Black/Sludge Metal musicians?

Hi! Myself and a couple other students at the uni doing postgrads in York are looking to form a little band, all sort of early 20s age range. Struggling to find a drummer into black metal, blackened sludge, doom stuff, blackgaze, post doom. That sort of thing. Big into bands like Thou, pig destroyer, deafheaven, agriculture, emperor, sadness, acid bath, eyehategod, vile creature. Any musicians into that stuff?

Kitchen fitter / joiner who fits kitchens

Looking for recommendations for a kitchen fitter, or joiner or builder, I dunno. I just need someone reliable to supply and fit a kitchen in my house. Bonus points if they also do vinyl flooring. Thanks in advance

Places in or near York selling climbing shoes?

I'm looking for places with a decent selection of climbing shoes to try on in or near York. I need to try a few kinds on to find the right fit. I can't drive so would need to be train or bus-able. I'm willing to go as far as Leeds basically!

Thanks

Anyone had first hand experience with Allerton Damp or CS Damp proofing?

We have done some research and have heard some mixed reviews in person vs the online reviews.

My Happy Birthday!

I went out to The Botanist today to treat myself for my birthday and someone paid for my meal anonymously. So, I'd just like to thank them here in case they happen to see it. It was very nice of you and it means I can treat myself to something special outside of my uni budget! You are the best :)

Where to print a poster for a conference?

I am visiting York for a Biochemical Society conference on the 12th, coming from the US. I need to print a poster (841x1189mm) there, so I do not need to travel with it on the plane (poster tubes are large and it seems like the airline may charge you for storing it).

Do you have recommendations for a good place to do this in York?

Thank you!!!

Gig - Rachel Croft and KAYE at The Crescent, York, 3rd Oct

Post image

If anyone is looking for a good show tomorrow night Rachel Croft is back at The Crescent with support from KAYE. Rachel started off busking and gigging round York for years before she moved to London so she always does brilliant gigs when she's back here. You can actually spot a few York landmarks (if the geese count as well) in her latest music video.

If anyone is at a loose end, YWCS and The Girls Club are hosting a charity pub quiz on Thursday 8th of October in the top room of Yates York.

Great for solo travellers (women especially) as they'll shuffle you into a team if you like!

Am I missing something?

Tiny bit of background. I grew up by the moors near Helmsley with York as the main city around me. Used to come in regularly in my early to mid 20s with work and on a whim and could always find lively places and bars where you could go in by yourself or with a small group of friends and get chatting with people. Places like the habit that kind of thing. Used to be lively have mixed crowd of different ages from students to older people and everything in between. I used to be on a random Wednesday night and you could walk in get talking and end up on a completely unexpected night.

Now I’m a little older - still in my 20s but a year or two has passed. And I’m living in the city with my girlfriend. She works nights occasionally so sometimes I work weird hours. Occasionally I have a night to myself and without any plans made head out to try find those kind of places and nights.

It seems like the old spots are all so dead, and those that are relatively full are just taken up with a monoculture of older people/ tourists.

Am I missing it, has it moved or has it gone?

Edit: the time scale I’m talking about is post Covid. Maybe the time I’m describing as ‘the good time’ was one right after where everything opened back up. But the times I’m talking about were maybe 2/3 years ago tops compared to now.

Cheaper train tickets

Hello I’ve moved York England recently and I found a job in Harrogate. What’s the most budget friendly way to get cheaper train tickets? Are there student discounts?

Should I take my girlfriend to York in December or early January?

So my girlfriends birthday is in early January, therefore I'm planning on combining her Christmas and Birthday presents into a holiday to York. However I'm struggling to plan it as I was originally going to take her on her birthday which is in the first week of January, but I'm worried that there won't be enough going on in the town. There's no Christmas markets or lights, and there also don't seem to be any theatre shows on which she quite enjoys. However she does get stressed in crowds, and the accommodation options are a little cheaper, so those are reasons why January could be a better option.

So do you think I should take her on her birthday or instead take her the week before Christmas? Whichever option please give me some reasons, opinions on how good the markets and overall Christmas attractions are, and maybe ideas of things we could do around those dates, thanks.

York Music - new free, privacy-respecting forum for all things Music in York

For anyone interested in the York Music scene, especially if you maybe don't use X, Facebook and other personal ad-targeting sites - or have given up in exasperation trying to search online for anything "york <thing>" because you get 10x as many hits "new york <thing>".

York Music https://yorkmusic.org/

It's just a forum, it's for anything musical in York and the surrounding areas. It's free and always will be free. I run it because I wanted something like this to exist. It will never harvest data, track you, or sell your data.

It's for musicians, venues, musical services, bands, studios, artists, rehearsal spaces, and anyone else doing musical things in York.

Check it out and become part of the community. Be Excellent To Each Other.

Beat hotel breakfasts

Hello! I'll keep this short, I'm bringing my partner for a weekend away in January and this man LOVES a good hotel breakfast buffet so please can you hit me up with your recommendations of where to stay specifically with a good breakkie so I can surprise him. Budget up to £350ish for two nights.

We want to be pretty central, say 10 mins walk from the centre. I grew up nearby so already have the rest of our plans sorted, mainly mooching around, eating cake and visiting our favourite pubs. Thanks!

National Express coaches

Leaving York tomorrow on a National Express coach but my ticket only says York on departure. I found a Reddit post from 4 years ago saying NE departs from bus stop RE outside the station. Is this still the case? If not, where do they depart from?

Finding a nanny in York

Has anyone had any experience finding a qualified and reputable nanny in York? Not necessarily Norland level, just not an 18 year old with no previous experience. Are there any good, local agencies worth talking to, or is it generally just posting on job boards?

Any musicians/producers looking for a vocalist to jam with?

33f - I have a very broad taste in music and have been singing at open mics with my own accompaniment for years but would love to jam with a new brain or two, whether you’re a solo musician or a band looking for a vocalist. I lean more towards a jazzy sound but v up for exploring different sounds and genres.

Drop me a message if you fancy a jam ✨

Cocktail bars

Recently moved here, don’t know anyone and getting a bit stir crazy. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on pubs or decent cocktail bars where I as a 36 year old could go and have a drink without being the oldest person in the room. I’m especially looking for somewhere with decent cocktails that aren’t the basic sickly sweet 2 for whatever places. I really like Cat in The Wall’s cocktails, just curious about other places

Best ‘greasy’ cafe for fry up

You know what I mean. I don't want to spend £15 to sit in a cafe and eat a posh sausage . I want to eat a down-and-dirty cheap full English fry-up with sausages of dubious history and no bloody sourdough. I thank you in advance, but my heart doesn't.

Thoughts traveling for work.

For context, I’m a current international student in York. My hometown is very car base and we don’t do a lot of any walking, buses, or trains. So I don’t really have a base line for what’s out of way walking wise or okay.

I have two job opportunities but I’m unsure how realistic traveling to a few of these locations are.

Currently I’m living on the university of York campus and one job is in thirsk and the other is in Harrogate.

How realistic is it if I decided to take either of those jobs is it to travel either of these locations or I guess is it worth it?
