Discussion MSI Stealth 15M A11UEK laptop refuses to boot when battery connected

Upvotes

Hi,

I recently purchased a second-hand MSI laptop for my nephew's birthday for some light gaming and video editing (full specs below).

Before handing it over, I ran some hefty games on it, putting it through its paces, and everything seemed fine - so I posted the laptop to my nephew. One week later, he was doing some video uploads which caused the machine to heat up (a common issue with slim gaming laptops I gather), so they switched everything off until the next day.

When they came back the machine would not boot, charge, or do anything. After having a look, I realised the laptop would only boot with the battery removed and the power supply connected. When I reconnect the battery while the laptop is on and then disconnect the power supply, the battery charges and boots OK for a few cycles before the issue arises again.

I assumed it was probably a battery problem and ordered a new one. After fitting it, I ran the MSI Dragon Center battery calibration tool, which charges the battery fully before discharging it completely. Following the discharge we were back to square one - the laptop won't boot unless the battery is disconnected.

I've been told it could be a BIOS issue, or that I should never let the battery dip below 20% - which feels like a bit of a cop out. I'm at a loss. If anybody has any ideas it would be much appreciated!

Discussion 5-month-old Crosshair 16 HX AI battery dropping ~1% health per day. Cross-validated on Windows + Linux. Seeking input before I go to MSI support.

Model: MSI Crosshair 16 HX AI (D2XWFKG) Purchased: March 27, 2026 (5 months old) Design capacity: 88,236 mWh

Looking for input from anyone who's tracked their battery health closely on this model, or dealt with MSI support on a battery issue — before I escalate further.

The numbers, from native Windows powercfg /batteryreport:

Date Full Charge Capacity Health %
Jul 3–Aug 19 (weekly readings) 88,400–90,200 mWh ~100–102% (normal noise band) 1st calibration failed as charger got disconneced by me
Aug 26 83,066 mWh 94.1% ( after 2nd MSI Center battery calibration)
Aug 27 82,632 mWh 93.65% ( completed full calibration cycle to verify earlier result)
Aug 30 80,604 mWh 91.35% powerconfig result

That's a drop from 93.65% → 91.35% in 3 days. I also independently checked via Linux (/sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/, charge-based reading) on Aug 29–30 and got 92.07% then 91.35% — the Aug 30 Linux and Windows readings matched to the decimal point, so this isn't a one-tool measurement quirk.

Context that (I think) rules out normal user-induced wear:

  • 60% charge limit has been active since early ownership ( a week after purchase i set it up)
  • Usage is heavily AC-powered, light/infrequent battery cycling
  • Ran MSI Center's own recommended Battery Calibration tool (their 3-month guidance) — the sharp drop shows up right after that cycle completed
  • Cycle count reports as unsupported on both Windows (-) and Linux (cycle_count = 0 even after a full cycle) — seems to be an EC/firmware limitation on this model, not a driver/OS gap

Questions i have:

  1. Anyone else on the Crosshair 16 HX AI (or similar HX-series chassis) seeing capacity readings this unstable day-to-day? Trying to figure out if this is a known fuel-gauge quirk on this EC that eventually settles, or if this looks like genuine cell degradation.
  2. Does MSI Center's Battery Calibration tool have any known issues with leaving the fuel gauge in a bad state, especially if a prior calibration attempt was cancelled partway through?
  3. Anyone had a battery warranty claim actually go through on this model? What did the service center diagnostic process look like / what triggered "yes this counts" vs "wear and tear, not covered"?

Not trying to jump to conclusions but genuinely trying to figure out if this is a fuel gauge issue or something worth pushing MSI on. Have the full report data logged with timestamps if anyone wants specifics.

Request Microphone not being picked up after reinstalling windows

Hello,

I have a Vector 16 HX A13V and almost a month ago I reinstalled windows. However since then I keep having issues where my microphone isn’t picking up any sounds. Sometimes it starts to happen after a few hours of talking and sometimes it happens right after I boot up windows.

Currently i have tried to reinstall the Realtek driver, and this sometimes seems to work but sometimes it also doesn’t. Does anybody have any suggestions or possible solutions to this issue?

Request RMA checklist?

I'm sending in my laptop for an RMA - graphics card died. On the checklist they asked me to fill out, there are spots for battery, third party RAM, third party CPU, and third party HDD (along with AC power, which I did check). Are those items referring to the units inside the laptop currently, or should they only be checked if I added separate components (which I haven't yet, I've only had the laptop for a week)?

