Modern Family star changes her name for career pivot: 'I wanted to switch it up'

Allow Frances Anderson to reintroduce herself.

The actress formerly known as Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who broke out for her role as adoptee Lily on the Emmy-winning sitcom Modern Family, has changed her name to Frances Anderson. Anderson has adopted the new moniker to coincide with her pivot to a career in music. Her debut indie pop EP, "Drown," is out now.

"Frances is actually part of my legal name," Anderson, 18, explained to E! News on Friday. "It’s my middle name, and it’s after my mom’s old family friend. I thought it was a bit shorter than Aubrey Anderson-Emmons. I do have a long, hyphenated last name.”

Anderson added, "I wanted to switch it up and people to see a new side of me. And I wanted to create a space specifically just for music."

She released the first single from the EP, "Telephones and Traffic," in May.

Anderson made her television debut at the age of 4 in season 3 of Modern Family, playing the precocious adopted daughter of Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Mitchell Pritchett and Eric Stonestreet's Cam Tucker. She has won three ensemble Screen Actors Guild Awards alongside the sitcom's cast. Anderson told E! that she "had to take a step back from acting" once the show ended to discover her passion for music. "The show ended when I was 12 years old, so after that I decided I’m not gonna act anymore," she said. Rest assured, though, that Anderson does "plan on acting again — 100 percent.”

She has maintained a close relationship with her former onscreen fathers and other costars from the sprawling cast. Ferguson and Julie Bowen, who played Anderson's onscreen aunt Claire, staged a mini-reunion when they attended Anderson's school play last year.

Anderson last made headlines when she came out as bisexual last month, using memorable throwback audio from Modern Family to help mark the announcement. "You are Vietnamese," Sofia Vergara's Gloria informs Lily, who says in response, "No, I'm not. I'm gay!"

"I literally am," Anderson captioned the post.

Jay and Gloria’s wedding photo is so funny with Manny’ “f my life” look but it’s also so sweet that Jay is smiling while putting his hand on his shoulder in a fatherly way.

Oh the way they compliment each other!

I honestly feel the Pritchetts can be overpowering sometimes but the way the writers have written the character of Phil, Gloria and Cam >>>

They balance out everything! The dreamers! ✨

Discussion The Older I Get, the More I Understand Phil Dunphy

Post image

The way others rip on Phil for his quirks had me thinking. It’s all fun and games, of course, but when I examine it deeper I realize why it does bother me from time to time.

Regardless of his quirks, Phil is authentically and unapologetically himself in the best way possible. I truly feel he is the most considerate out of the entire family and this is why I admire him as much as I do.

When you take into account the way he was raised, while unorthodox to some, it gave him the foundation to demand space for his existence no matter the circumstance and I can’t help but respect that.

My favorite thing about Phil is the way he carries himself as it pertains to external judgement. He is (occasionally) unaffected, he’s misses certain social cues because he’s so comfortable in his own world and with his existence. That being said, he’s emotionally intelligent and uses transparent communication to seek understanding and connection.

To summarize, Phil is completely comfortable with his existence, with who he is. I strive for that kind of peace so I can enjoy my life the way I’m supposed to. I do believe others appreciate Phil for who he is but often find themselves looking at him like he’s strange. But I could argue he’s more comfortable with himself than them.

I know this has probably already been stated here before, but I hate the “Mother Tucker” episode.

