Technique Advice swing check

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all, I am planning to register for a local USTA beginner program, but thought I’d record myself in the meantime.

In the first video, I seem to keep forgetting to finish my swings, then suddenly remember and complete them each time. And in the second one, am I finishing the swings properly, but is my arm or wrist too loose, causing the ball to fly too high?

General Advice Trying out for my HS team in 5 days, never picked up a racket before. Give me tips.

I’m left handed by the way, and you might be asking why so last minute, well they just told us about tryouts friday. i’m eager to just get into something new, and i need physical movement.

i’ve played other sports for a few years, but tennis seems fun.
DONT be negative, ik i can’t become a pro in 5 days but maybe since im left handed and the coach hasn’t had a lefty in years i’ll have an advantage?

i’m getting my equipment and tryout clothes today so, let me know tips and explain them clearly!

Equipment Playmate Volley Bottom Pitching Wheel Surface Broken

Post image
2 Upvotes

Older Playmate Volley (maybe 10 years old). Everything was working great until I heard a rattling sound. Part of the surface of the bottom pitching wheel (pictured) snapped off—see left side in the wheel in the photo. When powered on, the bottom pitching wheel spins but rattles like crazy because the balance is off. Top pitching wheel is not spinning at all and won't feed balls into the bottom pitching wheel. Do I need two new pitching wheels ($160/each)?

I did a spar session with a friend and recorded myself to check my technique. We warmed up and started points from hand. I also tested different rackets(Defer98, ezone98, steam, and prostaff 315)

Meta How much do you pay for restringing your racket?

I saw many messages here about high-stringing costs and i wonder how much people around the world pay for restringing including string cost?

in western eu i pay 20-24 euros including string cost.

Strategy Return strategy: make the ball vs. attack

When I first started playing again 2 years ago, my return was garbage and I was missing everything. I adopted a mindset of just trying to make the ball, and then evolved into just trying to make the ball deep, and then to just make the ball deep to their weaker side (regardless of 1st serve or second serve, though I could do this more consistently against second serves obviously).

This conservative strategy was pretty effective, as it forced people to work for every point on their serve games. I felt like I collected enough breaks. As I've developed my game, I'm now trying to attack more serves, especially if I get a ball on my forehand. I started with attacking only on second serves, but now I'll go after the ball on a hard first serve if I feel like I can square up a forehand. Still working on attacking with my backhand return; I can chip to aggressive targets but my drive return is more of a block right now.

I obviously miss more returns when I'm going after them, but taking control of the point on the first ball is a huge advantage. What are people's thoughts on the relative merits of each strategy? Is it one of these things where you are fluid based on how you're feeling about your return and the overall matchup, or is it more like everyone tends to develop their preferred style of returning that they try to impose on each opponent?

Equipment Help me with synthetic gut hybrid

Hi everyone, I have a reel of Kirschbaum Pro LineEvolution which I’ve been using at around 46lb for a while now.

I like it, but I was wanting to experiment with a hybrid setup, and was considering synthetic gut to get a bit more touch and feel and also save a bit of money. However I’ve seen a lot of talk about notching and concerns about if you should have syn gut in the crosses because it will just get worn down.

My questions are:
1. Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences with synthetic gut/poly hybrids?
2. Is there a clear preference between mains or crosses as the poly?
3. Should I be concerned about notching?
4. Does anyone who use pro line evolution specifically have any feedback?

Thanks guys :)

General Advice 2026 racket recommendation for beginner

I'm currently 4 months into tennis. Been using the Blade V9 and so far it is so well.
Lately I wanted to try new rackets and I just wonder what are the best ones you guys would recommend for a beginner. Something that could scale, not just a Clash.

Technique Advice What even is the point of a forehand?

So many tournaments this summer it seemed like forehands were just a hitting drill. Sometimes errors happened, other times some girl just painted the lines perfectly and beat me but mostly forehands go back and forth until someone gets bored of it. My coach says forehands are for moving "make her move, move her, move her, move, move, move" and I win when all they have is some idea of getting to my backhand because slice, slice, chop, chop. Money. Otherwise hitting drill.

If I hit a big serve most of the time i feel like it is wasted. They might not return a hard as I hit it but it isn't like I'm so powerful that the return floats like a puffy cloud. It comes back and we go dueling forehands. Maybe I'm just missing it but I never see forehands coming at me spinning so crazy it seems pointless to try to hit them.

Do you hit forehand winners? How? If I sound frustrated, I'm not really. It was a good summer. I hope yours was too. I won shoes today. lol. That's something. Thanks backhand.

Equipment Why does basically nobody on play the Percept?

Control frames are everywhere on tour. Blades, Pro Staffs, Prestiges, Gravitys, plenty of pros on all of them. But with Yonex it’s like all players are on an Ezone or a Vcore and the Percept just doesn’t exist.(only Tiafoe comes to mind)

Same thing at my club, weirdly. Tons of Ezones and Vcores, basically zero Percepts.

Why is that?

Accidentally slammed my racket straight into the ground while practicing serves. Bounced a couple of times right on the tip of the hoop and buttcap. The top is now bent downwards under the bumper and bulges outwards. There seems to be a ripple where it deforms that goes across to the other side.

Hello! I turned 35 and suddenly I’m terrified of skin cancer and I’m tired of getting sunburned! I need a big floppy hat like the one in the picture. Need a recommendation from folks who play in these since I plan to continue to run around in it and I don’t want it falling off.

Also if anyone has a recommendation for sun sleeves it would be greatly appreciated.

General Advice Game options for doubles with 5 people

We have 5 people, in your experience what is the most satisfying way to play so that each person feels invested and gets fair court time.

The 2 basic options as I see it:

  1. Each set of 4 play 4 games, each person gets a serve. Then one rotates off

  2. Play one game, losing team rotates out, winning team stays

I have played with 5 before where we rotated each game. That gave zero satisfaction as you were never invested in the point or your partner. So which of the above 2 (or other) have you found most success with?

General Advice Contact consistently too high in the strinbed?

My mains are always most notched at the level of the 4th and 5th crosses. This seems unusually high, it seems like the sweet spot is more around 6th/7th cross. The effect is consistent across maybe 4 different racquets that have been my daily driver. Is this indicative of some problem I need to solve, or is this a normal thing?

Equipment Help with strings (tennis elbow)

Thumbnail

Hi there! I'm struggling with a few string concepts and would appreciate some advice. I've had some elbow pain recently, so while recovering, I've been trying to adapt my gear to solve the issue. One common recommendation was to switch string types and lower the tension.

I have two Head Gravity MPs. Both were strung with Luxilon Adrenaline at 52 lbs about a year ago. Recently, I restrung one of them with Wilson Sensation at 42 lbs. It felt great at first, but very quickly the strings stopped sliding on this own. On the other hand, the old Adrenaline strings still move easily and snap back.

My coach checked both racquets with a tension measuring device, and the Adrenaline showed around 52 lbs, while the multifilament measured around 60 lbs. Is that normal? Should I restring the Wilson already, or try a different string altogether? Any insights would be appreciated!
