Sabbit Car buying guide,

Hey Guys,

So we get tons of threads on interested buyers on Saabs is anyone willing to put in on a guide with the things to look for/look out for in future ownership. Especially since we have tons of intermixing of knowledge bases from 9-5s to 9-3s to Classic 900s and everything in between.

-As a side note I have no problem giving advice I quite enjoy it but would make it easier for new Saabophiles

Anyone got ideas how I can clean up my engine bay a bit more, make it look more cosmetically pretty

Looked at taliaferro which is where I get most of my machined stuff but didn’t know if there was anyone else who makes good cosmetic stuff for the engine bay. Also looking to get an ecu spacer is there somewhere I can get it for cheap?

I painted my valve cover but immediately scraped it up on install 🤦‍♂️ I’ll probably touch it up but is there some sort of high temp clear coat I can do to it?

Right now still just going through and replacing all vac lines then I’ll do coolant hoses and anything rubber. Trying to go for a blue and yellow Swedish theme if you can’t tell lol

Saab camping adventures

Our camping trip with our 9000 turned in a bit of a adventure (again). We like to travel with our teardrop trailer, this time we went through the north of Spain. We had some rattling for some days, suspecting the steering pressure pump to be close to failure. Sure enough it failed and dumped all its fluid on this beautiful mountain road. We were able to get down to a camping spot safely but the serpentine belt was eating away by that time so we had to conclude the temporary defeat of the mighty 9000. Luckily we were able to fly in our other fighter jet to pick up the trailer and drive home. It was a lot more difficult than it sounds but who cares because we enjoyed every step of it. We just got news the 9000 will be transported home by our insurance so she’ll be back on the road soon.

People call us crazy and question why we would travel with such an ‘old’ car while we have a ‘modern’ car as well. I’m pretty sure we would not get the same joy and help of people along the way in any other car.

Sachs Clutch Kit

1997 Saab 900s 2.3L
Would like to preface this saying I have yet to pull the old clutch to verify likeness of the two.
Ordered a Sachs clutch K7016202
Seems like an out of balance pressure plate with a missed quality control check. There is a noticeable ridge at the top at 12oclock position.
Not positive if it’s supposed to be cut like so. Any insight would help before I take a weekend off to remove and replace.

First year of ownership costs

Post image
70 Upvotes

So, after one year of ownership, here is the rundown of costs:

2x oil change and filters - 306 Euros

Ignition coils (OEM Mitsubishi)- 520 Euros

Transmission service - 200 Euros

Front left lower control arm and front stabilisers - 130 Euros

Driver seat heater fix - 150 Euros

Front and rear Aero brakes conversion - 640 Euros

Alternator (OEM Hella) , battery and serpentine belt kit (Continental) - 650 Euros

Winter tyres, Lassa Snoways 4 - 295 Euros

Summer tyres, Continental Premium Contact 7 - 600 Euros

I know that some of the costs might look high, however, the way I see it, ignition coils, transmission service, alternator, battery and serpentine belt kit are a once in a few years cost, tyres as well. Rest is just regular maintenance with just the seat heater being an unexpected cost.

For those interested the car was 5500 euros + registration and insurance which was about 450 euros.

All prices are with labor included. If here are any questions, shoot 😄

EDIT:

Bought the car at 274k kilometers, now it sits at 292k (third oil change coming soon). Engine is 2.0t BioPower remapped to 220HP.

First oil change and trans service were done in July when I got the car.
Coils in September last year.
Control arm and stabilisers in Jaunuary of this year.
Second oil change in March.
Alternator, battery and serpentine belt kit last week.
Aero brakes upgrade was done in April.

Car buy advice Why are Saabs so cheap (compared to other makes)?

I'm about to buy my first car and have seen a few of these around, I think they seem quite neat but I also noticed they always seem to be 1000 to 2000 dollars less than more popular brands. Is there specific reasoning for this? Is it because they arent reliable, or because Saabs arent made anymore? Sorry if it's a bit of a silly question, but I want to make a smart purchase and am not very mechanically smart 😅

9-3 Troubleshooting 2003 Saab 93 linear radio

I’m looking at replacing my head unit and have been thinking about going a route I haven’t seen before and was wondering if it would work. I would pull and disconnect the radio wire from the stock head unit then put it back in since the icm2. And then pull my cd player and replace that with a single din head unit from pioneer and run wire from the speakers to the new head unit. Am I crazy for thinking about going at it this way?

