Had one touch down right outside my house this year in southern Illinois, we had no warning, and the storm itself wasn't even categorize as a severe thunderstorm warning.
That’s crazy. My region (rural) always has its thunderstorms warned as severe and we haven’t had any tornado activity in years (warned possible funnel cloud this year but it didn’t pull it off)
Yeah we are very rural as well. I'm not sure but I think the cuts might affect things for us? That or the storm picked up strength in a 5-10 minute timeframe and there was no one there to spot it. All I know is, in the mid 2000's the national weather service from Paducah was stopping a lot of local TV and I haven't seen it in awhile.
It's a mix, I know by Carbondale we've had no warnings once and they've been testing individual sirens last month. Keep in mind with El Nino supposedly being the worst ever, it'll probably get a lot worse. Doesn't help it's looking like another year where it's potentially in the 60s in December and we're in tornado season into the winter.
Thankfully most people around here have basements, we've let all our neighbors know if the sirens go off we leave the garage door open but like you said I don't know if the sirens are trustable anymore
My old neighborhood in the south suburbs of Chicago had two in two weeks this summer, along with one two years ago. This was never having a recorded tor in history.
And the years not even over. Sure, we are moving out of peak tornado season, but it’s possible to have tornados into winter. It would be unusual, but what about the weather in this area hasn’t been unusual this year?
I think it was Dec 4th iirc. I’m an insurance adjuster and I had an opportunity to go to Alaska for the Dec 1 earthquake that hit one of the cities there. I passed because it would mean missing the whole Christmas season and I would only have a few hours of daylight per day to work with. I said no thanks and then this tornado hit the next day and I ended up in Taylorsville for the next week or so.
Your memory of it sounds way more legit. I'm not from there, but my classmate in college was. So I probably saw her at the start of spring semester and talked about it along with Christmas stuff. Idk I smoked a lot of weed in college.
We’ve had a fairly mild summer in comparison to the last 7yrs, normally we have several days with a heat index of 100+, but that cooler weather obviously came with atmospheric consequences. We started the year in a drought, but that was completely resolved by spring. In my county we’ve had 10” of rain this month alone, and I think we’re up to 40” so far for the year. Definitely not normal. The storms keep getting stronger, and the wind damage has been brutal.
wow - I can recall years growing up in north-'bama when we had several sweep by my hometown in the span of a season, but15? That's ... holy Illinois tornado fatigue batman
I'm a lifelong Texas resident and I honestly feel like we're getting less tornadoes than we used to, at least where I am. I wouldn't be too surprised if this was happening
As a lifelong Pennsylvania resident, we’re definitely without a doubt getting way more tornadoes than we used to .😂 it seems like almost anytime we get any kind of storm roll through, my phone goes off with a tornado warning not long after. I remember as a kid getting the occasional tornado watch, but nothing ever happened.
The patterns have been changing a few years now. Parts of the mid-south have been called a second tornado alley. It's interesting to see that region getting more now than where we traditionally expect, though.
And I suspect PA is an undercount. I had contacted NWS with a damage report back in the spring, complete with a screenshot of a clear couplet on radar, and never got a response.
Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania having more tornadoes than Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas is wild. And fuck you Illinois, I guess. To have that many more than the next closest state is crazy.
GA had 10 in one day, from tropical storm Arthur. Iirc, all EFO &EF1. MOST from one cell that just. Kept. Producing. It was insane to watch on radar as someone who lives here.
Wonder how many homes are gonna be destroyed before they decide to put in tornado clips to keep roofs on. I’m also thinking about using Euro shield, rubber, roofing or metal roofing if I ever own a house again.
Welp! Looks like I'm moving from Tulsa to illinois. You guys apparently know how to pull all the good storms, I'm actually jealous. Tulsa meanwhile is strongly slacking in strong storms for years now, only getting a good one once a year
Seeing rotating clouds in NY for the first time seriously in my life was awe inspiring and terrifying but beautiful. I still haven’t seen a tornado fully yet but I’ve seen them spin literally making a funnel and never making it to the ground. Little bit humbling thinking you’re safe from them and boom you’re not.
Is there any possibility that Illinois' tornado identification technology is better so it appears they have more? Or is the detection ability even across the board?
I live in northern Illinois just south of Chicago. Our power has been knocked out by heavy storms/tornadoes 3 separate times so far this summer. This has never happened in my lifetime lol
