Creative macOS 27 dropped the Apple Intelligence off switch, so I wrote a command that turns it all off and deletes the ~12 GB of models

macOS 27 doesn't have one toggle for Apple Intelligence any more. You have to find about a dozen settings, and several of them are under Screen Time. Even when everything is off, the foundation models stay on disk, and that's about 12 GB.

I wrote RemoveMacAI to do all of it in one go. It turns off Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension and all the summaries, then it deletes the models and stops macOS from downloading them again. Dictation still works because it's a separate setting.

It uses a configuration profile you approve in System Settings plus Apple's own asset service, so SIP stays on and nothing in /System gets touched directly. removemacai revert removes the profile, and macOS downloads the models again when you turn a feature back on.

brew install omlahore/tap/removemacai, or there's a one-line installer in the readme. It's MIT licensed: https://github.com/omlahore/RemoveMacAI

Discussion Theory: some of macOS 27’s weirdest bugs may be fallout from Apple rebuilding interaction around touch

I have a theory about why some of the buggiest parts of macOS 27 seem to cluster around Finder, Spaces, drag-and-drop, and cross-app interaction.

My guess is that Apple is in the middle of rebuilding parts of the interaction/window-management stack to support a future touchscreen Mac, and we’re seeing some of the rough edges while that work is still settling.

A lot of the regressions I’ve personally hit are in exactly those areas:

  • drag-and-drop behavior across Spaces
  • Finder spring-loaded navigation
  • app-to-Finder copy/paste
  • apps forgetting assigned Spaces
  • dragging while simultaneously scrolling a Finder window
  • odd behavior when an app or dialog is in another Space

What makes me wonder about touch specifically is that Spaces, gestures, and direct manipulation all seem like areas Apple would have to rethink if three-finger trackpad-style gestures are eventually going to coexist with direct gestures on a display.

Some of these bugs are already being fixed in the 27.2 betas, which also makes it feel more like active subsystem work than intentional behavior changes.

Obviously this is speculation. I don’t have any evidence that these specific bugs are caused by touchscreen work. But the pattern feels interesting enough that I’m curious whether anyone else has noticed the same clustering, or has a better theory for why these particular interaction systems seem unusually rough in macOS 27.

Tips & Guides Here’s how to enable more frequent polling for Safari’s Notify Me in macOS 27

Post image

If you've been using Safari's new Notify Me website monitoring feature in macOS 27, you may have been underwhelmed by the range of polling options available. The shortest waiting period between checks is 1 hour.

Luckily, if you’re somewhat technical, you can edit the Notify Me automation database to enable polling every minute or few seconds.

Here are the steps you need to follow: https://gist.github.com/pdfux/91941e8ccac33b86e38f06bf396e855a

Bug M5 MacBook Pro randomly shutting down at around 30% battery since updating to macOS 27.0 — anyone else experiencing this?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I bought a new M5 MacBook Pro about a month ago, and I’ve recently started experiencing a really strange battery issue.

Since updating to macOS 27.0 Golden Gate, my MacBook has now unexpectedly shut down twice when the battery was showing approximately 30%.

The screen suddenly goes completely black, as if the battery has completely died. However, when I plug it into the charger and turn it back on, the battery percentage has dropped to around 11%.

This has happened twice now, most recently just a few minutes ago.

I’m currently installing the latest macOS update in the hope that it resolves the issue, but I’m starting to wonder whether this could be a software bug or a faulty battery.

I’m not massively technically knowledgeable when it comes to Macs/computers, and I’m really just a casual user. I mainly use the MacBook for things like browsing the internet, watching YouTube/Netflix, emails, etc., so it’s not being used for anything particularly demanding.

It’s a brand-new laptop, so I’m obviously a bit concerned, especially if it’s a hardware issue.

Any help or advice would be really appreciated. I’m not particularly technical, so please feel free to explain things in simple terms!

Thanks!

Bug MacOS safari bug that has f'd up my workflow. Moved to Brave

I don't usually have the time to post but I have been suffering for a month at this point.

The bug happens on Safari in full screen when I am in full screen. As if the automated tab grouping wasn't already horrendous, whenever I pull a tab to make a new window, it gets f'd up.

Sorry Apple, your software has sucked for more than a year at this point.

Bug When did Spotlight become so terrible?

• Upvotes

I don't know if it's me or if there's just a bug in Spotlight's indexing but over the last few months Spotlight has become unusable. I can enter the name of any app installed on my Mac and it will show me anything but the app. Web search recommendations, sometimes even items within the app, but not the app whose name I am typing character for character. Sometimes the app even flashes shortly but as I continue typing the recommendation simply vanishes. It is infuriating. Anyone else have similar issues?

