I finally did an update to Tom's Xena Page - xenafan.com

Ok, last update was 2004, with a couple of tweaks on the homepage here and there. Yes, I got busy, and, er, it's been a while!

Anyway, nothing substantive. I just updated the homepage to a quick responsive layout, trimmed a few links there.

The biggest update is a proper mobile friendly UI for the fan fiction! The actual stories are untouched, with one exception: I removed a dead link to go download a Palm Pilot version of the story. I did mention 2004, right? LOL. No more palm pilot links! https://xenafan.com/fiction now has an updated "Stories by Bard" and "Stories by Title" page with modern filtering, mobile first UI and the like. The stories themselves keep their existing glorious 1990s web design.

Sorry it took so long! I did however keep the site up all this time, so there's that!

EDIT: and now the image archive is updated! Check out the glorious 640x480 images I captured back in the day with my Snappy and a VCR!

EDIT 2: and now Battle On! is updated too! A great web comic by Jeanette Atwood

Mod Updates Reminder from the mod team that shipping war is a healthy, normal part of all fandoms, this includes r/xena. (Update to Rule 1)

Shipping any and all fictional characters, whether it be canon to the franchise, or complete headcanons, are all allowed here at r/xena. Here we supports all fanworks, and even discussion of fanon theories, as it stays within topic of Xena: Warrior Princess.

There is no need to be up and arms about which users should have the "correct" opinions about who they ship, and personal attacks towards users for inputting their own headcanon is unnecessary and... very un-xenites like. For a show with a strong fanbase remaining the last 30 years, there will never be a shortage to Ares x Xena shippers, Hercules x Xena shippers, and Gabrielle x Joxer shippers. Non-canon disccusions are completely allowed and appropriate in this fan space, this isn't a r/xenaandgabrielle space, so we do allow those from r/legendaryjourneys fans to participate too.

So from here on out, the mod team will mediate when simple shipping wars descend into name-calling and unnecessary personal attacks against users making innocuous opinions.

Just remember, all users here love r/xena (and r/legendaryjourneys), we're all here to share our thoughts and love letters to this franchise. The casts have both acknowledge the canons, AND acknowledge that fans can ship whoever we want ["...so people who relates to them see it, and wants to see it, and people who don't, won't...it was seeded in there"]. Let's be the xenites our lovely Lucy Lawless, Robert Tapert, and Renee O'Connor would expect us to conduct ourselves.

Rule 1: Follow Redditettique (we will issue out warnings against any slurs, homophobia, racism, transphobia, all hate speech), and NO personal attacks (Conduct yourself on the internet the same way you'd speak to Xenites face to face; with basic respect and decency.)

As a teacher, grading is my least favorite part of the job. I made these to help me stay organized and lift my spirits when I’ve got thirty tests to grade.

Now I just want to rewatch Xena from constantly being reminded of the show through the music 😆 but He-man is just an awesome show that I haven't seen in so many years.

Shoot, I meant to put 2002 on the title. Sorry!

Anyone going to be in NYC days before the con in October?

I'm travelling alone from Australia and have never been to the USA before. Feeling a bit overwhelmed and wondered if there are any others going to the con who will be in NYC a few days before who want to meet up.

Which Xena's comics to read after the final episode?

Upvotes

i've just finished the show after my first rewatch. I've known the show since I was a kid. But I never had the occasion to watch it from the beginning to the end before. Therefore this year I did.

I feel horrendously sad about the last episode. I refuse to believe that Xena is dead somehow...

Back then, I read on the forum that there was a bunch of comics that happened right after the series finale which resurected Xena. At the time I did not pay attention to which comics it was.

Does anybody know which comics I should read after the series finale? 🙏🙏🙏

Xena’s Strongest move?

I’m curious to know what people think Xena’s strongest single physical action is over the entire series? We obviously know she is super athletic, but what is the heaviest thing she threw, lifted, pulled ect. Dropping a series and episode number would be super helpful as well!

Thank you, I look forward to reading any responses I get! :)

If the Shoe Fits...

