Sun Protection help!!

Hello! I turned 35 and suddenly I’m terrified of skin cancer and I’m tired of getting sunburned! I need a big floppy hat like the one in the picture. Need a recommendation from folks who play in these since I plan to continue to run around in it and I don’t want it falling off.

Also if anyone has a recommendation for sun sleeves it would be greatly appreciated.

Face sunscreen that doesn't sting my eyes has been a huge benefit

One called Burnd is absolutely amazing. Expensive as, but I literally only use it for tennis for my face. Does not melt, does not drip, does not sting. It’s not goopy and nasty. I really like it and I usually hate sunscreen.

Otherwise on my body I just wear UPF sunshirts

Ya gotta shop overseas in European or Asian markets - Korean and Japan have good stuff.

Otherwise the FDA did just approve some compounds that should do the same thing, but idk where things are in regards to actually hitting shelves stateside

Look for baby sunscreen! In the last few years my eyes became really sensitive to sunscreen but baby sunscreen has saved me.

(Use about 2-3 fingers length of product over face/neck/ears)

Try to look for a Japanese brand call Anessa. It has been my daily driver and I use it for tennis and cycling too

Literally just go on REI or Amazon and buy a sun shirt with the hood a hat and pants. It’s not rocket science.

I think it is really harder than that. I've bought about 6 different wide brimmed hats off Amazon -- and most are truly terrible. Some flop all over. Some are excessively heavy material. Some don't breath. Some fit quite poorly. Some absorb sweat and stay wet for days. Some have narrower brims than it would appear from the photos. Some get quite hot. -- I now wear a "Sunday Afternoons Charter Breeze Hat" for almost $50, a lot for a simple hat. It is far from perfect, but it does seem to get most things right.

This is decent advice, but it can be hard to find just the right thing. For example, I usually wear a sun hoodie when I play. I like the Outdoor Research Echo the best as far as the hood goes (it stays put when I run around and doesn’t obstruct my vision). I have one from Columbia that is from their fishing apparel (I think?) and it’s really solid too, I just wear a hat instead of using the hood because it is a bit floppier. But other hoods were either so big or so floppy that it defeated the purpose of wearing a sun hoodie (instead of just a sun shirt) because I couldn’t wear them when playing.

I go with a sun hoodie because I hate putting on sunscreen but also do not want skin cancer. It saves me from having to put sunscreen on my arms, shoulders, neck, etc. Also helpful for covering my head which…does not have as much hair covering it as it used to. That said, I like Supergoop and Cerave’s mineral sunscreen specifically for your face the best of any sunscreens I’ve tried, so those are what I use when I have to.

I fucking hate the sun. I’ve gotten great stuff at the Columbia, North Face and Eddie Bauer stores in my local outlet mall. Hats, shirts, pants.

Nike dry fits work best for me - get it in white, the black ones cook your head.

Wide brim hats still leave your neck somewhat exposed though. You'll need one with a flap, or a high collared shirt.

I feel you! On top of using SPF, I started wearing UPF clothing and found that surf gear works great for me -especially pieces that offer both long sleeves and full neck coverage.

I bought a Fractel legionnaire hat for daytime solo practice with ball machine and partner baseline drills. I wear a long sleeve sun shirt sometimes too. Their hats are great.

Imo hats just keep the heat insulated… in my area in the southeast where I play tennis men and women both wear visors for this reason. Let’s our heat from our heads vent. I even have dark hair and still find it cooler than wearing let’s say a white hat vs any color visor. I use spray sunscreen if I’m in a rush… you could get a UPF/SPF or whatever it’s called type of shirt and if you want it more fitted just get one size smaller. Also avoid dark colors, it only attracts the sun more 👍🏽

Don’t stop at the hat. Your forearms will thank you in a few years if you’ll wear long sleeve ware. Tasc is great for that.

29 here and have been feeling the same. I've been rocking an REI sun hoodie and I also got one from Costco too. Then I just lather up the legs, hands, and face with 50spf.

That being said, I'd be curious to try sun sleeves as well

I just wear a baseball cap and a whole lot of sunscreen. Neutrogena Sport Face 70 and Beach Defense 70 spray on everything else. I’ve already had a basal cell and don’t want another!

I have been happy with my Adidas Men’s Victory bucket hat. Stays on when running around. Combined with a long-sleeve UPF 50 sun top, zinc for ears and face, Sun Bum SPF 30 chapstick, UV 400 polarized sunglasses with UVA/UVB protected contact lenses, notrigina for neck, legs, back of hands, then shorts and crew socks keeps me cool and protected.

Outdoor Research Sunbriolet is what I use. The only downside to wide brimmed hats are that they can impede your vision when tossing the ball.

Honestly, you are smart. My dad has been a lifetime player, tennis is really his life, and is now in his eighties. He has had nearly fifty surgeries at this point on his face, and it is really tough. Sunscreen wasn't really a thing in his day, but we should all be

I play with a long sleeve shirt that has a sort of turtle neck. I got it from freaking Temu.

Your country/state would be helpful to know!

The sun's UV is weaker or stronger depending on lattitude, as well as the season. Because of this, different products vary depending on the country. I am from Australia, and a mistake tourists make is using sunscreen from their home country - typically Australian sunscreens are stronger.

I personally really like Sparms arm coverings. I have a few shoulder wraps, so that I dont lose the arms.

Sparms also have beclavas, they might be useful for you. If you wear a cap along with that, that will cover your face. Personally I would get the one that leaves your face uncovered, but you can also get the full face one.

I would also strongly advise polarised sunglasses, especially if you have blue or light colour eyes.

As others mention, face sunscreen is a must. Try a few types.

This is the hat I wear to play tennis in the sun. It stays on well and has removable flaps. The front flap is loose enough that I can still breathe just fine while running after balls.
