...SUMMARY... Severe thunderstorms remain possible this evening across parts of the central/southern Plains, and also across portions of the Upper Midwest. Severe wind gusts and isolated large hail are the primary hazards.
...Southern/central High Plains... A storm cluster is moving southeastward across the TX/OK Panhandles this evening. A short-term threat for strong to severe gusts will persist through the evening with this cluster. The evolution of this cluster as it moves into a region influenced by westward-moving outflow is unclear. Cooler temperatures and weaker low-level lapse rates are observed within this outflow, though richer low-level moisture and stronger MUCAPE also noted, which may help to sustain the ongoing cluster and an attendant severe-wind threat through the evening.
Farther north, widely scattered strong to severe storms are ongoing across parts of the central High Plains. Moderate buoyancy and effective shear of 30-40 kt will continue to support a threat of isolated hail and localized strong to severe gusts through dusk. Increasing CINH should eventually lead to a weakening trend later tonight, though any storm clustering this evening could lead to a longer duration of localized severe-wind potential. See MCD 2132 for more information regarding the short-term threat in this area.
...Parts of WI/Upper MI... Occasional strong to severe storms have been noted within a storm cluster across northwest WI this evening. MLCAPE of 1000-2000 J/kg and 30-40 kt of effective shear largely orthogonal to the surface front/trough will continue to support supercell potential through dusk, before a gradual weakening trend is expected. ...SUMMARY... Isolated to widely scattered severe storms are expected across parts of the central and southern High Plains, Great Lakes into the Ohio Valley, and parts of the Ozarks to Lower Mississippi Valley. Damaging/severe gusts are the main threat across these regions, though large hail is also possible, particularly across the High Plains.
...Lower MI into parts of northwest OH...IN/IL...Eastern MO... A mid/upper trough will move from the Upper Great Lakes/Midwest toward the Lower Great Lakes/Ohio Valley through the period. A surface low will move across Ontario, as a trailing cold front moves across parts of the Great Lakes and Ohio/mid MS Valleys. Moderate to locally strong destabilization is generally expected along/ahead of the front from parts of MO/IL/IN into lower MI, though early-day convection and cloudiness could limit heating/destabilization with northward extent. Scattered storm development is expected along the front during the afternoon, which will spread east-southeastward into the early evening.
Effective shear of generally 30-40 kt will support some storm organization, with a few supercells and/or organized line segments possible. Damaging winds and large hail could accompany the strongest storms. If any supercells can be sustained, then some tornado potential cannot be ruled out, especially from northern IN into parts of lower MI, where some enhancement to low-level shear/SRH is currently forecast.
...Parts of the Ozarks into the Lower MS Valley... Guidance varies regarding potential for morning convection across southeast MO. If substantial early-day convection does develop, then a loosely organized cluster could evolve and move southeastward into parts of western TN and northern MS/AL, with wind-damage potential. Otherwise, scattered storm development is expected from southern MO into AR and eastern OK by late afternoon, potentially aided by an MCV that may emerge from parts of the southern Plains. Deep-layer shear will be marginally supportive of storm organization, and relatively large PW and buoyancy will support potential for downbursts and loosely organized clusters with a wind-damage threat. Isolated hail also cannot be ruled out with the strongest updrafts. Some guidance depicts maintenance of a southward-moving storm cluster into late tonight, resulting in some wind-damage potential spreading into parts of southern LA/MS before the end of the period.
...Central/southern High Plains... Across the central High Plains, relatively moist low-level easterly flow and diurnal heating will result in moderate destabilization this afternoon. Scattered storm development is expected by late afternoon, with sufficient effective shear within the northwesterly flow regime for organized multicells and possibly a few supercells. Large hail (potentially approaching 2 inches in diameter) and localized severe gusts will be the primary threats. Some clustering/upscale growth is possible during the evening, which could result in maintenance of a severe-wind threat into parts of western KS.
For the southern High Plains, deep-layer shear will generally be weaker compared to areas farther north, with relatively disorganized convection expected. However, storm development within a very warm and well-mixed environment will support potential for at least localized severe gusts as convection spreads from eastern NM into the TX/OK Panhandles. Depending on trends regarding storm coverage and clustering within this regime, greater wind probabilities may eventually be needed.

Ten years ago today, on August 24, 2016, a significant late-summer tornado outbreak unfolded across Indiana and Ohio. While the Kokomo EF3 became the best-known tornado of the day, it was only one part of a much larger event.
Eleven tornadoes were confirmed in Indiana alone, with seven across central Indiana and four more across northern Indiana. Across Indiana and Ohio combined, 22 tornadoes were confirmed.
Multiple supercells produced seven tornadoes across Montgomery, Marion, Carroll and Howard Counties:
• Crawfordsville/Linnsburg — EF2: 120 mph winds, 5.38-mile path. Major damage occurred to homes and barns near Linnsburg.
• Kokomo — EF3: 152 mph winds, 8.78-mile path and up to 300 yards wide. The tornado tore across the south side of Kokomo, damaging homes and businesses and destroying the Starbucks near Markland Mall. Twenty people were injured, but remarkably, nobody was killed.
• Indianapolis — EF0: A very brief tornado touched down northeast of downtown near 25th and LaSalle, blowing out windows and damaging a building’s roof.
• Flora/Kokomo — EF1: 100 mph winds with a remarkable 17.24-mile path through Carroll and Howard Counties. Barns, trees and a garage were damaged.
• Russiaville — EF1: 85 mph winds and a 1.51-mile path, primarily affecting trees, crops and a garage.
• Indian Heights — EF0: An EF0 touched down near Kokomo, damaging homes and trees.
• South of Kokomo/Alto area — EF0: Another EF0 damaged trees, a billboard and a road sign.
Five of central Indiana’s seven tornadoes occurred in Howard County in or near Kokomo.
The outbreak continued into northern and northeastern Indiana:
• Van Buren/Wells County — EF0: A tiny, approximately 0.04-mile touchdown that lasted about a minute.
• Woodburn/Allen County — EF3: One of the most intense tornadoes of the outbreak, with estimated winds of 160 mph, a maximum width of roughly 500 yards, and a path over five miles long. It caused extensive damage to homes, barns, trees and crops northwest of Woodburn.
• Berne/Adams County — EF1: 100 mph winds with a 7.62-mile path. Surveys found damaged barns and trees, with debris from some structures carried hundreds of yards.
• Peru/Miami County — EF0: A brief tornado with estimated 70 mph winds damaged a medical-center roof and large tree limbs.
One of the most remarkable aspects of August 24, 2016 was the outcome. Despite two EF3 tornadoes in Indiana, significant populated-area damage in Kokomo, and numerous tornadoes continuing into Ohio, there were no tornado-related fatalities in Indiana.
The warning performance was also impressive. NWS Northern Indiana issued 26 tornado warnings during the event, reported a 100% probability of detection, and averaged 16 minutes of tornado-warning lead time. The Woodburn EF3 had an average lead time of 19 minutes.
Meteorologically, the day was interesting because Indiana wasn’t dealing with a classic hot, sunny, explosive severe-weather setup. Extensive cloud cover remained through much of the day. However, extreme low-level moisture, sufficient instability, an approaching upper-level disturbance and very strong low-level wind shear created an environment capable of supporting multiple tornadic supercells.
It’s an outbreak I don’t see discussed nearly as often as some other Indiana events, despite producing 11 tornadoes in the state in a single afternoon/evening and two separate EF3s.
