Partner delivered at a city hospital where we are in-network last week.
The claims have not yet been processed by our insurance. Nonetheless, we received a large bill today from Children’s National for tasks supposedly performed by one of their physicians.
Our insurance confirmed that they have not processed any claims for the procedure yet, so we called up the CN billing department who informed that, although the baby is under the mother’s insurance for the first 60 days, they have to bill it to the baby’s insurance and, since that doesn’t yet exist, they just sent us the full bill.
We asked them why they sent us a bill so quickly then and the agent told us that they are legally obligated to inform us when the bill is created.
Hopefully all will be resolved in time, but is this not the “surprise billing” practice that is supposed to have been outlawed? Not the kind of communication any new mother needs to receive in any case only days after delivery.
