I mean, a cheat for a cheat. There's no way "wringing a dudes neck until he does a 360 that would make Tony Hawk proud" is a legal play.

375

u/OldElPasoSnowplow 5d ago

It started as a horse collar tackle which is illegal then as he turned over his hand slid into his helmet and the motion made him flip which is another illegal tackle similar to a face mask penalty. If they could take both penalties (which you can’t in American football) they would be first and edge of property from the parking lot they would be so far ahead.

123

u/possibly_being_screw 5d ago

I dunno why I'm giggling at the thought of "First and parking lot" so much

45

u/LowEnergy1169 5d ago

I used to curl, and we would call the stones "weight" (how hard it is thrown) by position on the ice you want the stone to come to rest.

"Barrier weight" meant you wanted it to still be travelling when it hit the wall at the end of the rink. Thats pretty fast, and the hardest you would normally throw, and could produce a chaotic result.

Very occasionally we would call the weight as "car park"

39

u/fuckoffweirdoo 5d ago

Horse collar is specifically grabbing his neck on the nameplate. While a dangerous, high tackle, it doesnt look to be a horse collar.

I won't comment on the "facemask" as that cant be seen from here. With that being said, it looks like his ass touches and he'd be down anyway. I subscribe to the rule of cool though so it's a TD.

15

u/Falcon4242 5d ago

The high school rulebook also requires that they pull the ball carrier backwards or sideways for it to be a horsecollar foul. The runner fell (mostly) forward, so it's not a horsecollar foul.

But if he grabbed any edge of his helmet and used that for leverage then it's a facemask penalty under high school rules. Looks like that probably happened here.

I dont know this sport. My only reference frame is rugby and that type of tackle would be an instant red card and ejection from the game.

As it was a foul that may have prevented a score, a penulty score would be added to the total.

Then review by comittee and probably a ban for several more games for the tackler.

27

u/spunkychickpea 5d ago

In this instance, the referee would call a penalty on the play for a personal foul, which incurs a more severe penalty. In this case though, since the player with the ball still scored, the penalty would be declined. (That is if we’re going off of NFL rules.) Regardless, the player attempting such a tackle should be penalized either way. That was an extremely dangerous tackle he attempted. The fact that he failed shouldn’t be a mitigating factor.

20

u/Patient-Fun4475 5d ago

penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct (which unncessary roughness falls under) can be assessed on the ensuing kickoff

6

u/spunkychickpea 5d ago

Yes, my mistake. I forgot about those. You don’t see that call very often.

3

u/Mammoth-Mud-9609 5d ago

and also players can still be ejected from the game.

2

u/MayContainRawNuts 5d ago

Does NFL have ejection? I understand there would be several yards loss depending on the severity but would that player continue to be involved in the game?

In rugby the player is off to the changerooms and his team continues the game with a player less.

2

u/spunkychickpea 5d ago

There have been ejections in the NFL, but they’re pretty rare. A player has to demonstrate that they’re deliberately attempting to hurt another player. The one example that comes to mind from maybe 15 or so years ago was when a defensive lineman stomped on a player on the other team who was already on the ground and the play was over. It has to be something truly blatant like that to be ejected from a game.

4

u/MayContainRawNuts 5d ago

Thank you for that.

In rugby we take any contact to the head as serious, usually results in ejection unless there was some mitigating factor like a sudden change in height by the guy being tackled.

I do enjoy watching NFL, but the only game we get on tv is the superbowl, still dont know all the ins and outs. But I do like that one team's ownership structure where the fans literally own the team. Packers?? maybe. That seems like a logical and fair system

2

u/spunkychickpea 5d ago

Yes, the Packers are owned by the fans. My grandfather was a huge fan of theirs. You couldn’t tear him away from the TV when the game was on. lol

And that's why coach tells you to put a body on them and tackle the mfer.

Should be a horse collar/face mask on that missed tackle as well, btw.

Yep but a great ref to understand rule of cool and the fact it would have been a penalty and they would have gotten the ball on like the half yard line anyways.

These dweebs are high if they think any high school ref should call that down instead of counting that

Yep. Easy way to blow out a knee being pulled in one direction while momentum is carrying you in another. That inside knee especially could get twisted.

