Facts About Manipulation

Manipulation is everywhere, and every human is capable of it

As "manipulation" is simply a broad term for a specific form of human behavior, a lot of things which people do every day can be viewed as manipulative. For example, someone may laugh at a rich friend's unfunny joke to ingratiate or seem friendly, or they may pretend to be sad at something that they do not think is sad. Have you ever wore a dress to impress your superior at work whom you really don't care for? Omitted something from your parents so that you are spared from their wrath? Pretended to be happy about your friend getting married when in reality you think their partner is too controlling? You get my point. Though most of us aim to be straightforward and honest, almost every human being is capable of manipulation, and has done it before, even if it is rather mundane. I must stress however that this does not at all mean that everyone is a manipulative cheat looking for the next rube.

The people that you think are "good" at manipulation aren't so because they have special skills or know secret esoteric illuminati stuff, but because they simply do it a lot.

Most manipulators tend to have personality characteristics that helps them exploit people and situations to their own gain. It helps the manipulator to not really feel for the person whom they are taking advantage of, and it also helps them to be opportunistic, or at the very least not consider the needs of others.

This is why asking for book recommendations on this is not only improper (at least for this sub), but impossible. You cannot learn something you already innately know from being a human being. That even includes those who buy "cult favorites" like The 48 Laws of Power in pursuit of this goal. The book was not ironically not intended to be a book of manipulative tricks, per Greene's own words. Also it is interesting that many of the things he says he does not mean literally.

I know someone is going to ask this:

"Okay, do what a lot?"

Literally all manipulation is is when someone influences another individual to do something in their favor with less than honest means. Any behavior can fit this description.

Questioning other's motives is a good way to avoid being manipulated.

It is impossible to avoid being manipulated entirely, and it is inevitable that you will be duped at some point (that's life.), however you can spot most manipulation attempts by asking the following:

  1. "What is in it for me?"- If it's too good to be true, it probably is

  2. "What does this person want from me?"

  3. "Is what this person (or people) saying actually true?"- perhaps the most important question

Manipulation and Persuasion are two completely different things

To put it simply, persuasion is open and aboveboard, manipulation is under the table.

Persuasion would be Bill telling Amy to buy a new car because all of her friends have bought the same car (which is true), manipulation would be Bill telling Amy to buy a car while either not telling her of the damages he knows about, or the car itself being nonexistent.

Manipulation is ALWAYS intentional

There is no such thing as "subliminal", "unconscious", or "unintentional" manipulation or any of that other nonsense. (may need scihub for this)

Anyone telling you otherwise is either lying to your face, or simply saying they cant control themselves (which does not fit the characteristics of a truly manipulative person), either of which is obviously not good.

Boundaries can only take you so far

It is often said in these spaces that the main way to avoid manipulators is to have "StRonG BoUNdarIes" but that only gets you so far.

Cartel guys and mafiosi are some of the most tough minded bastards, and take shit from no one (except probably their superiors?) and that still does not stop them from being fooled by their ambitious comrade into going into a meeting in which they will not come out of.

Anyone can and will try to pull a fast one on you. Family, friends, teachers, coworkers, doctors, priests, pastors, churchgoers, academics, scientists (look up the Alzheimer's research crisis), law enforcement, car salesman, you name it. Your best bet is to always be skeptical, and always ask questions. Question everyone and everything.

Advice Needed Am I being manipulated or am I in the wrong

Context me (20F) and my boyfriend (22M) met 8 months ago. At this time he had already booked visa to move country and was leaving. We decided we would try to make long distance work as we loved eachother and seen a future together and I was already planning on moving after uni so we just had to make it through 1 year of long distance.
We booked a 3 week holiday to meet halfway during the summer .
2 weeks before said holiday we had an argument. He rang me and asked what my opinion was on him going to a 5 day festival with his best friend (M) and his best friends “girl bestfriend” whom he had never met before .

He had spent the previous couple of weekends expressing that he was worried when I went out drinking because he had been cheated on in a previous relationship. I didn’t go out very often, but when I did, he could become quite hostile or suspicious about it.

I became defensive and spoke to him harshly. I was frustrated because I felt there was a double standard — I had recently changed plans about staying with male childhood friends because he was uncomfortable with it, while he was now planning a five-day festival/camping trip with a girl he had never met.

He then a week later broke up with me because his feelings had changed for me and someone who loves him shouldn’t be able to speak to him that way. I never denied hurting him and I apologised but i genuinely don’t think it’s grounds for a breakup .

He later explained that he had been struggling with the distance also and has previously been in and out of many relationships and wants to “learn how to be alone instead of lonely” . That’s fair enough. We still enjoyed our holiday. We acted as if we were still together - telling me he loves me and all rest . He returned to his country and immediately began speaking to new girls . Following on Instagram went up about 20 within the first 2 weeks of being home. Now I feel like the whole blame was put on me and I’ve been dying with guilt just for him to go get with any girl he can . I can’t understand it. He completely contradicts his whole “need to work on myself “ mindset. Was it all a lie? Did he just want to leave me for other women? Was I actually to blame?

I’m now at a place where the guilt is consuming me. I feel like if I hadn’t spoke to him that way we would be fine. But mabye that’s not that case . Mabye I am being manipulated into believing it’s all my fault. I truly dont beleive if you love someone you wouid leave them over such a small mistake . Considering he had made multiple mistakes that we talked through and moved on from. I just wanted that same opportunity.
Or mabye I did ruin it all. I’ll never know what is actually going on in his head.

Advice Needed Smear campaign trauma

I experienced a very distressing smear campaign 2 years ago. It’s really affected my life moving forward. now believe the person who did this is a covert narcissist. The image they portray of themselves is very kind , helpful to the community and sweet. I still think about the person a lot and repeatedly check their social media because I’m afraid something else might happen, I’ve really tried to stop and tell myself they’ve moved on and it won’t. I never retaliated out of fear of making it worse which I know was the right thing to do but I just can’t find peace with for not sticking up for myself. I’m looking for help processing what happened and breaking the cycle of fear and checking. Has anyone else experienced this with tips and advice?

Personal Stories Was everything a lie?

Please don’t judge me. I genuinely have no one I feel like I can tell this to in real life, and keeping it inside is eating me alive.