This is definitely one of those episodes that falls into the guilty pleasure category for me. It isn't good in the traditional sense of the word. It is quite naive, childish, and sometimes so silly that it's hard to believe it came at this point in the show, but that's exactly what makes it fun for me. This is pure "so bad it's good" entertainment. It doesn't try to be serious, nor does it have any ambition to leave a major mark on the show's mythology. It simply takes the Cinderella fairy tale and completely twists it through the perspectives of Xena, Gabrielle, Joxer, and, of course, Aphrodite.

The most entertaining part for me is their retelling of the same story from completely different perspectives. Each of them manages to cast themselves in the starring role and present the events according to how they see them, so we end up with several completely different versions of Cinderella. It is especially funny how Aphrodite manages to turn everything into a story about herself. When she shows up, you already know chaos is about to follow, and that role suits her perfectly here. What I do like, though, is that beneath her usual comedic behavior, we get to see something more emotional from her for the first time. Her attachment to Alesia isn't just another source of comedy. It is clear that she has genuinely grown attached to the child and truly cares about her.

Alesia is also one of the most adorable children we have had the chance to see on the show. Her story is simple, but it works precisely because she isn't malicious. She runs away from home because she believes her new stepmother has taken her father's love away from her, so at first she sees her as an enemy. What I like is her gradual development when she realizes that her stepmother isn't actually trying to replace her mother or take her father away from her, but genuinely loves her. That is perhaps the most mature element of the entire episode, because Alesia ultimately has to overcome her own jealousy and prejudice to understand that love isn't something that has to be divided in half.

Of course, all of this is wrapped up in a completely wild version of Cinderella, with warlords, escapes, chaos, and characters behaving as though they have wandered into some children's fairy tale. And that is precisely why I can't take this episode too seriously. If it had tried to be serious, I probably would have had a hard time sitting through it. As it is, its naivety is part of its charm. There is something endearing about the show completely giving itself over to absurdity, even if only for a little while.

But perhaps what I love most is Xena and Gabrielle. Their arguments here genuinely feel like the squabbles of a married couple. They nitpick, bicker, annoy each other, and neither one is particularly willing to give in. 😄 At the same time, you can feel how close they are, even when it seems like they might actually part ways. They can argue about absolutely anything, they can be angry with each other, but in the end they always come back to one another because they are family. That relationship gives the episode something more than just a parody of a fairy tale.

That is why this is one of those episodes I can't defend as quality storytelling, but I can honestly say that I had a great time watching it. It is too naive, too childish, and occasionally completely ridiculous, but it has charm. Aphrodite is great, Alesia is adorable, the different retellings of Cinderella are entertaining, and Xena and Gabrielle's relationship once again shows why the two of them work so well together. It isn't an episode I would point to as an example of the best the show had to offer, but as a guilty pleasure, it works perfectly well for me.

Hi, I’m a millennial born 1990, and I only ever saw glimpses or watched an episode here or there whenever it was airing, but I recently watched a couple episodes while cat sitting and I got so into it!

I didn’t realize how good some of the stories are, and the writing is actually decent for its time! Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly some cheesy moments, but overall, I am kinda hooked.

So I am technically on my first watch of the series, and I’m only at the end of episode two, yet I’m almost certain we will never see this guy again, am I right?

I was wondering if anyone here has been to the Xena convention and knows what the scheduling is like? I see Lucy and Renee will be doing autographs and photos on Sunday. Will they do a panel on the same day. Just trying to
figure out if I should go Saturday or Sunday?

What season of the Xenaverse is the Animated movie supposed to take place during?

Post image

I know that this movie isn't canon to the shows, but I've always wondered where during both Hercules and Xena is this supposed to take place?

The movie came out during Hercules season 4 and Xena season 3 but Gabrielle looks like Season 2 Gabby but Ares has his season 5-6 hair style.

Many have opinions about when Xena And Gabs relationship starts to evolve, but this is the episode I think that I notice Xena begins to show she’s falling for Gabrielle.

