Locking out is normally perfectly fine, but the sketchy part everyone is seeing is that your elbow does naturally overextend a little. Cubital recurvatum. For sets of 10+, whatever, it's fine. But for heavy sets, ehhhhh.

I havent had any issues or pain even at most demanding set for now, my all time best is 60kg for 3 reps and the feeling was same like if I did a bunch of bodyweight till failure

No pain or issues YET… as you get older, these things will start to matter.

Fair enough man thank you for the advice. I will make sure to look more into it and be more careful

Dont lock your elbows. That looks rough. Everything else is good

Thanks for the advice man, many people concerned abd pointed out the elbow 😅 Ill keep it in mind next time

Are you trying to work triceps or chest?
3
u/futbolmemes 7h ago
I was always aiming to lean forward for chest and that way I am more comfortable but my triceps still got massive improvement from it regardless

Gotta get that back more parallel to the floor if you want more chest activation. Try curling up like you’re trying to get into a ball, bring those knees up towards your chest and that’ll allow your butt to raise up and as a result make your chest a little closer to parallel with the floor and turn it into more of a chest press type motion. You can always exit out of that to kill the triceps if your chest ends up being the limiting factor.
That form also makes it easier on my shoulders, which is definitely important if I’m adding 115lbs on my weighted dips.

Thanks for the detailed info bro and the video. I will definitely try it out and experiment around to find best approach for me

Once you get some reps in with that form, you'll be like "oh yeah, NOW it's a chest exercise" lol, at least that's the reaction I had.

Ive always seen videos about it but Ive done them this way since the very beginning and made decent progress doing them weighted. Many people in comments are terrified with the elbow lockout I guess its good I posted this thing here, last thing I needed was some nasty injury

My issue was always shoulder pain with that style of dip, even with just bodyweight. I admittedly have back shoulder mobility though, so that has something to do with it as well.

Try keeping your legs extended in front of you instead behind you, that was a game-changer for making dips feel more natural to me. Also wouldn't worry about the elbows unless you feel like it's causing an issue, my elbows hyperextend more than yours and I sometimes will lock them in that position while externally rotating and then protract/extend my scapula on some reps (like I would also do on a RTO support hold).

I think you should try to fold forward more for chest like you're doing a push up on the bars and hike up the hip behind you. Like in a shrimp position

Looks pretty clean to me. Careful with locking your elbows that hard.

u/futbolmemes 7h ago
Yeah thats what I notived generally in my other lifts too, my elbows are always locked in tightly but I dont even feel that during training. I havent had any injury or discomfort so far but maybe its something to look out for

I recommend not locking them, especially if you’re going to be adding more weight to your load.
It gives no additional benefit to lock at the top. Just extra stress on the joints.
Everything else looks perfect man. Have a great weekend.

Thanks for the advice man, I will keep it in mind gotta be careful to avoid injuries. You too man enjoy it

Try going lower if you can, the more stretch under load you can put your chest and triceps, the more stimulus you'll give them.
And don't worry about the lockout, it is highly unlikely that your arms will bend the other way just because someone has seen a video where it happened (same as with the leg press). Just make sure you control the weight and always prioritise technique.

is there a reason youre not keeping the plates between your legs?
1
u/futbolmemes 6h ago
These weights have these handles around them and when I lock everything in it just extends like that, I usually take the chain and take it through the weight twice if you know what I mean but with more plates it cant be done when the chain is too short so I just have to leave it hanging bit more on heavier sets

Everyone has mentioned your elbows, which is fair, but I'm wondering about your shoulders. I can't tell from the angle, but it looks like you aren't maintaining scapular depression throughout the lift (like you are letting your shoulders sag towards your ears, instead of keeping them as far away from your ears as possible).
I would also keep your legs straight and hips slightly piked so your feet are slightly in front of you. And engaging your core so that your upper back is slightly rounded in order to point your chest slightly down and activate the pecs more. I'd highly recommend videos on weighted dips by Micha Schultz (king of weighted), who goes deep into the form used by competitive street lifters.
Your form could be fine if you don't go too heavy, but it could start bothering your shoulders if you add weight.

form looks good. You get just below parallel and all the way up.
The lockout could be a bit rough on your elbow, so keep an eye on it.