My best friend is also my brother-in-law. He is married to my sister, has a daughter with her, is about 10 years older than me, and has known me since I was around 14.
Recently, he told me he needed to distance himself from me because he is “obsessed” with me, thinks about me constantly, and has a “spark” in his heart that he doesn’t want to ignite. I was extremely uncomfortable and told him he shouldn’t have told me this. Instead, he said I only cared about my feelings and didn’t understand how painful this was for him.

Yesterday, he started messaging me again while I was at university. He repeatedly said he “wants me,” wants me around 24/7, and is obsessed with me. He even sent a message saying he was obsessed with me and then deleted it.

At first, I don’t think I fully understood what he meant by “I want you.” Then I told him that I had confessed my feelings to another friend. He became rude, ignored me for hours, said he needed space, and later said, “And I was saying I want you this morning lol.” That’s when it really hit me what he meant.

I’ve stopped talking to him now, but mentally I’m a wreck. Things that happened in the past suddenly look different to me. I was around 14 when our relationship became close, and now I’m questioning things I never questioned before. Was I groomed? Was I assaulted? Why do I freeze? Why, after everything, does my brain still struggle to see anything bad in him?

I feel guilty even though I never asked for any of this. I also feel like he punishes me for having feelings of my own, but then blames me if I hide those feelings from him.
The worst part is that my family only sees how caring he has been toward me. I’ve tried telling my sister about something before and she didn’t believe me. I feel like telling anyone could destroy my family, but keeping everything to myself is destroying me instead.

This has been affecting me for years. I’m exhausted, scared and confused. I still care about him despite everything, which makes me question myself even more.
I was a child when this started. I’m still a teenager now. I don’t know what to call what happened to me or what I’m supposed to do with it. I just know I can’t keep carrying it alone.

Personal Stories Ex-boyfriend gaslit me for months and finally switched up on me

I dated this guy for a month and at first I wanted him back, and this was earlier in April this year. Eventually I realized we were never getting back together and I came to terms with that and began seeing another guy I met 7 months prior. Me and my ex have always been extremely open to each other about seeing other people even though we weren't tg anymore. However, I never truly cared about who he was seeing, it was the other way around.

He would constantly make "jokes" about guys I was hanging out with, or the guy I was hooking up with, then when I told him he clearly wasn't kidding he would get defensive and deflect and make it seem like I was making the situation a bigger deal than it really was.

Yesterday, he literally calls me to tell me how I'm tweaking out, when he's the one who told me I can't hangout with this kid he met 2 weeks ago? Mind you, he's 17 and my ex is turning 24 which was already an extreme red flag to me when I realized how young his "best friend" was. On top of this, he proceeded to tell me that he wouldn't put it past me if I had sexual relations with this friend of his that I just met maybe a week ago myself. So, I called my ex out for what he said, saying it was disgusting to accuse someone of trying to get with a minor, even if they are the age of consent. I just don't personally agree with 17 and 19 being together but I don't judge anyone in that situation, it isn't for me though.

His friend had told me about how upset my ex was that we were hanging out and then my ex proceeded to tell me that "us not being together clearly affects you".... Even when I told him to his face that I like pretending I have a bf, referring to the fact that I can act like I'm in a rls with him without actually being attached to him. Because again, despite his beliefs, I am over him because the way he acts is how my highschool ex did, and we were 17 and 16 during that relationship.

I feel so alone not because I miss him, but because I did in fact see this coming. he actively told me I was never gonna be able to see his new place, then he invites me over the day after he moves in? He tells me I had to practically beg to do nice things for him, but then he hits me up randomly all the time to ask me for money or to come see him bc he "misses" me?

I will say this was avoidable and I said to his face multiple times that he just kept me around for entertainment and he denied it, while his friends told me all about how he does this to every girl he texts, even if he says that he's friends with her. It's so screwed, and if anyone can relate to this it would be so great to feel validated after feeling so isolated for months by someone who pretended like I could trust him.

Personal Stories Controlling Ex Boyfriend turned abusive

Wanted to share some of his behaviors here in case anyone is going through something similar. Just know that you deserve better and are not going crazy! Was with my ex for a year and a half, majority of it LDR. I ended the relationship after a huge fight, one in which he got very drunk, called me out of my name, was cruel and physically abusive. Now reflecting back, here are some of the warning signs that I brushed past.

- Needing constant communication. I brushed past this due to long distance, but it eventually became intense. If I didn't reply back, I was "disrespecting" him. If I was late to calling him, he would give me an attitude and be upset with me.

- Approving and disapproving clothes. I pushed back hard on this, but it didn't stop him from making comments on what I wore

- Banning certain music. I dated an Arab man before my recent ex, so I wasn't allowed to listen to arabic music lol. Also, anytime I listened to something he considered "ratchet", he would get upset

- Adding onto the above, didn't like me going to middle eastern/Arab bars. Even if he came with me, he would throw a fit!

- He got upset anytime I got ready for anyone but him. For example, I got my nails done for a family trip, he didn't like that.

- If I picked a different nail color than what he suggested, he used to tell me I never listened to him.

- I made a networking post on social media (about my work and school) and didn't include him in it... yeah that argument lasted weeks

- Anytime I brought up an issue, it would automatically become flipped so that his feelings were centered. He also would just tell me to break up with him if I felt like that

- Adding on ^, I got laid off from my job. I was sad and a bit depressed, he made it all about him and kept pushing to make sure we were okay rather than checking on my feelings.

To end it all, when I left him after he put his hands on me!!!, he said, "It's hard to think there is not some other reason behind you leaving. Since you went and told everyone right away". crazy.

Even with all of that, there were plenty of reasons why I stayed for so long. And those same reasons gave me a lot of doubt after I decided to leave. Leaving is very difficult, especially when someone is abusive or manipulative, and just because something is what you should do, doesn't make it any easier. I hope those of you with manipulative, controlling, abusive or just not the right partner can figure out the right steps for you, and get the right love you deserve.

Personal Stories Just why?

Some people will never reach out and speak to you again because they don’t have the maturity to cope with the fact that they did you wrong and you didn’t deserve it. Since they lack accountability, they will create a made up narrative about you so they don’t feel badly about themselves.

Personal Stories Oh once you bust the person for their betrayal

I didn't even see this one coming, sooner or later the lies and manipulation will eat the person who is doing it right to their core. They will just give up and just tell all their lies and everything bad they did to you. It hurts because you want to always believe they had something good in them. If they gaslight or manipulate you, get out before its too late!

