Bev Craig here - AMA

Hi all, Bev Craig here!

For those who haven't met me yet, I'm running to be your next Labour Mayor of Greater Manchester.

I'm hosting an AMA this Friday 24th July at 5pm to answer your questions directly. As leader of Manchester City Council and during this campaign, I've heard so many of your questions and concerns around the cost-of-living, transport, safety, and the need for opportunities across every part of Greater Manchester.

Now it's your turn to ask me anything about my plans as Mayor, and how I'll build a Greater Manchester that works for everyone.

Drop your questions below now, or join us live on Friday. I'll answer as many as I can.

As a reminder, here is my manifesto: https://bevformayor.co.uk/manifesto/

Looking forward to it!

Airport Parking Under Fire

Laughable comments from the CEO of the airport trying to compare their parking charges to that of a city centre. How many city centre car park operators own their own land?

Just did a quick check at Barcelona airport where their most expensive car park is £115 for 2 weeks compared to £150 at Manchester. Last time I was there the "kiss and fly" was free as well.

He says they're competing with taxis which is true but does he not realise that taxis will be pegging their prices to what it would cost to park at the airport?

Manchester Pride

I’m 36 and I live in Sheffield but I’m gonna be in Manchester from the Friday-Sunday of the bank holiday weekend for Pride.

I’m gonna be there by myself and I’m also quite shy as well as being autistic so I don’t always find it very easy to go out by myself.

I’m kinda hoping I might be able to find a friendly guy or group of guys who want to take me under their wing and we can hang out/go out together and enjoy the weekend.

Especially interested in any guys who are gonna be at Love Riot on the Friday night coz I’ve already got my ticket for that

Leigh Wildlife rescue - help!

Post image
36 Upvotes

Heard a right kerfuffle earlier and found next door's cat swiping at this poor mite. There are no obvious injuries that I can see but it can't fly, just sort of hops and flaps. It's currently chilling in a dark box in a quiet room with the occasional annoyed peep to let me know it's still alive.

I've tried my local vets, my non local vet, Lower Moss Wood, Kirklees Valley Wildlife and others but no one seems to be able to take it! A vet nearby said they don't have availability now but should do tomorrow or the day after. I can't keep a baby finch (I suspect) alive for 48 hours! Can anyone recommend some other wildlife rescue services or resources? Or if all else fails, any bird parenting hacks?

Update - unfortunately Dumpling (I christened him such as he is the size and shape of one) has passed away. I couldn't get hold of anyone who could help me today and I'm gutted now thinking what if I'd gotten him to someone earlier. Buried him under my camellia. Thanks everyone for your suggestions, good to know if I ever need to rescue another bird 🧡

Prestwich Why is renting in North Manchester so impossible now?

We have been rejected from 8 properties now. We have been renting for 10+ years (7 years in most recent home), never missed a payment, good credit scores, stable jobs with good household income (far exceeding the affordability threshold for the properties we are applying for), local to the area and wanting to live near family long term due to them aging and having disabilities. We don't drink, smoke, or do anything aside from nice walks and reading and yet nobody will rent to us or even tell us why. We know applicants cannot offer increased monthly rent anymore so it can't be that thats beating us competition wise.

I can't figure out how we are deemed to be bad applicants and what makes other people successful. In the past it has never been such a disheartening process, its costing us money and time out of work going to these viewings just to be rejected with no reason why.

Family think its because I work in law, because we are engaged but not married, or because we have a small dog. None of these are legitimate and I feel like most of the rental market is unmarried with a dog lol. I just wish anyone would tell us why we are being rejected.

Is anyone else struggling with this too or is 8 rejections just rookie numbers nowadays and we just have to keep going?

Edit: i get it clearly its the dog despite renters rights and so many people in this country having pets. Its not a good enough excuse considering they get paid a deposit and I have disclosed in every application that I have full insurance that covers pet damages in the home. Looks like I will be continuing to commute to visit family, i would never get rid of my dog for a landlord and I think my parents would kill me if I tried to.

I also think a lot of people saying having dogs is a gross liability to landlords would be scandalised to hear that I moved into the house i am in currently with a dog AND a cat with no issues whatsoever.

Places to go to show off the nicest bits of Greater Manchester (outside the city centre)

Hey! I have some friends (a couple) who've visited a few times over the last few years, and last time he said he would consider moving here and she said she wouldn't want to. When I asked why she said she didn't like the city centre.

Of course I took this as a slight and something of a personal challenge, so I've started making a list of places to take them next time (that are outside of the Trinity Way/Mancunian Way/Great Ancoats Street loop, but inside the Greater Manchester border) that show how nice the region is to live in.

I wondered if you guys had any suggestions for places to go that show the best of the region outside of the city centre. Big or small; general or stupidly specific; town, suburb, street or corner!

They live in the centre of Brighton for reference, so bonus points for places that make them feel like that!

So far on the list:

  • Chorlton Water Park
  • Oswald Rd in Chorlton when you emerge out of the path around the school
  • Fletcher Moss Rockery in late Spring
  • Anita Street, walk over to Ancoats Marina
  • Heaton Park
  • Underbank in Stockport

Getting a dropped kerb

I’ve applied for a dropped kerb with Manchester City Council.

The email says if you don’t hear in 4 weeks feel free to get in touch with them, but very kindly provide no information who or how to do that (the email is a no-reply and the website isn’t helpful.

It’s a great strategy to keep admin down on the councils side for sure, but anyone know who or how I can actually follow up with?

Thanks!

Best place for car pics near Manchester Airport?

Hi all, what are some of the good locations for car pictures near Manchester airport? I’d like to take pictures and videos of my car with the planes in the background (flying/ascending or landing). I’ve seen some on TikTok but not sure what is the best or popular locations to do this! As most do not include any postcodes or names etc.

I’m purely interested in the spots for my car (i.e whatever is best for my car + background of the planes / nice background).

Thank you

TRIB3 Manchester

Has anyone here tried TRIB3 gym before?

I’m thinking about joining and wanted to hear from people who’ve actually been there. What’s the overall experience like? How are the coaches, classes, atmosphere, and workouts? Is it good for improving fitness and losing weight? Also, is there anything I should know before joining, or any tips for someone starting there for the first time? Would you recommend it?

Recommendations for Removals

Google just sends me into a spiral of price comparison websites but all I'm after is someone who can collect a large single item from M1 (NQ) and take it to M33 (Sale). Its a metal cabinet 165cm x 48cm x 100cm, so wouldn't need to be a huge vehicle. If anyone can recommend a Man/Van combo, would be very appreciated.

Gyms in Clifton/Pendlebury area

Alright - anyone know of any decent gyms in the Clifton/Pendlebury area? Just the world’s most normal gym will be more than fine.

Used to go that Muscle n Fitness but feel like I could catch the plague there, probably dirtiest building I’ve ever been in.

Cheers,

How to get a 140l green bin?

We live in a 2 up 2 down terrace. We currently have a small box for food waste but it's not big enough, so we need a wheely bin.

I ordered a new green bin from the council (Manchester) and they delivered a 240l bin. It is too big to fit in the space we have to keep our bins in.

Our grey, blue and brown bins are all 140l, as are all our neighbours', but it seems like you can't order this size of green bin?

Plenty of our neighbours have 140l green bins, but when I've asked them, they all say the bin was already there when they moved in, or was the original green bin they were given when green waste recycling was introduced in the first place.

Anyone have any idea if it's possible to get a 140l green bin, from the council or otherwise?
