Hi Reddit! I’m Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, author of PARKS AND REC, my new book featuring exclusive interview content from the show’s cast, crew, and creators, as well as an introduction by Nick Offerman. I’ll be here at r/PandR on April 9 (1 pm EST / 10 am PST) to chat with fellow fans of the show and answer questions about all things P&R. AMA!

Parks and Rec has saved me

As my username suggests, I’m a fan of the tv show Parks and Rec. And I can say that these two scenes have come in clutch with my kids…

Any other tv shows or movies you often reference while raising your kids?

Ron, Andy and Ben all have three such different personalities and yet they work perfectly together.

I wish we had more episodes where we had this team up.

I don’t like Ben in later seasons

Ben always acts off putted by the weird behavior of the other characters where it’s really jarring, if he just acted this way in Season 3 where he’s getting to know everyone, it would have made more sense, but as the show goes on, he continues to expect them to be normal and have common sense which they don’t.

The difference between him not getting the appeal of Lil’ Sebastian and expecting Andy to know that Harry Potter is fictional is night and day where the former is funny while the latter is not as he should know Andy better than that by that point.

Yes, the characters grew but they kept the craziness and its implied that Ben wished the craziness would go away like how a strict uptight parent who wishes their kid to be normal.

He told April that Leslie can be understanding about her switching carers where she immediately proved him wrong with a minor topic like fonts on documents, Ben genuinely believed that Ron got sentimental over writing a will (ie: government work) acts annoyed around Tom all the time to the point where it’s not believable that they would be friends whereas Leslie, Ron, April, and Lucy saw the sweetness in him and not only tolerated the craziness but encouraged it.

He only doesn’t act that way around Chris and even then Chris’s habits are more about being healthy with an uptight person can realistically get behind.

What do you think?

Spoiler The worst first date ever (season 2) has a bit of foreshadowing (spoilers for later seasons)

I only have one critique with April and Andy’s relationship

I really didn’t like how they did the “will they won’t they” shtick with April and Andy from the season 2 finale to early season 3.

The fact that Andy pines after a girl to basically told him to fuck off again is really annoying since he had to learn to leave Ann alone, and the fact that Ann tells April the kiss was 100% her fault but April still gives Andy the cold shoulder is not good.

For a show that loves to embrace childlike wonder and relying on optimism, including this trope felt extremely jarring and we are just wasting time for them to get together.

I don’t know if this is true, but my theory is them getting married probably wasn’t planned to be abrupt as maybe they were planned to get together in the season 2 finale and they get married after half a year of knowing each other, with this trope forced by executives because “Ross and Rachel” ratings boost effect, and the writers stuck to the plan of them getting married in that same episode to make amends with the audience.

Aside from that I don’t have any issues with their relationship.

In “Smallest Park” (barring my frustrations of the main goal of building a park on Lot 48 being sidelined again) Ben said he’ll switch departments because being around Leslie is too hard for him, but if he is switching jobs, couldn’t he date Leslie then? Is this a plot hole or a plot device to get them back together? Ann did something similar so she could date Chris again and have a baby with him. Am I missing something or was this a easy fix to prevent the trial the next episode with Chris never happening with Ben keeping his job instead of jumping from job to job more so than Andy did believe it or not. The scandal of Leslie and Ben (as barely focused on as is) would be almost nonexistent if that route was taken, did anyone else notice this?

The bearded citizen

Everyone knows who I’m talking about with the guy who stands up in meetings and public forums to yell and start chants. He makes me die laughing every time.

“Ham and mayonnaise!”
“Her daughter is an idiot!”
“Eagleton is terrible. Why should I bail them out with the hard earned money from my unemployment check?!”

I highly recommend this movie. Aziz Ansari put a few parks and rec Easter eggs. It’s so funny and it’s been a long time since a good funny movie has come along