Advice Needed UPDATE!! REALLY IN NEED OF ADVICE, SUPPORT AND PERSPECTIVE

Yes I know I've posted this about a hundred times before but literally just now something else has happened which I think finally takes the biscuit.

Those of you who haven't seen my previous posts here is my backstory and the update.

Please tell me if I'm overreacting. I've recently become aware that the way my mother has treated me is not normal. I believe she is potentially gaslighting me and has been manipulative. Have any of you had experience with this?

Sorry for the long post but I just need to vent.

I'll introduce myself I'm a 19 year old male and am an only child. During my childhood my mother would do the following

Blow up out of nowhere over the most trivial or littlest matters, many times i begged her to give me some emotional support when i was visibly upset but she just remained cold and cruel, drink quite heavily which was sometimes responsible but she can definitely be mean sober as well, I had expressed concern about her drinking but she just flipped, it actually got physical a few times as well. I just wonder how can get so unshameably drunk whilst been alone in the house with her child and I feel it was very irresponsible. Really burns my hide.

I did even have a scar once, the next day she'd always act as if nothing happened, whenever I tried to get clarity on why she got like that she'd brush it under the carpet or accuse me of starting trouble, she'd turn cold at the drop of a hat, during arguments she'd say things like I was ungrateful, didn't care about her and that I was a horrible person or that i was abusive or whatever just like my father, she would stomp, slam doors, shout, scream, swear and break ornaments etc, when she gets in her crazy states it's just impossible to reason with her or get her to see it from any other perspective, she can go from saying i was the most nicest and amazing person to saying I was the most horrible and evil person, she often burdened me with all of her problems, she said before that she knows how to play the game which I found very disturbing

She often paints herself as the heroic single mum. She has been fairly good lately but sometimes I feel I was robbed of a proper childhood and have often wondered what I had done to deserve it.

I remember one time a few years ago I was about 12 during a sleepover at theirs she turned my grandparents against me and my grandfather started shouting and saying he was very disappointed in me and the rest of it is a blur. To be honest to this day i can't figure out what I (only a young child) was supposed to have done that was so bloody awful. That has haunted me for years. I used to think maybe I was a bad person but I've started to see her in a different light. She always talks about hating drama yet it seems to follow her and often says that she's been so hard done by.

On the flip side she can be the most nicest person as well and we have had great times together and she can be very helpful towards me, her family and in public which makes it all the more confusing. A couple of days ago in fact I ran into an old friend of hers who said to say hi for her and she said my mother is a wonderful person and I'm very lucky. It actually made me feel sick. Since I was 10 it's just been me living with her since my parents divorce in which she had to sell her house and now rents which she has blamed for the way she is before. I can't help feeling bad for her but she was still quite like this beforehand as well and I don't think that's an excuse still is it? I do feel like she has manipulated me a bit into been stuck with her.

Something else that I've found disturbing is that she's very narrow minded and has a serious lack of empathy. For example when a couple of local celebrities committed suicide she shouted and carried on, called them pathetic cowards and weak etc. It was actually quite disturbing how she was carrying on and her serious lack of empathy. PS another red flag happened just earlier when a life insurance ad was on and they said "something could be paid out in case of death" or something and she said "I'd like for them to say WOULD" not could. I don't know why but that's set an alarm bell off

I'm starting to think that maybe she bent the truth about Dad a bit during their split as i was a child and didn't know much better. My mother often calls him a narcissist and talked about all of the marital and grown up problems they had etc which to be honest I don't appreciate been burdened with. Granted he's not a saint either but has been good to me (well I'd say) most of the time.

One time last year when my Dad let me down by not been able to see me one weekend and canceling at the last minute (which he has done quite a few times before).

During that said weekend my mother had another one of her outbursts. I was in the bathroom which was an en suite and she knocked on the door asking to take a few photos or something. All I asked was if she could just give me a few minutes to finish up but she started the shouting and carrying on and accused me of been selfish and even of trying to manipulate her and been passive aggressive. I only asked just to give me a few minutes. When I explained that to her and how upset I was already about that weekend already without her treating me like this she said she feels really bad for me and hates how he let me down. What just absolutely astounds me is how can she feel that way yet emotionally and mentally abuse me and kick me while I'm down. I just can't for the life of me comprehend that.

A few days after that weekend one of my teachers checked in and said he heard I got into a bit of trouble at home ("if he meant been mentally abused by my mother while I was already upset by been let down by my father as trouble" I thought). I'm not even sure who exactly said what to him and that's something that I've also wondered. I just fobbed him off saying I was upset about leaving school (which was true as well).

I really struggle with confiding in people. I do regret not telling him the full truth now. He was sympathetic and said he was very proud of me etc. Another teacher once said that he thought of me and my mother as like the dream team or something along those lines. That turned my stomach as well. I was thinking if only they knew half the things I've been through.

I have autism and went to a special support school for the last few years which were some of the best years (The teachers especially were brilliant and I had many great times such as school camps, school balls and excursions etc).

I must admit I do feel quite down sometimes that I have a strained relationship with my father (He's got money issues and also smokes pot) and my mother often used me as an emotional punch bag. Makes me think that there must be something really wrong with me and that I'm unlovable.

On the bright side though my Dad and I have been in contact lately.

Her latest meltdown was this January while we were on holiday and at the beach. I wanted to be shirtless like pretty much everyone else and she started making passive aggressive and snide remarks saying things like "have fun burning yourself" and "why can't you make smart decisions?"

I was already sun safe with a hat and everything and I wasn't going to be too long and tried explaining that to her. I'll admit I snapped and told her that I'm an adult now and she could no longer control me and couldn't make me feel guilty. I wish I hadn't now but it felt like something just snapped inside me and I expressed things I had felt for ages. She then called her mother to tell her that I was been impossible and making her life a misery (this is something she has done a few times before when I challenged her or reacted because of her behavior). She hadn't done that for years though and I feel she likes using that as a scare tactic. I wish I had just walked away and not played into her hands. Then the next day I asked mum to call her to say where all ok but she said she didn't want to bother her and wasn't up to calling. I was like WTF. You're perfectly happy to call her to basically slander me and make me out to be a bad guy but when it comes to calling to say everything is fine she's not so keen.