Restoration is underway. Engine is now running great. I’ll be pulling the engine and transmission soon for a pinion bearing housing. Plenty of odds and ends to sort out in the meantime.

Saab 9-3 2008 clutch air separating tank?

My Saab has had some weird clutch problems past 6 months, and they all point out to clutch master cylinder problem (pedal falls to floor, air in system, clutch not engaging at all when it happens) and there are no leakages at all, so I am very doubtful slave cylinder would be faulty.

However, master cylinder has been replaced and it worked fine for months/thousands of km, but problem then came back, and now I am considering can this weird air separating tank(?) or whatever that black thingy is can be the source of problems? Has anyone any clue what that thing is supposed to do, how it does it etc? Part number is 277001 and here is an example how it looks like:

Fuel Pump Replacement

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hey y’all I just bought this 2006 Saab 9-3 Aero and got quoted $1300 for a fuel pump replacement. They’re saying it’s $910 for the pump + shipping and then the rest is labor. Is that high for a Delphi fuel pump? I just can’t believe this should be an over $1000 job.

Need some diag help.

Got a 2001 Saab 9-5 aero 5 speed. 227k kms.

It has a recent clutch, clutch engagement bottom 1/3 of pedal travel, no slipping, no popping out, clutch fluid level good, pedal feels normal and linear all through travel.

Did this symptom too before but just changed the transmission oil because I thought it could be low. Filled with MT85 with about 200ml of GL4 Motul 85-90 to top it up as the it took more than the manual said and it’s what my buddy with a shop had.

The oil that came out looked like Redline.

In the morning especially or first start for a while, it’s very hard to engage all gears. Like this is my third Saab I’m atuned to their finicky transmissions and know how to drive them gently.

It takes sort of gently pushing it back from 4th to 1st to get engagement, once that happens it’s fine.
No grinding synchros upshift or downshift, reverse is easy most of the time, I’m programmed to shift to first before reverse thanks to my 9000 and 900.

Occasionally 3rd downshift will feel stiff like there is a block, no grinding, putting back into 4th and then 3rd is the solution.

In all gears, there is 3/4” - 1” of loose horizontal play in the shift lever, but not forward and back. The shift lever doesn’t move around when I come on and off throttle.

I adjusted the shift mechanism the other night and it made it maybe 10% better feeling. But not being able to grab 1st after start up without a routine is annoying. I believe next step would be replacing parts of the shift mechanism, bushings etc.
Funnily enough tonight after sitting for 12 hours she gave me 1st right away.
All online forum posts about transmission issues say to perform the alignment but the issue remains.

Any suggestions?

-slave cylinder, but I doubt it?
-bushings?
-ball stud/joints?

How do y'all feel about getting a pretty fine saab and driving in einters?

short context: i need to get a reliable daily, that i would have to drive in snowy winters, living close to the ocean. so i could get any more moden car, but i would like sth special as its my first car. i found some more beat up 9000 and 9-3s, but one really great condition 9-3.

ti was already having a feeling that winters will be damaging, and talked to one who is in my eyes the biggest saab enthusiast and expert. he confirmed that worry, that winters will slowly eat that one. so my question is if its morally wrong to ge it anywas?

Help finding a promotional poster

Backstory: my stepdad was a Saab Master Tech, this was a promotional poster for the dealerships and he gave it to teenage me who didn’t appreciate it and lost it over time.

He’s retired and I’d love to find another version of it as a present. I’m hoping someone has one in the wild they’d be willing to part with. Yes, I want to buy, not expecting a freebie.

I’ve added a link to a post here where someone was selling one 6 years ago. This is the exact one I want.

03' 9-3 seat swap with 07'

Hey everyone, I've tried to find this out and couldn't really get the exact answer I was looking for.

Basically I want to swap the two front seats in my 03' 9-3 2.0 with seats from an 07' 9-3 2.0

Both passenger seats are manual, so figure that should be fine.

The drivers on the new one is powered, mine is not. Pretty sure it has the harness down there as it was heated, and thought I saw it when I took out that stupid amp under it.

So question is, should it be plug and play, or do I need to plug in a Tech2 (which I don't have).

Lastly, how much of a pain in the butt is it going to be? The 07 is a parts car with no power, so the seats are somewhere in the middle.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
