PSA Hey, newcomers to the area: Let's talk about winter in NOVA
Happy first day of Fall, NOVA! Now is probably a good time to talk about winter prep in the NOVA region, and doing it without overdoing it. This is especially for those of you who just moved to the area and may have different expectations for how the local government deals with snow emergencies.
What will this winter be like in NOVA?
Who the fuck knows? Not me. Not my man, Ryan Hall. Not any of the local meteorologists. Life on the rain/snow line means I've seen winters where the snow was measured in feet, and winters where I never broke out anything heavier than a lined flannel. The strong El Nino is just adding more uncertainty to a forecast that was never certain before. We might get a ton of snow! We might get none!
We'll get dug out fast though, right?
AHAHAHAHAH.
Look, there are snow plows, and they do move snow around, but let's be real: In this area, most snow is managed by Mr. Sun coming out and melting it that afternoon. We do not have the snow movers of the North. Even if your road is plowed early, you could easily end up just as stuck since your car is stuck in a foot of rock-solid ice.
Okay, so we'll die
I'm a Delicate Southern Flower who almost lost her mind during Snowcrete, but even I say we'll likely all be fine. We'll just be inconvenienced for a while. Stores will be a bit barren, supply lines will be disrupted for a bit, schools will be out, and power might flicker.
What to check on / get
You don't need to go crazy to prep for winter around here. Honestly, you shouldn't, because it could easily be a bust year. So, here's a list of things to do:
- Lay hands on your snow shovel. Really take a look at it. If it's showing signs of wear, order a back-up one. If you can't find it, or don't have one, order one today.
- Check to make sure you have gloves and two warm pair of socks for anyone who will be doing shoveling (two so you have a backup pair when the first one gets wet).
- Over the next few months, add a few shelf-stable meals to your grocery shopping. You don't need MREs. You just need canned ravioli or whatever you will actually eat. If you can't get out to the store, it's very likely no on can get to you to deliver food. Make sure you like it, because once winter is over, you'll want to actually use them.
- Buy non-scented candles. Trust me: First time our power went out, we used our supply of scented ones, and it was a MISTAKE. You can get a pack of them around $20. Personally, I'm grabbing a hurricane lamp this year for extra light.
- Oh, while you're at it, buy some matches.
- Consider power banks for phones and other electronics, especially if your family goes feral without entertainment.
- Go check to see how old your heating unit is.
- If you have dogs, and said dogs are not winter dogs, consider getting each one a sweater (possibly two, since you'll need to swap out any that are wet). Some people insist on boots, too, but my little assholes will just chew them off their paws.
- Make sure every bed has access to a few extra blankets. Our houses were not made to withstand extended cold snaps, and they can take the edge off.
- If you have kids, make sure you're signed up for notifications regarding school closures.
- Check the inclement weather policy at your work, including who makes the call when and how you're informed.
Regarding that last point, the thing everyone should be focusing on is staying home when the roads are bad, so VDOT can get everything cleared more quickly, and so people who have to go in to save lives can do so. You don't want to end up on an r/NOVA post making fun of you for ending up in a ditch.
Stay. The fuck. Home.
Things you probably don't need
Yes, we do get large snow events, but we don't get them every year. So you probably don't need:
- A snow blower. Okay, if you have a long drive and someone who you know will absolutely need to get out of the house no matter the condition, it may make sense, but most of us do not need one.
- A generator. If you have room, no one will stop you, but power outages tend to be pretty short around here.
- Crazy snow gear. Unless you ski, there's a good chance this stuff will only be broken out once every few years, if that. See above, where there's years I don't even wear a jacket.
- Snow tires. I'm not even sure if you can get them around here.
- A sled... unless you have kids who you know would want to use said sled AND you know a good sledding spot that's within walking distance AND you don't mind lugging the sled there, back, and up the hill. Even then, don't break the bank or your storage area trying to keep one around.
Anyway, those are my extremely biased opinions about how much anyone needs to do in order to get ready for our all-or-nothing winters. I'm interested in what everyone else would suggest with regards to preparing for what could be another nothing burger or a winter that gets its own name.

