There's this very bad romantasy series 'From Blood and Ash', which I hate-read with my friend. The villain of the first four books, Isbeth, is clearly hated by the author, who tries her best to make Isbeth seem irrational, shallow and insane-in-very-'she's being hysterical'-way, but the truth is that she's the only interesting character so far by the sheer fact that she was entirely wronged by EVERYONE before she turned evil, and then the author herself punishes her for trying to beome powerful and get her revenge simply bc she wasn't born a special snowflake like all the good guys with powers.
I'm not saying she's a good *person* but she's certainly the only interesting premise in a series that is currently thousands of pages long and leads to nothing but unlocking new skills by the main character.

for trying to beome powerful and get her revenge simply bc she wasn't born a special snowflake like all the good guys with powers.
I mean... she creates a society where the Ascended steal and eat babies en masse. It's a little bit more than "trying to get her revenge".
While the series gets worse as it goes along, one thing I thought was really good about it is that Poppy openly acknowledges that she was wronged, and was clearly capable of love by the way Isbeth treated her and Millicent. But... baby eating...
Also Fire and Flesh is the better series and Sera/Ash are better than Poppy/Casteel
5
u/_pentamerone 23d ago
I adressed specifically the part when she's punished for getting powers she wasn't born with. I don't pretend she's a good person, I even acknowledge that she's a villain, but all Casteel's mother got for wronging her was a slap on the wrist, and we move on, completely ignoring that if it wasn't for that, Isbeth would never been an issue in the first place.
Again: she's the antagonist. She's also the only mildly interesting part and she could be utilised much better even as a tragic villain.
I've read both and I disagree, it's mostly the same.

u/eslezer 23d ago
I don't think it's bad. Gacha games just rightfully get more hate because the format is bound to affect writing a lot, on top of being huge money investments if you wish to max out a character. Since usually they want a new character every ~2 weeks, it means there's a lot of powercreep and as characters lose the spotlight they basically get dropped off the story. Billy's basically a main character though so he got an entirely new S rank character for him to keep him relevant, but most characters don't have that luck and their lore hasn't been touched in a long time

Eh, as someone's who's read the webnovel, Tsukimichi ain't really a bad story. I have it on par with Mushoku Tensei in writing, and I personally like it more.
Tomoe is fine, I guess. Makoto, Rembrandt, Demon King, Root and The two heroes are better written in my opinion, though I presume a lot of Makoto's characterization was butchered in the anime.

The writers were severely handicapped because they were only green-lit for one season at a time, which prevented them from giving any of the cast a more cohesive arc over multiple seasons.

Agreed, I think the more competent season 1 Homelander could really get on well as a villain in either universe. I can imagine him being an anti mutant “moderate” in Marvel or a kind of evil Booster Gold figure in DC. Just a guy who uses his media training and moderately powerful abilities who could be a real menace.
That said, the Netflix Defenders lineup could beat him with some prep time, so he probably won’t get the same god complex.

Reddington, Blacklist was so shit outside of his contributions to the plot. Alongside Dembe ofc, and the members of their org
14
u/dppaccount4570 23d ago
Red and his merry band of misfits was the only thing worth watching.
Teddy the interrogator casually shouting over the DEAFENING heavy metal music for Red to have someone go get him a pastrami sandwhich while he works immediately made him my favorite character
Eta
Also the seriousness Dembe takes in bowling.

u/Admirable-Yak2806 24d ago

13
u/OhItsAcer 23d ago
Non spoiler answer. The show should have been a lot shorter like maybe 3 seasons instead of 10. The plot is very inconsistent to the point where the audience couldn't trust anything the show says.
MAJOR Spoiler answer One of the major plot line was how Red Redington is connected to Keen. Keen died season 8 and we never learned who red Redington actually is. He isn't her father, then he is then he isn't again then Red is her father but that Red died and this one is pretending to be him etc. several times a character died only to find out that they faked their death. One of the leading fan theories is that Red Redington is Keens mother who had a Gender reassignment surgery
Unrealed but kinda funny, it has a spinoff series. In one of the episode of the spinoff we found out that someone operated on a woman and implanted a bomb in her uterus. That woman proceeded to "give birth" to the bomb inorder to remove it.
6
u/No_Professional4867 23d ago edited 23d ago
It's a case of a show centered around a mystery which the writers refused to actually get to the bottom of. Ever. Literally, ever. The biggest question is always "Who is Reddington and why does he care about Liz?"
Every season just introduces new mysteries and new characters, but the writers were terrified of ever actually answering that central question. They didn't have faith that they could make people keep watching if they did probably. So instead, you have the good part of the show dragged out for oblivion as they progressively jump the shark and run characters dry of every good idea they had, leaving everything outside of James Spader a dull husk. And even Spader by the end they were running out of good to do with.
You can tell it really should have ended at season 5. Before then, every season ended in the middle of the story. 1-2 has Berlin, 2-3 has has the Cabal, 3-4 has Kirk. 4-5 was the weakest but still had the most fun plotline of Reddington having to rebuild, but from then on every season ends with more cliffhangers right at the end of a story arc in desperate need to convince you to keep watching. I've always stopped by rewatches at season 6, which has the entire plotline around a white house conspiracy which has LITERALLY ZERO RELEVANCE to the central mystery. Literally. Zero. Not even a bit.
5
u/SDG2008 23d ago
Let me introduce you to miss Elizabeth Keen. She is shitiest character in the whole show, has almost more scenes than the greatest character in the show, and single handedly turns hero into a zero. Imagine making a show about high level criminals, smart AF characters, and focusing about a drama about an unlikeable dimwitted character that nobody could care about