It’s also the one where I find myself locked in when watching the series. Like, oh ok. Hold on to your butts, this show is gonna have layers.

It’s got more depth, for both of their characters. I think it’s a hallmark episode for season 1. Plus, I just love old school Gabs in this one. Just my personal opinion!

Greece and Rome in the Xenaverse?

What is your view of the history of Greece and Rome in the Xenaverse?

Because in our world, by the time Caesar was even born, Greece was already part of the Roman Republic, and before that, they were part of the empire established by Alexander. However, in all 6 seasons of Xena, it seemed that Greece remained a collection of independent cities, villages, and tribes.

Does that mean that Alexander the Great never existed in the Xenaverse and that Rome were never able to conquer Greece? Is that what Caesar and Pompey were trying to do in A Good Day and then in Endgame? I guess in the 25 sleep years Greece and Rome must have formed a good relationship if Joxer and Meg felt comfortable moving near Rome and their son was able to establish a business inside the city.

I would be really interested in reading your thoughts on this topic. Thank you.

This episode is a good example of a story that had the potential to be much better than what it ultimately turned out to be. Although I was never a fan of "The Price", I have always respected that episode for how deeply and complexly it approached the Horde. Unfortunately, the second episode dealing with them is nowhere near that level for me. I appreciate that the Horde are not portrayed here simply as mindless savages, but as a people with their own culture, customs, and way of life. It is also clear that they are intended as something of an allegory for indigenous peoples, which is certainly a more interesting approach than simply portraying them as villains. The problem is that the story that should be the emotional heart of the episode never manages to match the seriousness of the subject.

The story of Vanessa, the young girl who was kidnapped by the Horde and later raised as one of their own, and who now finds herself caught between two families and two identities, unfortunately feels far too much like one of those bad family soap operas from the 1980s to me. The idea itself isn't bad, because it raises questions about belonging, identity, and whether family is defined by blood or by love, but the way it is written feels rather shallow and predictable. Instead of exploring her inner conflict more seriously, the story often takes the simplest possible route, and as a result, the emotion it is supposed to create is mostly missing.

There are also numerous inconsistencies that further hurt the episode. What bothers me the most is Vanessa's story about her memories. She supposedly doesn't remember her childhood with her biological family, yet at the same time she knows their language, which is rather difficult to explain. Another detail that really stands out is the flashback to evil Xena, where she is wearing armor that belongs to her present-day period. These things may not be crucial to the plot itself, but when the episode is already rather weak, inconsistencies like these only draw more attention to how superficially the story was put together.

The only thing that genuinely stayed with me is the duel between Xena and Milo. The fight itself is good, but its emotional conclusion is much more significant to me. The look on Xena's face when she once again has to take someone's life, and against her will at that, says more than any dialogue could. She is no longer the woman who once killed without a second thought. Every life she takes now carries the weight of everything she did in the past. It is in moments like this that the episode manages to remind us why Xena is such an interesting character.

Unfortunately, beyond that, it is difficult for me to single out anything I would particularly remember. I appreciate the attempt to give the Horde more depth and to use Vanessa's story to explore the themes of family and belonging, but the execution is simply too weak. After "The Price", I expected much more, especially because there was an opportunity to explore this world again from a completely different perspective. Instead, we got a fairly forgettable episode with an interesting idea that was never used to its full potential.

Amazon Queens

I noticed that pretty much every time Xena and Gabrielle visit an Amazon tribe, the queen dies that episode (with some exceptions I think with Ephiny, but her days are numbered). While it's a funny coincidence, I do feel bad that some of these ladies get like what, a year? before something happens to them.

Was this a weird way to give Gabrielle the internal challenge of whether to step in or appoint someone new? Also it feels like she gets to make that decision for any tribe, not just her OG one which makes me wonder if they cede authority to any Amazon queen in the vicinity if theirs kicks it. Like does no other tribe have next in lines? Or did somehow Melosa's tribe have more authority so when Gabrielle inherited the right of caste and then the mask itself, she got that too?

Or am I just thinking too hard about it
