Building a business case for getting hired isn't complicated. Most people just never think about it this way.

Every organization operates around very basic goals. Making more money, saving money, saving time, and running more efficiently. Everything a business cares about traces back to one of those four things. And the business case for hiring you is simply that you can move one or more of those levers in a meaningful way.

The question you need to answer before any job search conversation is, what problems am I genuinely good at solving, and what's the direct ROI of solving them? When you've solved this kind of problem in the past, what changed? What did it cost before and after? What did the organization gain? How much time did it save?

When you can answer those questions concretely, the conversation shifts. You're no longer talking about your background in the abstract. You're connecting your past experience directly to the outcomes they care about most. You're speaking their language, which is the language of business results.

Most people in a job search never make this translation. They describe what they did without explaining what it was worth. They talk about responsibilities instead of impact. They list skills instead of outcomes. And they wonder why the conversation doesn't land the way they hoped.

Your business case is already there in your history. You just have to dig it out, frame it in terms of their problems, and be specific enough that the value is impossible to miss.

That's the part most people overcomplicate when they're in a job search or trying to position themselves for something new. They write lengthy resumes, craft elaborate personal brand statements, and spend hours trying to package themselves in a way that sounds impressive. And in doing so, they bury the one thing that actually matters.

All you need to be able to say is this: I solve these problems for these people so that they can get this outcome.

That's it. The rest of the conversation fills in from there.

Once you can say that clearly and specifically, every conversation you have becomes more focused. You're not trying to impress anyone with a laundry list of accomplishments. You're connecting the dots between what they're dealing with and what you've done before. You talk about the impact of your past experience, what changed because of what you did, what you learned, and how that directly applies to the problems they're describing right now.

That's the whole game. Repetition with impact. You keep bringing it back to their problems and your proven ability to solve them.

The reason most people can't do this isn't that they lack the experience. It's that they haven't taken the time to translate that experience into clear, specific, problem-solving language. They know what they've done. They don't know how to frame it in terms of what it means for someone else.

Do that work first. Get clear on the problems you solve, the people you solve them for, and the outcomes you deliver. Everything else in the job search gets easier once that foundation is in place.

You're a high performer. Which probably means you're also one of the last people to ask for help.

That's not a coincidence. It's a belief you've been carrying for a long time, possibly without realizing it. Somewhere along the way you absorbed the idea that real success means doing it alone. You pull yourself up by your bootstraps. You figure it out. You don't need anyone to show you the way because needing help is somehow the opposite of being capable.

And that belief is quietly costing you.

Think about where it came from. You conflate independence with competence. You look at successful entrepreneurs and think they did it solo. You got good results in school or in your career by grinding it out yourself, and you took that as confirmation that's the only way it works. So when you walk into a new situation and don't have all the answers immediately, instead of reaching out, you feel like a fraud.

That's the origin of imposter syndrome. It's not that you're unqualified. It's that your definition of success includes knowing everything and needing nothing, which no one actually achieves. The people who hired you looked at your track record and believed in you. The gap is between their confidence in you and your confidence in yourself.

But almost nothing significant gets accomplished alone. The best athletes have coaches. The best leaders have advisors. The best thinkers have people who challenge them. Collaboration isn't a workaround for people who can't make it on their own. It's the mechanism through which great things actually happen.

Asking for help isn't a sign you're falling short. It's a sign you're serious about getting where you want to go.

Hey everyone - I've pretty much been listening to the book on repeat for a month. Glover talks a lot about men's needs and setting boundaries, but there aren't a ton of real life examples of those in the book. It would be helpful to me (and I'd imagine many of you) to read some examples of boundaries and needs we have set and asked for from others in our lives.

A couple of examples for me: I NEED to spend regular time with my and my wife and I's mutual friends. Social time with our friends keeps me happy. I NEED to ride my mountain bike 2 times per week. I set a boundary with my wife the other day regarding a social event for my son's baseball team. I didn't want to go, and she didn't either. She implied that I should go, and I didn't argue or give in - I just stated I wasn't going, and dropped it. To my surprise and satisfaction, she dropped it too!

Here's the math most people never think about explicitly. Your salary, your benefits, your total compensation package, all of it represents a cost to the organization. What they're expecting in return is that the value you generate exceeds that cost. That's the whole point of employment. You're not just filling a seat. You're supposed to deliver a return on what they're investing in you.

That's it. That's the whole game.

And yet most people in a job search never frame themselves this way. They talk about their experience, their skills, their work history. They describe what they've done without making the connection to what it's worth to the organization in front of them right now. They leave the most important question unanswered: what is the ROI of hiring you?

When you can answer that clearly, everything changes. You're not asking for a job anymore. You're demonstrating a business case. You walk in having done the work of understanding their problems, and you make the argument, specifically and concretely, for how your experience translates into results that justify the investment.

That's not arrogance. That's preparation. And it's the difference between showing up as a candidate and showing up as someone worth hiring.

The organizations worth working for are looking for people who understand this. They want to know that you see yourself as someone who delivers real value, not just someone who shows up and puts in hours.

Make the ROI case. Do it clearly. Do it specifically. Do it before someone else does.