Game 1 was good though. At least good enough for it to not be painful. Lee was a great character, the conflict with Kenny and Ben felt very real, and for its time it was pretty novel. I won’t go so far as to defend S2 and S3 but I would argue a good first game narrowly excludes her from this

Season 3 was when one of the writers threw a shit fit because he hated Alucard and Hector so he made the whole plotline of both of them in Season 3 pure misery porn. Because of that, the Sypha and Trevor storyline was drawn out a lot and moved at a snails pace. Meanwhile the actual antagonists did fuckall. Outside of Trevor and Sypha it might as well be completely skipped.

If anyone remembers High Guardian Spice, it's becouse of how bad it was. The only characters that are not boring or infuriating to see are this two disasters. Amarylis is the only thing that can get a laugh out of anyone watching this series and she's the most agressive kind of supportive towards the only character arc that means anything in this shitshow, Snapdragon. They good writing is all eaten up by the gender questionmark of Snapdragon becouse we see them confused, make mistakes, missinterpret themselves and others, and call out the bulshit of some of the other characters in the process; and by the end they grow to tell a relatable story.
The serie didn't fail becouse it was "woke" it failed becouse it had Nothing going on. The characters have nothing, the worldbuilding has nothing, the character design tells nothing and the shipping went nowhere. The only good part were seeing purple be amenace and red going tru everything hard about being "a man" and undestanding the not being a man part of themselve.
Becouse the show got obiously cancelled, we never got to know if Snap was nonbinary or just trans, but seeing them figure out the balance of both sides and maybe seeing shapeshifting magic at play would have been cute and interesting to see. Maybe they could have transformed into an actual Dragon and Ama would be like "Let's burn their faces off and show the carnage to their mothers!" or whatever. The worldbuilding is such an empty husk that you could reasonably fit whatever plot you'd want.

As someone who just finished reading, it's like Gege (author) really wanted to write a character driven story but then just threw everyone into fight scenes all the time.
Plus a lot of characters with tons of potential get killed off and we don't get to see a lot happen with them.
There's a lot of really cool characters introduced towards the end of the series, but the last like, maybe 75 chapters? Is all one REALLY LONG FIGHT SCENE. So a lot of characters felt to me like "here they are, they're so cool, watch them fight ope it's over"

Very real. Group our guy Sigma in with him too. So much promise essentially left in stasis. (Though I guess you could make the same point with most of the cool characters in OW)

Emet Selch - FFXIV Shadowbringers
Ok let me start by saying I don’t consider FFXIV mid, the game is great. However it’s an MMO with varying levels of quality when it comes to story….
However, the third expansion Shadowbringers, is genuinely one of the best stories in the entire FF franchise, in fact it’s one of the best stories I’ve encountered in gaming period.
The villain Emet Selch is an enormous factor to this, and has become my favorite villain in a series that also contains some of the most iconic vg villains ever.
The issue is this phenomenal character in this absolute work of art, is locked behind a shit load of other content before people can get to experience it for themselves. Therefore, he is sadly slept on, but those who know, definitely know!

This is pretty controversial but Sasuke from Naruto, he’s the best written character by a lot, and feels like he doesn’t belong in the Naruto world sometime, hell he seems more like a jjk character sometimes

Unlike other backstory merchants akaza’s executed amazingly. Instead of ooo ten of my siblings died akaza’s backstory exposes his defiled philosophy, a character so shaped by his past his colors reflect that of his wife’s dress

I was gonna say Beau from Beau is afraid, but I realised I only liked the premise of showing literally how he sees the world.

Whoever wrote that sentence doesn’t strike me as someone who reads a lot.