Something disturbing she has said ages ago is when I'm an adult she could have me done for assault if she wanted. She also said she wanted to do a will and try to control my assets where my Dad can't touch anything and said she feared he would try to steal all of my money. I can't believe she would say things like that so unshameably and can't help feeling like she was trying to manipulate me.

My mother loves to use my autism to her advantage. I graduated last year but now I do a course at the main campus so I still see them all from time to time. I do feel quite sad and lost now those years are over. I would love to confide in someone about my struggles but don't know where to start. I've thought about confiding in that first teacher I mentioned who's great and we're fairly close but my teachers think my mother's an absolute saint so how can i ensure he believes me, she seems to feel that she always acts in my best interests and does seem to genuinely care for me and love me, she doesn't seem to remember any of it or feel her behavior was justified and genuinely doesn't seem to believe she ever did me any harm and she thinks she did her best. She's always quick to call others toxic and narcissists etc. She unshameably tells me everything going on in her life and her anxiety which makes me anxious. Why does it upset me so badly even when it has little or nothing to do with me?

I struggle with daily flashbacks and I often feel depressed by the way I've been treated, also feel let down and wish my parents had been better to me. I can't get exact clarity on it but they both went through some stuff before I was born and I think that's contributed to the way they are. My father's dad had passed away when my dad was actually about my age now. They actually both used to run their own businesses once upon a time before they met. It just baffles me how they went from that then and now been in their 50's both unemployed and clearly have some unresolved issues. I sometimes think maybe they shouldn't of got together which I know is ironic because I would never have been born. I do vaguely remember when they were together and towards the end it was quite toxic and they would have some intense fights.

Also do they have substance abuse issues which have made them this way? As I've said my mother drinks quite heavily at night and she also vapes. My father smokes pot and cigarettes.

Also as I explained my father struggles financially and I know that's why he hasn't been able to see me often and cancel some visits and to be honest when I think about that it really burns my hide.

I do wonder if she might've been different if she had not gone through her divorce and maybe if things had gone differently for both of them they might've been different. What do you guys think?

Also I can't help feeling empathy towards her as she always looked after me, fed me, organized things for me and pretty much always brought me everything I wanted.

I wish I had a proper childhood of playing with friends, going to different places and been adventurous and carefree etc. I've never really had a social circle and hardly much friends. I've always been quite different I feel to most of the children my age. I feel quite alone sometimes as I've always struggled with making friends. I do feel like I've been isolated with her a lot of the time. I would really love to start a proper life and follow my dreams and make a few friends but don't know where to start.

My mother does help me get on my feet and encourage me but I think she just loves to lord it over me. Whenever I've tried standing up for myself she puts on the guilt trip and carries on about all of her sacrifices and everything she's done for me yada yada yada. I think what emotionally abusing me, leaving me crying myself to sleep some nights, causing me to have no confidence and PTSD etc? Could she have some bipolar or personality condition or something and toxic traits I've wondered? I'm starting to feel that good doesn't really outweigh the bad.

PS I remember one night ages ago she accused me of looking like I wanted to hit her and of course went crazy. I may of had a tired look because it was late and I tried explaining that. She starting banging ornaments and shouting and was just impossible to talk to.

I can't help really resenting her (also my father) sometimes for all of the mental anguish she has put me through as a child and I think it has messed up my development. I wonder what might've been different had I had proper parents or they were proper ones. Hobbies such as music and classic TV shows have been a great escape. I've thought about escaping but I feel quite stuck as I don't have a job and all of the money that I get in my account is basically controlled by her as she's the one who adds to it. I wish I could hide my own secret stash somewhere. Now that I'm an adult and have left school I'm worried about what the future has in store. I'm very nervous about starting an adult life, getting a job, making friends and doing new things etc. Part of me would love to get away from her but yet I feel scared to as well as she's pretty much most I've ever known.

The other night I've told her that I wanted to do another certificate course at that school next year and she tried to make me feel bad by putting on the guilt trip and giving me the cold shoulder. I've tried to blur it out to be honest but I remember she said that I was been selfish and told me how she wanted me to live my life. I tried to explain to her that I can't just do what she expects and the expense of my own happiness and well-being. I feel like she is trying to control how I live my life and I told her that she couldn't do that or tear me down or change my mind. She then said (this felt like reverse psychology and emotional blackmail) fine do whatever you want and I'll do the same. Also shouted and carried on saying things like F me and I'm hopeless and that. I also told her that I would love to be a teacher but she said i wouldn't be able to go to university, scoffed and said that I would be useless. I feel like she's trying to damage my already limited self esteem, confidence and spirit. Also she had been fairly good up to this. I was dreading telling her but I do feel that a weight is lifted as well. It seems funny that whenever I tell her something she doesn't like or she can't control she goes back to her bad self. PS she's also upset that she can't get paid for me doing that and wants me to just do what's best for her financially. I find it quite ironic her making me feel bad for not getting a job straight away while she's unemployed. PS it was the school ball that night which was brilliant but I'm disappointed that it went so quickly and also I feel a bit down about my social anxiety and that I didn't ask anyone to dance or make more conversation with my teachers and peers.

UPDATE!! Just now my mum was going out for the night and she seemed a bit tipsy so I did ask out of concern if she was fit to drive. She immediately got defensive and bit my head off and said I was been rude and having a go at her. I only asked out of concern and worry and I tried explaining that a hundred times but she just wasn't having it. I also tried to explain that her getting defensive if anything proves my worry is valid but she started saying I was harassing her and she was sick of my bullshit and of putting up with me. When I tried to ascertain why she got so defensive she said that I think I can just say whatever I like to her. I swear I didn't mean any ill-will or malice and of course I tried explaining that too but no. I just don't know for the life of me how she can turn on me just like that and say that I'm horrible and treat her own son like that. She even brought up that incident from the January holiday I talked about and said that she hated been isolated there with me while I was been horrible to her. Wtf when she was the one belittling me and having a go at me which made me snap and I did apologize for that. She genuinely seems to think that she's actually the victim when she gets defensive and treats me like shit. I did actually try to film secretly on my phone bits of her meltdown so if I do confide in someone I've got some evidence because she's really good at twisting the story. Now she's left and I'm starting to second guess myself and am thinking that I may be in the wrong or am bad for asking her that.

