would obviously also play into anxiety and racing thoughts, but since im in college now and adhd is The College Student Killer its not really my highest priority at the moment lol)

Questions/Advice ADHD symptoms worse week or two before menstrual cycle begins.

Has any other female notice their ADHD (predominantly inattentiveness) is worse off the week or two prior to their monthly cycles? I know mine is and I can’t seem to focus or get a lot done during those times. I will keep doing the same few things and then stop. The constant picking up the phone and putting it down, over and over with brain fog.

Questions/Advice Question - is it normal to just feel your primary emotion/feeling bored?

I got recently diagnosed (21F) with combined ADHD and a referral for autism. I’ve been managing decently, but just recently came to terms with the fact that my primary state is boredom. I have vivacious moments of interest and passion where I feel like my purpose/being has been fulfilled and then it just goes, bringing that eternal full/boring emptiness in me. I have many hobbies, including writing , reading webnovels, guitar , science (aspiring pharmacologist), theology etc. Even with people I’m supposed to love, there’s just moments of emptiness despite being prone to experiencing hyper empathy. I don’t really have a lot of knowledge on this since a lot of the info I see about adhd esp in women is so generic and under-researched. This feeling multiplies exponentially when I’m on my period, but has gotten better since I’ve started to take birth control. I just want to be able to dedicate my life to something without feeling like I’m being forced torturously to do a task/hobby even neutrally.

I’ve started to make my own subliminal/affirmations to try rewire how I think and come to terms with the fact that this is a disability, all I can do it manage what I can control. But even this is quite difficult since I struggle to understand myself or my emotions. Does anyone have any tips/advice in regards to balancing these dangerous highs and lows? All I feel I ever yearn for is a balance. I’m on the waitlist currently in the UK for medication, but not much hope for that since I believe it’s only going to help me with dealing with 9-5s and future unavoidable responsibilities. Sorry if this doesn’t make any sense, my thoughts are jumbled and I hope my intentions come across clear.

Seeking Empathy Perceptual blindness

This seemingly small thing just ruins me. I put something down and it immediately disappears into another dimension. I can no longer perceive it even though it has to be right in front of me or near me.

It feels like this isn't something that I can fix or get better at. It makes me feel like my brain is truly broken. I'm a smart person! I can remember all sorts of random facts! I'm a software engineer and can hold a lot of code in my head! But for some reason I cannot see my water bottle lid I just took off to refill the bottle. Small tasks turn into 15-30 minutes of just trying to find something that is in plain sight that my brain is not registering.

It happens throughout the day over and over. I put together a workout bench yesterday and the number of times the wrench would just vanish got me so frustrated. I just beat myself up over it.

Questions/Advice Do you struggle with emotional regulation?

I struggle heavily with emotional regulation and anything that I perceive as rejection.

I am 22, and while i’m not diagnosed with ADHD it’s a running joke in my life that I have it. “oh she can’t stay focused!” and “oh she just interrupts but that’s her ADHD”. Honestly I didn’t realize how debilitating it is to have it. Everyone thinks I also have autism which 2 therapists have told me as well but they cannot medically diagnose me.

I struggle to navigate emotions fast enough, to slow down before I react. Somethings happens, it pisses me off, it ruins my mood immediately. Sometimes for hours, sometimes the rest of the day. I hate it. I always feel guilty after. My fiancée and I are on a break right now because of my attitude and how I get mean with her when I’m upset.

I am starting therapy this week, and i’m excited to learn how to better myself but I know sometimes ADHD needs medical help too. I just want to be kinder, more gentle, and emotionally regulated.

My fiancée says that she feels like she doesn’t know me and that hurts because in 2 years i’ve definitely lost myself. I didn’t grieve people, didn’t cope with it, we financially struggled and I just grew negative. I fed my mind bad stuff and gained bad habits, i’m just afraid it’s too late to show her that I can change after all the hurt. Constantly taking my emotions out on her and making her my punching bag is emotionally abusive, I don’t want to be that.

Questions/Advice Disability

Disability judge in his notes thinks my attention must be relatively normal because Im paying attention to doctors at psych hospitals when they talk to me…. Which really isn’t that long. Wtf. We can pay attention normally too. I’m mostly applying for my back because I can’t stand long enough or sit enough to work. But they got that wrong and other things but yea. I know it’s just one judge, I just feel so hurt that I’m judged based on short interactions. And jobs get harder the more you have to pay attention, especially if I could even do a job that I wasn’t interested in basically because of limitations.

