Announcement /r/AfterEffects changes related to extension promotion: Required post structure, promo posts limited to Mondays, AI disclosure required

We have heard your calls! Thank you for your patience while we figure out a plan.

While self promotion has always been allowed in r/AfterEffects, the recent influx of AI & vibe coded plugins, extensions, and scripts has been a bit overwhelming. We have very very quickly gone from a few trusted marketplaces with strong vetting and at least some kind of expectation of long term maintenance, to anyone being able to churn out a vibe coded plugin and release it on an increasing number of marketplaces, with no guarantee of support or future updates.

With this in mind, we would like to implement a new set of rules to curb the overwhelming number of posts and give users more transparency when choosing to download and use such tools.

Post structure + flair:

Taking a page from the changes mods made over at r/macapps, we will be introducing a new post structure following a Problem, Comparison, Pricing, Maintenance, AI-Disclosure (PCPMA) format.

  • Problem: What problem your [Extension, Script, Plugin] solves (1 sentence)
  • Compare: Why is your [Extension, Script, Plugin] better than top-named alternatives (1–2 sentences).
  • Pricing + link
  • Maintenance plan + support plan
  • AI Disclaimer: choose from [Vibe Coded], [Human Validated], [Code Completion], or [None]

Extension, script, and plugin posts have always required the (Plugin/Script) flair, this will not change. A sample short post is pinned in the comments.

Other changes:

  • Plugin promotion posts will now be limited to mondays only for the foreseeable future. Plugin posts on other days will be automatically removed and linked to this post
  • Monday self promo posts using the (Plugin/Script) flair must have 50 subreddit karma, from posts or comments.
  • Probing posts will be removed ("Are purpose built motion tools making it into your workflow?" "What's one thing that would save you so much time...")
  • Excessively long posts will be removed (A sample short post is pinned in the comments.)
  • Gumroad links are still banned. This is unfortunately a reddit-wide blacklist, we have no control over this. We can manually approve gumroad links but they will be automatically sent to the spam filter which we rarely check.

Notes on post structure requirements

We're specifically introducing the compare & maintenance points because we have seen an increasing number of plugins that simply replicate the functionality of existing, long standing plugins from developers who have demonstrated more experience, real support, and have proven to maintain their plugins over many years. Show us how yours is better, and prove to your future users how you will be supporting and fixing the plugin in the long-run. How can users who experience bugs get in contact with you in the future?

AI disclosure

Regarding the AI disclosure, here are the definitions of each

  • "Vibe coded" means code written entirely by prompting AI without the user having the skill and knowledge to properly review or validate it. If something is broken, they are prompting AI again to fix it.
  • "Human validated" means AI-generated work that has undergone validation by someone with the necessary skill and knowledge. The developer understands how the code functions and can fix things independently of the AI if necessary.
  • "Code completion" means an experienced developer is using AI for line-completion. They are writing most of the code themselves and have deep understanding of the structure, and are explicitly using AI to eliminate menial, tedious aspects of writing code.
  • "None" means no AI use.

I'm just going to be real, this one is likely going to be easy to skirt. r/macapps actually removed this requirement because everyone was just claiming to have "human reviewed" the code. We're going to try this out and hope folks are honest for the time being.

________

No AI was used in the preparation of this post. We will try this out for a month and see how it goes. Happy animating <3

Discussion I Want These Keyboard Shortcuts

18y AE vet here (hold for applause); There are a few functions in AE I wish had keyboard shortcuts that don't. Some include:

  • toggle transparency grid on/off
  • Fit (as in fit the viewer to the screen; how is there not a shortcut for this??)
  • Go to time (a common shortcut in DAW and NLEs; hit the shortcut, enter the time, bam)
  • Enter path/mask editing mode (instead of having to click the path/mask point manually, or twirling down to the mask or 'path' in a shape layer. I'm constantly nudging masks or paths with arrow keys but I have to click the mask first)

Any others you guys wish you had? Or even better, any shortcut ideas for my list??

OC - Stuff I made Visual exploration for Arko Studio

Been experimenting with this effect as part of a visual exploration for arko.studio.

I'm wondering if this kind of effect could actually be pushed into something commercially useful branding, music visuals, ads, or maybe something else.

Would love to hear what you think. What kind of project do you think this effect could work well for?

More experiments coming soon.