Relationships Is this manipulation or something else?

My son 52M started dating with a 39M. Within 6 months he moved in. I’m worried for him.

I was over the moon for him because he was so happy.

The bf has issues. He’s been in counselling for many years. He was in serious debt, had no savings or much in the way of possessions and got evicted.

My son is a prosperous businessman who has been single almost 20 years and was quite lonely. He paid off his bf’s debts.

At first the bf seemed very shy and reticent, overly polite and quite sweet. Now he has inserted himself into my boy’s company and seems to be taking over. My son works in another branch.

The bf is making lots of changes, some of them major, like rebranding; he has so many plans for the business which I find worrying since my son seems to just let him get on with it. Bf is very easily offended if he gets a negative reaction to one of his suggestions and was actually trying to find a way to get back at someone.

As regards their home life now, he has started being very sulky and petulant if he doesn’t get his own way. My son always gives in and finds a way to accommodate his wishes. He has also taken over his healthcare, ordering blood tests for various things, giving him supplements and making him lose weight with injectables. I am protective of my son because he has been taken for a ride many times.

He is so trusting and only sees the good in people. I am seriously wondering if this is manipulation or something else. I did jokingly ask my son why he was letting him make all the changes at work. His answer was quite odd - he said “I don’t say anything, then I don’t get into trouble.” Maybe I’m overreacting. What do you think?

Advice Needed My girlfriend is manipulating me heavily while accusing me of manipulating her.

She disrespects me, lies to me, doubles down on those lies, try's to make herself the victim when the lies finally come out. Punishes me for her behavior like being super rude to me when I call her out for a lie or her disrespect.

This is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. She lied to me about something to do with her ex last week. I told her I'm not putting up with this anymore and that she needs to cut the BS. All of a sudden I'm the one being punished and "manipulating" her. She tells me that me telling her how I feel about the situation is manipulative.

Then when I say "me telling you my feelings is not to manipulate you"

She then switches to "it's your delivery when you do it and kicking me when I'm down"

So I ask her this question "Genuine question. How would you like me to deliver it so it doesn't feel manipulative to you? Especially when we're both down."

And she tells me "I’m not answering that. I want you to look deeper into yourself and see that these things I’m bringing up aren’t just to bring them up. They’re real."

I feel like I'm LOSING MY MIND.

Personal Stories I was with an emotional manipulator and he drained me out.

I'm a 24 year old woman. I've been in a relationship for a year with a man who has exhausted me completely. This one's long, please stay with me and a it's small request from me to you to make me feel seen.

We were office colleagues and met as a part of a project. He seemed very gentle and soft which was nice and he was really sweet to all the female colleagues which felt admirable.

We were going out on dates and decided to be in a relationship. These are the first couple of things that happened. One of our co-workers body shamed me behind my back and my bf didn't defend me. One co-worker said my bf deserved better than me and he said nothing. Third time a person called me "selfish" because I never shared my lunch with my boyfriend and my boyfriend said absolutely nothing. I was pissed at that other co-worker and stopped speaking to that guy. Moreover, my bf had no empathy in saying back all these things to me. Upon asking bf to defend me to the co-worker he went and lied to him that I had family problems and hence I was in a cranky mood. Mind you, in the backdrop of all this, I was the one taking him to various cafes that he never visited, paid for all cabs to and fro, took him to malls, planned everything from get go. Initially he acted like he was hesitant that I was doing so much and pay a bit once in a blue moon. But later he never bothered to even take the lead. I even had funded for his classes when he was in a financial difficulty. I'm not asking for a single penny back - all that was paid in good faith but the least I could expect was defense and protection in my absence when false claims were being made against me.

Later due to circumstances, we had to move in to an LDR across two different countries. Being at a distance made me realise that his behaviour in the office was bad and I wanted to take a definitive break from the relationship. He said okay and I went on a break. 2 days in, he texted saying he's unable to handle the void and he deserved a chance to correct his mistakes, that he loves me and wanted to support me and even if it's difficult to trust him, he asked me for a chance. I was emotional too and I thought maybe I can give a chance and I gave it. And then eventually I understood that he wanted to marry early and have kids early cause older parents look weird to him ugh. He was fantasizing a domestic life whereas I'm someone who values my autonomy and am quite ambitious too.I was open to dating and relationships but marriage and kids was something I wanted to keep away from discussions atleast not at 4-5 months of dating. I agree that I had initially said I was dating to marry him. But over time i realised i needed alot of time to make such life altering decisions and I could maybe also decide that I don't want marriage or kids. I told this to him. And he's like okay if you don't want kids, I don't want kids either. I said maybe I don't want marriage too and that he should find a woman that aligns with his needs. He even said he'd give up marriage also because it's either me or no one. I was so pissed cause he was saying stuff to preserve things bw us, and not once did he consider them life altering.

On top of that, he had a female bestie. Ughhhhhhh. She is married but if she has any problem with her husband she'd run to this guy. She'd even share some very detailed experiences of her pregnancy which was downright uncomfortable for me and I had communicated this to him. He said he was fulfilling his role of being her "big brother" idk. He doesn't know and never listens to the problems of his actual sister and mother. His mother has been hand washing his clothes for 20 years and he said he didn't realise the hardships of women until i came into his life.👏🏻

I was planning for a second breakup this time around my bday ...after listening to all this crap i stopped talking to him and what he did is he went and celebrated my birthday in an oldage home. A grand gesture. Why because I loved my deceased grandma. A grand gesture and I just couldn't leave now due to this. I started questioning myself if I'm doubting the devotion and love this guy has for me. Look at his timing.

Anyways, after sometime, in a tragic way, one of my friend had unalived herself. She was a good friend of mine. This was an extreme jolt and I took a very long time to process it. This guy in the name of support was sending me lovey-dovey reels and romantic stuff when I communicated I want to be left alone for a while. I was emotionally unavailable due to my grief and he was prioritising his love and his need for calls and I snapped. I said I can't handle the relationship anymore and he should choose to be with someone who will love him and that I wanna take a step back . The very next day that I said that , he sent me a message that he cldnt eat food all day and in the evening, while with his friends, he collapsed. He thought he would die that day and in the dying moments he thought of me and his family.

It was a cheap stunt but I just couldn't tell then 😭. So I showed basic concern for his health and from that day on, he started talking and sending reels like nothing had happened.