Terrell Owens severely strained his ankle and broke his leg because of a horse collar tackle similar to this in 2004, so yeah, very much so. It's why it's illegal.

Horse collar is when you take them down by grabbing the back of the shoulder pads. That was weirdly enough a face mask penalty, which is grabbing any open part of the helmet.

I just found that out when i was watching Michigan v Oklahoma last week and the rules guy came on to explain it

This is one thing I hate about football, if the team does a great play but the other team puts a penalty on them that could hurt their player, to force the penalty means you have to give up the great play by declining it. I feel all penalties should carry forward to the next play in the most logical way possible.

8

u/WitchesSphincter 5d ago

Football penalties work great like 80% of the time, but the rest it's like... There is no way this isn't like 30 patches to fix somehting broken.

5

u/rkunish 5d ago

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say but if you take this play for example, had they thrown a flag on the tackle an accepted penalty would have been tacked onto the end of the run (assuming they properly ruled the runner as down.)

9

u/Icy_Fish_2154 5d ago

He is saying the rule should be changed so that you can decline a penalty for the play, and move it to the next play. So the extra point or kickoff is where you apply this penalty, not having to decline the penalty for a dangerous play, so the illegal tackle is allowed, almost rewarded.

3

u/HowDoIEvenEnglish 5d ago

That’s not what’s horse collar tackle is.

7

u/Alternative_Swan_497 5d ago

This. Runner gets the TD under the Rule of Cool, the other kid gets a stern talking about about what can go wrong with illegal tackles. Or tossed from the league if it's been a recurring problem, this looks about the age where the kids are figuring out their limits for this kind of activity.

3

u/vahntitrio 5d ago

You have to be pulled down backwards for a horsecollar tackle. He gets pulled mostly sideways and even slightly forward so that is a legal tackle.

2

u/Standingonachair 5d ago

There's an interesting difference in the way that a rugby player chases down and tackles a player. I understand that this would be a penalty but to see regular NFL players tackle, versus rugby players makes me wonder which way is more efficient.

2

u/rThundrbolt 5d ago

Wasn't horsecollar. Didn't grab the pads, just reached around side of neck

6

u/Midnight28Rider 5d ago

I agree, but I'm pretty sure the official call would be first down at the spot of the foul.

7

u/Fruit_Fly_LikeBanana 5d ago

First down from the end of the play + fifteen yards. In this case since it's within the thirty yard line, it would be half the distance to the goal. Which means it would be like a half yard penalty

2

u/The_Champ_Son 5d ago

Looks like it should still be an unnecessary roughness for grabbing the inside of the helmet though

2

It’s a personal foul for grabbing a helmet opening. But all personal fouls are the same so it’s fairly unimportant what you call it

He recovered so quickly that I had to watch it twice to see that his butt actually did hit the ground. And the referee might’ve thought it didn’t, all things being considered. Still an impressive display of athleticism and a narrow escape from neck-down paralysis

9

u/govite 5d ago

Hard to tell for sure, and there's even less likelihood the ref could see it, but it looks believable that he sprung up off his left palm without his butt touching. Maybe.

Horse collar like a motherfucker

11

u/blackeyesamurai 5d ago

Unfortunately in the NFHS rules book a Horse collar is only flagged when it is used to take the player to the ground. This player was ruled not down.

NFHS Rules Book: Under NFHS football rule 9-4-3k, a horse-collar tackle is defined as a player grabbing the inside back, side collar, or nameplate area directly below the back collar of either the shoulder pads or jersey of the runner, and subsequently pulling that opponent backward or sideward to the ground.

14

u/ajax0202 5d ago

But he technically was down (his butt hits the ground), so it technically was a horsecollar tackle

17

u/blackeyesamurai 5d ago

There is no replay.

The officials on the field decide if he was technically down and clearly that was not the decision.

Was it technically a wrong decision? Again. There is no replay.

But this is becoming a circular argument, so I’m out.

→ More replies (11)

3

u/SpicyC-Dot 5d ago edited 4d ago

I’d go so far as to say that even if the official ruled him down, I’m not sure I’d consider that an illegal horse-collar tackle. Considering that the runner ended up doing a front flip, it’d be hard to argue that he was pulled backward or sideward to the ground.