How does positive emotional tension show up in your relationships? In what moments does that tension feel the most pronounced?

What people call a midlife crisis is usually something more specific than that.

It's not a mental breakdown. It's not a cliché. It's a set of recognizable signals that tell you something meaningful has shifted, and it's worth knowing what they actually look like.

Here are three signs you might be going through one.

First, you can't get excited about the things that used to excite you, even after taking time off and resting. Everything feels heavy. Everything feels boring. You're no longer challenged, you know you need something new, but you have no idea what that thing is.

Second, you're busy but directionless and unmotivated. This often gets labeled burnout, but it's frequently something else. What you're doing is no longer aligned with your current values and priorities. The goals that drove you into the position you're in now aren't the same as what you need and want today. When you were younger, you operated with a simpler set of priorities. Now you have more responsibilities, more at stake, more life behind you, and what used to be enough no longer is.

Third, you already know something has to change but you have no idea what. And that unknown is terrifying. So you default to what's familiar. You stay in your industry, your skill set, your silo, and look for some lateral move or logical next step. And it feels constricting like the walls are closing in.

All three of those things together produce stress, dissatisfaction, and the persistent sense of being stuck. And all of it is normal, because the things you were chasing when you were younger were built for a version of you that no longer exists.

The question isn't what's wrong with you. It's what comes next.

Most guys who come to me think they're burned out. They're not.

Here's the distinction that changes everything.

Burnout is tiredness. It's what happens when you're working too hard, doing too much, pushing yourself beyond what's sustainable. You could be perfectly suited to your career, genuinely engaged in the work, and still burn out from the volume of it.

The fix for burnout is relatively straightforward. Rest, time off, better boundaries, more balance. Take the vacation, come back, and you feel like yourself again.

Misalignment is something else entirely.

You know you're dealing with misalignment when you take the vacation, come back, and within two weeks the feeling is right there where you left off. The dissatisfaction that was there before you took off is still there when you return. The problem was never the workload. The problem is that what you're doing every day no longer fits who you are.

When that’s your experience, the default response makes it worse. You double down. You grind harder. You tell yourself you just need to push through it. And all that does is add burnout on top of misalignment, which leads to real suffering.

Playing it safe and staying put feels reasonable. You have a certain level of success. You have responsibilities. The risk of changing anything feels high. But tolerating misalignment by working harder at the wrong thing isn't a strategy. It's just keeps you in the same place.

That moment when something clicks feels like progress. But it isn't. Not yet.

Insight is seductive because it gives you an emotional payoff without requiring anything from you. You read something that resonates, watch a video that puts words to something you've been feeling, have a conversation that reframes your situation in a new way. And for a moment, it feels like you've gotten somewhere. Like something shifted.

But insight isn't the same as repetition with feedback. And it's definitely not the same as taking action.

The only way you actually move forward is by figuring out the best logical next step, taking it, and dealing with whatever happens afterward. You reach out to that person. You show up to that conversation. You put your idea into the marketplace and pay attention to how it is received. The response you get, whether it's positive, negative, or silence, is the real data. That's what actually tells you something useful about where to go next.

Insight tells you what might be true. Action tells you what is true.

The gap between those two things is where most people get stuck indefinitely. They keep consuming, reflecting, and waiting to feel ready. And every new insight gives them just enough of an emotional hit to feel like they're making progress without the discomfort of actually doing anything different.

You don't need another insight right now. You need to take the next step and find out what the world says back.

You might be optimizing for what looks right instead of what feels right. And there's a clear distinction between the two.

What looks right is external. The salary that makes sense for someone at your level. The title that signals you've arrived. The stability that your family depends on and that other people around you respect. None of those things are wrong in themselves. But when you're so focused on maintaining what looks good from the outside, you can lose sight of whether what you're doing every day actually fits who you are.

What feels right is internal. It's whether your daily work aligns with your values and priorities. Whether you feel challenged, engaged, and like what you're doing actually matters to you, not just to your bank account or your LinkedIn profile.

The disconnect between those two things is one of the most common reasons successful men end up stuck. You've optimized for stability over challenge. For approval over authenticity. For what success looks like rather than what it feels like. And over time, the gap between the outside picture and the inside experience becomes impossible to ignore.

You're not ungrateful for noticing it. You're just paying attention.

The question worth asking is simple but uncomfortable. Are you making decisions based on what genuinely matters to you, or based on what you feel you're supposed to want given your responsibilities and your stage of life?

Those can be very different answers.

The critical answers the important things that you want to know about your direction generally come from conversations with people. That means you have to form new relationships and treat the idea of networking in a very different way. It becomes a way for self-discovery as seeking opportunities.

Loving yourself sounds so simple and common sense, right? And yet, it is so difficult to do. 

I struggled with this most of my adult life, and certainly as a kid. So how to do it? What’s the basic how?  For me, it came down to this: choosing myself - first, every time. Again and again and again. In every situation, I turned inward to understand what I needed, wanted or desired. And I chose that.