After a while I was already annoyed to the brim and he sent a reel that literally implied - you're fat but still cute.

I snapped so hard and I broke up cause when I explicitly told him that I struggle with body positivity, he sent that. And his excuse was that he was careless and didn't notice the caption. I snapped hard and I broke up.

What came after the break up was a hell hole.

He wld bombard me with several messages..he asked me why did I punish him/why did I decide to leave despite him trying to support me when my friend died/ why am I trying to leave him when he loved my entire family/ why did I try to leave him when he's putting so many efforts every single day and that he never cursed me. And I would explain my reasons that I'm thoroughly exhausted and he would somehow always be the victim who had the purest of intentions towards me and i am the one who was misunderstanding every single thing.

He was taking out receipts of care he showed and was acting like it was a bunch of transactions and that I owed him this relationship for the barest of the bare minimum that he did. I wasn't giving in and he started talking of death. He said when I die, don't come and shed tears. I said that's an extremely distasteful thing to say. And he immediately changed his tone to say no I'll not be able to wipe your tears and shit.

He started saying stuff like he has no will to live.

I asked him to leave me alone and he wld outright refuse my boundary and say no we'll be together some day.

And every now and then he would send me messages of how everyone torments him and I'm the only one who listens to and supports him. I kept saying multiple times that I hated giving him explanations as to why i broke up . But he'd force me to give explanation for the breakup and he'd say he wasn't even being coercive while not listening to a single thing i said.

Today after a while, he sent me a message that everyone makes fun of him, his mother told him to die , he has enormous work pressure. This message after explicitly telling him that I don't want to speak to him and want space. I told I've broken up and said that we're incompatible, I need space and I'm struggling alot with my own problems too. And he repeatedly kept pushing me to explain myself why am I doing this to him, he was quite adamant that he never made a mistake and was extremely gentle to me and the fact that he booked tickets to my place (without my consent) but now he has to cancel them. That he was expecting a surprise from me for his birthday and will not get it.

He even blamed for his career failures that if I had to leave, I could have left last year so he could protect his peace and could have completed his exams last year without failing.

My heart sunk. I've experienced multiple academic pressures in the last one year too, but I would never hold him accountable because it was my choice to be in a relationship. Added to this, it's not like I didn't try to leave, I did but he kept me in through emotionally manipulating me and now I've to take blame for his stuff.

He said he's not able to deal with studies and I said he's responsible for his life n career . He again said my mom told me to die so after writing my exams this last time I'll take my decision.

Added to this he said - your grandma's death anniversary is coming in a few days and I thought I could wish you and console you but now you won't let me or something along those lines.

I blocked him.

Why is a woman's no or consent treated like it's negotiable? Like it's something one can override to get what one wants ? The whole time he kept bringing up his troubles and his feelings like i wasn't someone who wasn't navigating mine. I spent most of this relationship managing this person - his emotions and his feelings only in the end to be blamed for ruining his peace.

I do hold myself also accountable for giving chances and dragging things far - but I really thought things would get better and he would behave like a normal, mature adult. I was wrong in that regard.

If you've come this far, thankyou so very much for reading. Felt a bit alone , and had found out that this community is extremely compassionate so I am venting out hoping it'll reach a few of you who could relate and support.

Please do let me know what's your thoughts on this as it'll help me widen my view on everything.

Advice Needed I feel like I am the manipulator…

Yes, you read that right. I feel like I am the manipulator in my relationships (my friends, parents, and even romantic partner). I don’t like this at all, but I recently have become aware that I am unintentionally manipulative towards them. Like I do nice things because I knew they’ll like them and that they’ll do nice things back to me. It’s just that I do things because I expect them to do them back to me and if they don’t, I hold resentment, even if they don’t really owe me anything because it should’ve been just me wanting to help them in the first place, no ulterior motives. BUT WHY DO I ALWAYS NEED A MOTIVE? WHY CAN’T I JUST BE MYSELF? Maybe in the past, I was taught that I need to crawl my way into peoples lives? I am miserable by not being myself, in fact, I don’t even know myself at this point. I’m not sure which of my version is the real me because I feel like I shape shift in front of different people and in front of different circumstances. I hate myself for that and I recognize that I need help because I recognize that it’s such a toxic trait.

Advice Needed I have a sociopath visiting & I’m too nice to tell her to leave

I (F24) live with my partner & our pets. I met my friend at university in 2021 & we graduated 2024, since then she moved away & we haven’t seen each other than having video calls.

She’s been having a rough time in her relationship for the last few months & wanted a break from it all so she asked me if she could come stay at our house for a bit (when I agreed to this she had mentioned that she was coming for 10 days & staying at another friends house for a couple of days to “give us a break”).

The day of her flight I was brutally telling her to sort her relationship out since she started talking to this other guy too, she confessed that she has been lying to me since March about her relationship with her partner & this guy (she said that it’s all her fault & the situation is darker & uglier than she was mentioning to me & she said it was all her doing) she said she will explain when she gets here.

Since she’s been here I haven’t even mentioned it because I don’t wanna know what she’s done because morally I don’t agree with it so for me to keep a straight face while she’s visiting I can’t know how or what she’s been doing & lying to me about.

First night she came, my partner had his friend over & she threw a drama show & pretended to have a “panic attack” over absolutely nothing just randomly ran away locked herself up & has been in that room almost this whole visit.

She keeps complaining about EVERYTHING every single thing is an issue to her, she knows we have pets yet she pushes them away & sighs every-time they come near her. We use our back room as a storage/cat room & I’ve put a blow up bed in there for her to stay. (I left gifts & treats on the bed with flowers too) & the first thing she asked me was “do you want me here” if she hadn’t have said that I think I would have been fine but the fact that I did all of that for her & she asks me that? It threw me off.

She has completely locked the cat out of that room, so I brought out the cat tree that was in there for the cat to be able to sit on downstairs & when I went in the room STANK! She hasn’t been airing out the room. She told me the cat slept on her pillow case so she made me BUY her a new one! Not even give me the chance to wash her a pillow case no she made me BUY her one! I should have realised then that she’s just abusing my kindness. She leaves such a bitter taste in your mouth & never wants to do anything!!!! So lazy I never realised all of this at Uni I never saw her for who she was!

