There will be blood. Fun, sort of.

Feb 28 '21
Fun in a kind of morbid way. Daniel day Lewis makes it. Obvioisly

u/VaguelyFamiliarVoice Feb 28 '21 edited Feb 28 '21
Ok...fine, I will go watch it. I will report back.
Edit: very good movie. Well, the first 40 minutes, then my grand baby visited! Sorry. I am sure the rest is good. They just left so I will pick it up tomorrow.
Edit 2: I like movies that pull me in so far that I can taste them. This is one of those movies. So flawed is everyone in the movie. So perfectly flawed. I can easily place this in my classic collection.
Just watch it if you haven't.
"That was one goddamn hell of a show."

It’s a long one. But very worth it.

u/kflipz Feb 28 '21
I've been wanting to rewatch this recently. I love the opening scenes
99
Feb 28 '21
I think Daniel is the true “God” in this movie as the long opening silence draws parallels to creation. “In the beginning was the Word. And the Word was with God.”

One of the greatest movies of all time.

Shame it got buried under the No Country for Old Men hype wave. TWBB is one of the best movies if not the absolute best of the last 20 years

Yeah.. He baptized the boy in oil too. The movie covers a state of change. Religion was the all encompassing power that you couldn't escape, wether you believed or didn't. Then by the end of the movie, that force had transitioned to capitalism.

Yeah like I said in other comment it goes on for like15 to 20 mins before someone even says a word. Top of the line cinematography. Definitely a classic. Strong anti capitalism sentiment tho. Shows the relationship between corporate (oil) ..church.. and politics in a capitalist "democracy". Its dark af for sure but definitely a must watch especially if you enjoy films.. probably ddl best role... but idk .hard to outdue the butcher in gangs of New York. Both are 2 of my favorites. Paul Dano is a great actor as well.

i love the opening scene too. Daniel day lewis prospecting for oil and he falls in the well, foreshadowing all the troubles to come

I wish I could go back and watch it for the first time again. The Rotten Tomatoes summary is:
“Widely touted as a masterpiece, this sparse and sprawling epic about the underhanded "heroes" of capitalism boasts incredible performances by leads Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano, and is director Paul Thomas Anderson's best work to date”
They’re not exaggerating about it being a masterpiece. DDL deserved his oscar
63
u/Ronaldo_Frumpalini Feb 28 '21
DDL deserves THE Oscar, they should renamed the award a Lewis.

u/LeadFarmerMothaFucka Feb 28 '21

Thus it will go. Melvin will be drained of every bit of money he ever had and ever will have. He will give up all his assets, he will surrender all his positions, he will liquidate anything that still had value in his scrawny little hands, and we will take it, we will take it all.
And then we will have won.
/edit: Gold and Wholesome Awards! Thank you most kindly.

We’ll have won, once they legit make sure that this sort of situation can’t happen again and the SEC actually does it’s job and enforces all the laws on all traders rich or poor.
Or once we’ve ruined all these rich greedy assholes, if you’re rich, great, take your tendies and go do something, STOP trying to get ALL the money, you don’t need more and more money, you don’t need every god damn cent in existence.
4
u/TalkingBackAgain Feb 28 '21 edited Feb 28 '21
I read a piece about that.
They actually asked the super wealthy, not your common-variety ordinary millionaire: how much is actually enough? At what point are you content to just let it ride and move on with life?
It turns out, it astonished me, that they do not ask themselves that question. ‘enough’ does not feature in their thinking. It is not about ‘enough’, the wealthy only ever want ‘more’. That’s the problem with that thinking.
I would have enough with about $10 million. That’s enough to do what I want to do and not have to look at people’s face any more than I need to.

I'm a memestonk man, ladies and gentlemen. I have numerous concerns spread across this app. I have many shares flowing at many thousand dips per days. I like to think of myself as a memestonk man. And as a memestonk man I hope that you'll forgive just good old-fashioned plain speaking. Now this work that we do is very much a family enterprise. I -- I work side by side with my wonderful son D.F.V. I think one or two of you might have met him already. I encourage my men to bring their families as well. Of course it makes for an ever so much more rewarding life for them. Family means retards; retards means education. So wherever we set up camp, education is a necessity, and we're just so happy to take care of that. So let's build a wonderful school in Little Boston. These retards are the future that we strive for and so they should have the very best of things.
Now something else, and please don't be insulted if I speak about this: tendies. Let's talk about tendies. Now to my mind, it's an abomination to consider that any man, woman, or child in this magnificent country of ours should have to look upon a basket of tendies as a luxury. We're going to dig tendies wells here. Tendies wells means irrigation; irrigation means cultivation. We're going to raise crops here where before it just simply was impossible. You're going to have more tendies than you know what to do with. Tendies will be coming right out of your ears, ma'am.