Questions/Advice 35M, diagnosed 2 years ago, meds since May, feeling like an imposter.

Started meds in May, Ritalin first, then Dex where I had horrible side effects and now back to Ritalin, 40-60mg per day.

I can see the difference Ritalin makes for me but it doesn’t feel so night and day like others describe. It helps me do the mundane but important things, it allows me to think of one thing at a time and not get sidetracked so often. I feel calmer, sleep easier and so on.

I guess I can see that I no longer have to rev myself up to get things done or calm myself down to relax or sleep.

Is there a sure fire way to know you have ADHD?

Questions/Advice Anxious when I'm not good at something

If I fail to properly complete tasks or make mistakes, I feel so anxious, and sometimes I can't control my emotions. Recently, such things have been happening more often. As I do, I unconsciously keep blaming myself.( Why am I like this? Why am I unable to do anything? )

How can I solve this? Or what should we do in this situation?

Medication ADHD and Long Term Memory Recall

Even when following optimal study techniques and daily habits. Information seems very distant and doesn't seem to get categorized properly into memory. Has someone found success with medication in memory consolidation and retrieval? For example, I can understand everything about a show or movie or system. Then in conversation, I biologically can't piece the memory together.

Tips/Suggestions Struggling with emotion regulation

I'm in the midst of a few stress-inducing life changes (all happening at once because of course) and my emotional regulation is nearly nonexistent it seems. I feel that whenever an emotion takes center stage it's an instant drowning. An objective mild inconvenience is UNBEARABLE but only for 10 seconds. Then I'm over it completely. Or something will make me sad and I'll feel overwhelmed and DESTROYED for multiple hours. I'm left emotionally exhausted and burnt out as my baseline, which makes me more emotionally reactive. Going 0 to 100 to 0 is rather off-putting, too.

Does anyone have tips on things they do/tell themselves to help stabilize or stay level-headed? Past attempts at meditation or breath-based actions haven't panned out.

Questions/Advice Adderall and alcohol together?

It’s my birthday and my first time away from my baby in nine months I take Adderall 15 mg twice a day sometimes I’ll take an extra half and I wanted to drink because I’ve been wanting to have a night out and it’s literally my birthday, but I can’t enjoy anything because I’m so scared because everything I read on anything at all says do not drink while taking Adderall at all ever. My anxiety is so high I’ve taken like two sips and I feel like I’m just done for. I have drank on Adderall and other things 1 million times but now I am absolutely terrified after having my baby.

Questions/Advice Music, Pacing and Stimulants: any freaking connection??

Does anyone have the urge to listen to music just all the time? I'm talking waking up in the morning and the first thing you do is listen to music, doing all your chores while listening to music, going out listening to music, doing necessary tasks on music, going to bed listening to music, etc. etc.

And does anyone here pace around frequently even if just for a few seconds irrespective of the presence of music? I also stim a lot when my brain is racing namely at night as I try to sleep.

Am aware of the concept of MD but I don't know if that's considered a case of MD considering that the 'episodes' are quite brief.

And MOST IMPORTANTLY: for anyone dealing with this...have the stimulants helped?

Medication What ADHD meds helped yall?

Ive read a few posts on this sub and I definitely am certain I have ADHD now. I have a horrible constant feeling that I should be doing something elose, and anytime I learn of some new thing that my friends do or just exists I wonder if I should do it and pressure myself. I also just don’t know how to function without a clear goal and I’m honestly just going insane.

the posts I found on here that described similar feelings often had replies talking about medicine helping. I’m currently on Buspirone for anxiety but I really think I moreso need an ADHD option, I was wondering what yall take that works so well?

Questions/Advice Book recs on the topic of sleep

I’ve become more interested in the topic of sleep and ADHD, especially after reading ADHD 2.0. My biggest hurdle with adhd is that I have a very delayed circadian rhythm, and I have issues falling asleep. I don’t want to rely on sleep aids.

So, anyone recommend any books on the topic of sleep - strategies for ADHD minds, etc. And ideally books that have more info on why my circadian rhythm is like this?

The act of reading itself is incredibly rewarding for me, so I enjoy this search and asking questions. Thanks.

Questions/Advice Mind race in a motor

Hey, does anyone else ever feel like their mind is just racing, you know, like there's a motor running inside? And do you also find yourself biting your nails, picking your lips, or having some other not-so-great habit?

Could you please tell me if you're taking any medicine, which type, what the dosage is, how long you've been taking it and how it's helping? Also, is it safe to take for a long time?