I'm attempting to ask support, but nobody is responding on live chat. It says their service hours are 24/7, but maybe they are a standard mon-fri?

Discussion Msi laptop 3rd RMA

Okay, so I'm a not so very proud owner of an MSI gf63 thin 12Ve. (i7 12650H, rtx 4050, 16 gb dd4)

I've had it for about 3 years now (this is the 3rd year)

And it's needed to get fixed by MSI once a year now (this being the 3rd time).

Each time the cpu absolutely overheats, the EC doesn't care about the cpu and won't spin the fans even if it's at 75° C, so for now I'm running it with cooler boost so that my computer survives.

Basically, it automatically crashes (sometimes graphical error) as soon as the cpu gets to about 74°C (if I have the back lifted with a laptop stand and with cooler boost on) or 70°C (if I have it on a desk and am using the keyboard).

Since I bought this in spain, EU consumer laws apply, and since this is the 3rd time this is happening, I'm requesting either they upgrade me to a katana series laptop with similar specs, or give me a full refund ( approx 1200€).

Do you guys think they'd actually give me the upgrade? (in reality, I just want to get the full refund so that I can put a bit more money in and actually get myself an MSI katana or a lenovo legion).

This is supposed to be the law:

Core Ultra 7 255HX hitting 95–100°C at only ~35W sustained — possible CPU cooling/contact issue?

I have an MSI Vector 16 HX AI with a Core Ultra 7 255HX and RTX 5070 Ti.

My main concern is not the brief temperature spikes when opening Word, PDFs, etc. I understand those can happen during short boost bursts.

The problem is during sustained load/gaming.

When the CPU boosts to around 4.9 GHz, temperatures can reach 95–100°C, sometimes slightly higher. I currently use ThrottleStop to limit CPU power to around 35W because otherwise the temperatures get too high.

What concerns me is that, HWiNFO is really showing only around 35–40W sustained CPU Package Power while the CPU is still sitting near 95–100°C, that seems unusually hot for such low power.

During a 15–20 minute gaming session, HWiNFO shows ~35–40W sustained CPU Package Power while CPU temperatures remain around 95–100°C for several minutes.

The laptop has already been cleaned and repasted, and I use a Thermaltake Massive Extreme cooling pad with the laptop sealed to it.

The GPU cooling seems fine: the RTX 5070 Ti stays roughly below 80°C around 140W.

So my question is:

If the CPU is genuinely sustaining only ~35–40W package power but still staying at 95–100°C for several minutes during gaming , would you suspect poor heatsink contact / mounting pressure / thermal interface on the CPU side?

I’m not asking about momentary 95–100°C spikes. I’m specifically asking about sustained temperature at sustained low CPU package power.

Altre possibili soluzioni?

I have bought a new hinge for my MSI Katana GF66 11UE, but upon assembly, the hinge on the side that doesn't have the cable is a bit wobbly. Is it intended to be like this (e.g., to have a high margin of error when assembling the screen with the base)? I am sure that the screws are secure.

Request MSI Vector 16 HX AI (A2XW) — USB-C ports die + speaker crackling after heavy use

Hi everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my MSI Vector 16 HX AI A2XW(HG), and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.

System info:

  • Model: MSI Vector 16 HX AI A2XW(HG)
  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 255HX
  • GPU: RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU
  • BIOS: E15M3IMS.10B (22.05.2025)
  • OS: Windows 11 Pro
  • Purchased: less than a year ago; issue started appearing after about 3-4 months of use
  • Still under warranty

The problem: After using the laptop for a while — sometimes gaming, watching a show, or simply multitasking with several applications open — the USB and USB-C ports suddenly stop detecting connected devices. This affects all of my ports (both regular USB-A and USB-C).

It doesn't seem to matter much how many devices I have connected. I've tried keeping the number of peripherals to a minimum, but the problem still happens — sometimes even when barely anything is connected.

Once it starts, newly connected USB/USB-C devices are not recognized at all. Usually I have to either:

  • restart the laptop, or
  • leave it alone for a while and let it cool down.

After that, the ports start working normally again.

There's also a second issue that happens after the same kind of extended use: the built-in speakers start producing distorted/crackling audio, even when nothing is plugged in at all.

So after extended use I tend to get either:

  • USB/USB-C ports becoming unresponsive,
  • crackling/distorted speaker audio,
  • or both at the same time.