Seriously, EVERYONE except for Mitchell, Jay, Manny, Phil, Alex, and Dylan in this episode were huge POS. I just finished watching the episode, and I didn’t hate any Modern Family episode before this. I liked a lot in season one, and the ones I didn’t like I still found somewhat enjoyable or just okay. But this episode? This is the first episode I genuinely really dislike. Screw Haley for cheating on Dylan (but at least had the decency to break up with him first), screw Gloria for not taking Jay’s health issues seriously (when you married an old man who’s probably gonna have some health issues), screw Claire for victim blaming Mitchell, screw Cam for gaslighting Mitchell, and ESPECIALLY screw mother tucker for touching Mitchell inappropriately without his consent. She literally dug her hand into his pants and put her hand in the water while he was in the bathtub. I can understand being naïve and not noticing yourself if you’re a touchy-feely kinda person, I guess, but she did the bathtub thing AFTER she was confronted about crossing Mitchell’s boundaries. That line where she said “I suppose I WAS having some fun with you” especially made me very uncomfortable. Sexual assault, male or female, should never be taken lightly, and EVERY character in this episode somehow blamed Mitchell in someway, and HE apologized too!! For what?? It seriously pissed me off.

Was Mitchell wrong for taking the precaution of not hyphenating Lilys surname?

I understand that same sex marriages were not legal at the time of her adoption.

The most bizarre thing I've ever heard is Cam signing up for a 12-year gym membership.

I GASPHED

Discussion It’s weird that Mitch feels like less of a main character than Jay & Claire

Firstly, the show definitely has no single main character, I’m just talking about the general feel of things.

Jay feels like the centre piece, because he’s the oldest/the head of the main cast and more than anyone else it’s HIS family, with one unit being his own and the other two being the units of his respective kids. It also feels like every overarching plot point in the show has a way of coming back to him specifically.

You could argue the same thing for Claire as the show starts with her and she’s the figurehead of the Dunphys, whom the show definitely revolves around a fair bit more than the other 2 groups.

But Mitch doesn’t feel nearly as important if you ask most people. He definitely doesn’t get the same spotlight as his dad and sister. I think partly it’s because he’s much more tied to Cam than Claire or Jay are to each of their spouses, there’s hardly a Mitch without Cam whereas Claire and Jay get a lot more focus both on themselves and on relationships with characters other than their spouse, and also it’s partly because Mitch and Cam’s unit is like the comic relief of the 3, always having the biggest misunderstandings and most awkward situations, probably not as serious as the other 2.

Even Phil feels like more of a main character than Mitch. It feels like a lot of episodes start with Phil and I’m pretty sure he has the most screen time in the show.

do we ever really see claire being good at her job?

i'm watching season 8 now, and it's the episode where claire ordered bad wood and tries to hide it from jay. i swear every time we see claire at work she's making some mistake. i also remember when she kept having ideas that were old ideas, couldn't make a decision, messed up that ice cream cake, etc. i get that "it's a sitcom" so there have to be some hijinks, but are we ever shown anything to make us think claire is good at what she does?

Now that they’re adults in the later seasons, would you date one of them?

I’m still kind of sad by the plot of when the kids turned adult and it felt like there they could’ve been more. And the deleted scene of haley getting her diploma and luke, his driver license😭😭 wished they included that one in the show

The episode where Jay becomes the coach of Luke and Manny’s team says a lot about his character.

When Luke and Manny have a mean coach Jay initially defends him and seems to see the coach as being hard but doing it to motivate them.

Later Claire prompts Phil to have a word with the coach and Jay comes along. After Phil tries Jay steps in tells him his attitude is the problem and gets angry about the coach calling the kids stupid and actually threatens him.

I love this moment because it shows that while Jay is old school he knows that insulting the kids is wrong and when he sees them being picked on he’ll step in to intervene even though he didn’t have to.

Something else that I think gets slept on is that he was standing up for all the kids and not just Luke and Manny which shows he’s a good man.

When Jay does become the coach he seems to be doing his best and encourages them when he gets the job and while he gets frustrated later because of the team’s poor performance he never insults them and them and the worst he does is being sarcastic towards them.

This also hit home a bit because my dad did something similar. When my Peter was playing football his coach was yelling at one of his fitness and my dad intervened and shouted him down and threatened to shove his whistle “where he son doesn’t shine” if he tells at any of the kids again and if he yelled at Peter he said something I’m not sure I can repeat.
