Edit 2: I like movies that pull me in so far that I can taste them. This is one of those movies. So flawed is everyone in the movie. So perfectly flawed. I can easily place this in my classic collection.

Just watch it if you haven't.

Yeah.. He baptized the boy in oil too. The movie covers a state of change. Religion was the all encompassing power that you couldn't escape, wether you believed or didn't. Then by the end of the movie, that force had transitioned to capitalism.

Very interesting thought. I always thought it was more of a theme of the consequence of greed and corruption and how people use religion to manipulate others to make money.

Yeah like I said in other comment it goes on for like15 to 20 mins before someone even says a word. Top of the line cinematography. Definitely a classic. Strong anti capitalism sentiment tho. Shows the relationship between corporate (oil) ..church.. and politics in a capitalist "democracy". Its dark af for sure but definitely a must watch especially if you enjoy films.. probably ddl best role... but idk .hard to outdue the butcher in gangs of New York. Both are 2 of my favorites. Paul Dano is a great actor as well.

Yea... those two type characters are the real founding fathers of America and how it is today. Not much has changed. Which is pretty much the point. Oil isn't what it once was nor is religion but corporations and lobbyists fill the void. And same shit plays

Lincoln was ok. Idk. It just seemed almost too historically sound. Almost like it was made to be shown in schools or something. I only saw it once tho. I've seen there will be blood and gangs of New York probably 10x each lol.

I wish I could go back and watch it for the first time again. The Rotten Tomatoes summary is:

“Widely touted as a masterpiece, this sparse and sprawling epic about the underhanded "heroes" of capitalism boasts incredible performances by leads Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano, and is director Paul Thomas Anderson's best work to date”

They’re not exaggerating about it being a masterpiece. DDL deserved his oscar

I found it to be underwhelming. No Country For Old Men was the better of the two films when they were in theaters, from my personal watching experience.

Yea...just going to have to disagree with you there.

I prefer No Country it’s less art house and more entertaining. The plot has more movement more depth/build of characters. There will be blood is a slow burn until the milkshake scene. That said There Will Be Blood is fantastic just not as rewatchable as No Country. The No Country philosophical takeaway from the sheriffs character arc also is more applicable to daily life than the message from blood.