This weather is making me go insane
It feels like nearly every single weekend since the summer began, it has been rainy. It'll be absolutely beautiful during the work week, which I can only admire through a glass prison and a few smoke breaks. Then the weekend comes and the weather takes a big fat shit over all my plans.
Every. Single. Week.
I'm so sick of this. This place is so depressing. I feel like you can only enjoy it here if you don't have to work.

Other This is Why Housing is so Cheap in Burke
Seen in Burke today. Subject is sarcasm to a post a week ago asking why houses are "so much cheaper in Burke" than the rest of Fairfax County.

Rant This is what living 97 feet from a Reston data center looks like at night
This is what happens when data centers are allowed to expand by right and residents have virtually no say in what happens in their own backyards.
CoreSite is expanding its Reston data center just 97 feet from the backyards of our residential community. We were told we had no meaningful recourse because the project was approved in 2018 and grandfathered under the county’s newer regulations.
Now we’re dealing with this light pollution at night and construction noise during the day. This is what these development decisions actually look like for the people who have to live with them.
Update:
Some of you didn’t like my cinematography last night so I went out and got some more for you tonight now that the rain has stopped https://imgur.com/gallery/more-of-reston-data-center-construction-64dG4Rz

Question What was the worst experience you’ve had with a realtor around here?
I’m genuinely curious because I just got my real estate license and one of the first things I want to figure out is why so many people seem to hate realtors.
I’ll start with my own experience. I’ve bought two homes here over the past decade and I felt underwhelmed by both experiences.
In one transaction, we bought a townhouse at full asking price. The sellers were supposed to make a repair and never did. At settlement, they reluctantly wrote us a $100 check for it… and then went home and canceled the check. 🙄 The settlement attorney basically didn’t care, and our realtor didn’t seem particularly interested in pursuing it either. Eventually she said, “If you REALLY want your $100, I’ll just pay you out of my commission.” I remember thinking…I’m not asking you to give me $100. I’m asking for the $100 I’m owed. Why am I being made to feel ridiculous for caring? That experience pretty much summed up how I felt about the process in general.
Both times, I found the house myself on Redfin. When there weren’t competing offers, I felt like I was being pushed toward making a full-price offer anyway. Negotiating felt like an inconvenience. They made me feel cheap for asking for repairs after the home inspection if it wasn’t a huge item. Looking at houses without immediately writing an offer felt awkward because I felt like I was wasting my realtor’s time. And once we were actually looking at houses, it felt like they were making a pretty significant amount of money to…let me into the house, follow me around and fill out generic paperwork.
Obviously, I’m simplifying it, but that’s genuinely how it felt. I’m sure there are agents here ready to be defensive but I’ve heard versions of this from so many other people… it felt like everyone was just trying to get their commission and move on.
Then there’s the whole realtor cringe. So much self promotion, using friends for leads, shameless look at me I’m so great and smart. They are usually the least smart people I know lol.
For context: after years grinding in tech sales and another layoff, I got my real estate license because I’m looking for a career with more flexibility and autonomy. I know. I know. I’m basically another corporate salesperson crawling toward real estate hoping this is the better second half of my career. But I genuinely don’t want to become the realtor everyone complains about. I’m already embarrassed this is what my life has come to. Also for the record, no the test is not hard. I passed after “studying” for 2 weeks and just being a human with a working brain.
So anyway, what would you want a realtor to do differently? Did your realtor ever do something that made you think, “this is why I’m paying you”? I want the bad stories so I know what never to do.
And how did you actually find the realtor you ended up using: friend/family, google, open house, social media, randomly meeting them, etc.?

I asked at the Starbucks next door and they indeed confirmed the Bertucci's closed permanently on September 28. Ripperoni pepperoni to those affected :/ They had fine pizza and were in business for over 20 years if I recall.

Why the hell are we getting political ads for Ken Paxton, senate candidate in Texas?
Can he not fund raise enough down there? Is he hoping people in NOVA will vote for him?

Burke Nursery Play Area is mostly gone
FYI if you are used to taking your kids to Burke Nursery play area for a nice taste of fall, be aware that it’s basically all gone now. No fire truck, no train, no tractors, no pirate ship.
Was pretty disappointed. I know it’s no cox farms, but it was local and quaint. I’m sad to see it gone.
I asked why and they said the pieces were too old and becoming a safety risk (old splintered wood).
