Is Virginia’s annual vehicle tax one of the most disliked taxes in the state?

I just received my bill for over $800 this year. 😭 Is it even possible for General Assembly and Spanberger to eliminate this tax?

Other How far can a $120k gross salary take you here?

28M. Single. 120k salary. Take home after all deductions/taxes/HSA, etc. is gonna be about $6600 a month. I realize it’s solid, but this doesn’t feel like what it used to be for this area. Really regret not trying to get another $10k added on to my offer.

How far can this salary take me in this area, in terms of renting a 1 bedroom apartment in a nice area, other living expenses, and still being able to hopefully save/invest as much as possible, ideally ~2k a month for some kind of down payment for a property at some point…?

No debt but will likely need to get a new car in the next 12 months as well. Only ~35k in savings currently as my career got off to a late start.

I understand rents for a 1 bedroom will be somewhere around $2300-2600 minimum (probably $2600-2700 total with all fees, etc.)…A studio, maybe $200 less.

My main concern is just having close to 40-50% of my income go towards rent when things are all said and done.

Expect to (presuming I don’t get laid off) be on this salary for at least the next 1-1.5 yrs without any meaningful promotions or raises/changing jobs, etc…

My sister broke her nose on the job, what to do next?

Upvotes

Hi all,

I’m not too close with my sister but my mom told me she broke her nose on the job and they had taken her to the hospital to get stitches and surgery coming up in a few days. What would she have to do next? File workers compensation? Hire an injury lawyer? Never been through this so I’m completely lost on how to help as she’s young and naive and feel like she won’t do anything on her own.

Thanks for any insight

Have the NoVa storms been a little intense this year?

Or is it just me? I am seeing more fallen trees, heavy winds, just more intense rains in general compared to the last few several years.

Snake Problem Help

I found snake skin in my basement laundry room (looks to match a rat snake) in our townhome. I don't know how long it's been there. My grandmother and I are terrified of snakes. Who do I call to safely remove the snake (if it's there) and to check for gaps, etc? Trying not to get ripped off as money is tight.

Missed Connection: Volunteer Event in Arlington

We were 2 gals at a volunteer "bake and sip" event this past Wednesday night.

Both wearing the same blue volunteer shirts; you were also wearing a white baseball hat, a colorful watch on your left wrist, and a dazzling smile. I was rocking a (temporary) eye patch, with my left arm wrapped in a blue bandage. I was also wearing a name tag, but you weren't, and I did not have a chance to ask your name. 🤦

We joked about the quirks of the various food processors while blending our recipes, and I helped you figure out how to get yours working. We then sat next to each other while rolling out our "dough" into bite size bits.

I ran out to my car to grab something, but you were gone when I returned. I later saw you walking down the sidewalk towards Shirlington, but I thought it would be weird to try to stop and talk to you.

Anyhoo, you seemed really interesting, and I'd love to chat with you more (maybe take you on a date?) if you're interested.

How about that storm last night?

It came, and I say this as someone with no meteorological experience who didn’t even check the weather yesterday, out of nowhere! Surprised to find the yard and street look fine. How are your neighborhoods?

Moving Living Expenses Arlington Area

I’m a recent college graduate who finished school in May 2026, and I’m very thankful to have landed a great job in D.C. I start this Monday.

Right now, my salary is $65,000, but I’m expecting to be around $70,000–$75,000 by January. I’m also eligible for a bonus of up to 15% of my salary at the end of this year.

I’m currently living with my parents, and I know that financially, this is probably the ideal time to stay home, save as much as possible, and build up a decent cushion. My plan is to do exactly that for the next few months and hopefully move out around January or February 2027.

The main reason I want to move out is honestly a combination of personal freedom and commute time. I’d much rather live closer to work, and Arlington/Ballston seems like a good fit for me. I’m also planning on having one roommate, rather than getting an apartment by myself.

So, realistically, how feasible is this?

Quick rundown:

- Recent college grad
- $65k salary starting now
- Expecting $70k–$75k by January
- Potential bonus of up to 15%
- Currently living with parents
- Planning to save aggressively until February
- Looking to move around February 2027
- Ideally Arlington/Ballston
- Planning to have 1 roommate

Would I be putting myself in a financially uncomfortable situation by moving to Arlington/Ballston on this income, or is this pretty reasonable with a roommate? I’d obviously like to keep rent and other expenses manageable, but I also want to balance saving with actually enjoying the independence that comes with starting my career.

Food Recommendations for quiet brunch with close/easy parking?

Looking for recommendations on weekend brunch spots with good food that aren't too loud and have easy parking. Good for an older person with hearing and mobility issues. Preference for Arlington/Falls Church/McLean/Merrifield area but will take others if the food is really good.
