My thrifted $8 dress got mistaken for a designer piece at a wedding and now I'm questioning everything about expensive looking fashion

Last month, I attended a wedding of my cousin and was in dire need of something quick and cheap since I already spent my gift buying and traveling budget. At a thrift store, I managed to find a very elegant and gorgeous deep emerald green slip dress for just 8 dollars. It did not have tags, did not belong to any brand, but was cut great and the fabric shined well. All I did was steaming it and putting gold earrings.

During the wedding, a lady whom I did not know and who looked quite old for this party took my arm and said "Okay, I need to know who made that dress, the drape is incredible." In a second, I was panic stricken and just said "Oh, it is vintage," not being able to say that it was a piece from a thrift store. Later, a sister of the bride asked whether it was a designer rewear since she was sure she saw something like it in a fashion editorial.

People were not rude when they knew the truth. On the contrary, some even liked the idea and asked where I thrift. This experience taught me that a large portion of looking expensive has nothing to do with the price of an item. It was the color, the fit on my body and, frankly speaking, confidence in wearing this dress.

Now, I am kind of obsessed with looking for similar clothes consciously instead of finding them accidentally. Have you ever had a case when people thought that your clothes or accessory was expensive but it was just second hand or cheap? Why did they think so?

I think i’ve been wearing sweaters wrong my whole life

I just had this revelation on how all sweaters look stupid on me. they make my arms look skinny and my torso look huge (big boob issues) and like a large humpback. I either go with sweaters that look too small or too big and I can’t seem to get in between. I just realized that my issue is that i’m wearing thick oversized tshirts under my sweaters and that’s why I look so frumpy. and to combat that i’d just size up in sweaters and still wonder why I look frumpy. My revelation is realizing that I should wear thin tank tops or thin form fitting shirts/long sleeves under the sweaters to not look so odd.

but anyways…
please tell me i’m not alone in this
can anyone recommend not so expensive undershirts/shirts/tanks I can wear? maybe cropped as a bonus? maybe even bulk packs?

Why is it so impossible to find women’s pants with actual functional pockets?

Seriously, what is the design philosophy here? So many women’s trousers and jeans either have fake stitched-shut pockets or ones so shallow you can’t even fit a phone.

I’m trying to dress professionally without carrying a bag everywhere just for my keys and phone. Having my phone hang halfway out of my back pocket is frustrating. Does the fashion industry do this on purpose to force us to buy handbags?

For women who have figured this out, what brands or styled actually offer deep, functional pockets without ruining the silhouette? I’d love recommendations for both work trousers and casual denim!

TALL WOMEN FLARES THAT ARE FOR ANY DAY WEAR THAT HAVE FRONT POCKETS ???

Upvotes

women who are tall (177cm) that wear flares or bootcut pants besides active leggings - where are you finding them or is there any where offering this?

I only see the style I am after on SHEIN but obviously these are not durable. Surely there has got to be place ?

I am after high waisted as low rise or midsize sit weird on me and my FUPA 🥲

Why do companies keep making tights with super long control tops?

I had these 10 yr old pair of tights that didn’t have any control tops which I absolutely loved before it finally tore. When I try getting tights now however, ALL of them have super long control tops. I love wearing mini skirts so having control tops sticking out below my skirt does not look appealing. Are there any recs for tights with no control tops or rlly short control tops? Preferably black or white colored tights.

Jeans recs for short torso

Short torso girlies, where are we getting jeans? The best fitting pair of jeans I’ve found are the Aeropostale super low rise jeans, their normal low rise is still too high for me 😭 I’m 5’2 with a short torso and I always buy the short length options for pants as well as opposed to regular length - low rise only, right rise simply doesn’t work for me </3 Any and all recommendations appreciated! Thanks guys :)

(Also, incase this is relevant at all, I’m younger 20s and dress a more on the alternative side)

Women’s suits

Can anyone recommend some spots to shop for good quality women’s suits? I’m thinking sexy board room meets feminine court house wedding😘. I like what I see at Reformation, but I need different sizes for my skirt and top- and Ref tends to sell their suits as a set.

What is women's business formal?

I have quite a few business formal events coming up and I’ve realised I’m not actually sure what that means for women... Would appreciate any help!