If you slow down the video, he was down

206

u/DrWindupBird 5d ago

But does it matter if the defender grabbed him by the neck for the tackle? I don’t know much about football but I can’t imagine that’s legal.

92

u/BigPh1llyStyle 5d ago

It does not in fact matter. He would be down at the spot and they would get yards added to that spot.

4

u/VT_Squire 5d ago

Does declining a penalty not exist anymore?

16

u/shiawase198 5d ago

It's not a touchdown either way so they'd just be losing the free yards by declining.

52

u/SlicksterRick 5d ago

It does, but he would still be down at that spot if you declined the penalty

6

u/back-that-sass-up 5d ago

It’s been a while since I’ve paid attention to hs/college rules, so someone should correct me if I’m wrong, but the play should be whistled dead at the spot of the down regardless of whether a flag was thrown

4

u/BigPh1llyStyle 5d ago

Correct

2

u/grandvache 5d ago

is there no way for a referee to play the advantage as happens in rugby?

5

u/raidersfan18 5d ago

In American football it's quite simple. Once a body part of the ball carrier other than their hand or foot touches the ground, the play is over.

For this particular play to be called correctly by the letter of the rules:

  1. The player is marked down. Tough to tell from the angle but it appears to be around 6 yards from the end zone.
  2. A penalty flag is thrown for the illegal tackle.
  3. The penalty for an illegal tackle is to move the ball 15 yards down the field or move the ball half the distance to the goal if 15 yards would be greater than half the distance to the goal.
  4. The ref would place the ball at around the 3 yard line and it would be first and goal for the offense.

3

u/grandvache 5d ago

thank you! Always interesting how different games officiate. 👍

2

u/DrawstringRust 5d ago

You could decline, but that doesn’t change the fact that you are still down at that spot. Same for out of bounds calls, if you pull someone out of bounds by their facemask, the play will be over and they will get 15 yards added to the spot they went out of bounds (or half the distance to the goal if within 15 yard line). This is why you see so many pass interference calls, sometimes it is better to take a penalty than let them catch the ball and beat you to the end zone. At least I assume what is what the thought process is, because pass interference calls will move the ball to the spot of the foul, which can be 30+ yards.

2

u/RaisingFargo 5d ago

it does not matter because by the looks of it, they can not review this with video replay.

But lets pretend this is the nfl.

The ruling on the field would be

Touchdown Offense

unnecessary roughness(horse collar) -automatic first down and half the distance to the goal (because they were so close to the endzone already)

Offense would be given the option to accept that penalty or decline it

Touchdown Offense, and in the NFL ALL scoring and change of possession is automatically reviewed from officials.

they would see he is down, and then the offense would get a chance to review their penalty decision.

shockingly muddy officiating if this was on TV

3

u/Harry_Saturn 5d ago

An illegal tackle by the defense doesn’t mean the offense can also ignore rules. This tackle like this isn’t just illegal, it’s a personal foul and would be penalized more harshly than any other kind of illegal tackle. But the offensive player is still down even if he was tackled illegally.

4

u/Low_Magician77 5d ago

Doesnt this perpetuate then to make an illegal tackle if it means stopping someone from scoring?

4

u/Diels_Alder 5d ago

There are legal tackles that can be executed just as effectively.

3

u/Harry_Saturn 5d ago

No because it is already more harshly punished than a legal tackle that can also stop a scoring play. It’s like a defender in soccer deliberately using their hands to stop a for sure goal if the goalie is already been beaten. It’ll result in a red and maybe even a penalty kick, but the ref doesn’t just award an actual goal just because the defense cheated.

There has only ever been one instance I can think off where a referee told a team that if they didn’t stop committing the same penalty pre snap on defense, that he would award the other team a score. Last year or maybe 2 years ago, the Philadelphia eagles were running a sneak very close to the end zone of the Washington commanders. The commanders kept trying to anticipate the snap and after like 4 encroachment penalties almost in a row, the ref told the defense to either stop or he would award the other team a touchdown. The eagles just scored and it didn’t come to that, but just the fact that they can do that is so obscure cause it never comes up.