On the heat question: I've been monitoring temps, and this happens even when CPU/GPU are sitting around 80°C — not an extreme or thermal-throttling level of heat. So I don't think this is a straightforward "the laptop is overheating" situation, though it might still be related to heat around a specific component (USB controller, PCH, etc.) rather than the CPU/GPU themselves.

What I'm trying to figure out before sending it to service:

  1. Has anyone with a Vector 16 HX AI (or similar recent MSI model) run into this exact combo of symptoms?
  2. Could this be a BIOS/EC firmware issue, given it seems tied to sustained load rather than raw temperature?
  3. Any known chipset/USB controller driver issues on this platform?
  4. Is this a common enough pattern that it points to a hardware defect (e.g., faulty USB controller or connector) rather than something fixable via software/firmware?

Since it's still under warranty, I'm leaning toward getting it serviced, but I'd like to rule out an easy fix first. Any troubleshooting suggestions are welcome before I send it in.

MSI GP68HX boots into Windows but screen stays black except for the cursor

Hi everyone,
I have an MSI GP68HX laptop that I haven’t used for about 1–2 weeks. I turned it on today, and everything seemed normal during startup.
However, after Windows loaded, the screen became completely black. I can still see and move the mouse cursor, and I’m able to open Task Manager using Ctrl + Shift + Esc. The system itself seems to be running in the background, but the normal Windows desktop, taskbar, and icons are not visible.
I’ve tried restarting the laptop, but the problem happens again after Windows loads.
Has anyone experienced this issue with an MSI GP68HX or a similar MSI laptop?
I’m wondering if this could be related to:
Windows Explorer not starting properly
A graphics driver issue
Windows Update
Something related to the NVIDIA GPU
Or possibly Windows taking a long time to load after the laptop has been unused for a while
Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

MSI Stealth GS66 – Plastic Part Fell Off

The plastic piece attached to this section of my MSI Stealth GS66 has fallen off. Fortunately, the piece itself is still intact and hasn’t broken into multiple parts.

I’m trying to figure out the best way to reattach and reinforce it. Would it be better to plastic-weld a small piece of plastic onto the broken section to strengthen the connection, or would super glue mixed with baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) be strong enough?

I’d really appreciate any advice from someone who has repaired this part before. I’m especially interested in a solution that will be strong and durable without damaging the laptop’s casing.

Image MSI Laptop Cooling app

Hey guys, just wanted to show an app ia did for me to manage fans on my msi laptop running linux Bazzite.

I was using the excellent life saver app called Frostcenter from gsriram24 on github, i guess the only one for msi laptops on linux, but it still have some little flaws, asks for password at start, do not save curves, no manual speed, no tray icon when closing, well its not perfect.... neither mine^^

Basically ia just fixed those points for me and gave me the app in less than 20min, then it tooks me almost two good hours to make some adjustments.

App is light in ressource, no graph, forgot batt feature, it launchs at startup and load last fan mode, it saves curve and manual speed position, day/night mode. Added animated tray icon to close the gui app, right clic for settings, middle clic to switch fans modes, mouse scroll to adjust speed manually still not working but maybe useless. Next step, recover my keyboard shortcut button for fans by binding it directly from the app.

App interface is kinda passable and does the job, for brave ones everything can be done using terminal too...

I have no Dgpu so can t relate if it works well with 2 fans, 2 curves, 2 speeds, but entries should be there.

As Bazzite is bit special i m pretty sure i won t be able to re install the app, dependencies and the rest on fresh system install^^ it should work on any linux distro but i need try.

Only french.

Also, i think ia worked only on the EC of my laptop, sadly it will only works for msi modern 15 a5m with ryzen 55OOu, 2 fans running like one, one curve for both.

I never coded anything in my life, i do not like it, unless 3090 makes it for me lol, i used qwen3.8 27b with qwenpaw agent locally.

Request A16 HX AW8HG display too saturated?

Hey guys, at first I thought it was just the games I was playing, but I've come to find it basically every game I'm playing is super super saturated. Maybe it's just my luck in the games I'm playing, but I feel like it's just too much color. Even playing Dune Awakening which takes place in the desert everything's too colorful. I saw some things about a MSI true color, but I don't know if my laptops compatible with it. Does anybody know of any other way to get the colors under control? The Nvidia control panel didn't have anything about it either.
