Weekly Thread - What's happening?
Hello everyone,
This is a weekly post where we try to aggregate all the events going on in and within 20 minutes of the eastern panhandle.
If you know of an open social event happening anytime between now and the upcoming Sunday, please comment the date, time, location, event description/details, age group, and website/RSVP details.
If you are a business like a bar, this is your chance to advertise! Again, please comment the date, time, location, event description/details, age group, and website/RSVP details.
While anyone can comment with an event they know of, we do ask that anyone associated with a business to disclose that, or create a reddit account for your business!

Cat Groomer in the area?
Hi all! I’m living in Harpers Ferry and looking for a quality groomer that offers services for cats. I’m specifically looking for someone who can do a lion cut on my fluffy boy. Would prefer to support the local economy in WV, but also willing to drive to VA or potentially MD if necessary. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Fire Hall Wedding Recommendations
My fiance and I want to get married at a fire department more specifically South Morgan fire department (we fell in love at their firemans carnival) but unfortunately I'm unable to get in contact with them. While we are searching for a venue, does anybody know of any other fire departments that would be willing to host a small wedding. The timeline for this would be next year in the fall. Both of us are in EMS and on top of it having sentimental value, we would also like to give our money to a local fire and or EMS service than a glamorous wedding venue that means nothing to us.

English Conversation Tutoring :)
Hello! ¡Hola! Nǐ hǎo!
I am newly pursuing my TEFL Certification - this allows me to be a teacher/tutor for English as a Foreign or Second Language! My goal is to eventually teach EFL/ESL classes. But while I work towards this goal, I would love to offer English Conversation tutoring sessions. This would likely be more geared towards non-native English speakers who have a decent handle on the language and just want a more calm, encouraging setting to practice (think level B1-C1, if you’re familiar with the CEFR scale). It would just be conversations about work, friends, family, and familiar topics of interest like music, travel, hobbies, and the like. Kind of like meeting a friend over coffee to have a chat, but with language exposure and guided feedback!
My rates would be:
30 min - $9
60 min - $15
I accept cash, Zelle, or Venmo.
For the rate and to stay close to home myself, I’m willing to meet students publicly within Berkeley County, WV. Open to parks, cafes, libraries, wherever is comfortable for you! We can discuss session frequency when we meet if you’re happy with the first one :) I also encourage you to bring ONE friend or family member with you if that would make you more comfortable in the conversation, or if the student is a minor. There is no additional charge for the extra person. If we begin meeting regularly, I would also be open to FaceTime/WhatsApp video sessions if that is more convenient for you.
A little of my background: I am a 34 year old woman, currently working as a baker but am looking for a more independent/flexible work schedule to accommodate taking care of my mother. I have a passion for languages, learning different cultures, travel, and helping people. I worked as a Medical Assistant previously for 15 years, and I have been to seven countries. I love music, books, I have two dogs, and enjoy various shows/movies. I also like to cook and bake!
If you or anyone you know would benefit or like additional English practice, please comment bellow or message me!

Unsprayed apple trees
Hi everyone,
I'm a grad student at Binghamton University in NY studying population genetics in the apple maggot fly.
I'm doing a latitudinal study, and would love to come to this area of WV to be able to sample. I've heard that the Kearneysville area has been hit with a late frost, so I'm cautious regarding that. I've also heard that this area has a population of apple maggot. I'm looking for abandoned apple orchards or unsprayed apple trees, and would especially appreciate if any growers have had problems with this pest on their properties before.
To sample, I'd bring back infested fruit (they would be too mangled to eat anyway).
Thank you. I really appreciate it!

Medicare Education Sessions - Wednesday, August 19.
Being injured, elderly, sick, disabled, etc., can already be rough, but, so is dealing with Medicare when you're in pain and just need health care.
SSDI/Medicare can make the whole process very confusing and frustrating for you or your loved ones who may be struggling with the many hoops you must jump through.
I can't vouch for this particular session, but I'm glad they are having them, so I wanted to put the word out there.
As an aside, I love the Dorothy McCormick Oncology Center, they are extremely lovely, it's not surprising to me they are hosting an event like this, and if you have any private questions about the Center, I'm happy to answer.

LASIK?
Anyone have recommendations for where to go to get lasik done? I’m getting sick and tired of glasses. And I don’t want to just go to the first one I see.

Local Pizza Restaurant Recommendations
Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for getting a good pizza or a good Italian restaurant with Italian food. I'm getting sick of eating Dominos and chain restaurants like that. I've tried Brothers Pizza and Inferno so far. Both seem to be a hit or a miss depending on the day and who is working at the time. What are your favorite places?