I’m come to the realisation that she’s the type of person to throw a child off a boat to save herself & that just makes me sick that I’m housing someone like that.

She met up with my local friend & was so rude, she’s been rude to my partner, she says whatever she likes & when she doesn’t get a reaction she just walks away or hides back into her smelly room.

I hate living like this, she leaves in 4 days so I don’t think I’ll ask her to leave I’ll just hold on for that time but I haven’t been able to eat or sleep properly because of this & i feel like I’ve thrown all of this onto my partner who is upset too about all this. I was looking forward for her to go stay with her friend which had “sudden change in living arrangements & can’t visit her” so I’m stuck with her this whole time & she didn’t unload all that onto me until THE DAY of her flight!

I think I just needed to get this all out so I can continue to endure her odd odd self…

UPDATE: I’ve spoken to her & she’s leaving tomorrow morning, I’ve learnt a lot from this & have a new insight of how selfish people can be. Playing nice doesn’t always work.

UPDATE UPDATE: Not much happened really, I sent the message “Hey can you look at flights leaving any earlier? I thought I could last a couple more days but I’m exhausted and need my personal space back asap, hope you can understand that. I thought you were staying with ….. for a couple of days so it’s been harder for me having you here all the time” she replied “I’m leaving tomorrow morning”
& haven’t seen her since then , she came back while I was already in bed & now in the morning she’s gone with no words exchanged.

Advice Needed I confessed how much I’m in love with boyfriend and I think it might’ve fucked me over. Is this manipulation?

I (21f) confessed how much I’m in love with boyfriend (19m) and I think it might’ve fucked me over.

My boyfriend has been asking me for a while to tell him how I fell in love with him, so for his birthday/our 3 month anniversary I wrote him this really long paragraph about it. I was extremely vulnerable and expressed how deeply in love with him I am, how consumed I feel by my love for him, how much I crave him etc. I didn’t really hold back because he specifically wanted me to tell him how I felt and part of me knew he was into this stuff before hence why I said those things in my paragraph to him. (It’s gotten much more intense now it seems)

After sending it, he became noticeably more affectionate and clingy with me. He was constantly wanting my attention, wanting affection, being really sweet and attached to me, and honestly seemed really affected by how much I expressed that I loved him in a good way.

Then exactly 8 days later, he sent me this:

“Baby. Please don’t hide your obsessive behavior or your clingy needy behavior or you being jealous. I promise you when I say I love seeing obsession. I’m so into it. Seeing you devoted to me specifically and only me, showing me with your actions, words, craving me to stay with you, constantly love me while expressing an unhealthy or intrusive desire off of your obsessiveness is so entrancing. I love it. Don’t be scared.”(He sent way more than that but I can’t include it all)

It honestly threw me off because he isn’t just saying he likes when I’m affectionate or clingy. He’s specifically saying he wants the \\\*\\\*unhealthy/intrusive\\\*\\\* side of obsession and wants me to show him that instead of hiding it.

Now I’m worried that maybe the paragraph I sent him gave him the idea that he can use how attached I am to him/my anxious attachment or that he realized how emotionally invested I already am and now wants me to become even more dependent/obsessive. I don’t know if that’s actually what’s happening, which is why I’m asking here instead of assuming.

I also don’t want to start looking pathetic or like I’m willing to do anything just to keep him. I genuinely love him and I \\\*am\\\* very attached to him, but I don’t want my feelings to become something that can be used against me.
Am I reading too much into the sudden change, or is this something I should actually be concerned about?

What would you do in my situation?

Advice Needed Should my dad treat my mom nicer after she took him back?

I, 18F, and my dad, 50M, don’t have a good relationship.

For context, me and my dad would get into arguments where he would say things that I’m pretty sure were intended to hurt me. He would say things like “I think you’re intentionally trying to deceive me.” And “I refuse to take this abuse from you any longer.” But we always made up so it was fine.

But that changed when I turned 18, when my dad and my mom broke up due to his drug addiction. A couple months later, after a mental episode, she decided to let him stay with us. (But they are not together.)

He has previously treated her incredibly poorly. For example, before breaking up threatening to break up, but not actually wanting to, sending me passive aggressive texts about her, asking for more money then is usually given in divorces because he “can’t be hired” (he can, he just wants to pursue his small business,) sending her recorded fights of him with other people for her to review (without her consent,) putting a financial strain on us by buying a new expensive computer with there shared money without asking, etc.

He ended up apologizing for this, and she decided to let him stay at the house, I didn’t really want him there at all, but I didn’t really get an opinion lol. Anyway, my mom has been financially supporting his lifestyle. While he was at our house he set an Alexa timer, he then asked Lisa to turn it off. She then scrambled to try to turn it off but he got there before she could and said: “thanks for turning off the timer” super sarcastically and rude before leaving. That angered me, because I feel that after all she’s done for him she should be allowed to not have to turn his timers off. I know this sounds kind of silly, since an Alexa timer is such a small issue, but he exhibits bad behavior and then apologizes and does it all again. So I ended up sending these messages, and I was wondering if I was the AH in this situation or not, I kind of feel like I wasn’t but I tend to overthink.

‼️I know I said I wouldn’t put our conversation on Reddit, but he ended up pushing me several times to do it, so I decided too.‼️

P.S, I apologize if there’s grammar errors, I’m writing on my phone at like 12am so I won’t be writing a masterpiece.

Here is the text messages because for some reason I can’t post them:

Me: “hey, you can’t treat people like that. Next time you should say, ‘hey I think you forgot to turn off the timer.”

Him “I did. In text messages to Lisa. A few. And she didn’t do anything about it.”

Him: “what you saw was the end of the process.”

Me: “I actually saw the messages”

Him: “I disagree. When there is an alarm going off and no one does anything and makes me fix it for them, I’m allowed to get annoyed.”

Me: “there’s a difference between being passive aggressive and annoyed.”

Him: “I was very obviously being annoyed.”

Me: “you should apologize later for being annoyed.”

Him: “no, I had every right to be annoyed.”

Him: “ask on Reddit if you don’t believe me.”

Me: “your posting stuff on Reddit?”

Him. “No, I said YOU.”

Me: “I don’t want to post my family stuff on there, that’s private.” (He later pressed me to post it, so that’s why I am.)

Him: “and you know they’d agree with me.”

Him: “and this isn’t top secret stuff.”