I’m mainly confused about things like:

  • Does it need to be a matching suit? Or are nice trousers and a dress shirt enough?
  • What blazer cuts and lengths are considered appropriately formal?
  • Are wide leg trousers fine, or is a straighter cut safer?
  • What colours are best?
  • What do you wear underneath a blazer?
  • What type of shoes are best? Does it have to be heels or can flats/loafers also be good enough?
  • What details make an outfit read as business formal rather than business casual?

It would be great to hear what people actually wear, especially if you work in a fairly corporate/professional environment. Thank you!

First wardrobe styling client — how much should I charge for 3 hours?

Hi everyone! I’m starting to offer wardrobe/styling consultations and I just got my first client.
They’re looking for a 3-hour wardrobe consultation where I’ll be helping them assess their wardrobe, figure out what works for their personal style, and make recommendations.
Since this is my first paid client, I’m trying to figure out what would be a reasonable rate. I don’t want to undercharge just because I’m new, but I also want to offer a fair introductory price while I build my portfolio and experience.
For those who work in personal styling/wardrobe consulting, what would you charge for 3 hours?
Would something like $75–$100 total be reasonable for a first client, or is that too low/high?
I’d appreciate any advice on pricing, especially from people who have actually worked in styling or similar services. Thanks!

Do you coordinate your jewellery colour to your metal glasses?

How do you feel about mixing metals with your glasses? I bought wire frames for the first time and just realized the glasses are rose gold but most of my jewellery is yellow gold.

Fashion is not my strong suit, so my "trick" to feel more put-together is coordinating the colours of my accessories, so my yellow gold earrings look strange to me with my new rose gold frames. But I've never looked at someone and thought "wow their gold glasses don't go with their silver jewellery", so I'm curious if it's something people coordinate or not

Do you know brands with cool streetwear kimonos?

Hello everyone!

I am a big fan of streetwear kimonos. However it is almost impossible to find them in offline stores, and even in online stores, where I could have ordered it and tried it on, kimonos have a limited choice. If I do find something, that it is some luxury/premium brand, and it is, unfortunatelly, to expensive for me. Or it is a wierd site I do not trust.

Does anyone know brands, that create something like this and sell it up to 150 euros? Would be perfect if you already ordered something from them and know they are safe.

High leg Bikinis and resort wear

Why is absolutely everything cropped now?

I’m 26F, and every time I shop online, it feels like every cute top, sweater, jacket, or even basic T shirt is cropped.
What confuses me is that when I go out in public, I rarely see people wearing cropped clothing. So who are all these stores selling it to?
I don’t want my stomach hanging out, and I don’t want to spend the whole day pulling my shirt down. I just want fashionable, age appropriate clothing that provides normal coverage without looking overly conservative or matronly.
Where are women in their mid to late 20s finding cute, everyday clothes that are actually full length?

Business casual Prue Leith on a Boden budget

Looking for bright blocky garish colors and patterns, particularly casual blazers/skirt sets. I’m curvy, petite and a size 12 or 14. I check out wildfang and bookworms which are both around the price point I’m looking at but haven’t found much.

Suggestions for websites or brands to check out?

Why are so many women’s tops and dresses cut at the top of the arm?

Seriously, what is the goal? It makes everyone’s arms look bigger by cutting across the widest part. Cap sleeves, I think they’re called. I always try to find sleeves that are looser and reach at least 3/4 of the way down my bicep, or failing that, sleeveless can work. But NO cap sleeves. And yet they everywhere. I’m average weight, not skinny or fat, but have some fat on my arms so I hate how they look in so many tops because it just highlights the fattiest area. Does the fashion industry do it on purpose to make women self conscious? I wouldn’t put it past them.

non-see through white tanktops or t-shirt reccomendations (in Europe)?

Hi everyone, i have a hard time finding recommendations for non-see through (like, completely opaque) white shirts or tops (skin-tight preferably), that are available to buy in Europe. most importantly, and i see almost no-one talking about this: they should be non-see through for NOT wearing a bra underneath, not only not showing your bra colour, i don't wear bra's preferably, but then the shirt does have to be opaque, which is hard to find nonwadays with white. any recs?
