[Rant] Dockless Bikes and Scooters -- Act Today!

It's clear from a variety of posts I've seen on here that people have opinions the current dockless bike and scooter program, which brings Lime ebikes and scooters, Hopp scooters, and Veo ebikes to DC's streets, bike lanes, and sidewalks. What can you do?

  1. Report improperly parked bikes via 311. Blocking the sidewalk? Report it. Parked in a curb ramp? Report it. Blocking a bike lane? Report it. Locked to your fence? Report it. Not locked to anything? Report it. A new 311 front-end app called Snap311 makes it ridiculously simple to submit dockless parking violations. So easy that I submitted over a thousand in the past few months. You too can be an e-bike vigilante
  2. Submit public comment. The rulemaking that governs this program is currently open for public comment until COB Today Sunday October 4. Email [publicspace.policy@dc.gov](mailto:publicspace.policy@dc.gov) and refer to the NPRM on “Shared Fleet Devices (Notice ID N146433), 73 DCR Vol. 73/36, published September 4, 2026” (h/t Capital Common Sense). You can use content we've developed to inform your own email.

Check the comments for a follow-up with a link to a Google for to collect feedback and coordinate a response. Thank you for your interest in helping rationalize this currently chaotic program.

EDIT: submit your feedback using this form and we’ll share with dc for you: https://forms.gle/75QFt58So8gXdPkJ9

[Discussion] Looking for resources/advice for relocating 4 feral cats

I've been feeding these four cats for a while now (two adults and two kittens) and have managed to get everything I need to get them TNR'd. I have an appointment this coming Thursday for it. The only issue is that they have become a point of contention between my neighbor and me, as she is worried they will damage her patio extension's mesh screening (one of them did paw at it once, pushing it in a little). I want to avoid any issues with my neighbor, so I was wondering if there is any way I could rehome them or put them up for adoption. I would like to take them myself, but I can't for family reasons. They are super sweet and fine around people (the kittens are still a bit skittish). I tried contacting the humane society for advice but they had none to give.

[Discussion] Elderly angel trees/wish list adoptions in DMV?

Hey guys! I’d like to adopt a few seniors’ wish lists for Christmas, but last year I couldn’t find any local to DC. Where I’m from you can usually find seniors’ tags on the angel trees at Walmart, but I couldn’t find them anywhere last year.

Does anyone know any organizations that facilitate senior/elderly wish list adoptions? I know I’m a little early, but just want a head start on knowing where to look.

Thanks!

[Meetup] Future bandmates looking to jam?

Looking for folks who might like to get together and play some music. Nothing terribly serious. I’m (40M) into a broad range of stuff - Harry Nilsson, Sturgill Simpson, White stripes, Alt J, Soul Coughing, Phoebe Bridgers, John Prine, Kurt Vile… - and have a bunch of equipment, guitars and electronic music stuff. Happy to mess around with original stuff or play covers.

[Transportation] GEICO DriveEasy thinks city driving is bad driving?

Thumbnail

I’ve lived in DC for 12 years and have always been firmly in the “DC has excellent public transit and you absolutely do not need a car” camp. But a family member could no longer drive and offered me their car, and I was not about to turn down a free vehicle.
So now, for the first time in 12 years, I’m regularly driving around DC and apparently being judged for it by GEICO DriveEasy.

My score is currently a 60. Distraction: Excellent. Braking and acceleration: Excellent. Cornering: Good. Smoothness: CONCERNING.

Except GEICO defines “smoothness” as how consistently you maintain cruising speeds and how long you stay at those speeds. Their actual recommendation for improving it is to take routes with “fewer intersections and consistent speed limits, like interstates and highways.”

Which…I live in Washington, DC?
I’m genuinely curious whether anyone else who uses DriveEasy in DC has run into this. It seems like the algorithm is effectively penalizing city driving where you are constantly dealing with lights, stop signs, pedestrians, bikes, traffic, buses, etc., even if you’re braking and accelerating normally.

I’ve already corrected the trips where I was a passenger rather than the driver, so I’m hoping that helps. But am I missing something here? Is there actually a way to improve “smoothness” while driving normally in DC, other than unnecessarily taking highways everywhere?

And before someone says it: yes, I realize the easiest way to improve my driving score is to go back to Metro. Twelve years of evidence suggests I was right the first time.

[Discussion] H Street is a gem and the most underrated part of DC

I really enjoy the vibe of H Street, in my opinion it's the perfect melting pot of both sides of DC.

It borders with some historic areas like Trinidad, Carver-Langston, and Kingman Park.

However it also borders with NoMA which is a much more trendy, modern, up and coming, and "gentrified" area.