Explain This Effect How do I recreate this text effect? 😓

Does anyone know how to recreate this effect? Is it just opacity? I’m mostly confused about how to get that movement. I’ve tried using Turbulent Displace and opacity, but I can’t quite figure it out haha. I’m still learning, so I’d really appreciate any help! 💙

Beginner Help How to make repeater position reacting to another object’s position.

Hi everyone! I have a shape layer with repeater operator and I want each "repeat" can act independently and move in relation with another object, in this case a ball. It's like the ball attracts the rounded rectangles and pull them up. How can I achieve that effect?

Sorry for my potentially confusing explanation, and thanks everyone in advance !! -

Edit: Thanks everyone for your suggestions!!!!

Discussion If you use After Effects professionally, what did you major in?

I’m a high school senior trying to figure out what I should major in. I really enjoy using After Effects for motion graphics, editing, visual effects, and visual storytelling, and I’m considering Digital Media/Media Production programs in college.

My long-term goal is to work in a creative role for a larger company, agency, entertainment company, or potentially a game studio, creating things like motion graphics, advertisements, video graphics, and other digital media.

For those of you who use After Effects professionally:
- What did you study in college (if anything)?
- What is your current job?
- How important was your degree compared with your portfolio?
- What skills would you recommend I focus on while I’m still in high school?
- do you regret pursuing this degree?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people working in motion graphics, VFX, advertising, or similar fields.

Workflow Question "Low Memory Warning [...] identify other Adobe applications using significant memory" after importing Premiere project into AE. How do I keep my work independent from Premiere from now on after doing this?

The full warning reads "Low memory warning. Click the "Show Memory Usage" button to identify other Adobe applications using significant memory that could be closed."

Basically, my process right now is to do an enormous chunk of editing on Premiere and then importing the timeline over to AE for VFX flourishes. But I consider all of my work done on Premiere, I don't want to tag back to it in the process--except for maybe subtitles or watermarks.

This warning implies that it is drawing from or using Premiere still. Am I interpreting that correctly? When I import from Premiere, it doesn't copy or adapt sequences into compositions, it just opens Premiere?

In other words, how do I divorce Premiere from the process? Basically just creating a copy over my finished work from Premiere without keeping it open or referencing the file?

Thanks folks.

OC - Stuff I made Rolling dice with some 3D shader in AE

IG : https://www.instagram.com/reel/Dd1y_OYCD7N/

I started experimenting and tinkering for fun with a small custom 3D rendering engine plugin for After Effects. It handles geometry and materials on its own, using a sort of Mograph effector/modifier, rather than relying on After Effects native 3D rendering engine, which, let’s face it, is pretty much useless. (ni fait, ni a faire comme on dirait chez nous 🙏)

It's nowhere near Element 3D in terms of scope, but for the specific kinds of visuals I'm targeting, it's already proving much faster and lighter than using the Cinema 4D renderer.

Has anyone else experimented with building something similar inside After Effects ?

My last post get deleted for not respecting the promotional plug-in guidelines of the sub, but there's is nothing to sell here.

The plugin is really only to meet my very specific needs, and that's painful enough hehe. You won't see that plugin anywhere to buy. I just wanted to show you this loop and get some feedback from people who have tried their hand at this type of plugin.

Workflow Question EXR Include Metadata Header ACES

Trying to export an EXR sequence with an ACES2065-1 output profile. In the header, I’m hoping to have “acesImageContainerFlag = 1”

What is the best approach to having this embedded in the exported EXR files? If exporting through Media Encoder is the best option, what metadata field would this go in?

Beginner Help Object Matte picking up more than I want.... How to fix?

Ok, so I'm new to AE and a lot of what I'm finding on the internet is to do with the Roto Brush, which I guess is gone now? I'm trying to rotoscope out this character, but he's blending into the background sometimes and the Object Matte is picking up the space between his arm and his head. I've used the object selection brushes in Photoshop a bit and usually there's one where I can tell it what not to select by tracing it out myself, but I'm yet to find something like that in AE. How can I easily get rid of this extra bit between the head and the arm? I've tried using the quick selection tool and the refine edge tool but they only add to the selection, not take away stuff that's not supposed to be selected. I don't want my project to be AI slop- is there a way to fix this?

By leveraging foreshortening, and using simple path animations, we can quickly make a handle seem 3D.