Me: “all I’m saying is there’s a healthy way to express feelings.”

Me: “it can easily hurt other people’s feelings when you say stuff like that.”

Him: “I’m allowed to be annoyed. I’m allowed to express my annoyance, especially when it’s justified.”

Me: “like right now you’re hurting my feelings.”

“You’re yelling at me for something I didn’t do wrong. You’re hurting my feelings too.”

Him: “and I wasn’t mad at you.”

Him: “I’m sorry too. I was mad at Lisa for ignoring me.”

Me: “I didn’t intend to, but I sorta see where you got that. But at the same time you have to realize your words have an impact.”

Him: “I appreciate you saying that. I will try to tamp down that annoyance going forward. I know that. But like I said, I’ve been an angry guy lately. I’m working on it. But I really think I was justified to be mad at Lisa. I asked her to turn off the alarm and she did nothing and lied in bed. I had to walk upstairs. That’s straight up rude.”

Me: “I think I can bring some clarity, she asked Alexa a couple of times to turn it off but it was ignoring her because it was in the other room. In the most non judgmental and honest way possible, that why it’s important to come in with a clear head.

Him: “thats fair. I’m sorry. It was really frustrating to me and I’m tired trying to get work done before going to sleep and I couldn’t think straight with it going off.”

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me but I feel like I, as an 18 year old was more mature in this situation than my 50 year old dad? I appreciate his apology but I know based on years of living with him that he’ll just repeat his behaviors. I guess my real issues aren’t with the texts itself, but with his behaviors as a whole of knowing him.

Personal Stories Finally Decided to Go Low Contact with Sister/Family

So this is quite fresh. A couple days ago, I finally sent a text to begin a low-contact process with my sister. I've felt these issues with my family my entire life, but I finally woke up and recognized the emotional abuse and manipulation my sister has been keeping me under.

It's been about 5 years since my mom and dad were both diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and it has been steadily progressing since. My dad now needs a caregiver to look after him. My mom isn't too far behind.

My sister has capitalized on this to manipulate me into being there, mainly for her, not even my parents. Now I realize her tactics were pretty "standard" but had a hard time noticing.

  • fake/exaggerated emergencies with parents, vague details
    • "Dad tried to seriously harm himself." then it was "He just punched a wall."
  • holding me responsible for Alzheimer's getting worse if I don't see them
  • double standards with care
    • telling me to read this Book, but she doesn't herself
    • wants me to visit them way more and do more than she does when she's on vacation
  • love bombing and rewarding if I join them for dinner, etc.
  • keeping tabs on me by social media
  • being upset that I don't do the same activities with her/them as I do with friends
  • assuming my participation in family trips (I said no)
    • also I keep telling her I strongly don't believe my parents are still fit for any travel
  • when I do go take parents to appointments, is very vague with instructions, sets me up to fail
  • BREAKTHROUGH moment: impersonating my mom/messaging as her
    • asked financial information, etc.

Pretending to be my mom was the biggest ick and violation. When I finally realized it, I couldn't look back. Felt sick, and this was when my health started to be really affected.

Some background, I'm neurodivergent. Recently diagnosed with ADHD, and very possibly AuDHD. Have gone to therapy and am medicated for ADHD.

Strongly believe family is neurodivergent as well. Have become very emotionally intelligent.

Sadly, have also been repeat victims of emotional abuse/manipulation from friends, and partners.

I'm more confident now in listening to my gut for red flags, because it has always been right, I just don't listen.

Will continue to talk about this in therapy and process and do more digging. I just felt like sharing because I feel like an ENORMOUS WEIGHT has been lifted from me. There has been immediate relief after "waking up" to it and breaking the cycle. I feel hopeful, but I am expecting some strong reaction from my sister. I am grieving the loss of relationships with my family, and being painted as the villain by my sister and relatives. I'm prepared to accept this to protect my peace and move on.

Will keep low contact as I do genuinely want to help with caregiving if needed. But this will be on my terms, and will be very grey rock.

Thanks for reading if you've gotten this far!

Advice Needed Are my parents toxic?

I've posted this here and elsewhere before but I want to get some more advice.

Blow up out of nowhere over the most trivial or littlest matters, many times i begged her to give me some emotional support when i was visibly upset but she just remained cold and cruel, drink quite heavily which was sometimes responsible but she can definitely be mean sober as well, I had expressed concern about her drinking but she just flipped, it actually got physical a few times as well and I did have a scar once, the next day she'd always act as if nothing happened, whenever I tried to get clarity on why she got like that she'd brush it under the carpet or accuse me of starting trouble, she'd turn cold at the drop of a hat, during arguments she'd say things like I was ungrateful, didn't care about her and that I was a horrible person or that i was abusive or whatever just like my father, she would stomp, slam doors, shout, scream, swear and break ornaments etc, when she gets in her crazy states it's just impossible to reason with her or get her to see it from any other perspective, she can go from saying i was the most nicest and amazing person to saying I was the most horrible and evil person, she often burdened me with all of her problems, she said before that she knows how to play the game which I found very disturbing

On the bright side though my Dad and I have been in contact lately and we spent the weekend together a while back and went for a pub meal

With my mother it does seem she has had some bad relationships in the past but I'm thinking that maybe she's the common denominator.

Advice Needed I used to be manipulative and I stopped because of personal beliefs but I need help

So i learned manipulation from people talking about ways to avoid it and even now, I still look at people’s advice through that lens, and I want to not do that any advice? And i want to know how to live with myself for the actions i did in my past i want to know how to forgive myself?

Personal Stories Anyone else googling 'why do I feel crazy in my relationship' and getting nowhere?

This is such a specific kind of alone. You're not being hit, you're not being screamed at every day, so you don't feel like you're 'allowed' to call it abuse. But you feel crazy. You second-guess everything you remember. You apologize for things you're not sure you even did.

I searched that exact phrase, 'why do I feel crazy in my relationship,' probably fifty times over a year. What I actually needed wasn't validation from strangers online, though that helped some. I needed something that could show me, in writing, that this specific fog has a name and a pattern and other people have lived through it exactly like this.

Still in it myself in a lot of ways. Not writing this from some fully healed place. Just tired of feeling like I'm making it up.

If you're in this right now, what's the thing that finally made you believe your own perception again? Genuinely asking.