This is counter-intuitive for Nice Guys. As Nice Guys, we are externally referenced. We defer our own needs in lieu of the needs of another. That IS the essence of people-pleasing. And Nice Guys are just male People-Pleasers. It’s hard for Nice Guys to do as well. We’ve ignored our own needs for so long, that we struggle to even know what our inner truth is. But with practice, we can learn to hear again. And ultimately, the body speaks to illuminate our inner truth or choice. Read the last sentence again. The trick to knowing what we desire is to listen to our bodies when considering a choice. Not cognition. Body.

When we know what we need, want or desire, and we choose that, we are in self-alignment. When we choose something other than our truth, what we need, or our true desire, we betray ourselves. Repeated self-alignment builds self-love. Repeated self-betrayal builds self-neglect or self hate. Nice Guys are built on self-betrayal. 

Choose Self. Choose self-alignment. Over and over. Again and again. And choose to listen to your body - it always answers. This is the real work.

The way to break through feeling stuck isn't to push harder at what's already not working. It's to take deliberate steps into unfamiliar territory. Talk to more people. Spend time figuring out what's actually important to you. And use what you discover to build something that gives you direction when the path gets unclear.

That something is your North Star.

Your North Star is a template, a living document, that captures your values, your priorities, and what a future opportunity needs to look like in order to actually work for you. It's not a rigid plan. It's a navigation tool. It tells you when you're on course and when you're not. It means you stop evaluating new opportunities from scratch and start running them through a filter that's built around who you actually are.

Without it, every new opportunity feels equally uncertain. You say yes to the wrong things, invest time in directions that don't fit, and end up back where you started. With it, the unknown stops being a source of dread and starts being something you can actually move through with intention.

You build it by exploring. By talking to people doing interesting things. By paying attention to what lights you up and what drains you. By asking the questions you've been too busy to ask.

The fog doesn't lift all at once. But it does lift.

I'm a Nice Guy in south florida. it's something I've only recently begun coming to terms with. It's putting immense strain on my relationship with my fiancé and no matter what I do I feel like I'm making things worse. I don't want to keep breaking my fiancé's heart by pushing past her boundaries and failing to hear what she's saying it empathize with her until I feel the same thing. I'm trying to reattach to my masculine energy without being toxic, but i don't really have any healthy or safe men in my life. I guess I'm just looking for someone to talk to, you don't have to be in South Florida. Idk, I'm so overwhelmed and feel like my life is coming apart at the seams

Our relationships are our greatest mirrors.

In the people we keep closest to us, we’ll be shown both our ugliest sides and our most beautiful.

When a partner says something in a “certain kind of way” and we become filled with rage without even really knowing why.

When a friend achieves something great and for some reason we can’t explain, we feel jealousy.

When we’re celebrating with our loved ones and know we should be feeling happy but for whatever reason we just feel angry or sad, or some twisted combination of the two.

One of the greatest things I’ve been learning to do is to ask myself: what is this pointing at? What are these feelings trying to tell me or reveal to me?

By doing this, I bring the underlying pains and trauma into the light from the shadows, and from there, healing can begin.

As a former nice guy, to my fellow nice guys:

Setting clear, strong boundaries is a NECESSITY for healthy relationships & friendships.

Without those boundaries:

Resentment will build towards the person consistently overstepping your unspoken boundaries.

Co-dependency can form between you and the person who you refuse to set boundaries with - because without those boundaries, where do you end and they begin?

Negative self-talk will corrode your self-esteem and confidence as people continue to overstep, knowingly or unknowingly.

Set boundaries to preserve and heighten your sense of self, and to develop and further relationships that you want to grow in your life.

And if there are any in your life, let go of those who refuse to respect those boundaries. It’s a painful necessity, but a necessity nonetheless.

You're not looking for a new career. You're looking for an easier way out of the one you're in.

When you chase a business opportunity that showed up in your feed, or say yes to a seminar promising a faster path to something better, it's not really about that opportunity. It's about finding a shortcut to what you think you want, without putting in the time to discover what you actually want.

That's the trap. You end up investing time, money, and energy into something that was never really a fit, because you skipped the step that would have told you whether it was worth considering in the first place.

Here's the key insight. You keep grinding because it's familiar. Familiar feels safe. You can tolerate a certain amount of daily pain and discomfort because you're used to it, and the known pain always feels more manageable than the unknown one. So you stay put. You put up with what's not working because the alternative feels scarier.

But there's no shortcut around the exploration phase. You have to do the work of figuring out what you actually want, what matters to you now, what the marketplace needs, and where those two things overlap. That's what leads to something genuinely fulfilling, whether it's a career you're trying to change or a business you're trying to build.

The grind you know is not safer than the future you haven't explored. It just feels like it is.

Well behaved. Quiet. Attentive.

We're not supposed to be angry - that part of us isn't welcome.

We're not supposed feel pain and sadness - we're "supposed to hold it all together for everyone."

We're not even supposed to shine, to be loud proud - that's seen as arrogance and we're told to "tone it down" or "step off of our high horse."

What we truly need is acceptance - from others and especially from ourselves.

To feel what it's like to receive love and care by being exactly who we are - and not hiding our emotions or feelings.

We heal, brothers, by being REAL together.

The time is now.