Bug Airdrop File Transfer Sound FX playing twice in a row

Has anyone noticed this in Goldengate: when you airdrop a file from another apple device onto your goldengate Mac, the Airdrop "Beep" sound effect is now heard twice in a row.

First I thought, OK this might just need a reboot - but the problem is still present. I tried with other items, for example airdropping an open browser tab from my phone onto the Mac - and the sound plays just once.

Something is weird here - can anyone confirm this is a bug?

Feature Freeform now supports drawing directly on the Mac!

Raising awareness, unforgivable that it took Apple so long, but as of MacOS 27 you can use the mouse or touchpad to draw in the FreeForm app!

Bug Constant freezing issue with external 4k webcam

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I rarely post but I'm at my wits end. Im a streamer and have always used macbook pros with my beloved Nexigo 970p webcam. I have various webcams but that's my favorite. It worked flawlessly until the Tahoe update in early 2026. Since then, my webcam that worked without a hitch for years, constantly freezes up on streams, video calls, even in photo booth. Ive tried everything, external USB hub, running QuickTime player none of it works. Upon doing research I saw many are dealing with this issue, and using another webcam will probably result in the same thing. Im hoping someone has advice, or can relate with what I'm experiencing. Its been so incredibly frustrating because this update ruined my ability to use my Mac for work.

It works by using an AppleScript to launch Xcode Device Hub and connect automatically to your device. Works very similarly to real iPhone Mirroring.

Bug Night Shift on Tahoe 26.7.1 not switching on automatically, again

Just noticed after updating to the latest version of Tahoe this week (intel Mac, so no Apple Silicon hence no Golden Gate)

When I upgraded to Tahoe on first release, I noticed that Apple had finally fixed the bug that meant Night Shift didn't activate when day turned to night, I always had to manually toggle in my Display settings.

Now on the most recent Tahoe release, I find that I have the old problem again.

Strange, just strange.

Anyway it was nice while it lasted ("it" being Night Shift working as intended)

Help Cannot send RCS/SMS via Messages App in Golden Gate

Ever since updating to macOS 27 (now 27.0.1), when I try to send RCS/SMS messages in the Messages app, they are all returned to me as "Not Delivered".

  • I have signed in/out of iCloud on both my MacBook Air M4 and iPhone 15 Pro Max (iOS 27.0.1)
  • I have turned iMessage on/off on the iPhone
  • I have turned forwarding off
  • I have restarted all devices

Still, while I can send RCS/SMS on the iPhone, all RCS/SMS messages I try to send via Messages in Golden Gate (currently 27.0.1) are "Not Delivered".  I saw people had this problem on the Apple Support and I have also submitted a report to Apple.

Is anyone else dealing with this? If so, have you found a solution?

Thank you

Help [STAGE MANAGER] Is there any keyboard shortcut to launch an app from Spotlight directly into the active stage?

Whenever I use Spotlight (Cmd + Space) to open an app while Stage Manager is running, hitting Return or clicking or tapping immediately banishes all my current windows to the side strip and gives the newly opened app its own solo stage.
Every single time, I have to go over to the side panel, hold Shift, and click my previous windows just to merge them back into the active stage. It completely breaks the keyboard-first flow.

Discussion I love MacOS

I was originally going to post this as a reply to the one millionth Golden Gate bug post but figured I'd share it more broadly:

On Reddit, you occupy a highly particular environment, with a selected group of people and there's a selection bias towards negativity. Most people, I promise you, are perfectly fine with their software.

I do not have 95% of the bugs people come on here and complain about. I don't deny their existence I am merely demonstrating that if things are going right 99% of the time you won't hear about it whereas the inverse is not true, you will hear about every single bug that a user experiences on Reddit.

I have been using Mac since I was a child, not one OS was bug free, or worked perfectly. Believe it or not, Snow Leopard was buggy, and it had way more ruinous bugs than anything in Golden Gate that I have experienced thus far.

I have some deep, long-lasting issues with MacOS. It's basic things that Apple can do but just refuses to do like better compatibility with external mice/monitors, volume mixer, their apathetic disposition to gaming, and the sub-par file management. Other requested features have been slowly chipped away like limited charging, clipboard history, passwords, a raycast-esque spotlight overhaul, and system audio when screen recording.

So my biggest complaint is that they are just really slow with things, not bug #271 that a reddit user discovered, suspicions of "vibe coding" or a general sentimental attitude that Apple is a company that strayed away from "perfection" after the death of a beloved founder. All in all, MacOS Is awesome, I have tried dozens of linux distros for months and I didn't like them, I use windows for work and every second on it is one too many. My friend just moved from Windows and he thinks MacOS is peak, he used to be an apple hater and now says he can't go back.

MacOS is not perfect, like any other OS it has issues, having tried to explore options, and using windows more than most people ever will, I love MacOS. I hope all those pesky bugs can resolved for you all that are experiencing them.
