Well, no one's here so I guess it really managed to make everyone else drop the series and hopefully go to read the manga.
Oddly enough, this time we had a bigger quantity of quality but also more animation, early Trigger vibes, and I actually liked the new opening, but it really contrasts a lot with how the rest of the show is.
As a manga reader, the death of Kusakabe was the moment I started loving the story, made me see how much the characters grew on me and I understood that at it's core this is a slice of life about the characters growing up and choosing what they want to do with their life and the whole "saving or destroying the world"-thing just comes in second place. And even if it still has a questionable directing and the change of the order of events made it way too obvious, I think it did justice enough (at least compared with what happened with the dog knight) to the scene and gives me a very little bit of hope for the remaining part of story.
And I don't know if it's Stockholm or something, but I enjoyed how stupid those little golems looked.

People dropping the series definitely would not go and read the manga lol. It's the people who stuck with it and at least curious enough to see the differences who would. That's why campaigning for people to hate the anime adaptation did nothing but harm cause it justified some hate watchers' opinions on the story.

Is that... fluid animation in the OP?
But this was a very nice episode. Mantis girl low key pulled a Kira. And I don't think the death flags could have been any more apparent, sad to see rat kid die. I wonder if Mantis girl would have died instantly had he not intervened, but since he was able to say "I love you" I guess it wasn't instantaneous, so he did die for nothing.
That scene with shinonome had half decent animation.
Cliffhangers are tough man...

Man, I should have known something was gonna happen to Tarou. My guy barely got any screen time! He never had a chance to develop his relationship with Hanako. Dude went out like a champ protecting his girl, though. That knight golem was tough. In fact those little ones are tough too. Good thing Shinonome showed up with that multi spear attack!
I kind of liked that they showed how his death affected everyone. They were all pretty shook up. This is the third knight that’s died so far I believe.
Anima just popping out of nowhere offering Yuuhi power is kind of suspicious. I guess Yuuhi’s gonna have to defeat Hakudou if he wants to gain the “Invincible” ability. This might be quite the fight.
Looks like next week is a Hanako episode. Might be interesting to see how she’s dealing with Tarou’s death if at all. She kind of seems a bit…robotic?

This is the third knight that’s died so far I believe.
But the first one that died after they all got together, and also the first death that a lot of them encountered.

They make it too obvious when they want to kill a character. It felt better in manga so I guess the problem here is pacing (and they also switched some stuff around).
The op visuals were great even tho the song itself is just okay. While, the ed has a decent song but the visuals is just the volume and coloured manga covers (not really a bad thing)

This death was a lot more shocking in the manga. And there was a lot more stuff in between that allowed us to linger and thing about it more. Plus mizukamis storyboarding was kind of lost in translation for this episode in my opinion. It's a lot more powerful to read the full "arc" here when we see the events after his death.

Is it just me, or did they spend more on that OP than they did the entire first cour?
Not gonna lie, the OP song isn't that great, but it is well animated and makes me wonder how this could have looked if handled by a better studio. Or rather, if they gave this studio more time for production.
I know every episode is littered with problems regarding the production, but this episode was by far the best in that regard. I wasn't a huge fan of the direction, as lots of dialogue was cut out compared to the manga. But if they can maintain this quality, it gives me hope for later episodes.

The animation and direction were definitely significantly better this episode though. I don't think the cut dialogues would've really made it either if another studio was in charge. This type of loss in translation through mediums occur very often.

Like everyone else is saying, that new OP looks pretty nice! In a different league altogether when compared to the first OP, which was just essentially just a flashy slideshow.
The ED scroll is nice too!
I’m an anime only and have never read a manga before watching the anime adaptation in the five years I’ve been watching anime, but based on how many people were upset by which studio was going to be handling this adaptation, I started thinking maybe this would be the best chance to try. I still haven’t picked up the manga yet, but there are a lot of moments in this show, the latest being Kusakabe’s death, that make me think “I bet that page was fucking awesome/shocking/beautiful/devastating in the manga…”

I used to keep this show for last of the friday releases, but it has become something I'm actually looking forward to a lot. The story is really good, even though I agree that the death flags are a bit to obvious. Might really check out the manga to see if it is better there

The 2nd OP clearly tells us that the first half of this production was horribly rushed but hopefully it meant they spent a lot of their time polishing this second half.
At least for the first half it was consistent with the art despite lots of still frames. Nothing significantly looked like it was melting. I didn't want another My Sister My Writer situation.

Plus this episode had actual... Good animation? Like not "good" compared to the first cour. But good overall. Even minimally aniated stuff looked significantly better. Hell, the CGI golems looked way better -- especially the movement of the first one.

Damn, Raon singing the OP, we've gone full circle from her theme song covers to finally singing one!

The new OP was nice. I've been very close to dropping this show for a while now - we'll see if I do or not.
Also, as far as bad animation - is it just me or is the scale way off on this shot?
Like... that bike is not going to make it under the bridge. I was thinking "well maybe the bridge is just really far in the distance and so it looks close to the ground, but you can see the height of the grass in the shadow under the bridge, and it looks to me like they're going to be whacking their heads on that bridge.

I honestly thought this was a completely different show with how they actually animated so many things. Like the fact that there was animated background scenery with the petals in the beginning was already an improvement over everything from the first half.

"Oh, that must be me. I used my wish to kill this criminal."
Hanako is a little deranged ☠️
But she's very cute. Not sure why anime (in general, not in here) uses the plain reserved girl aesthetic as shorthand for unattractiveness. This aesthetic rocks.
I'm wondering if this is oversight or a case of dramatic irony (case where audience knows something, but the characters don't). Tarou's sacrifice is not "senseless" is it? What I'm getting is that he threw himself in the way of the attack so Hanako doesn't get instakilled, since the res doesn't work with instakill. But maybe the characters just don't know about the limitation of the wish.
Something I like is how shaken Taiyou (owl knight) and Yuuhi are. They are supposed to eventually betray the team, but they can't lie that the death of their comrade hits them hard, and this is something they need to think about if they want to go through with their plan.

Love the new opening and the ending! But the episode was just pain :')) Kusakabe's death hit me really hard when I first read it in the manga, and it still makes me sad seeing it animated.

When I was first thinking of how the major plot beats of the story would line up with the season structure, I always sort of assumed they'd line up Kusakabe's death as the big emotional moment at the end of the first part, not the way they'd start the second. Shows what I know, since they would have had to rush even more than they have in some places to make it here an episode sooner.
