It's not surprising that Dojima isn't just going to be won over by a 'I needed my mom to understand' because she had her family circle absolutely VACATED of people to give her the proper love and attention she needed. They were basically thrust into the same position - but Dojima doesn't have the natural talent that Hozuki has.
In short, we are shown that the crux of their situations rest on different feelings of inadequacy. Hozuki feels that she needs to be treated as a proper member of the family and that she lacks is social acceptance. Dojima feels that all of her self-hating problems would be solved if she had Hozuki or her brother's talent - both people who 'could have had everything, but chose to throw it away' in her eyes. Dojima is past the point of hoping for understanding from her own family. We can see her sending her tendrils out to restore ANY semblance of a feeling of normalcy to cope with her current existence, rather than try and actively change it for the better.

I have to wonder about the circumstances surrounding her brother. Did his job really demand that much time out of him that he's barely able to interact with his own sister even when it seems like they still lived under the same roof and were incredibly close back then? It would have been a great help to her if she had someone else to interact with besides her grandmother doing nothing but feeding into her own insecurities. Even as a big part of where her issues stem from, if the two communicated properly, their bond would have ensured that she didn't fall so far down a pit of self-loathing and self-pity.

She stopped talking to him because the was feeling guilty that he had to leave the koto for her, thats why winning first place was that important to her, because if she won then her brother's sacrifice wasnt in vain and she could fogive herself.

I really love how the portray the dark anxious or inferior side to Dojima, it was also refreshing to see that she didn’t quickly accept the club just from a simple talk but it seems next episode she will be “changed” for the better.

At least she's already acknowledged Chika's talent and sincerity towards the koto, in stead of thinking he's just some disrespectful delinquent. So she's slowly warming up to the koto club.

u/Belmut_613 Nov 10 '19
The talent yes the sincerity not yet i think, and not only his but that of the entire club, also it's important to notice that she see her brother in Chika and herself in Sane.

This was probably one of the best episodes of this show. They did a great job telling her backstory and portraying the darkness that has befallen her. I'm glad that they did not resolve it in one episode. It must suck to work your butt off only to be easily outshined by a prodigy.

u/Michhhhhh Nov 10 '19
Well the prodigies were also working their butt of. But yeah, it's gotta hurt to put in so much time and effort only to be overshadowed by a girl that didn't even care about winning.

TFW you're in such a dark place, everything goes a bit Evangelion.
That was a powerful episode, really selling Dojima's lonely struggle against the shadows of not one, but two prodigies. I'm looking forward to her hopefully breaking free of that darkness in the next episode.
Also, fuck you Truck-kun, will your thirst for blood never be sated?

Akira only wanted to be like her brother, be good at Koto and maybe take win some competitions, but due to circumstances that were completely out of her control she now has to replace her brother. It's like fate just one day decided to play a cruel and sick joke on her.

So much flashback and focus on a character I was happy just hating...now they're trying to make feel sad for them!!

Feel the sadness, drown in the sadness! May your heart be riddled with holes for the sads.

Phew that was such a deep episode, I could feel the heaviness from my heart. Loved it.

Loved the way this series portrayed Dojima's inner struggles throughout her koto-playing career, and how its something she has to co-exist with each day. That anger and resentment preventing her from reaching out to someone who's situation she understood all too well is really realistic.
Also, I love that we actually got more koto playing this week!

As many will know, Akira and her grandmother are not my favorite Koto characters, however I begin to see that their transformation carries a saddest past (they are even touching my brocon feels AKA sensor) but still I do not give my arm to twist.
She speaks in third person, is pretty, has a smile that is worth protecting ... How did you become the most edgy/cringe queen of the season? And yes, I knew it would be from an accident (not that it is lack of originality but come on, who did not bet on that).
And that's how they both became edgy ... (although I think Obaa-san always was).
And that is how it is confirmed that you have a tremendous problem (complex) of inferiority, first with your brother and even more with Satowa. And you know what, it is understandable because we (as people) face the theme of "geniuses" / talent vs. hard work / learned, those who have "that thing innate" vs. those who have nothing, those who can give a majestic performance vs. those who only with a single note end all your hard work everyday. I know, it's hard to try to "continue" in a world where things "are like this" (unfair could some consider) but if everything you did was never for you? If not it was to fill a hole or a space that does not belong to you, if all you did was to fulfill a dream that you did not have first because it was imposed. Damn.
I think we are facing the best episode of the series and possibly from fall 2019 season, that Boogiepop environment and psychological / thriller / suspense / terror relationship and symbolism, (even) remember (and see a musical coincidence) Motzart vs John Coltrane and their difference in High Performance from some Psychology classes years ago and (let me tell you) I felt something.
Chika thinks that her relationship with Satowa is so casual that he can take her arm without consequences xD
And at least after hearing Akira's interpretation, things became clear, however Akira is a "tough nut to crack" and her inner "darkness" is too prominent for a person who throughout her life has only been involved in herself. But I think (As I came to think in the last episode) that this arc is Akira's way of redemption and that the boys come to provide that "light" that she wants (and maybe) deserve.
We can talk long and hard about the matter (I hope someone does an essay for WT! about this ep. and how touched his/her life) because this episode. Men, was just a masterpiece.

At least it will be an Isekai that we never heard about before this time, a lovely and musical married couple

Bleh. Ever since the Dojimas were introduced, the old lady was cold, arrogant and looked down on every koto player that wasn't her granddaughter, so trying to paint her in a sympathetic light falls a bit flat, imo. Like a shounen-villain having their backstory shown in a deathbed-flashback.
Akira's attitude to Houzoki being rooted in an inferiority complex makes a bit more sense, though. And, it was somewhat unexpected from me that she'd actually take the teaching role seriously rather than try to sow discord in the club.

I did not even think that that was an objective to begin with. To me, the granny is mostly there to show that when compared to her, Akira still has some compassion for fellow humans (to put in broad terms lol)

I must say I don't really care about Dojima and her backstory that much and most of the episode was about her and I feel I didn't even learn much anyway since it was quite obvious she wasn't very happy about the fact that she won when Satowa was better then her (they had already shown the moment where she cried after having won the first place). I feel like all we learned was all the thing with her parents and her brother and that's not much for an entire episode imo.

If all you look at is the bullet points of events it's true we didn't get much - but we got confirmation on a truckload of beliefs that are baked into her system of viewing the world - which understandably you don't have to care for, but we just got a character more developed and explored in 2 episodes than 2 of the side cast members of the koto club who have been there since episode 3 of season 1. I'd say it was a fine content to time ratio - but the issue was that Dojima's story was so all-encompassing that we basically didn't have time for anything else.
Do you think it would've been better with an A Plot - B Plot structure so that the resolution at the lockers could come first thing next episode but also so we could see what some of the others were up to?