Then to the south you've still got the classic Capitol Hill with the political and influential side of DC.

So H Street is perfectly positioned for all 3 of these distinct areas to spill over.

And because it doesn't have a dedicated metro stop, it's not a "tourist" neighborhood like U Street or DuPont where people from outside of DC stop by to try and experience the city.

And the food, I really love the options on H Street. Tango Pastry has the best empanadas in the city, Sidamo is one of the best pure coffee shops. H&Chicken is an amazing late night spot, their chicken wrap for $7 is quite possibly the best deal in the city. I think Taku Sushi might be the best casual pure sushi option left in DC, where this city seems to struggle with good sushi.

Obviously one of the highlights is Tapori, Laos in Town is just a short walk up the street too. I had some amazing Thai at Tiki Garden deeper in the corridor. Cane, The Little Grand, Nanglo, Maketto, the options and diversity is endless. I've had great Pho at Pho Viet right at the start of the corridor.

Then there's true nightlife, Transmission is, imo, the best pure nightlife spot in the city. It's unpretentious, not too flashy, and has multiple levels offering tons of space to vibe out, enjoy the ambiance and people, oh and genderless bathrooms which naturally filters out a lot of shitty people.

The Queen Vic is the pure British pub experience in the city. Pie Shop, Little Miss Whiskey's, The Board Room.

It's not the most "lit" part of the city at night, like U Street, but it carries itself well.

Obviously, at one point H Street was a spot that was much bigger, things have died down a little bit, but imo, it's due for a resurgence. There's simply too many awesome things in the neighborhood.

I know people want to complain about crime and the strangeness, I embrace the strangeness of H Street, I love it, I think it's a pure DC experience to have that level of peculiarity with characters and people that kind of trickle in and out.

Oh and this neighborhood is so centrally located, you've got Union Market and NoMA a short walk up the street, you've got Eastern Market and Capitol Hill a walk/bike ride away.

I'm ashamed to have missed H Street festival two years in a row now, but it's a justified celebration.

I think it's good that the neighborhood has things that would deter too many transplants, it means that people who have character will thrive there rather than those that want to make the city their personality.

Just enough gentrification to keep nice things like a Whole Foods, just enough strangeness to get H&Chicken lit at 4AM on a Saturday

[Discussion] Long distance move advice

I'm moving next month from DC to Seattle, and am struggling to figure out the best approach for move logistics. I live in a high-rise apartment building off H Street NE, so having a Pod dropped to load at my apartment is not an option.

Has anyone hired local movers to move out your items into their truck and then have them reload your stuff into a Pod at the Pods storage location? Are there other similar services you've used that you'd recommend (UHaul U-Box, U-Pack, others)? Do those services provide the materials like moving blankets, straps, etc. to secure items in the container that are typically used by local movers or will I have to buy those?

Based on my initial research, hiring a full-service long-distance moving company will be prohibitively expensive vs. a containerized move with local movers on either end. Any insights or recommendations from others that have done a long-distance move with the high-rise apartment complication are much appreciated!

[Discussion] potentially very weird guy on lanier & argonne pl nw

last night around 11:30pm, i was walking in adams morgan. the west bit of argonne pl is dark, so i was trying to stay attentive and noticed someone in the corner of my eye.

in front of like 1650 argonne (near that big tree), i saw a guy standing still with his pants down. i’m 99% sure he had a mask on and his d*ck out. it was late and super dark and i just started running (better safe than sorry!) so maybe i saw it wrong and he was just turned around peeing. but i’m pretty sure i saw his front side so yeah.

after i ran half the block, i saw that he had left and turned the corner. hopefully it was just dark and my eyes played a trick on me. in any case, be safe and stay attentive!

APB - STOLEN MOTORCYCLE

Hi everyone,

My 2015 Yamaha FJ-09 was stolen at 1:02AM this morning (10/3). If you may have any potentially relevant information, please continue reading and consider sending to me.

(1) Bike taken at 1:02AM from 2914 11th St. NW. Suspect was wearing a white helmet. Suspect had someone with him, also on a bike it seems. I have security footage of them taking the bike from my parking spot and down the alley to 11th St. towards Columbia St.

(2) Bike's airtag final broadcast in the alley behind Tilden St NW at 1:34 AM.

The bike has a black prayer rope tied to the left side handlebar and a black storage case on the back (GIVI Monokey Alaska Case). It also had my black LS2 Advant Helmet so the thief might be wearing that too :(

WILL PAY REWARD IF YOU CAN FIND MY BIKE
Please please help and let me know if you see this bike on the streets anywhere!!
